The Rubik's cube

I am just wondering how many people can actually solve one . How many people have tried several days trying to figure out how to solve one, several weeks even, and felt like throwing the thing across the room. I just want to hear people's experience's and whether or not you know how to solve one. My best time is 29 seconds. I have not tried memorizing a new pattern, because i would have a lot of memorizing to do. Once you know how to solve one, it really isn't that hard. The hardest part i think is having enough patience to learn how to solve one, which involves a lot of memorization. It took me about two weeks to learn how to solve it. I just want to know if anyone can do a crazy time of like under 20 seconds. The fastest known time is about ten seconds.

They've never interested me much. I've had goes on them before but I just don't seem to have the type of mind that can solve those sort of puzzles - probably why they don't interest me lol. I do have a mate that can do them very quickly though, somewhere in the 20-30 sec range :o

(props on the dwm name/avatar heh)

Some time before summer, in school, I noticed a few people with Rubik's cube and that lead me to find my old one. It was in pretty bad quality, one of the stickers (I figured it was green, since I could only find eight green stickers) were peeled off and some others were on the verge of the same fate. I looked up how to solve it and found a few websites, but nothing helped until I found a video. It showed the layer method and eventually I knew how to solve the first two layers. I have yet to remember enough of the third layer patterns to solve the whole cube mainly because I've lost interest in it.

There was a girl at my high school who could always do it in under two minutes. The mental significance of this escapes me, but it probably indicates some kind of superior task-oriented thinking capacity.

I always tried a Rubik's Cube, but I could never solve it lol. I have seen videos of doing it very quickly which often amazes me. I don't know anyone that can do it quickly though (I never asked...ehehe).

I go to school with the OP, and last year at our school the Rubik's cube saw a brief popularity shortly following its introduction by one of the more popular math teachers. I use the 7-step beginner's method (I have no idea what it's officially called) and I average about 5 minutes, which isn't really that fast; most of the people at our school can complete it in under a minute. I actually did most of my cubing back in middle school before it gained local popularity.

Can anyone find a link to a website that explains how to do it? I couldn't find anything useful.
I like showing one side finished to someone and having them suprised at thinking I solved the entire thing. I tried to finish one a couple years ago but never got around to actually doing it.

I never really had the patience to solve puzzles like this. My sister did though, and it probably took her a week and a half to finally solve the thing without looking at the guide.

I know someone from my uni who can solve a rubik's cube without even looking at it. You can talk to her while she's solving it and then before you know it, she's done.

I know my time isn't anywhere near 30secs but it is about 1min or so. Took me about 1-2weeks to learn then I had to re-learn a new method which was about 1week. I think I broke at least ONE cube because I wasn't getting the results I wanted when I was learning.

I will have to agree that learning to solve it was killer. I kept forgetting which way to turn R(right) and R'(right inverse.) Also the algorithms took a bit to record not to long (I really wanted to learn ^_^)

Well one of my best friends can solve a rubik's cube in about 40 seconds. I solved one once, with his assistance, but I never got really interested enough to learn how to do it consistently on my own

Though I haven't tried in ages (last time I touched one of these was in middle school) I could always solve them under 5 minutes or so.

One of the guys in my grade can do it in 40 seconds. I've never completed one. Last time I TOUCHED one was in year 5 :P

I was asked to solve a Rubik's cube in an interview with Goldmann Sachs Investment Bank. After about 8 minutes, I was almost done, but the guy stopped me. I think it may be why I was not asked to return for a second interview =(

If only I had had one when I was little.

Has anyone ever met anyone who has actually solved one without assistance? Because, to my knowledge I never have..

Have a nice day.

I can do one in about a minute, my friend's fastest time is 18 secs. It's kinda a craze at my school, you can't really walk 10 metres without seeing one (and it's spreading to neighbouring schools now!). There's alot of people nearing the 30 second mark at my school.

My classmate carries a rubik's cube to school before. He solved it without assistance at the end of class

I don't think its possible to solve one just mucking around with it because of the steps involved. Once you are taught how to do these steps then you can begin to do it faster. I went on youtube to find a video of a guy showing how to finish one. I can say i've solved a Rubik's Cube but I couldn't do it again without help.

What kind of Rubik's Cube are you talking about? 3 x 3's?
Also, near the end of my first year in high school, lots of people began to take their Rubik's Cubes with them and solve them when they were bored in class. I myself can't solve one, probably because I don't have the patience to learn how to do it.
...but, holy shit, some kid can solve a 5 x 5 in under a minute...

I am talking about a 3x3. Yes i can, i have solved a lot of times, too many too count. I don't need a book or anything to tell me how. I have never tried a 4x4 but i am sure that i could learn how to in two or three days. To get really fast, you pretty much have to know exactly how to solve it. And have really fast reflexes. I don't have great reflexes to do a 3x3 in under twenty someday probably. I started to get involved when a couple people at my school were learning, and only two people could solve it. I usually get around 40 seconds. I don't want to memorize like fifty different algorithms to solve it under twenty, if my brain can even comprehend that. As Kikuichimonji said, it was a pretty big fad at our school and still is sort of. I will have to see how many people still bring there cube to school. If any at all, even want to do it anymore. I think a lot of people gave up trying to get faster after breaking a minute. I don't know. It really isn't possible to solve it by mucking around, unless it is close to being solved.

I can solve it, but not in a record time or anything, usually i do it for turns, i do a little leave it alone and go back to it.
