The Everything NHL Thread

I'm not sure if I want to view it as classy or as a way to try to reduce or remove the inevitable suspension but it's good he did it I guess and it's not like he went Boulerice on him, I guess. I know the CBC dude was going as far to blame Bergeron for not having his head up which I think is a terrible argument in this and every other time people try to use it but while a cheap hit it's not as bad as a lot of the other biggies. Pretty obvious board though, so while I'm sure he didn't mean to hospitalize him it was a pretty poorly thought out hit...

On a slightly more amusing note WER picked up Jones today, lol.

So as an update(moderator double posting!) on the Jones/Bergeron thing, it looks like Bergeron won't be out more than a week or two, which is less time than Jones will be missing since he only got two games(!?). Not sure I agree with that one...

On a lighter note I got six assists last night, getting me up to 57 in three weeks and a day. If only I could produce in any other category...

Additionally that random I was whining would inevitably light me up this weak can be Martin Lapointe, Vin, i love him so he's allowed to kick my shit in.

In real hockey news my Wings are in the opposite position my fantasy team is, chilling at #1 in the NHL. I mostly like it better when we're flying under the radar but it's good to see us doing relatively well even thought the goaltending is terrible(good work nearly getting us into overtime trying to score a goal, Osgood)... at least Hudler and Fillipula seem to be trying to produce on offense, which should help a lot combined with Samuelson overachieving again this year and Franzen poised to have a good year whenever he gets hurt. There are enough other forwards at this point we can count on in the current top line and the grind line v3.0 that we can throw in a couple grit players in the last two slots(likely some combination of Kopecky, Ellis, and Drake) and be pretty solid I think. The blue line isn't bad either as long as we don't get rocked by injuries the way we did last year (Lidstrom is still the best defensemen in the league, Rafalski fits awesome into our system, Chelios might not be what he was in the 90s but he's still excellent defensively, Lebda is a very solid young guy and Kronwall and Lilja are decent I guess... we have a few other good young(er) guys to fill the mostly unnecessary seventh slot in Quincey(who ended up being decent in the playoffs last year filling in) and that guy who's name is eluding me who played last night.

Still worried about the goaltending, Osgood is playing well but isn't as young as he used to be and as ESPN said, Hasek's body is being held together by his will alone at this point and he's just not as quick as he was in the mid 90s. He's one of the all-time greats but I think his time has passed him by at this point, although if we don't get injuries and he can even get back to the level he was at for most of the playoffs last year it'll be enough for us to have a good run, I think.

Still predicting Carolina over Detroit in 6 in the finals (with my next two picks in either conference being Philly and San Jose(I fully expect Ottawa to win it but I feel that it's more likely they'll do it next year than this year). Lots of other teams with good chances such as the Rangers assuming they get their shit together, Pittsburgh, and really most of the Eastern conference in general... the league more balanced than usual this year which should make things fun, especially the last 15ish games of the season and the playoffs.

As an aside, rooting for the Kings and the Capitals to make the playoffs even though it's not looking terrible good for either of them right now. The Caps have had injury trouble so they are likely going to get better rather than worst (Clark, Semin, Poti is a terrible group of scratches) but man the Kings need some more consistent goaltending... LA is only 1 point off the lead in their division and in a 3 way tie for 7th currently, with the Caps tied for 9th in there conference and one point off a two way tie for 7th. Here's hoping they both squeak in, haha.

Fuck me if Carolina wins another Stanley Cup.

After TB, Carolina & Anaheim, the cup needs to come back in an actual hockey market.

Be that the wings, the wild, a canadian team, the penguins or whatever.

I went with the Penguins before the season started to win, they've had an okayish start at best but I'll stick with that prediction.

Also rooting hard for the Blackhawks to be back in the playoffs.

I agree about the Hawks. I miss them being hockey powerhouses like back in the 90s.

Also, I've forgotten how slow the beginning of the season is. Sabres last game was Saturday, not another one until Thursday.

Did my last public draft today, I managed to miss the live draft for the other two(although I am still first overall in the roto one currently, lol), decided to mix up how I normally play it a little and get Brodeur(Luongo was gone shut up) and Lundqvist(I just don't have faith in the Wild and Backstrom is already somewhat injured) with my first two picks so we'll see how 'be a big jerk with goalies' works since this is head-to-head. I'd been considering Zetterberg as my first but he went at like 6 or something(I had 8 of 12) so I just decided to try the goalie thing. The rest of the field was drafting smarter than I would have preferred which made the later rounds kinda tricky but I ended up with:

C Chris Drury (I get him a lot, he won't get his buffalo numbers but is solid at pick ~80 imo)
C Paul Stastny
C Rod Brind'Amour
LW/RW Milan Michalek
LW Alexander Semin(he's BOUND to not be hurt eventually right ? ? ?)
LW Sean Avery
RW Justin Williams
RW Patrick Kane
RW Chris Neil
D Zdeno Chara
D Andrei Markov
D Craig Rivet
D Cory Murphy
D Douglas Murray
G Martin Brodeur
G Henrik Lundqvist

I kinda expect to have a big collapse by my non-goalies around the all-star break but I am confident I'll be able to adapt, especially since this team is kinda offensively inept to begin with, lol. I think this is probably my best draft sadly, perhaps even ignoring the goalies. A couple other teams had strong drafts so I suppose I'll lose to them and the bad teams will have ridiculous weeks against me and I'll end up getting my nice smogon position at the bottom. Some jackass stole Holmstrom from me like four picks before I would have gotten him so I might try and trade for him though :( I kinda had trouble with my defesemen getting drafted before I could take them but other than that it was solid imo.

the last time i registered a win was prolly against synre lol :(

however my offense is pretty much unstoppable thus far

So I have reason to believe I will NOT be winning any goaltending stats this week as both Kolzig and Brodeur got pulled about 5 minutes into the third while down 5-0.

At least Stillman was putting them past Kolzig(3 goals, 1 Assist, 3 PPP) but that really doesn't make me feel any better about it at this point!

God damn why do the Sabres have to suck so much? I think I should just stop playing Ryan Miller altogether.

Also.. hooray for me not getting swept 0-10 last week! You're going down Jackai!

I'd keep playing Miller. He's playing great, his team is the one sucking goat cocks.

Right but when the team sucks cock I don't get a point in the win column. Though his other stats last night are much more appreciated than last week's and the week before.

Yeah, his GAA and SAV% are on the rise... too bad the rest of the team is leaving him out to dry.

My team felt sorry for you I suppose, nice comeback you made ^

Also hooray for Wolski's nice game last night, hope my goalies pickup their game now and I should head into another victory, too bad xocmin's goalie has a shutout already in the 1st game.

yeah I'm still pissed that you have him but it's my own stupid fault

last night would have been awesome if I had him and Hejduk.

So apparently whatever source I was reading when I wrote the following was wrong:

Since I noticed on yahoo's power rankings yesterday:

yahoo.com said:
Update on concussed forward Patrice Bergeron: He's out anywhere from a month to a year and he needed a wheelchair to get from his home to treatment facility.

Still kind of really annoyed at the lack of time Jones got.

Also, in addition to both my goalies getting lit up and pretty much losing the week on day one Kovalchuk evidently got hurt last night and potentially is out for a while. Awesome.

I concluded a long time ago that the player who throws the hit shouldn't be allowed to play again until the victim does. If you're going to rob someone of any length of time in their hockey career, it should be reciprocated upon you.

That seems like a logical enough solution to me - kind of really backs up the whole take responsibility for your actions thing.

I'm still curious how much the whole mid-game-apology thing did to shortening his sentence, since if that had any effect at all I'd be more than a little irritated I think!

man that was a great week, little close at the end but I kept my lead everywhere and that should make my team a top 4 one in the ranks tomorrow :D

I have to say that watching games while playing fantasy hockey adds a lot to the fun of it. I have watched way more games this year than I did last year.

for sure, it also makes you more knowledgeable which is good. I started in 2005, and before that the only players i knew really were those on the leafs, those on team canada and the all stars int he league. Now i can name like the first 2-3 lines on most teams.

I've gone the other way. Back in 2002-2005, I was the same way, knowing basically every player on every team because I watched so many of the games. The last two seasons have not been this way at all for me, with just so much going on in life.

On the fantasy side, I still need to acquire a good left wing. If anybody has a decent one and wants Turco or one of my offensemen, feel free to make an offer.

posting to enjoy the Pittsburgh Sidney Crosbies being last in the Atlantic

also enjoying the fact Atlanta is already two games out of 8th in the conference in spite of starting out 0-7
