The Everything NHL Thread

I'm looking forward to watching the Sens play in Stockholm, Alfie playing in his home country should give him a boost. Crosby and the Pens will be fun too watch, as well.

What I do wonder, would you home based fans travel alongside your team to watch them play in Europe? I'm not sure if we have any sens/rangers/lightning/penguins fans on these boards though.

I'm actually a huge Sens fan. As a student entering University in the Fall, though, I definitely won't make the trip to Sweden with them.

Alfie has a 7-point game.

Holy SHIT.

Also, Buffalo finally won. Beat Dallas in the first matchup between them in Dallas since... 2003. Thank god the schedule is changing.

While I was somewhat surprised to be reminded that this case is actually still in court, I found this kind of interesting

http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/news?slug=ap-bertuzzi-lawsuit&prov=ap&type=lgns

I kinda think that this will be pretty irrelevant but I am somewhat surprised to see this coming out so long after the incident.

I don't really have anything to go on other than gut but it just seems... like a difficult situation with Crawford's new team's biggest rival being the team Bertuzzi plays for now.

So with a Thursday featuring a starting lineup total of
  • 8 goals
  • 11 assists
  • 10 plus/minus
  • 6 power play points
  • 6 pims
  • 37 shots on goal
I will still lose the week 6-2 go figure...

I had a huge advantage on the skater stats Psycho, you just got unlucky.

If i made 2 different moves (not playing Emery on tuesday) and playing Demitra instead of Hejduk it would have been 8-1 ;)

Skills competition in general was more interesting than I can ever remember it being this year.

I'm somewhat sad that it could have been better - a lot of players(all of the Eastern shootout elimination competitors and Evgeni fucking Nabakov in particular) seemed to be deeply confused about how skills competitions work and were playing to win instead of playing to entertain which is not the point of the event. I really wanted to throttle the aforementioned idiot goalie for poke checking St Louis in the fucking style shootout competition twice in a row. Hello, idiot, this competition is not about poke checking shooters who aren't even fucking looking at you it's about entertaining the fans and trying to do fun moves. I sincerely hope he never sees another all-star game, and if I was St Louis I would probably run him into the fucking net tomorrow.

Outside of that it was pretty fun though, the Young Stars game was still completely devoid of defense but it was extremely entertaining, largely because 2nd half goalie Manny Legace was miced. I never liked him much when he was in Detroit but I miss him now, he was definitely the life of the party and really seemed to do well embracing the whole concept of the all-star weekend entertainment. Future perennial All-Stars Backstrom and Enstrom were both pretty productive in the win although I was disappointed that the Gagner/Kane reunion didn't really result in any offense. I really enjoyed the East starting lineup of Backstrom/Enstrom/Clarkson, they are my three favorite "young stars" by far so it was cool to see them all playing on the same team.

The relay thing at the beginning was kind of dumb but Datsyuk and Markov raped their sections which is always fun and it was cool to see the goalies fire prayers at the empty net regardless of how pointless it was. Not surprisingly Rick DiPietro was definitely the best at it, and like Manny Legace he was miced and did a pretty good job keeping things fun.

Pretty good show in general though, hoping tomorrow is as entertaining.

I dont know, I thought it sucked, like it usually does. That was mainly due to it being in Atlanta maybe. Expect a much different crowd reaction next year in Montreal.

Althought, thank you jesus the rookies mini-game was way more entertaining than last year.
about Legace, synre, my thoughts exactly :

[21:08:28] <Vincent> why the fuck is legace
[21:08:30] <Vincent> pokechecking
[21:08:33] <Vincent> what a fucking moron
[21:08:55] <Jumpman16> is that like an unwritten rule vin
[21:08:58] <Jumpman16> to not do that in this competition
[21:09:07] <Vincent> well they should try to stop the puck
[21:09:11] <Vincent> not stop the shot

especially considering Martin St-Louis is one of the rare players that understood the judging system. Getzalf & Overchkin being the other 2.

Anyway, that particular judged event is interesting but it needs tune up. Players didnt have time to prepare for it, and some of them just went with regular shootout attempts, when scoring wasn't the idea necessairly here.

One other thing I disliked though, is the camera shot angle from behind during the shootouts. You couldnt find a better way to miss the play. At least we could see happened on the replays with the camera behind the net.

I thought the relay was ok, but the crowd was so dead when it started that I thought they were just practicing. I wish DiPietro would have had more time to shoot more though. This new faster skater event sucked. I know the players asked for it to be changed but I didnt like that new format. Plus, Kovalchuk was robbed and for some reason, Brian Campbell was elected to skate again when he got owned in the first wave.

on a final note, Thomas spinning like a top after a goal scored was funny.

legace wasn't in net for st louis, nabakov was

I think next year'll be a lot better. I doubt it'll ever be quite what the slam dunk competition is but considering only half the skaters "got it" I think next year will be better when everyone has another year to prepare and think about shit. It's too bad Crosby is injured because much like Ovechkin I think he is born for that event, having both of them in it next year will be awesome. Given that only 2/3 of the shooters (Kovalchuk was also fine with the on the knees thing imo) really performed they way they were supposed to it can only get better with a year for all of them to improve and to get the roster refined a bit. I doubt anyone will pull a Nabakov again either although at least the other goalies figured out how it was supposed to work on their own.

Really hoping for Crosby/Ovechkin/Kovalchuk team next year although hopefully St Louis gets traded to the West so he can play too.

The camera thing bugged me too though, although it made me think of how hard it is to see this sort of shit the first time its on the screen - I almost wonder if the judges should be allowed to see an instant reply before they give their votes, some of the quicker moves like the players putting the puck through their legs are easy to miss live.

EDIT: Actually now that I think about it while a few skaters stood out to me the only two of the 12 who weren't very good were Datsyuk(who definitely has the potential to be as exciting as anyone in shootouts so I fully expect him to be more interesting next year) and Nabakov. I looked at the scoring summary and it spurred my memory and it seemed like everyone else was pretty cool on at least one attempt. I think going first probably hurt Datsyuk, had he gone later I think it would have clicked for him and he'd have done more. Look for him to do better next year I think!

For reference:

Qualifying Round (points earned for creativity)
Pavel Datsyuk (West) vs. Tomas Vokoun (East), 36 (10-26).
Martin St. Louis (East) vs. Evgeni Nabokov (West), 22 (8-14).
Ryan Getzlaf (West) vs. Tim Thomas (East) 58 (28-30).
Ilya Kovalchuk (East) vs. Manny Legace (West) 52 (22-30).
Marian Gaborik (West) vs. Rick DiPietro (East) 54 (24-30).
Alex Ovechkin (East) vs. Chris Osgood (West), 57 (24-33).

Final
Getzlaf vs. Thomas, 52 (32-20).
x-Ovechkin vs. Osgood, 60 (35-25).

I was at the Michigan/Michigan State hockey game last night (fucking refs it should have been 3-1 MSU instead of 2-2) so I didn't get to watch this when it was actually airing. I did DVR it though so I watched it later last night when I was kind of drunk. Ovechkin's shoot out attempts were by far the most entertaining and I thought it was pretty gay that whoever attempted to shoot on their knees was pretty much robbed by the goalie. No shit it's going to be easy to stop a shot when the guy is coming at you on his knees. I don't remember too much else to be completely honest because it was really pretty boring. It took like 20 minutes to announce all the allstars in the beginning and all the events to me seemed pretty disorganized and half-assed. I'm not sure if I'll watch the actual game tonight either because I usually enjoy the skills competition more and considering how that went..

missed this aswell, never seen it before so it would have been nice, but it was during my bday party, so cba to throw everyone out then to watch some skills competition.

Better luck next year :p Cool fact that I found out this week, Gretzky has the same bday as me. I'm the next great one ;)

Not sure if any of you are interested, but I noticed nhl.com spammed me about a second-half-only fantasy game that starts tomorrow or something so I figured I'd post about it in case any of you(especially those of you who didn't joint he smogon league) wanna play or whatever

I'm in a public league currently, unlike normal fantasy multiple people can own the same players so I'll probably be all noob and just make a team of my favorites <3

http://benchboss.nhl.com/boss_s/display1.asp?page=homepage&GameID=31&TeamNumber=

Also for those of you who missed the all-star shit nhl.com's nhl.tv thing has most of it

EDIT: also much to no one's surprise Selanne is officially back, I got him in two leagues and have Jagr/Havlat/St. Louis/Holmstrom for RW in the other. Smogon is probably my weakest RW with the same as that team except Zherdev over St. Louis, not sure if I'd have used Selanne over Zherdev had Carl not beat me to the punch or not.

In real life news that's not good for the rest of the league fuck the ducks adksddasdsds

Yeah, I've been checking the status on Selanne daily since I picked him up just to see when he'd finally make it official. I guessed right after the All-Star break and I was spot on. Here's hoping for me he ends up being worth while.

I took a look at NHL.com's thing and joined the first random public league as well. This system confuses me and I really didn't want to put the effort into learning what to do but here's the people I picked up:

hockey.JPG

My thought process: Anaheim looks pretty well positioned to have a great second half so I grabbed Giguere first.. they're bound to win more games. Then I decided to just stay with players I'm using at the moment in yahoo. Much easier to root for the same players than a large set of different ones. So I grabbed Getzlaf, Thornton, Daniel Sedin, Pronger, Hemsky and Kubina and then evaluated my money situation. Going back to the Ducks again I grabbed Perry since him playing well helps Getzlaf. I then added my new favorite Red Wing Dan Cleary. I picked up Henrik Sedin with the same mentality I used with Perry/Getzalf. Running low on cash.. I went with Niittymaki as a second netminder since I'm gambling with him anyway on yahoo. My last slot was at D with 3,225,000 left to spend. Enter Dan Boyle who is projected to have a good second half after coming back from injury because of free agency coming up for him at the season's end.

Who'd you pick up Synre?????

Too lazy to be super cool and screenshot it but

C Datsyuk
C Backstrom
C Koivu
W Ovechkin
W Holmstrom
W Bertuzzi
W Miettinen
D Markov
D Enstrom
D Boyle
G Brodeur
G Legace

I started with my two favorite players in Brodeur and Holmstrom and I figured Legace was entertaining enough last weekend that I'd try him out for a while. I hit Ovechkin, Koivu, Enstrom, Backstrom, and Datsyuk first for fan value(I'd have liked to have snagged Sundin and Cleary but I felt they were a little too overpriced to justify picking up as much as I love them) and just kinda filled the roster out from there, it only left like 11mill~ left for 2 wings and 2 d so I ended up snagging Bertuzzi and Miettinen who are both undervalued for top line duty on top 4 teams in the west, Miettinen breaks the team of favorites thing but I like Bertuzzi in a pity kind of way. That left me with quite a bit of cash to work with on D, I debated on going Rafalski or Lidstrom + someone terrible but I ended up decided to snag Markov and Boyle since they're likely to be nearly as productive as the wings D individually and I got two of them.

Moderator double postin'

The NHL.com game is cool I think since it isn't dependent on the rest of the league staying active, much like smogon several of my public leagues only have like 6-7 of the 12 actively playing so it's cool that with the system in that game the league is almost irrelevant.

Why I wanted to post though - I don't think there's anything quite as amusing to log on to for a fantasy owner, especially since I have him in three leagues:

lolpimuy9.jpg

psycho seems to have terrible luck, im having one of the most epic fantasy nights prolly anyone has had in this league yet. wow.

Sabres roar out to 4-0 lead, beat the Lightning (lol) 4-2 in the end. Ladies and gents, the turnaround has come.

I was at the Michigan/Michigan State hockey game last night (fucking refs it should have been 3-1 MSU instead of 2-2) so I didn't get to watch this when it was actually airing.

How did that game go. It would be fun to go to because I have like 9 friends I played with last year that are on those teams!

The circus that is my fantasy team entertains again, now the skaters are performing correctly(although the PPP isn't quite where I want it) but the goalies are a mess. I can't seem to get everything working competently at once, it's alternating feast and famine on both sides. I'm not even getting average goaltending(or skaters before) its just fucking terrible.

Souray being injured isn't really helping much but whatever ~_~ The poor guy is having a hell of a bad year.

Also I hope that last minute collapse by the Sabres doesn't hurt them too bad long term, they were finally starting to win again and then got scored on by Tobias future-norris-winner-but-hasn't-scored-since-november Enstrom on a 6-on-3 with like 20s to go, that can't be good psychologically :( Kinda a bummer ignoring the fact it helped me a lot in fantasy too since it's no good for the Caps for the Thrashers to have stolen two points there >:(

I have this feeling Holmstrom probably isn't going to make it to playoff time btw, he's getting gooned hardcore nearly every game(Colorado and Anaheim in particular), he'll probably be on IR again by the end of the month. It really annoys me how many people are just allowed to commit penalties on him because he's got a reputation for standing in front of the net, there is enough uncalled interference and crosschecking for Detroit to be on a 5on3 pretty much the entire game.
