What effect did Azumarill have on the metagame?
Azumarill has always existed as a powerful setup-sweeper, using a set with Belly Drum and priority Aqua Jet to sweep opponents. However, it initially faced several difficulties, such as opposing powerful attackers and Amoonguss, as well as finding room to setup in the offensive, fast-paced nature of the Doubles metagame. This changed as Heatran rose in popularity, leading to a fall in the popularity of Mega Charizard-Y as well - meta shifts that occurred after the (rigged) Skymin ban. Jirachi's increasing popularity, revitalized interest in a Knock Off > Play Rough set, and Heatran establishing its position as the premier fire-type all led to Azumarill becoming a dominant force in the metagame, as shown by its extremely good showing during SPL 7. Since, it has contributed to Volcanion's rise in popularity, as well as all-but-eliminating Full Trick Room as an archetype, aided by Gardevoir. Its current strong presence in the Doubles OU meta has led to a revival of Mega Charizard Y archetypes as well as a general avoidance of attackers that can't deal with Azumarill's Water+Fairy typing, such as Keldeo. Since its rise, there have been 2 suspect tests, one on Jirachi and one on Azumarill, both of which were caused by Azumarill's amazing synergy with Jirachi. Though the bunny remains free, it's definitely a tier 1 threat in ORAS Doubles.
In what main roles was Azumarill used?
Azumarill's main strength was its ability to punish a opponent for positioning. While it was initially built with a very hyper-offensive archetype, gradually more balanced archetypes won out for their ability to position around an opponent and compensate for Azumarill's inability to switch into hits. Azumarill functions as an excellent check to numerous top threats, such as LandoT, Heatran, Hydreigon, Keldeo, and Terrakion. It's flexible in working with numerous Megas as well as against or with Semiroom, and should be considered a major win-con for a team.
What caused it to have a significant impact?
Azumarill is strong mainly because of its amazing sweeping capabilities and its synergy with Jirachi, as well as its good defensive typing.
How do/did you deal with this Pokemon in Doubles?
Azumarill suffers against opponents that can keep up offensive pressure against it. Avoid giving Azumarill room to setup, and if it is setup, try to take advantage of its single-target nature. Strong checks include Amoonguss, Char Y, or Fairies such as Gardevoir or Sylveon. When teambuilding, its important to avoid including too many Pokemon that give Azumarill ample setup opportunities such as Keldeo or Hydreigon.
