The Soccer thread

Since this is Soccer thread, I was looking at FIFA world cup rankings (updated for June) and I saw so many places I have never heard of, like the second to worst team (worst Papua New Guinea dropping 11) was Montserrat, who are they, personally I have never heard of them, some others would be Macau, Timor-Leste, Chinese-Taipei (I know where China is but I had no clue this place Taipei? Had a team. Of course all these teams suck, sorry if any of you root for those teams.
A lot of them are in the Asia-Oceania or Caribbean area. Lots of independent island nations, as well as other tiny countries. Basically, nations with little footy interest, small population (and in-turn a small talent pool), and teams practically made up of semi-pros and amateurs. Shame really that Chinese-Taipei is one of them, I'm half-Taiwanese. It'd be nice to root for them without it being futile.

And yeah, what gaudetjaja said. Chinese-Taipei is the designated sporting name for Taiwan/the Republic of China*. A long political mess to do with China and Taiwan's political status.

*The "Republic of China" is basically Taiwan and other small islands around it. The "People's Republic of China" is mainland China, and its other territories. Just figured I'd mention that, since the similar names just makes things more messy.

Back to Euro 08, I agree with everyone here. Loved the Turkey-Czech Republic game. Really dramatic comeback. Just because of the nature of their qualification for the knock-out stages, I'd love to see Turkey go far.

Also, tonight, I'll be rooting on Austria (1/4 Austrian too, heh). If they win, Germany really won't hear the end of it, and considering no one gave Austria a hope (myself included), to see them make it to the knockout stages would be great.

Goal Difference isn't used. Head to head results are. If Sweden and Russia draw it will go to penelties just like Turkey vs Czech.R would have done.
From what I understand, the tie-breaking criteria is: head-to-head results > goal difference > goals scored and if all of those are tied, then it'll go to penalties. So unfortunately, it won't go to pens if its a draw, Sweden will go through.

That's right. Head-to-head results is the first criteria, but not the only one.

Yeah, being my team from CONCACAF i can tell i have seen games against Caribbean teams.

It's the little silly dream from FIFA to have countries from all over the world compete, but i think before some teams could do so they should pass over other stages or some sort of growing, because USA 8-0 Barbados on the first leg tell us how much hope these teams held.

This is the soccer thread indeed, more like the Euro soccer thread, maybe we could talk a bit about the World cup qualification too?, Argentina barely draw 1-1 with Ecuador at home!, they scored at minute 90+, and also Paraguay beat 2-0 Brazil, which let them keep the lead.

maybe we could talk a bit about the World cup qualification too?

Paraguay 2 - 0 Brazil
Argentina 1 - 1 Ecuador
Perú 1 - 1 Colombia
Bolivia 0 - 2 Chile
Uruguay 1 -1 Venezuela

Paraguay are steamrolling this competition and easily beat Brazil. The World Cup will be the real deal though. Ecuador were ROBBED off their win, that was so dumb (but convenient for us so whatever). Bolivia are really bad now, at least before they were hard to beat at home. Venezuela confirm that their football is getting better and better and pull off an away tie against Uruguay, who play Peru next!!

Peru stupidly gave up the first half an hour or so against Colombia which sucked since we totally had to win. Then we tied and played FAR better than we've played any time recently but the ball just wouldn't go in. Two shots saved from the goal line, two penalties that the ref ignored and a bunch of opportunities that we wasted. Now we have to get an away win vs Uruguay to keep our very faint hopes to go to the World Cup. We already did it last time (3-1) and when we played at Venezuela for Copa América (3-0). However Peru is a really shaky team, sometimes we pull off great wins but most of the time we're crap.

United States beats Barbados 8-0 for their largest ever margin of victory. Granted it's not too much of an accomplishment playing a tiny nation like Barbados, but it's still a good win.

I knew that they were basically small countries with no chance, (USA beating Barbados 8-nil) but thanks for clearing up Chinese-Taipei.

Actually White Sox Fan (by the way I am Bosox) 8-nil was the largest MARGIN of victory but the most goals we ever scored was in a 9-1 win over the Cayman Is. (another tame without a prayer)

It's kind of unfair aswell, USA has made the last 5 world cups but you really have to think just how good are we? We are playing terrible teams (sorry if anyone roots for them) like Barbados and Cuba, and others. I mean we are ranked like 21st or 24th while Barbados is in the 150s.

I think Paraguay won beacause no Ronaldino or Kaka. (did I spell that right?) I like South America beacause you have the awesome teams: Argentina and Brazil, good teams the rest, no one really sucks down there. Do the Falkland Is. play in the South American qualifying and play like Brazil or do they play in Europe (beacause they are owned by British correct?) and play teams like Albania.

Unfortunately for Brazil, Ronaldinho, for the most part of this season, has been unfit. I believe Kaka's healing from an injury he picked up playing for Milan. But Brazil are still an established team without them two; Robinho, Cicinho and Adriano (over-shaped) to name a few. I mean I don't know too much about Paraguay, so I can't voice an opinion about them. For all I know they may be a horrific team, at best, yet managing to beat Brazil - an acomplishment.

In other news: Ronaldo's persistently doing whatever he can say with his voice to the media about a Real move. According to the reports, Ronaldo, apparantly, will be handing in a request form to be released from United in a move to Real after the Euros. There's too much speculation in this saga now, and I just don't know what to believe anymore!

I dunno.... i really don't like Bolivia, and Uruguay it's been disappointing for several years!,

About Caribbean teams, it's funny how Mexico on old times scored like 13-0 against all these countries, but now it was a barely 2-0 against Belize... i think at some point these teams have improved a bit. Other shocking result was Trinidad and Tobago loosing, they suck sure, but they were in the last world cup while Bermuda hasn't been even on the final hexagonal!. Costa Rica (another with at least professional players) draw with Grenade!.

I don't think the defeat of Brazil has anything to do with Kaka, let's stop talking about players like if they were the final solution, i think it has more to do with how well Paraguay played and the good team they assembled, they nullified Brazil since the beginning.

ITALIA!!!!

fucking rediculous though, France did have terrible luck. It was definitely a penalty but the Red card wasn't needed, and the 2nd goal was o.o

I bet £20 that Italy would go through aswell

2-0 for netherlands and 2-0 for italy

I only watched the former though. Romania and france are out.

I liked van persie's 2-0 goal, discuss.

I wouldn't believe what I've seen in the papers or on websites if I was you. He hasn't said anything only that he will only talk after the Euros. I personally think he will stay, but he's just giving journalists licence to say shit by not speaking, which is what pisses me off the most. If he was doing his best to go to Madrid he would have said a long time ago, I think he's looking for a new contract if anything and using Madrid as a bargaining tool.

EDIT: Also I think he enjoys the media spotlight. He said something like: "I enjoy playing in white, for the national team that is". He also said afterwards "For Manchester, I prefer Red" but the newspapers won't say that cos it will make their rumours look like bollocks.

Go Russia and Spain [(BAN ME PLEASE) humping dick meisters beat france ahahaha someone hold me i'm gonna cry]

It'll be nice to actually see Russia in the quarterfinals this year, that's why I'm rooting for them.

Mexico beat barbados in the last eliminatory 10-0 it's nothing to brag about...but anyways USA its a really strong team, i can't wait for the matches of Mexico-USA, it's my only reason to watch the eliminatory, and sudamerican eliminatories are hard, all the teams have a chance, also paraguay it's awesome, that it's why all the great players from paraguay play in mexico

Lol, no way is Croatia going to lose to Turkey. Czech Republic should've beaten the Turks in that game besides. Portugal and Germany will be a great match. Not sure whose going to win for Spain and Italy, but seriously Spain should beat Italy since Toni is such a diver... and of course Netherlands to win their knockout stage match.

um, holy crap

I actually meant to post Croatia - Turkey not the other way around...

although Turkey has been able to pull victories out of their asses lately..

Yeah they certainly have.

USA beat Brazil a couple days ago 1-0 pretty good game.

Since Romania is out, I want to go with Croatia beacause I like the underdogs, and if they go to the semis they probably will be underdogs, unless Sweden/Russia can pull an upset (won't happen) I really look forward to the Portugal Germany game.
