Too Close for Comfort - an OU Warstory by Spenstar

I was never really a newb, even when I started this, because I had followed the competitive battling scene through Serebii's Pokemon of the Week pages beforehand. A lot of my battles were amazing, but nothing comes close to this one. Here, I faced an opponent named Shinjackie.

My team:

Spenstar sent out Aerodactyl (lvl 100 Aerodactyl ?).
Shinjackie sent out Dragonite (lvl 100 Dragonite ?).
Aerodactyl is exerting its pressure!

My suicide lead, Aerodactyl, has been a reliable Stealth Rock set-up-er on my team. I start off with taunt because I figure that Dragonite will also want to set-up something. Instead, he goes for the offense, and I am REALLY glad his Stone Edge missed. So far I know that this Dragonite is offensive and knows Stone Edge. Pretty sure that Dragonite's rock attack will hit next time, I quickly have my Aerodactyl do its job.

I got my rocks up, way to go Aero. Those Rocks are gonna help me a lot throughout the battle. Dragonite's still sitting at 100%, so I decide to hurt him with Rock Slide (I close that over Stone Edge) before Aero dies.

I do not at all regret choosing Rock Slide over Stone Edge. Sure, Stone Edge might have OHKO'd, but it also could have missed, just like Dragonite's did on the first turn. However, I do regret using taunt on the first turn, because had I used Stealth Rock first instead, Rock Slide would have 2KO'd and Aerodactyl would be the survivor. I often mis-predict with that move. Anyway, Dragonite's within revenge kill range, so I send out my best revenge killer.

Spenstar switched in Scizor (lvl 100 Scizor ?).

Scizor, my Choice Banded revenge killer who could send Dragonite to the Netherlands with a STAB, Technician, Choice Band, Bullet Punch. I nick named him "Menace" for a reason.

That worked perfectly. Scizor took a bit of damage but got the job done. I guess Shinjackle predicted the use of Bullet Punch, which explains Extremespeed, but after this turn, I am puzzled. Why didn't Dragonite use Extremespeed to pick off my Aerodactyl? The world may never know.

Shinjackie switched in Infernape (lvl 100 Infernape ?).
Pointed stones dug into Infernape.
Infernape lost 12% of its health.

Infernape, the pokemon that could spell Scizor's doom. Predicting a fire move, I play conservativly and switch out to my physical tank, Rhyperior. I have no idea why they downgraded Rhyperior down to UU. He is fantastic, though he didn't see too much action on my OU team. I was considering dropping him from my team, actually. More on that later.

Spenstar switched in Rhyperior (lvl 100 Rhyperior ?).
Infernape used Swords Dance.
Infernape's attack was sharply raised.

Infernape: Ha ha! Fooled ya!
Rhyperior: Spenstar, calm down. Don't ragequit like you did last time. -_-'
Me: X_x

I got outsmarted by a chimp. More specifically, I got outsmarted by Shinjackle, but that's beside the point. Super-fast Infernape has set up a Swords Dance for a sweep, something Scizor could have stopped easily with two Bullet Punches. Ugh. On the plus side, I was comforted by my Rhyperior, a Rock-Ground type with base 130 Defense to survive an attack and base 140 Attack to OHKO with Earthquake. I click EQ, praying that Close Combat doesn't OHKO. If it does, I'm screwed.

Me: Who's laughing now? HA! HA! *imitates a chimp*
Rhyperior: God, you are so immature.

Apparently Infernape doesn't run Close Combat. Now, what was I saying a few turns ago about Rhyperior being amazing? Rhyperior's massive defense allowed what is essentally a base 160 attack (After STAB, Swords Dance, and super-effective multipliers while factoring in Solid Rock) with well over half of his HP left, and fight back with a powerful EQ that OHKO'd the poor chimp that thought it could sweep me. I sighed with relief, knowing full well that I dodged a bullet.

Shinjackie switched in Kingdra (lvl 100 Kingdra ?).
Pointed stones dug into Kingdra.
Kingdra lost 12% of its health.

I don'tknow much aboutKingdra, but I do know that it has a STAB that decimates Rhyperior. I didn't learn my lesson from the flaming chimp, so I swap out my Rhyperior for my Special Tank.

Spenstar switched in Bronzong (lvl 100 Bronzong).
437.png
100%

Most Bronzong that you see are designed to be Physical or Mixed walls, but mine tanks from the special end of the spectrum. The reason is twofold: one, goddamn Blissey epically fails at the position because of a rather shitty defense stat. Two, because I want that element of surprise with this guy. Prepared to take any water move that comes my way, I get...

Kingdra used Rain Dance.
Rain began to fall!

...fucked. Once again, I mis-predicted and Shinjackle took advantage of my conservative move to set-up a rain dance. I know that Kingdra's speed just doubled probably, so I'm wishing I still ran Gyro Ball. Instead, I have hypnosis. What follows is a very frustrating stallwar-ish thing, so bear with me.

Kingdra used Hydro Pump.

This is why I HATE hypnosis. It's annoying to use, and it's annoying when it's used against you. My attempts at shutting Kingra down ended in vain, and my dear Bronzong, a Special Wall, got KOed one-on-one by a Special Sweeper. Something's not right here. I'm thinking I need a new Special Wall... Anyway, dealing with Kingdra. I sent in my revenge killer, praying that Bullet Punch will OHKO.

That's what I get for wishful thinking. Scizor is dead and Kingdra is still sweepin'. Desperate, I send in my physical attacker, who I was also considering dropping. Let's see if I should or not.

So much for that. At this point, it's game over. Alakazam is KNOWN for its speed and it very much faster than Infernape, my final pokemon. Though, I know now that this Alakazam is neither choiced, Leftovers, nor Life Orbed, so I have to assume it's either Wisdom Glasses or Expert Belt. But that really doesn't matter now.

Spenstar switched in SkarmBliss (lvl 100 Infernape ?).
392.png

The reason why I'm not omitting the nickname here, for this one time, is to highlight how much I LOVE it. SkarmBliss is a common team pairing of two powerful defensive Pokemon. I used it as a nickname for a MixNape that could cream SkarmBliss. Irony and humor at its best.

Spenstar: gg

I say this because, I know, it's over for me. Alakazam outruns and OHKOs Infernape EASILY with psychic. I mindlessly select Close Combat and wait for the end...

SkarmBliss: Take that, brainy nerd!!
Me: You tell him!
Alakazam: T_T

Oh. My. God!! See folks, this is why you ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS run Timid with max Speed on your Alakazam. To keep Infernape here from humiliating you in battle. If your Alakazam is modest, I'LL FIND YOU. He he, just kidding. But still, that allowed Infernape to outrun and OHKO Alakazam with Close Combat! CritHax and Alakazam's low defense helped too here. Just... wow! But, this battle's not over! Okay SkarmBliss, time to kick some butt!

Spenstar: nevermind
Spenstar: lol

Shinjackie switched in Empoleon (lvl 100 Empoleon ?).
Pointed stones dug into Empoleon.
Empoleon lost 6% of its health.

IDK why, but this team seems to have trouble with Infernape here. Empoleon's dead, and the score's tied up. Bad news is, Infernape's defenses are both halved, and his HP is only 80% of what it was 2 turns ago. Basically, Either I OHKO his last pokemon, or I lose.

Shinjackie switched in Jolteon (lvl 100 Jolteon ?).
Pointed stones dug into Jolteon.
Jolteon lost 12% of its health.
jolteon.png

Oh snap. Jolteon's one of dem speed freaks, who boasts a STAB thunderbolt that will stab my weakened Infernape in the heart (pardon my pun) and win this guy the battle. I select earthquake and hope for a miracle...

And a miracle is what I got! Apparently Jolteon's best move against me was a NVE hidden power, which I personally find pathetic on a Jolteon. It did outrun me, but Infernape survived and easily defeated Jolteon with a powerful EQ. Hoorayz!! Great game Shinjackie!

Spenstar: gg

Time for props and slops!

Props:

  • Shinjackie, for being a great opponent

  • My Infernape for winning me the game!
  • My Rhyperior for KOing Shinjackie's Infernape before it could cause any real damage
  • My Electivire for KOing Kingdra before it could finish sweeping my team
  • Shinjackie's Kingdra for almost ruining me.
Slops:

  • Me, for GGing early
  • Shinjackie, for not saying a single word in chat during the whole battle. :(
  • My Bronzong, for getting beaten 1-on-1 by the very thing it's supposed to wall
  • Me, for over-predicting twice, allowing enemy sweepers to set up.
  • Shinjackie's Infernape, for not living up to its potential during this battle.
  • Shinjackie's Alakazam, for being outran and OHKO'd by my Infernape.
  • Shinjackie's Jolteon, for not having STAB Thunderbolt.
  • CritHax, for working in my favor throughout the battle.

Finally, I told you I'd reveal them, here they are, Shinjackie's team!

Thanks for reading! Don't forget to comment! =)

Was a sub-par battle between two sub-par players. However, your comments weren't bad and I'd like to see another attempt from you in the future.

Okay, sorry you guys felt that way. I thought it was a good battle... Golden Sun, Dragonite did have Extremespeed, it just didn't use it in that turn.

Why is alakazam not max speed? Please don't tell me he had HP evs? Jolteon with no t-bolt? close combat less infernape? No explosion on brongzong? way better than hypnosis imo

Pretty subpar battle imo. The log was okay but the uge empty text spaces kinda made me want to just fast forward (and I did). Commentary was ok but not the best. I couldn't keep up with the nicknames for future reference, change those back to the original pokemon, its easier for the readers. Alakazam in OU made me kinda cringe too. Not bad for a first log though, get rid of the big spaces next time, and change the nicks, a better battle would also do.

Oh boy. Empoleon, one of dem "bulky waters" could easily put en end to Infernape's sweep unless I OHKO will Close Combat. Well, here goes.

"lol"

Certainly some questionable moves from both sides, but it was pretty entertaining (I like most war stories!).

Taunting first turn was probably a mistake. Lead Dragonites are usually attackers who don't bother with set up moves. If he hadn't missed, he should have taken your Aerodactyl down without taking damage or letting you get rocks up.

The third Stone Edge is just baffling, enough to almost believe Dragonite was Choice Band. I can only assume he misclicked, or predicted a switch (though you'd usually go for Extremespeed anyway, just to be safe).

Infernape's Mach Punch is another odd move; he must just not have realised how Bulky Rhyperior was, and tried to avoid the Defence drops.

Sending Scizor in on Kingdra was obviously a mistake, as it resists BP and outspeeds other moves. He would have been useful against Alakazam, probably.

The crit with Close Combat was pretty lucky; I don't know if Alakazam would normally survive or not, as it resists the move... And Empoleon clearly doesn't carry Aqua Jet. Followed by Jolteon best move being NVE Hidden Power... Grass? Ice? Surely that's another misclick, or else he just doesn't know the type chart... Or thought he had HP Water...

I agree with this. If you find a better battle (although this one was still entertaining), it would be nice to see another Warstory from you. In fact, it is nice to see another Warstory period; I think people have made others feel too intimidated to post a Warstory, which annoys me because I like reading them.

What is up with the ridiculous amount of shitty warstories lately? I keep getting excited for no reason -_-

Don't get me wrong, your commentary was good. The battle, the teams and the actual gameplay was bad though. You should keep practicing and once you have a really good battle, try again.

Your opponent's team had several fatal flaws, and even then, he misplayed what he did have. No Extremespeed on your Aerodactyl's sash? No Close Combat on a SD Infernape? And no STAB on his Jolteon? Also, in the rain, Hydro Pump will do significantly more than Draco Meteor when both are neutral, specifically enough to guarantee a OHKO on Electivire.

Speaking of Electivire, nothing on your team draws electric attacks, so you get no benefit from Electivire's Motor Drive, the one thing that makes it somewhat useful.

I did like the comments, and it's clear you enjoyed the battle, but try to find one that showcases a bit more skill.

Edit: Alakazam might have survived a CC without the crit (81% - 95.2% on most variants), but it should never have come to that since it should be Timid to outspeed +1 Tyranitar and OHKO with Focus Blast. He clearly just took a set made for UU and threw it into OU for fun, based on the use of Energy Ball over Grass Knot.

Okay guys, that helps a bit. I just REALLY wanted to do a warstory, and this was my best battle so far.. I'll keep practicing.

Yeah, your comments definitely looked like they had some thought put into them, and your formatting wasn't complete ass, so I'd call this as a success as far as a sub-10 postcount warstory goes. Work on your battling skills and make another when you have a better battle!

I start off with taunt because I figure that Dragonite will also want to set-up something.

What is this I don't even..... I was ready to quit reading right here, but my friend insisted I read it all.

Terrible playing on both sides. I couldn't even begin to point out everything wrong with the battle.

However, your formatting was nice. Colour choices could be improved.

But terrible, terrible battle.

When Infernape Mach Punched slow, bulky Rhyperior I couldn't continue.
However, it's cool of you to write a warstory; I would never write one.

Your formatting was easy on the eyes and the writing was clear.
Hope you get some good battles to write about in the future!

Cheers.

This was a funny warstory lol. People probably mentioned all the flaws of both players so I shouldn't really say it. Your opponent could have won the battle easily if everything wasn't so messed up.

Was a sub-par battle between two sub-par players. However, your comments weren't bad and I'd like to see another attempt from you in the future.

Bulldogs summed up my thoughts pretty well. It honestly wasn't a very good battle, and after I read the first few turns, I'll admit that I even skipped some parts after I saw Aerodactyl Taunting against a Dragonite lead (who, for future reference, are almost always anti-leads and will attack immediately without attempting to set anything up).

Your comments were actually okay, however, so I suggest posting another warstory later once you become a bit more experienced :)

You know, if this was your closest battle, then I will like to know your CRE in Shoddy Battle. Only when you get a CRE of around 1300-1400 +, then you shall get close battles

Yeah When I saw Dragonite lead with stone edge and no extremespeeed I just stopped

I'm in the same boat, the fact that it used Espeed the turn after really showed me your opponent had no idea what he was doing (not to mention the fact you Taunted a lead Dragonite :/).
