Thundurus-T Hail Offense ft. Arctozolt
by Fang

Hello everyone! This is Fang, back again with a really cool team I made a few weeks ago. Hail is really good right now, so I decided to hop on the Hail Hype Train. Arctozolt is very strong and has little to no switchins. It has STAB Boltbeam which is really good. And then I got an idea, I decided to make a Thundurus hail team mainly because it can destroy fat teams easily and gets an Ice Type weather ball to hit Grass and Ground types. And I did just that, with my friend Coolcodename!
=================================================
Teambuilding Process
=================================================

We started with Thundurus and Ninetales. As I said in the intro, I wanted to make a Thundurus hail. Ninetales sets up Hail which can make Thundurus' Weather Ball to turn into a 100BP Ice Type move to help against Ground and Grass types. Ninetales provide veil support to help Thundurus set up. Thundurus appreciates Ninetales' ability to check Weavile, and Thundurus can force a lot of steel types out with Nasty Plot and Focus Blast.

Arctozolt is a wallbreaker that greatly benefit from hail. Arctozolt can wreak havoc early game and end-game, making it a great pokemon overall. It appreciates Thundurus' ability to destroy Chople Magnezone, as Thundurus absorbs Thunderbolt, and resists Body Press/Flash Cannon while also making Magnezone a setup fodder. Thundurus appreciates Arctozolt's ability to help versus offensive teams, because Thundurus is kind of slow and doesn't like to 1v1 versus a faster Pokemon. On the contrary, Thundurus loves destroying fat teams that Arctozolt might struggle with, because Fatter teams can stall out hail turns and Thundurus don't rely on hail as much.

Tapu fini was chosen as the 4th Pokemon for the team because so far, we had a solid offensive core so we needed some more speed and a defensive backbone. Tapu fini was chosen for it’s ability to check dangerous threats such as Weavile, Urshifu, and Dragapult. It can also provide extra speed control for the team as it can run a bulky scarf set. It can also help defog away stealth rocks to help Ninetales set up hail easily.

Landorus-T was chosen for as the 5th Pokemon, as it can act as a good way around Zeraora and being able to deal with Heatran without fini having to be overpressured by it. It also is our main Stealth Rocker. It also helps us pivot around many physical threats which can otherwise be threatening to the team, such as Garchomp, non ice punch Dragonite and the previously mentioned Zeraora. It can also provide the team some offensive pressure via knock off by knocking off opposing leftovers and heavy duty boots in order to help out Arctozolt and Thundurus in the long run.

Scizor was chosen as the final Pokemon for this team, because at this point the team has a hard time beating the offensive threats of Kartana and Tapu lele. This is where Scizor comes in, being a solid answer to both of them. Although Scizor may not be the best to check both as it can be over pressured, it’s still a decent pick as it can pivot and provide some offensive potential via it’s swords dance antics. Scizor also works as a solid answer to Kyurem which can sometimes be a hassle to the team as it can be hard to switch into.

Set Description
=================================================

Thundurus-Therian @
Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Volt Absorb
EVs: 56 Def / 204 SpA / 248 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Nasty Plot
- Thunderbolt
- Weather Ball
- Focus Blast
This is the main Pokemon on this team. It has access to Weather Ball, so in hail it can threaten Ground-types which woul odtherwise wall it, as well as some Grass-types such as Tapu Bulu and Amoonguss. It also appreciates Aurora veil that was provided by Ninetales,since Thundurus is kind of frail and Aurora veil can help it setup. The EV spread allows Thundurus to live a +1 Dual Wingbeat from Dragonite, Bisharp's Knock-off under Aurora veil, and a Choice Band Kartana knock-off under aurora veil. It appreciates Arctozolt's ability to get rid of faster offensive Pokemons, giving it an opportunity to set up on a slower Pokemon. Once it sets up, it can sweep or soften up the opposing teams to let Arctozolt clean up. It also loves preying on stall teams, as not even Shedinja stall likes facing it after a boost because they’re main way around it; Shedinja, dies to hail chip. And Unaware Clefable doesn’t like switching in on a powerful thunderbolt.

Ninetales-Alola (F) @
Icy Rock
Ability: Snow Warning
EVs: 52 Def / 180 SpA / 24 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Aurora Veil
- Moonblast
- Freeze-Dry
- Hypnosis
Ninetales is a must on hail teams, being the best hail setter available in the current metagame. It has aurora veil to support Thundurus, as well as helping Arctzolt live some attacks in a pinch, as both of them have subpar bulk. It has Moonblast In order to hit Dragapult, Urshifu-Rapid-Strike, and Weavile hard as they can be very threatening to most teams, especially Dragapult and Urshifu, because they ignore Ninetales’s aurora veil via infiltrator and surging strikes respectively. It has Hypnosis as it’s final move as it can help Thundurus get in and start setting up on a Pokemon which is asleep. 52 defense allows Ninetales to live a +2 Triple Axel from Adamant Weavile at full health. 180 Sp.Atk allows Ninetales to OHKO Dragapult and urshifu with Moonblast after Stealth Rock chip and hail damage, as well as OHKOing Weavile after a little bit of chip. 24 Sp.Def lets Ninetales to be 3HKOED by a modest choice specs Kyurem's Freeze-dry and it has the side benefit of letting it live a Choice Specs Dragapult's Flamethrower. I got the spread from this post on Spread Compendium.

Arctozolt @
Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Slush Rush
EVs: 204 Atk / 76 SpA / 228 Spe
Naive Nature
- Substitute
- Bolt Beak
- Blizzard
- Low Kick
Arctozolt is a very threatening Pokemon under hail, as it outspeeds every unboosted Pokemon in the metagame and can tear apart most offensive teams with it’s near perfect STAB. This Arctozolt spread allows it to 2HKO Hippowdon with blizzard, OHKOing Dragapult after stealth rock chip, OHKOing Kartana, as well as doing quite a hearty amount to Buzzwole. The speed is used in order to outspeed most defensive Heatran. Thundurus helps Arctozolt vs more fat teams being able to set up on them and threaten a sweep. Thundurus also benefits from the fact that Arctozolt can tear apart more fast offensive teams, as Thundurus’ middling speed can be a problem when fighting a more offensive team.

Tapu Fini @
Choice Scarf
Ability: Misty Surge
EVs: 200 HP / 92 SpA / 216 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Surf
- Moonblast
- Trick
- Defog
Tapu fini is a key asset to the team. This set provides a lot of role compression for the team as it can Preform multiple important things in one slot.This Tapu fini set gives the team a reliable source of speed control and a way to keep many dangerous threats at bay such as Weavile, Urshifu, and Dragapult. The spread allows it to avoid getting 2hit koed by Urshifu's Close Combat. The special attack investment is to ohko Urshifu and Dragapult after rocks and the speed investment is to outspeed a +1 Dragonite.

Landorus-Therian @
Leftovers
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 HP / 16 Def / 152 SpD / 88 Spe
Impish Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Earthquake
- U-turn
- Knock Off
This is the standard Landorus set with it being the team’s main stealth rocker. The final move on it is knock off, because as I mentioned in the teambuilding process part it helps by knocking off leftovers and heavy duty boots on key Pokemon in order to prevent them from swapping into Arctozolt and Thundurus-therian multiple times, and to help pivot around different threats to the team while maintaining momentum via u-turn. This Landorous has enough speed to outspeed Adamant Bisharp while also outspeeding non offensive Heatran variants. 16 Defense with an impish nature allows Landorus to survive Choice Band Double Iron Bash from Melmetal, after Intimidate. The special defense is for multiple special attackers such as living a Draco Meteor from Choice Specs Dragapult, Tapu lele's Psychic, avoiding being 2hit koed by a specs Tapu koko Dazzling Gleam, and for some more special benchmarks.

Scizor @
Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Technician
EVs: 248 HP / 116 Def / 144 SpD
Impish Nature
- Bullet Punch
- U-turn
- Swords Dance
- Roost
Scizor has the standard set, but with u-turn in order to help pivot around common threats to the team. It has Swords Dance in order to provide some offensive pressure, while doing it’s job of pivoting around possible threats. Scizor is mainly used for checking offensive grass types and Tapu Lele, but this team must be careful around Kartana. Although, the combination of Scizor and Landorus can keep it at bay long enough for the offensive threats to get rolling and pressure the opposition. This Scizor spread has enough sp.def to live 2 psychics from Tapu lele, while also being able to live 2 kyurem ice beams after stealth rock (if boots have been knocked off). It also have enough defense to live 2 unboosted earthquakes from leftovers Garchomp, two Zeraora plasma fists after rocks, and enough to live a +2 Weavile knock off.
=================================================
Threatlist
=================================================

Kartana

Kartana can be a pain for this team to deal with. Although Scizor and Landorus can handle it to an extent, they can’t answer it long term only being able to keep it at bay and with some careful play by the player. Kartana can very easily tear apart a majority of this team. It can be revenge killed by Arctozolt but it can generally still prove a threat as they can come in later and pick off a Pokemon.

Bisharp

Bisharp is extremely difficult for this team to deal with, as it can generally come in for free on Scizor and set up. While Lando provides a way to soft check it, generally it isn’t too hard to chip lando in range to be oh koed by a +3 sucker punch. The best way to deal with bisharp on this team is to not allow it to set up and predicting around it with Arctozolt by using substitute.

Volcarona
Volcarona can be extremely annoying if it comes in after the team is chipped. After setting up once, it’s able to outspeed Arctozolt and cause some problems for the team. If Tapu fini and Landorus can sort of help with Volcarona, but if either of them are chipped by hazards or any other form of damage they can be put in to Psychic range.This Pokemon is easier to deal with than the other two listed above, as it can easily be crippled by Scarf from Fini. Not letting it set up in the first place is also a good way to prevent it from sweeping the team.

Opposing Weathers

While it is pretty rare to encounter opposing non-hail weathers, it is pretty frustrating to deal with. Pivotting with Landorus and Scizor is very important, as you can bring Ninetales and set up weather and then wreak havoc with Arctozolt as quick as possible. Thundurus also plays an important role in this matchup, as it can electricute Rain Teams and it doesn't rely on hail too much. Thundurus can also abuse opposing weathers to use different types of Weather Ball, for example if your up against Sun team you can use Fire type Weather ball to hit Venusaur. If you're up against opposing hail teams, Thundurus can hit ice weak pokemons with ice type Weather ball. The hardest matchup is usually against Sun and Hail teams, as sun teams can wreak havoc with their fire types. Sometimes Hail teams are just down to Arctozolt speed tie. Sand matchup can be a nuisance, but both Hippowdon and Tyranitar loses to Arctozolt. Rain is probably the least worrying, as Thundurus can spam Thunderbolt, and uses Water Type Weather Ball to hit Ground types like Seismitoad, while Ferrothorn dies to Focus Blast
Knock Off
Knock-Off can also be a problem for this team, but it isn’t the hardest to work around because it is not hard to prevent the opponent from repeatedly clicking knock off, and Scizor can generally absorb a knock off in a pinch.
