Those Weird Pokémon

Okay, I'm posting this in Stark because it will get more attention, and it's a subject that transcends Pokemon generations, but really it could apply to any generation. My questions is basically as follows:

Are there any Pokemon that, despite tier-ranking or how well they've been used, you have difficulty using them yourself?

I'll give a couple examples, so you know what I mean:

In ADV, Starmie and Heracross were both pretty high-tier pokemon, but I was never really able to use them effectively. Granted, I never really devoted myself to them or anything, and got one quite well without them, but like - I dunno, I just didn't really "get" them. I knew they were good; I'd had plenty of games where I was swept by a Heracross or fucked with by a Starmie, but when I used them, it just didn't work. I didn't see the chances to switch them in, or didn't really know what move to use, or whatever.

In DP, I have similar trouble with Gengar. Again, I don't really know what it is, but I feel like I'm not using him to his full potential when he's on my teams. On paper, and in practice, he's an amazing poke, but for some reason, in my hands, he's just not that great. =/

So what about you guys?

i love using gengar but one poke that i i just recently learned how to use is forry, i always looked upon him as setup bait until pretty recently.

It's wierd and i even know what you're talking about. I don't like cress but i can run a resttalk charge/ice beam set and know how to use it. with forry i'd just consistently lose.

the best solution is probably to watch other people who use the poke effectively. team building in sync with that poke is important too of course

good god i couldnt help noticing you have more posts than chaos even and, how long have you posted!? and also i completely agree. i have a porry and cant come to use it effectively as a maine only as bait. threaten you and let the sab die, that sums up a porry

In GSC, I just couldn't work Kingdra. The fact that I only had Stadium 2 as an opponent probably didn't help. Never tried one in Advance, traded for one in DP, haven't trained it enough for the battle tower (my only source of opponents most of the time).

Also, of all things, I failed at Garchomp. No idea how I managed to suck with it, but somehow I did.

On a sort of related note, I can't work Focus Punch to save my life.

i had that problem for a while. i finally leaned that you use focus early and with ghosts while the spams and non offensives are being used

Oh, and Tyranitar. Fucking ADV Tyranitar, I just always hated the thing. Sandstorm always seemed to fuck with me more than my opponent, I preferred Gyarados and Salamence as DD Sweepers, and I just never felt like I needed boah. I love DP TTar though; go figure.

Running Ninjask & Marowak on Shoddy didn't work as well as I thought it would. I figured that enough speed boosts would be enough to get Marowak up to smashing power and speed, but I guess it didn't work out...maybe one day...*sighs*

gengar isnt that hard to use just run life orb shadow ball, focus blast, explosion, hypnosis and switch in on fighting, normal, ground moves then cause havoc

Cresselia, Blissey, Skarmory, Hippowdon, Spiritomb, Dusknoir, Donfan, Foretress . . . None of these guys has ever really done it for me. I think what you see they have in common. >.>

Odd because I love Claydol in UU. Still, Claydol is more like a Bulky Sweeper than a wall in UU. I love Bulky Sweepers. Can't understand the appeal of walls to save my life.

Spiritomb.

For some reason I just can't use it right. It's supposed to be an awesome pokemon but mine always dies pretty easily =/

So does mine, for some reason. Mine's one of those Spite spamming ones though, and it eats weaker attacker and wall PP like a mad thing. It's just sweepers it has trouble with. Then again, my only experience with it is against the "rarely switch" mentality of the battle tower and PBR.

Spiritomb's defenses aren't that impressive really. A good way to understand it is to imagine if Darkrai tried to be a wall instead (but with better typing/ability/movepool for it).

Metagross, whenever I use him, it feels liking I'm riding an old rickity bike (I'm not joking when I say that, it really does.)

Anything frail; it just doesn't fit my play style.

I used to not like Metagross either, but recently I've been using Jolly LO Gross with a bit of success. Meteor Mash/Zen Headbutt/Earthquake/Thunder Punch seems to work well, and no one expects a Metagross to actually be fast anymore. I would go with CB, except I hate being revenge killed by Magnezone when I use anything not named Earthquake.

I don't understand Slowbro's popularity. It is never, ever effective when used against me, and it blew an equal amount of arse the day I tested it, too.

Maybe it's just my style of play or the pokemon that I prefer, but i just don't get why people use it. Fanboyism is the only reason that I can come up with.

Weavile. It screws me up constantly, but whenever I bring it in it seems to do just about nothing to the opposition.

Spiritomb both rarely does anything to give me trouble and turns out to be crap when I try it.

I've been swept by a kingdra before, but I always seem to be walled by SOMETHING when I use it.

I can't use walls very good... probably the closest thing to a wall I have ever had any success with is Celebi or Spiritomb.

With stuff like Cress, Uxie, Vaporeon and stuff... I just can't handle them! They are too offensively retarded, and, to be honest, relying on residual damage to get the job done isn't my idea of fun.

I love Spiritomb though... I ran Taunt/Shadow Ball/Hypnosis/Pain Split, and it's a beast. 68 SpA EVs and it always OHKOs Gengar and Azelf. Taunting Blissey switch-ins is fun too.

Another pokemon I have mastered is Mismagius... I've got that perfect prediction down where I Sub on the status, I Calm Mind, but their attack is too strong and breaks the sub anyway... then I sub again instead of Calm Minding, it works most of the time.

I sweep teams with her, it's fun!

DDmence is pretty cool too... once you get a feel of what you can survive, and what you can OHKO, it's a beast.

I've always struggled using Metagross. I used a Life Orb set, it just died on me. Same with Weezing. I liked him but I could never do anything right with him. Ever.

Yanmega annoys me.

I know the basic principles of it, if anything I mis-gage the speed boosts, as well as bug being a foreign attacking type for me.

Unfortunately for me... Baton pass, including Scizor.

I keep trying but I suck at realizing when to start getting set up.

I can't for the life of me use a Skarmory. It just seems like evyr team has a way to stop it from getting Spikes out. There's not much for it to safely switch in on in the first place, and he seems like an overcountered threat in general.

I take it he's great though.

Forget a specific pokemon, I have a hard time pulling off an entire strategy! My play style generally is leaning toward offensive, but I can't for the life of me get a good baton pass strategy going.

I've tried most things and the only one I've really felt I got somewhere with was rock polish gliscor, just because it could taunt phazers after it got it's speed boost.

I could never really use Celebi to counter Gyarados. Even Bulky one came out on top against me tbh. I just stuck with Vaporeon at that point :/.

All passing Pokemon with the exception of Vaporeon. I can't use Lucario, seriously. I've tried him in my main team, but I keep getting destroyed by faster Pokemon.
