Project Threats to OU Cores v2: Round 72: Mega Charizard X + Ash-Greninja

Status
Not open for further replies.
Highlights

Threat of the Round:

: Volcarona is arguably the most consistent defensive and offensive answer to this core.

Additional Notes:

: The spread's kinda bad but it can get the job done.

Round 55 Core: Tapu Lele + Tornadus-T

Tapu Lele @ Choice Specs
Ability: Psychic Surge
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Psychic
- Psyshock
- Moonblast
- Hidden Power [Fire]

Tornadus-Therian @ Flyinium Z
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 88 HP / 160 SpA / 8 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Hurricane
- U-turn
- Knock Off / Taunt
- Defog

  • Tapu Lele + Tornadus-T is a really good core that has seen pretty consistent usage throughout this SPL. Tornadus-T notably checks Pokemon like Kartana and Landorus-T, which will want to take revenge kill Tapu Lele. Additionally, Tornadus-T can cripple Steel-types like Magearna and Celesteela with Knock Off, while also drawing in passive Pokemon like Rotom-W which it can take advantage of with U-turn to bring Tapu Lele into play.
  • Try to post only OU viable Pokémon and don't post sets specifically for this core, additionally your threat should not be complete deadweight against teams that do not feature the core of Tapu Lele + Tornadus-T. Everyone have a good day!

Jirachi @ Leftovers
Ability: Serene Grace
EVs: 248 HP / 196 SpD / 64 Spe
Careful Nature
- Stealth Rock/U-Turn
- Wish
- Iron Head
- Protect

Jirachi can always switch into Lele when full, even when hazards are up.
Its access to reliable recovery in Wish+Protect make it an amazing answer for Lele even if it was Focus Blast.
Even with Leftovers Knocked Off its still capable of switching into Lele.
If Lele is locked into either of its stabs Jirachi takes next to nothing.

252 SpA Choice Specs Tapu Lele Hidden Power Fire vs. 248 HP / 196+ SpD Jirachi: 148-176 (36.7 - 43.6%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock, 1 layer of Spikes, and Leftovers recovery
252 SpA Choice Specs Tapu Lele Moonblast vs. 248 HP / 196+ SpD Jirachi: 88-104 (21.8 - 25.8%) -- possible 5HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
252 SpA Choice Specs Tapu Lele Psyshock vs. 248 HP / 0 Def Jirachi in Psychic Terrain: 73-87 (18.1 - 21.5%) -- possible 6HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

0 Atk Jirachi Iron Head vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Tapu Lele: 218-260 (77.3 - 92.1%) -- 31.3% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock

160 SpA Tornadus-Therian Supersonic Skystrike (185 BP) vs. 248 HP / 196+ SpD Jirachi: 93-111 (23 - 27.5%) -- possible 5HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
0- Atk Tornadus-Therian Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 248 HP / 0 Def Jirachi: 126-150 (31.2 - 37.2%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock
0 Atk Jirachi Iron Head vs. 88 HP / 0 Def Tornadus-Therian: 103-123 (32 - 38.3%) -- 3.9% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock

Reserving Weavile

164438

Weavile @ Choice Band
Ability: Pickpocket
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Knock Off
- Icicle Crash
- Ice Shard
- Pursuit

Weavile is a great check to both Tapu Lele and Tornadus-T as it is able to ohko the former with its powerful stab knock off and the latter with its super-effective secondary stab Icicle Crash.
Weavile is also able to trap a weakened Torn or a choice locked Lele with pursuit and deal lots of damage or eliminate them in the process. The great speed tier and its fantastic stabs makes Weavile a solid offensive check to both Lele and Torn.

Calcs:

252 Atk Choice Band Weavile Icicle Crash vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Tapu Lele: 250-295 (88.9 - 104.9%) -- 31.3% chance to OHKO
252 Atk Choice Band Weavile Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Tapu Lele: 285-336 (101.4 - 119.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 Atk Choice Band Weavile Pursuit vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Tapu Lele: 118-139 (41.9 - 49.4%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

252 Atk Choice Band Weavile Icicle Crash vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Tornadus-Therian: 474-560 (158 - 186.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 Atk Choice Band Weavile Ice Shard vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Tornadus-Therian: 224-266 (74.6 - 88.6%) -- 93.8% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock
252 Atk Choice Band Weavile Knock Off vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Tornadus-Therian: 181-214 (60.3 - 71.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock

reserving defensive Magearna

Magearna @ Leftovers
Ability: Soul-Heart
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
- Heart Swap
- Flash Cannon
- Volt Switch
- Pain Split

This set is viable only on stall archetype. It can replace the spot of Unaware pokemon thanks to Heart Swap. If you doubt about the viability of this set, see this wonderful explanation of Finch: https://www.smogon.com/forums/threa...on-was-a-mistake.3621042/page-26#post-7951166
252 SpA Choice Specs Tapu Lele Hidden Power Fire vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Magearna: 130-154 (35.7 - 42.3%) -- 91.5% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 SpA Tornadus-Therian Supersonic Skystrike (185 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Magearna: 88-104 (24.1 - 28.5%) -- possible 5HKO after Leftovers recovery

0 SpA Magearna Flash Cannon vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Tapu Lele: 192-228 (68.3 - 81.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
0 SpA Magearna Volt Switch vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Tornadus-Therian: 138-164 (46 - 54.6%) -- 58.2% chance to 2HKO

Magearna is a counter of Tornadus-T and checks Lele too. Obviously, this pokemon needs wish support to counter effectively both.

Reserving Sand Rush Excadrill

Excadrill @ Steelium Z
Ability: Sand Rush
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance
- Earthquake
- Iron Head
- Rapid Spin

Outspeeds and OHKOs both in sand. Torn will fall to a Corkscrew Crash, but because its moves are mostly resisted, you can repeatedly Iron Head it if, say, there’s a Tang in the back you want the Z for.

Celesteela @ Leftovers
Ability: Beast Boost
EVs: 248 HP / 28 Def / 232 SpD
Sassy Nature
- Leech Seed
- Protect
- Heavy Slam
- Flamethrower

Tapu Lele on Switch-In
  • 252 SpA Choice Specs Tapu Lele Hidden Power Fire vs. 248 HP / 232+ SpD Celesteela: 144-170 (36.2 - 42.8%) -- 96% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
    • This is the best Lele can do to you with the set given
    • Turn 2
  • 252 SpA Choice Specs Tapu Lele Hidden Power Fire vs. 248 HP / 232+ SpD Celesteela: 144-170 (36.2 - 42.8%) -- 96% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
    • Assuming worst case scenario of two max rolls, you'll be at 20% here thanks to Leftovers, so it's in your best interest to KO since you won't gain enough recovery
  • 0 Atk Celesteela Heavy Slam (120 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Tapu Lele: 330-390 (117.4 - 138.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO
Tornadus-Therian on Switch-In
  • 0- Atk Tornadus-Therian Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 248 HP / 28 Def Celesteela: 60-71 (15.1 - 17.8%) -- possible 6HKO
  • 252 SpA Tornadus-Therian Supersonic Skystrike (185 BP) vs. 248 HP / 232+ SpD Celesteela: 97-115 (24.4 - 28.9%) -- possible 5HKO after Leftovers recovery
  • 252 SpA Tornadus-Therian Hurricane vs. 248 HP / 232+ SpD Celesteela: 58-69 (14.6 - 17.3%) -- possible 9HKO after Leftovers recovery
    • Any of these options are fairly easy for Cele to pivot into, even if it dislikes being Knocked
    • Turn 2
  • 0 Atk Celesteela Heavy Slam (120 BP) vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Tornadus-Therian: 157-186 (52.3 - 62%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
    • While Leech Seed is 100% the correct play here, it's worth noting Celesteela can 2HKO, on the off chance you really want this thing dead
    • Also worth noting that Torn 100% clicks U-Turn or switches here, unless they really need to Defog

Heatran @ Leftovers
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 248 HP / 132 SpD / 128 Spe
Calm Nature
- Lava Plume
- Earth Power
- Stealth Rock
- Toxic

Heatran is an amazing if not the best switch-in to Tornadus-Therian, he is able to set up rocks for free and toxic it right after that. Heatran is maybe not the more fiable answer to Lele but it's still fine and he is able to switch-in on every move (not on 2 psyschocks + rocks) and toxic it also.

252 SpA Tornadus-Therian Hurricane vs. 248 HP / 132+ SpD Heatran: 61-72 (15.8 - 18.7%) -- possible 8HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 SpA Choice Specs Tapu Lele Psyshock vs. 248 HP / 0 Def Heatran in Psychic Terrain: 140-165 (36.3 - 42.8%) -- 96.2% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 SpA Choice Specs Tapu Lele Moonblast vs. 248 HP / 132+ SpD Heatran: 44-52 (11.4 - 13.5%) -- possibly the worst move ever
252 SpA Choice Specs Tapu Lele Psychic vs. 248 HP / 132+ SpD Heatran in Psychic Terrain: 126-149 (32.7 - 38.7%) -- 5.1% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

Highlights

Threat of the Round:

: Weavile is a creative submission that also works well in practice.

Additional Notes:

: The whole premise of the core is to break down Pokemon like this.

Round 56 Core: Kommo-o + Mega Alakazam

Kommo-o @ Kommonium Z
Ability: Bulletproof
EVs: 224 Atk / 32 SpA / 252 Spe
Hasty Nature
- Clanging Scales
- Close Combat
- Poison Jab
- Stealth Rock

Alakazam-Mega @ Alakazite
Ability: Magic Guard
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Psychic
- Focus Blast
- Recover
- Shadow Ball / Knock Off

  • Kommo-o has been explored a lot recently with its expansive movepool and all-around solid stats. This core's premise is very simple, Kommo-o can consistently pressure Steel-types like Ferrothorn and Celesteela, while Mega Alakazam punishes Toxapex.
  • Try to post only OU viable Pokémon and don't post sets specifically for this core, additionally your threat should not be complete deadweight against teams that do not feature the core of Kommo-o + Mega Alakazam. Everyone have a good day!

DD + 2 Attacks Mega Charizard-X

Charizard @ Charizardite X
Ability: Blaze
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Flare Blitz
- Dragon Claw
- Roost

Zard is able to outspeed and OHKO Kommo-o with Dragon claw. Zard also lives a hit from Zam and OHKOs it with Flare Blitz if its at full health. You can try to use D-Claw Against Zam, but it does have a chance to survive. Also, keep in mind that Zard will Faint from recoil damage from Blitz after it bops Zam.

Calcs V.S.
:

Mega-X Dragon Claw vs. 0 HP / 0- Def Kommo-o: 314-372 (107.9 - 127.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Calcs V.S.
:

252 SpA Alakazam-Mega Psychic vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Charizard-Mega-X: 211-249 (71 - 83.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 Atk Tough Claws Charizard-Mega-X Dragon Claw vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Alakazam-Mega: 240-283 (95.6 - 112.7%) -- 75% chance to OHKO

reserving the monster: Mega-Sableye

Sableye @ Sablenite
Ability: Prankster
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Def / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Knock Off
- Will-O-Wisp
- Recover
- Protect

0 Atk Sableye-Mega Knock Off vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Alakazam: 228-270 (90.8 - 107.5%) -- 43.8% chance to OHKO

252 SpA Alakazam Shadow Ball vs. 248 HP / 252+ SpD Sableye-Mega: 59-70 (19.4 - 23.1%) -- possible 5HKO
32 SpA Kommo-o Devastating Drake (185 BP) vs. 248 HP / 252+ SpD Sableye-Mega: 135-160 (44.5 - 52.8%) -- 23.8% chance to 2HKO
+1 32 SpA Kommo-o Clanging Scales vs. 248 HP / 252+ SpD Sableye-Mega: 120-142 (39.6 - 46.8%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
First of all, Kommo-o can't pose SR against him. Kommo-o can't 2HKO Sableye too and reciprocally he can burn him, what makes it almost useless. Finally, M-Alakazam without Dazzling Gleam is counter by Sableye.
Corollary, Mega-Sableye is an hard-counter to this core.

Magearna @ Fairium Z
Ability: Soul-Heart
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Shift Gear
- Calm Mind
- Fleur Cannon
- Focus Blast

Magearna can set up on Alakazam or stomach at most 1 Close Combat to get a Shift Gear off, then threatening both with a powerful Fleur Cannon / Twinkle Tackle.

Heatran @ Steelium Z

EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
- Magma Storm
- Flash Cannon
- Earth Power
- Stealth Rock / Taunt
I'm genuinely disappointed with myself that I missed that. That's why I gave myself my name everybody, to disappoint everyone. Alright, here's my back-up plan, Steelium Z Heatran. It's able to lure either Kommo-o or Alakazam-Mega and kill them with Corkshrew Crash. It also works with luring Gliscor, one of its best checks, and still functions as a stall-breaker/Stealth Rock setter, so it isn't useless outside of this matchup. While you can only use the Z-move once, you'll typically have other mons like Celesteela and Fairy-types to cover for whichever you didn't kill, so this still works to disable the core.

Reserving Payapa Berry Toxapex

Toxapex (M) @ Payapa Berry / Black Sludge
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 92 Def / 164 SpD
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Scald
- Mirror Coat
- Haze
- Recover
MFW Pokemon Calculator says it lives Psychic from Alakazam even without Payapa Berry. No really, it does from full health, though you're probably gonna be too weakened to continue staying in. Mirror Coat can prank the living hell out of an attacking Alakazam, or if they don't Psychic, it'll make them a little more weary of using it as a Toxapex answer, allowing you more leeway to dance around with your opponent. As expected, it'll wall Kommo-o without crits on the opposing side, even with the stat buffs from the Z-move.
165647

As an user of Mirror coat, you can choose Alomomola, but not Toxapex :(

Clefable @ Leftovers
Ability: Magic Guard
EVs: 252 HP / 224 Def / 32 SpD
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Moonblast
- Stealth Rock
- Soft-Boiled
- Thunder Wave

Clef usually ran Bold max defense in order to handle Zygarde but since that is gone it can afford to run a Calm nature.
With this spread it avoids the 2HKO from Timid M-Alakazam while still maintaining enough Defense to avoid the 2HKO from Kommo-o's Poison Jab and Jolly Lando-T's Earthquake
It has Thunder Wave to cripple switch-ins, particularly the aforementioned M-Zam.
On top of that, it blocks the Z move from Kommo-o.

252 SpA Alakazam-Mega Psychic vs. 252 HP / 36+ SpD Clefable: 177-208 (44.9 - 52.7%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

0 SpA Clefable Moonblast vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Alakazam-Mega: 94-112 (37.4 - 44.6%) -- 4.7% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock

224 Atk Kommo-o Poison Jab vs. 252 HP / 224 Def Clefable: 152-180 (38.5 - 45.6%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

reserve mega scizor

Scizor @ Scizorite
Ability: Light Metal
EVs: 248 HP / 244 Def / 16 SpD
Impish Nature
- Curse
- Bullet Punch
- Roost
- Knock Off

Mega Scizor is a solid check to both these mons because of its good typing in Bug and Steel which allows Mega Scizor to be defensively capable of taking hits from both these mons.
Mega Alakazam is physically defensive fragile so Mega Scizor is able to pick it off with 2 Bullet Punches unboosted;
Knock Off has a slight chance to OHKO Mega Zam ater Rocks dmg.
Mega Alakazams only attack which deals notable damage to Mega Scizor is Focus Blast, which is shaky in its accuracy.
Kommo-o STAB in Clanging Scales gets resist by Mega Sciz and the second STAB in Close Combat is neutralized by its Bug Typing, Mega Scizor can CURSE up infront of Kommo-o making it even more difficult for Kommo-o to deal with it.
Also Close Combats and Clanging Scales side effect in dropping the defensive by 1 Stage gives Mega Scizor the auto-advantage over Kommo-o in the long run.

Survives Psychic from M-Alakazam or ZScales from Kommo-o from full and beats them with Return and Quick Attack. M-Pinsir requires a free switch and fails to handle boosted Kommo-o, though.

Highlights

Threat of the Round:

: Magearna's really reliable against this core and the type of teams in general.

Additional Notes:

: Although Heatran can somewhat pressure this core in theory, Kommo-o and Mega Alakazam just put too much pressure on it to ever let it in for free, and even when it does, it can easily be punished the next turn. This submission won't be archived.

Ability: Protean
EVs: 168 Atk / 88 SpA / 252 Spe
Hasty Nature
- Low Kick
- Gunk Shot
- Ice Beam
- Spikes

Protean Greninja is a fantastic check to both Kartana and Tyranitar-Mega as it outpaces both of them and can ohko the former with ice beam or All Out Pummeling and the latter with a simple low kick.
Greninja also forces them to usually switch out and can hence set up a layer of spikes on the switch out. Overall Greninja is a solid check to both of these mons.

Greninja-Ash @ Choice Specs
Ability: Battle Bond
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Hydro Pump
- Dark Pulse
- Water Shuriken
- Spikes

Pretty simple here. Ash-Greninja can’t switch in to either member of the core, but it outspeeds and OHKOs both once it does get in. It can even lay Spikes as a fat grass (probably Bulu) comes in, weakening MegaTar and Kart for later.
