The Everything NHL Thread

SHere is my cool strategy. A mod deletes every single post that popemobile makes while nobody replies to anything he says. He will eventually go away. Replying to his posts and giving him infractions only makes him feel like he is successfully trolling everybody even though he is a massive idiot.

Hi5 on the firings anyway justin yea!

I think you got the better coach though...

To take a more serious perspective, I've always kind of thought being happy over people getting fired in sports like people do with GMs and coaches is kind of innately ridiculous, but it's hard not to view this as a positive for the Capitals given how blunt the team has been about giving up on him(I know the Canes' situation less well because AHL games are too boring to watch). There have been so many times over the past two or three years where I thought Bruce would get fired for sure and I thought not firing him was almost inexplicable twice last year (the losing streak during 24/7 and how badly he was outcoached by Boucher against Tampa. Speaking of 24/7, did anyone think he was the type of guy who should be a professional sports coach after viewing that program...?). I was almost sure the way Washington lost to Tampa meant he was out, which ended up being the case... it was just the players who made the decision instead of the GM.

I think it's hard not to find the choice of another first time NHL head coach a little disconcerting given the way the team gave up on the last coach. The locker room here seems a little toxic, will be a big challenge for Hunter. Still, glad to see a change was made, the roster is so good right now and now the weakest position on the team was replaced.

Now if only they could do something with Mike Green...

Poor Bruce.. but hey, it had to be done and probably should have been done a while ago. It seemed pretty unlikely that he could just flip the switch, change his whole coaching style and expect to fit the round (or rotund, in the case of BB) peg into a square hole. That's not to say I don't believe Washington could play better defensive hockey, I think the squad overall is capable, but that sort of message needed to come from a different guy. It wasn't something Boudreau could deliver. I don't know much about Dale Hunter as a hockey coach or what kind of style he'll bring but from what I was reading today, it sounds like we might see a boost in offense if only because the star players like Ovechkin might be getting some more ice time to make things happen. Here's hoping.. the league is more exciting when Crosby has a legitimate foil.

Whenever the devils have changed coaches, they've played way better for the rest of that season.

the washington capitals are nothing like the devils.

goodbye season.

EDIT: Thank you Caps! Looks like they forced the Canes' hand. Paul Maurice has just been fired as well! Awesome. Kirk Muller is the new HC of the Canes. I think he has potential to be a good coach. I'd rather have him than some retread.

From what I've heard, Muller was one of the biggest reasons Montreal reached the semifinals of that playoffs. He'll definitely get the most out of the Carolina in my opinion.

Also, Synre, what do you have against Green? His defensive game isn't so sound (still better than most!), he plays a great offensive and transition game and he's been a big part of Washington's defense from what I heard from other fans. I'm not being snarky; I'm actually really curious.

I think his comment is more tongue in cheek (though Green's defensive prowess does leave much to be desired in spite of his inflated positive +/-)

It's a pretty funny gimmick to constantly knock on Green defensively (a lot of it was deserved early career

My thoughts on the firings:

1. Both were overdue, one more than the other.
2. Watch the Caps light it up for the rest of the season and finish first in the East.
3. Thank GOD the Sabres got to beat up on the Caps before they made the changes. They won't lay down like that next time. Plus, we get the honor of putting the last nail in the coffin.

Anaheim's last 10: 1-8-1. Yikes.

Wonder what kind of package it'll take to pry him away from Anaheim. There'll definitely be interest around the league.

Ruined my fantasy night, but at least the new line changes seem to be working really well. Kopitar seems to have sort of lost his touch but Richards is picking up his slack. That second line with Gagne - Richards - Stoll is pretty scary.

if anything, this is the year to tank for sure. Draft will be loaded with talent, so shopping Ryan for picks makes some sense considering how awful the ducks have been recently

Interesting looking at that list too since Carlyle is on the hot seat right now and Wilson and McLellan(though that one would be a mistake) could be there by year's end, too, based on the usual scuttlebutt.

It's interesting to me how many coaching positions have been filled by first timers lately. I'm not sure if the success of relatively young coaches like Babcock, Bylsma, and Boucher(maybe starting with the letter B is the key) is changing the trend or what but not long ago it seemed like there was a pool of about 35 coaches that got rotated through teams but it seems head coach is a young man's position now. Some other new hires like Mike Yeo looking really good, too.
