The Everything NHL Thread

MSU vs UM is always entertaining because the crowd intensity is on a whole other level. Obviously the players have a larger intensity being that it's a rivalry game but with that and the fans it's just amazing. The game was 1-0 UM for a short period of time, then MSU got a 5-on-3 and took advantage with 2 quick goals. It stayed 2-1 for the 2nd and most of the 3rd. There was a shot for MSU which was ruled no goal despite the puck clearly going into the net and quickly ricocheting out. Then with like a minute left in the 3rd UM had a cross check/interference that wasn't called in front of the goal and a deflection went off an MSU player and bounced in our net. It went to OT but nothing really happened with that obviously and had to settle for a tie.

In fantasy news, I have half my goals and 2/3 my assists from one player. Awesome. And Ryan Miller got yanked because of a leg injury so no good for me or the Sabres.

Sorry for my prolonged absence guys, been having trouble getting on with work and training and what not...but ill be on more often now :)

So how bout the Canucks on a 7 game slide

EDIT - Can someone link me to the league and let me know what my logon was please as i am on a new laptop cause my hd failed on my old one

I was really glad to see the Devils pull a win out on the Penguins last night even though they mostly got stomped for the first 38 minutes or so, gotta take 'em how you can get 'em I guess. I was a combination of amused and annoyed that Brodeur let in a PPG on a penalty he committed though, lol >:(. Can't do that, Marty !

I'm curious how the Sabres will look tonight, I haven't seen anything definitive about whether or not Miller can play but they really need him, especially since it looks like Afinogenov is out for even longer(not that he's been doing anything anyway). I'm still hoping they managed to sneak into the playoffs but man it's not looking good with the entire Atlantic, Boston, Montreal, Ottawa, and probably two shitty Southeast teams eating potential playoff spots. I am also hoping Phoenix sneaks in because the concept of them being in the playoffs after how bad they were at the beginning of this year is hysterical to me. Comedic value would be best if they managed to get in over Anaheim due to the Bryzgalov thing and also the fact Anaheim is a bunch of a tools.

In fantasy news even though I've fallen off a bit in the smogon league(and looking at the schedule for the rest of the year I think I'll probably not get a first round bye, no one has a really terrible schedule for the last five weeks but I think mine is probably the worst with Carl, Psycho, gr33n, and Dunyain/Rips when Statsny and Heatley/Crosby get off the shelf), I'm in my best overall position so far this year with 2nd/2nd/1st/2nd. 4 points short of the league lead in the Roto league although unless a miracle occurs to fix my goaltending it's going to be tough to climb there and my 2nd place head to head team is against the #1 team who has such a ridiculously stacked roster that I don't think I can handle him head to head anyway >:(.

The bench boss thing is cool though, my world rank is up to 69th which is still a long ways away but certainly feels a lot closer than the 1k+ i was last week. Considering this version is only half season it seems like it would be really worthwhile to drop the 11 dollars on the extra 275 trades if I wanted to try to really make a push for 1st(and the exponentially more valuable prize) but I'm not sure I want to throw money at it since the odds of losing still suck and unless Detroit makes the finals I'd have to try and sell the tickets anyway. Somewhat amusingly I dropped Miettinen for Clarkson when Lehtinen got off IR and he's gotten 2 goals, an assist, +3, and 5 PIM in the two games since. I also enjoy that Brodeur 2 PIM and assist last night actually counts in that game, I fully expect to tie assists and lose PIM by 1 because of it.

Sabres are now 2 points out of 8th place! And we play the 8th place team, Boston, Friday night. All they needed was to break that terrible slump, and it's ON BITCHES.

I better start showing some Canadien colors

because they are 1 point from the lead in the east and are playing Ottawa saturday :D

who would have thought, nobody had them in the play-offs

i would love for them to keep on winning, huet is carrying my team recently!

I still regret dropping him for Emery, thought he would be a solid #1 goalie with a decent senators defence in front. Couldn't have been more wrong.

Also joining the "showing Canadiens colors" campaign, I love to see them in the playoffs :)

Too bad I can't watch much hockey now anymore, started an internship for my graduation, so working 6 days a week atm, so nightly hockey games would be shit to watch, would be dead at work :p

Still wondering if I can watch the playoffs aswell, espn360 has a playoff offer for new subscribers, but there isnt any package available for the current customers, kinda lame if you ask me.

More Forsberg talk... apparently he is close to signing with the Flyers which would be interesting considering the roll that team is on already. Should be interesting to see how that turns out. We probably won't hear the end of this until he signs or the deadline passes. Word is that he's going to make a call in the next week. Thoughts?

Flyers seem like a smart choice from his side, I really see them as a possible suprise contender (seeing how Wings/Sens we're #1 choices for the final about the whole season) for the Playoffs.

With adding Forsberg to their lineup again, I can see them have a go at the cup. I would rather see Forsberg coming back to the Av's though, but he wants to play at a contender, and I just don't see the Av's do that.

The only way I could possibly hate the Flyers more than I do already is if Forsberg joined up with them. It sort of makes sense for him as far as winning a cup although if he wants to win I don't see why he is so averse to going to Ottawa or Detroit(hi there Forsberg it's not 96-02 anymore). I think the odds are good it will happen and he will play a grand total of about fifteen regular season games but it should be interesting come playoff time.

Yeah, I'm with Teifu. I was never a big Forsberg fan, and him coming back to the Flyers will only fuel my hatred toward them.

In other news, the Sabres play Boston tonight but I'm going to a bday party and will miss the 3rd period. Shit. But the Rangers are in 7th place in the East, and not only did they lose tonight, the Sabres have 4 games in hand on them. All we need to do is get 3 points and we have our playoff spot back.

A joke!

pretty typical wings/ducks game I guess, excessive amount of uncalled penalties, inconsistant calls, ducks score a goal assisted by someone who should have clearly been in the box on the previous play, goal waived at the end that shouldn't have been waived(and should have had another ducks goal waived for the same reason if the refs were consistant)... it's like last spring all over again except without Lilja being as retarded!

I was about to say "Sabres got 3 unanswered in the 2nd period to go up 3-1," but fucking Jokinen scored in the last minute of the period to get to 3-2.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Richard Zednik.

I was watching it in real time, and believe me when I say that I have never been more afraid for someone else's life than I was in those 15 minutes. I was an emotional wreck, because nobody knew if he was alive or not. Rick Jeanneret and Harry Neale handled the situation beautifully and sympathetically, I think they deserve some praise for it. But they kept emphasizing how quiet the arena was; you could've heard a pin drop, I've never heard such silence from 19,000 people. And I'll admit, when they finally announced over the loudspeaker that Zednik was stable and on his way to the hospital, I lost it. And Buffalo showed their class with a lenghty standing ovation.

Vin and I discussed it last night, and once again style and comfort and stubbornness of the players is overriding safety. This should make everyone realize they need to wear neck protection, whether it's uncomfortable or not. (And the last time this happened, it was Buffalo's Clint Malarchuk... why is it always in Buffalo?)

Anyways, we won. Yay.

i saw the highlight and i honestly cannot handle watching stuff like that. That was a LOT of blood, and it literally exploded out of his neck. I knew it was coming too, i cant imagine having to watch that happen out of nowhere. Thank god he had the presence of mind to bullet to the bench, i think if he wasted 5 more seconds he would have died. Terrible, terrible moment.

You guys all know this is the SECOND time this has happened at the SAME FREAKING HOCKEY RINK weird as hell yo. Glad to hear Zednik was ok just like the first guy this happened to was.

Also just wondering what every one thinks of this. I have a shirt with the goalie who got his jugular slit 10 years ago in Buffalo for my friends record label, Double or Nothing Records. What do you guys think of that as fellow hockey fans?

Go Devils.

I've managed to avoid actually seeing the Zednik footage thus far but based on what I've heard he's pretty fortunate to be alive, especially since the skate only got one artery in spite of drilling a 1.5in x 1.5in area, which wasn't completely severed. I really have to give his presence of mind and the medical staff credit, that could very easily have been a lot worse than it ended up being. I'm sure the players would be reluctant to use one but the idea of some sort of neck protector should really get tossed around, anything there that would feasibly prevent a blade from slashing it would be awesome. Of course, I also think visors probably shouldn't be optional either so I like to err on the side of safety but the NHL is pretty much fucked as soon as someone dies and I'd rather not see that happen regardless.

It really puts things into perspective though, as angry as I was at the incompetent refs a few hours before that happened there are a lot worse things than losing a hockey game.

In less morbid news, Stillman and Commodore for Corvo and Eaves. The Versus guys like this deal for Ottawa a lot but I really don't, it'll make them better this year, for sure, but both of them are free agents after this year. Ottawa is pushing the 'win right now' thing really hard, and they have every right to, but they're really setting themselves up to have some major problems about four years from now, especially with the giant salary hit their top line + whichever goalie they end up keeping long term applies. Losing solid young talent is inevitable in this type of trade but Ottawa hasn't exactly been known for its depth so I'm not sure how well they'll endure this. Apparently they are pretty strong as far as prospects currently though so maybe I am wrong here, either way I like the trade for Carolina a lot more. I don't think they'll end up in the playoffs(although if Atlanta trades Hossa like they should all bets are off) due to Atlanta or Washington winning the abysmal Southeast, but unlike the two players they traded the two they are getting both actually have contracts past this season which will help them get back in the race next year.

Actually, Stillman AND Commodore have both played for my hometown team, the Flames.

Stillman is a jerk. With the right support though, he'll burn alot of teams. He's worth it for a cup run on a cheap trade.

Commodore...well he played for the flames during their cup run that year. I hated him, despite loving the flames, cause he was ungainly and awkward. I think he got into the NHL cause of his size, to be honest, since defensemen are loved for three things:

1. Size. Chara is a good example of WHY this is selected for. His poke check ALONE can get a person into all stars. Also look at him fight and hit.

2. Shot power. Al McInnis made a CAREER of his shot. So did Souray. If you can blast it from the point, you might have a powerplay place.

3. Ability to hit. Coincidentally, Regehr can't skate or shoot...but man does he hit. I bet we can all name someone who can do that on just about any team.

What does commodore do? Aside from the novelty of the giant ginger afro outside his helmet.

Also, Teifu: Ottawa isn't just pushing for the win this year. Lets look back over the last few years. They actually do deserve a cup and they are trying to reward their fans with one. I mean look at the talent they developed and you'll see why: Alfredsson, Havlat, Hossa, Spezza, Emery (okay, his earring is talent but that's enough right?), Phillips...etc etc etc. Look how well they've been managed too!!!

Ottawa has had a very solid talent pool, much like Detroit or Colorado, for the last few years. They are amazing at scouting and developing, which builds long term character and talent. However, I do agree; they are running for the cup. Again, another however, I was certain the Heatley deal was a cup run too. They kept him. Detroit has done that with several players many times...and they are what place in the league a few years after?

In conclusion, I prefer the trade for Ottawa. When you are going for the cup (and apparently trying to go for broke) a 4th year in a row (or so), you really need to do what you can. They have been slumping lately, since even Montreal's best season in a while is almost up to par with them, and they need to score. Ottawa has never been a 'defense' team, not since Lalime. They have been a 'score as much as you can, as fast as you can and don't stop for any reason' team and just HOPE you end up with more. Also, Stillman has something in him. That guy has a shot I haven't seen since Iginla, he just needs someone to pass...and Staal can only shoot. :D

I think Ottawa will be a real contender though the loss of Corvo saddens me. I like the senators and have been a Spezza fan since he was in the OHL. Also on Synre's talk of their prospects they do have some solid prospects in system, in fact containing a defenseman that I played against. They have a solid crew of forward prospects headed up by Demitrakos and Ben Blood as the defenseman I know. He wont be up for a while because as far as I know he will play a couple years at UND before going to the NHL, possibly all 4 because I know that defenseman are given a little more time to develop in college as opposed to forwards.

On the subject of prospects, I am interested in Buffalo's forward prospects that look fairly good. I know Corey Tropp who is playing for MSU right now and he could definitely be a solid player in the next few years. I remember when he scored from behind the net on my team in the US Selects... sigh.

However on the note of prospects, St Louis has such a variety of good and AWFUL ones. It bothers me though that alot of these prospects in the NHL i have played with or against. The Blues have T.J. Oshie who will be good once he gets out of UND and also Aaron Palushaj who is like 4th in the nation for scoring as a freshman at Michingan. Both of them are solid and Palushaj should be good in a couple of years. I was lucky enough to be able to play with him at US Selects and he definitely knows where to be on the ice and has a wicked shot, look out Legace! On a different note, the Blues drafted Trevor Nill who was definitely not good in my league last year which leads me to believe that that draft pick was a waste!

The wings also have Justin Abdelkader who is solid for MSU and iirc assisted on the game winner that one MSU the national championship last year. He is a good player for sure and will probably be good in the NHL, though I am not sure if the Wings will use him or not. The Red Wings always have a ridiculous amount of good prospects though so I am sure that they will be all set in the coming years, what with Grigorenko and Larsson and Howard as goaltending. The Wings are just setting themselves up for being New England Patriots of the NHL!

Also its disheartening seeing all of these players I played with or against going to the NHL...sigh

You guys all know this is the SECOND time this has happened at the SAME FREAKING HOCKEY RINK weird as hell yo. Glad to hear Zednik was ok just like the first guy this happened to was.

Actually, Malarchuk got cut down the street at the Sabres old arena, the Memorial Auditorium. But yeah, it's pretty creepy.

Also just wondering what every one thinks of this. I have a shirt with the goalie who got his jugular slit 10 years ago in Buffalo for my friends record label, Double or Nothing Records. What do you guys think of that as fellow hockey fans?

I don't get it. Is is a shirt with Malarchuk's face? Is it a jersey with his name and number? If so, I see nothing wrong. If it's a picture of him holding his neck while bleeding out on the ice, no, I don't like it.

Yeah I agree, if it it is Malarchuk bleeding and holding his neck that is pretty wrong and just the thought of seeing him holding his neck makes me cringe, but if it is his number or whatever, then yeah, that I fine as far as I am concerned.

Sabres pull out a 1-0 win over Toronto last night. I know it sounds like a boring game, but with Miller making 36 saves, TRUST ME, it was fucking intense to watch. We're now 8-0-2 in our last ten, and the win moves us up into 7th in the East. Shit yeah, boys.
