Adamant Nature
- Toxic
- Knock Off
- Leaf Blade
- Substitute / Defog / Sacred Sword / everything you want if you don't run sub
lol this is such a bad set

So. This set's purpose is to Toxic a wall on the switch, crippling it. Sub can be used to Toxic a wall more reliably, Leaf Blade takes out Groundceus and all Grass weak mons. Knock Off cripples walls, removing their item. Defog can be used to have some hazard control, Sacred Sword cuz it's cool, Synth for recovery, et cetera. Note that Kartana's HP are not pair so it takes less from EH and subs more reliabely.

Kartana @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Beast Boost
Level: 50

EVs: 212 HP / 4 Atk / 132 Def / 4 SpD / 156 Spe
Impish Nature
- Leaf Blade
- Knock Off

Here it is boys, the set that divides our community. I've been using this a lot on stream and I think it's sick. It's designed to annoy a bunch of common stuff like Mimikyu, Gyarados, Hippowdon, Metagross, Ferrothorn, Breloom, Tyranitar, Mamoswine, Azumarill, Swampert, and Bulu. Standard Kart is able to handle all these to a certain extent as well, but this set is able to switch in easier and more times. Helmet chip, Toxic on switches, and Synthesis means this guy stays around for quite a while while racking up damage for either itself to pick off for a Beast Boost, or eases it for its teammates.

I think I really like this thing because it reminds me of the Rocky Helmet Serperior set that became really popular in ORAS. It kinda did the same thing as this, except spread Glare around instead of Toxic/Knock, and boosted with Leaf Storm instead of Beast Boost. Both were tailored to beating really meta stuff (Kang+Chomp vs Mimikyu+Gyara etc)

The EVs aren't really anything special, it just outspeeds adamant Mimikyu with as much bulk as possible.
+2 252+ Atk Mimikyu Never-Ending Nightmare (140 BP) vs. 212 HP / 132+ Def Kartana: 135-159 (83.8 - 98.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Level: 50
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Leaf Blade
- Tailwind
- Sacred Sword/Night Slash/Smart Strike/Psycho Cut

If tailwind can work in VGC, why not in singles? Z-Tailwind doubles Kartana doubles speed allowing Kartana to obtain a psuedo-Rock Polish. Combine this with Swords Dance, and you have a Psuedo-Double Dance set It works well against Balanced team, where you can set set up swords Dance and Tailwind. Against more offensive teams, set up Tailwind first. Even if you can't sweep, you can open an opportunity for another team member.

Truly enlightened individuals understand the potential of this set, as most mortal players would need PSYCHIC powers to see this coming.

Kartana @ Psychium Z
Ability: Beast Boost
Level: 50
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance
- Psycho Cut
- Leaf Blade
- Vacuum Wave / Sacred Sword / Knock Off

This set is prepared to TOTALLY MISH "counters" to Kartana such as PhysDef Mega Venu and Mega Blaziken. The goal of this set is to bring Kart in on something it scares out, SD, and then break on through to the other side with your crazy coverage Z-move. Once these Kartana answers are gone, take your Beast Boost and slice and dice your way to victory. It should be noted that this set is optimally used with rocks support, as the chip guarantees key KOs. Vacuum Wave is a neat niche option to pick off anything that lives your Z-move or to surprise common fast Focus Sash users like Gren - plus, even though it's a special attack getting the KO you still get an attack raise! If you elect for a more standard 4th move, Sacred Sword or Knock Off give you the best options to hit other Kartana checks like Heatran and Aegislash.

Calcs:
+1 252 Atk Kartana Shattered Psyche (140 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Mega Venusaur: 192-226 (102.6 - 120.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO
0- SpA Kartana Vacuum Wave vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Greninja: 24-30 (16.2 - 20.2%) -- possible 5HKO (take out those pesky low health Grens!)
+2 252 Atk Kartana Sacred Sword vs. 212 HP / 4 Def Heatran: 248-294 (128.4 - 152.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO
+2 252 Atk Kartana Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Aegislash-Shield: 200-236 (119.7 - 141.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO

With Rocks support:
+2 252 Atk Kartana Shattered Psyche (140 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Mega Blaziken: 490-578 (316.1 - 372.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO
- comes out to ~79-93.2% through Protect and 12.5% from SR into Vacuum Wave (7-9%) guarantees the KO on Kickin' Chicken.
+2 252 Atk Kartana Shattered Psyche (140 BP) vs. 212 HP / 4 Def Mega Salamence: 163-192 (82.7 - 97.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock (common HP/Def investment for Bulky SpD Mence)

- Sacred Sword / Smart Strike / Knock Off

Standard Choice Scarf Kartana, but Guillotine gives you a more reliable revenge killing and sweeping tool.

Just kidding. Guillotine allows you to potentially snatch a KO on more passive mons that could wall or cripple a normal Choice Scarf set, such as Toxapex, Celesteela, and Zapdos. However, it's more for hitting them on their switch in; staying in could result in you being KOed by Fire-type coverage, or being crippled by burns, which can also be done by the aforementioned Pokemon.

cant say's PhysDef

Was a tough choice for me between this and Z-Tailwind, but the Z-Tailwind set sadly has a bit of 4MSS, between SD, Tailwind, Leaf Blade, and fitting in a coverage move that will end up in some common mon to walling you no matter what you choose. Not to say it isn't an innovative submission, just not my first pick.

Congratulations to cant say for winning this week's Next Best Thing! Your submission will be logged in the Archive!
This week's subject is one of the best buggy bois in battle spot: Volcarona! Thanks to it's solid speed and special attack Volcarona is a strong sweeper that can be difficult to stop. In addition, Volcarona can run a variety of different sets and Z-moves thanks to it's wide movepool . So, with all that in mind, what is The Next Best Thing (TM) for Volcarona?

You have until Sunday (4/1) at 9:00 p.m. EST (GMT-5) to post your submissions. Best of luck to everyone!

- Will-O-Wisp

- Roost
- Quiver Dance / U-turn / Coverage

Bulky Volcarona. The basis of the set is Volc's ability to check stuff like Mega Metagross, Mimikyu, Mega Lucario, and Kartana. The speed with Timid allows you to outspeed Adamant Mimikyu, and the HP EVs let you switch into rocks twice from full health instead of once (thrice if you count the Mago Berry.) Will-O-Wisp relieves Volcarona's meh bulk and allows it to better check the aforementioned Pokemon. Roost keeps you healthy, and Fire STAB is a must on any Volc set. Quiver Dance allows you to sweep, U-turn gives you pivot into another threat on forced switches, and coverage of your choice allows to chip or beat stuff like Tapu Fini and Toxapex. Whirlwind is an option, but Volcarona would usually rather Will-O-Wisp, U-turn out, or attack a booster (either that, or Volc already loses to said sweeper anyways.) Alternatively, either Will-O-Wisp or Roost can be dropped to make room to run both Quiver Dance and a coverage move in the same moveset.

Volcarona can already force a lot of switches, so why not try to captilize this with Substitute? ( This set is taken directly from OU. ) With a few Quiver Dances, Volcarona can sweep. Substitute takes advantage of the switches it forces. Swarm boosts Bug Buzz to astounding leves being able to blow past some of Volc's usual counters.

Grassium is an amazing Volc set because it lets volc breat through targets it could never dream of defeating normally, this mainly being bulky waters like Tapu Fini, or ground types like Hippowdon. Hp Ice further increases the normally poor matchups against things like Lando and Mence, which makes volc even better than before! subswarm and bloom doom are already sets and have been "things" for a long time now. voting for one to be the "next best" doesn't seem right to me. That said, I really do see potential in bulky Wisp + Roost. Volc lures in things like Lando, Gyara, Mence, and Azu, and getting burns on them can really help enable a counter-sweep from one of your own Pokemon in the back. I would have nommed this myself if I wasn't so slow lol.

so Darkinium

Moose and Goose's Grassium. This is sort of already a thing as cant say pointed out, but i've always used hp ground + psychium z so this new to me. I like the idea of blowing up hippo turn 1 and just beating hippo mence aegi koko + bulky water teams which are everywhere these days. Only really walled by tran which is pretty easy to deal with using the rest of your team.

Darkinium's Bulky Mago
I seem to find myself wanting to have a bulkier volc more often than a volc with more offensive prowess, but I must admit that bug buzz would be a really nice thing to have on volc alongside a super powerful z-move for sub Gren.

Congratulations to Darkinium for winning this week's Next Best Thing! Your submission will be logged in the Archive!
This week's subject is the extra spooky ghost: Gengar! Mega Gengar is great in the battle spot metagame thanks to its amazing speed tier, great special attack, and access to some useful support moves. Whether it's cheesing your opponents with Perish Trapping or CasinoGar, or using Hex + Status to break through opponents, Gengar is a fantastic mon in Battle Spot. So, with all that in mind, what is The Next Best Thing (TM) for Gengar?

I guess you could nominate a regular Gengar set if you want (even though it's pretty bad).

You have until Sunday (4/7) at 9:00 p.m. EST (GMT-5) to post your submissions. Best of luck to everyone!
