[Overview]

Tornadus is one of the three "genies" of the 5th generation and is usually overlooked because of its inferior typing and movepool. However, when using Tornadus, it is important to utilize its strengths. Although it is almost completely outclassed by its Electric-Flying type counterpart, Thunderus, with the exception of having access to Hurricane, a 120 base power STAB Flying-type move with a 30% chance of inflicting confusion, Tornadus can wreak havoc with rain support. Pure Flying-type grants it good neutral STAB and a total of three weaknesses to the very common types of Electric, Rock, and Ice. Amazing offensive stats including an excellent 125 base Special Attack, a trolly 111 base Speed, and a decent 115 base Attack, allowing for a mixed set to be viable. In addition, it also has access to Focus Blast, giving it amazing coverage with powerful Flying- and Fighting-type moves. It also has a great ability in the form of Prankster which grants +1 priority to non-attacking moves such as Taunt and Substitute. Tornadus can make great use of its ability by having access to a priority Rain Dance, which allows it to quickly regain the weather if the opposing weather changer has been defeated. In addition, it can take away Excadrill's boost in speed as it means nothing to a move with priority.

Unfortunately, its less than stellar HP and defenses mean it won’t be taking strong priority attacks bar Mach Punch and Vacuum Wave, and even then, a +1 Mach Punch from Conkeldurr does upwards of 50%. Another downside to using Tornadus is that it has no useful boosting moves. The only viable boosting moves it has access to are limited to Agility and Bulk Up as compared to Thundurus' Nasty Plot and access to the same boosting moves. However, underestimate Tornadus at your own peril, as a Life Orb boosted Hurricane can 2HKO Ferrothorn and Forretress as well as Reuniclus, even with defensive investment.

Its pure Flying typing also grants it a good neutral STAB attack, albeit giving it weaknesses to common Electric-, Rock-, and Ice-type attacks. Torndaus's amazing offensive stats also allow it to run a mixed set with ease. Its ability, Prankster, is a massively useful tool to have, giving +1 priority to non-attacking moves such as Taunt. However, Tornadus is let down by its sub-par defensive stats, which means that it won't be taking any powerful priority attacks barring those it resists. It also has no boosting moves barring Bulk Up, which is a shame when considering its wonderful offensive stats. Still, underestimate Tornadus at your own peril, as a Life Orb- boosted Hurricane can hurt even the bulkiest of Pokemon.

(Whoa, don't write such massive Overviews. You don't need to go into detail about every single thing Tornadus can achieve. I have condensed it for this reason.)

[Set]
name: Rain Abuser
move 1: Hurricane
move 2: Hammer Arm
move 3: Rain Dance
move 4: Taunt / U-turn
item: Life Orb
ability: Prankster
nature: Naive
evs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe

[Set Comments]

This set takes advantage of the fact that Tornadus has access to a nice priority Rain Dance, and can wreak havoc with a perfectly accurate STAB Hurricane once the rain has been set up. Hurricane does insane amounts of damage to things that don't resist it, and even sometimes to Steel-types. It also has that handy 30% to confuse, which may cost the opponent despite its haxy chance dearly. Hammer Arm as the second move provides amazing type coverage, as well as OHKOing Tyranitar even without investment and with a lesser chance of missing than Focus Blast, which is an option over Hammer Arm. Rain Dance is present for obvious reasons, and can completely halt Sunny Day teams or Sandstorm teams.

[Additional Comments]

The preferred move in the last moveslot is Taunt, to prevent status and set up as it prevents status and setup; however, U-turn is a completely viable option to escape unwanted situations. Life Orb is also the item of choice as it provides a nice power boost to Tornadus's attacks. Leftovers can be used to increase survivability, but there is will be a significant decrease in power output the power of Tornadus's moves. The EV spread is very straightforward, with maximum investment in SpA and Spe stats Special Attack. A Naive nature is used to maximize damage from Hammer Arm, but no Attack investment is needed to OHKO Tyranitar. Hidden Power Ice is an option over Taunt / or U-turn, but is generally inferior since it does negligible damage even to super effective targets bar Garchomp and Gliscor.

Politoed with Drizzle is an excellent teammate to provide a 100% accurate Hurricane. Magnezone has good synergy with Tornadus, resisting its Electric-, Ice-, and Rock-type weaknesses, while Tornadus resists Fighting-type attacks and is immune to Ground-type moves. Forretress is a good candidate for setting up Toxic Spikes and other entry hazards as well as spinning away Stealth Rock which is quite detrimental to Tornadus's health, stripping 25% away each time it switches in.

[Set]
name: Mixed Attacker
move 1: Hurricane
move 2: Hammer Arm
move 3: Hidden Power Ice
move 4: Taunt / U-turn
item: Life Orb / Expert Belt
ability: Prankster
nature: Naive / Hasty
evs: 32 Atk / 224 SpA / 252 Spe

[Set Comments]

The Mixed Attacker set is similar to the Rain Abuser set with the exception of Hidden Power Ice over Rain Dance for more coverage against Garchomp and friends. Like As with the Rain Abuser set, Hammer Arm is recommended over Focus Blast for the its better accuracy and the more effective hit on Blissey and other special walls ability to 2HKO special walls such as Blissey. With the given EV spread, a Naive or Hasty nature, and in conjunction with Taunt, Tornadus completely destroys Blissey. Hammer Arm also allows Tornadus to OHKO all Tyranitar without Chople Berry, as Focus Blast is much too unreliable and can cause the game to end very quickly with an untimely miss. Hidden Power Ice is the best option for coverage, as Flying/Fighting already covers many things Hammer Arm Hammer Arm and Hurricane already cover many Pokemon.

[Additional Comments]

An Expert Belt is an option over Life Orb to possibly bluff a Choice item, but the power output from Life Orb's power boost is usually more important against non-supereffective neutral targets. U-turn can also be used to deal damage while scouting, but priority Taunt is excellent to stop faster threats from setting up and sweeping the rest of your team. Once again, rain support from Politoed aids Tornadus immensely, as it can fire powerful Hurricanes without any fear of missing.
(Mention Politoed since you use Hurricane)

[Other Options]

The boosting moves that Tornadus has access to are ridiculously useless, since Agility is pointless with Prankster and Tornadus's already fast high Speed stat, and Tornadus is much too frail and has poor typing to take advantage of Bulk Up, despite its 115 base Attack stat. Choice sets are possible, although but Choice Scarf is outclassed by Thundurus and Choice Specs is unreliable unless rain is up because of Hurricane's poor accuracy. An alternative Rain Dance support set as Rain support with Rain Dance / Taunt / U-turn / Hurricane and Damp Rock could be utilized with Prankster to help set up Swift Swim sweepers Swift Swim users such as Kingdra sweep, but Tornadus is still quite frail, even with defensive investment. Tailwind is also a viable option, as Prankster will usually make it go first and it can support the rest of the team grants it priority, allowing Tornadus to support slower teammates. However, it is usually an inferior option as Tailwind only lasts four turns.

[Checks and Counters]

Ironically, its counterpart Thundurus resists its STAB and Hammer Arm / Focus Blast and can hit it with a supereffective STAB Thunderbolt Ironically, Thundurus, Tornadus's genie counterpart, is one of its best checks, resisting both Hurricane and Focus Blast and KOing it with STAB Thunderbolt. Even Hidden Power Ice will usually not OHKO a Thundurus at full health unless Tornadus is equipped with Choice Specs. Zapdos also resists the Fighting / Flying combination two moves, and is also much bulkier than Thundurus while still having a powerful STAB Thunderbolt to maim Tornadus with. Blissey and Chansey with Eviolite counter any set lacking Hammer Arm, but must be wary of Taunt. Reuniclus takes little damage from any of Tornadus's moves bar a Life Orb-boosted Hurricane, and even then if Reuniclus has set up a few Calm Minds, there is little Tornadus can do to destroy it. Scarfed Pokemon that wield powerful attacks such as ScarfChomp and Scarfed Latios / Latias Scarf users such as Garchomp and Terrakion can easily revenge Tornadus with their powerful Outrage and Draco Meteors respectively STAB attacks.

[Dream World]

Tornadus receives the ability Defiant from the Dream World which raises its Attack stat sharply whenever another stat is forcibly lowered by the opponent. Overall, this is a decent ability, but is wasted on something like Tornadus which already has access to a much better ability in the form of Prankster which grants priority to non-attacking moves.

Issues:

 • "super effective" is two words, and not one.
 • Please don't leave spaces between words and the

tags. I have fixed this to the best of my knowledge, but please correct it if I have missed out anywhere.

the two sets should be merged. just slash hidden power ice with rain dance on the first set, and use the second set's ev spread of 32 Atk / 224 SpA / 252 Spe. other than that one move and the EV spread, there is literally nothing different between the two sets, so they should be merged to reduce clutter

I combined the sets and edited it with BMB's changes, however, I would like one more GP member to look at the combined write-up to make sure everything's all nice and perfect.

One more thing, the Checks and Counters section Tornadus having Focus Blast, but it actually has Hammer Arm (Focus Blast is an option, but the analysis mentions Hammer Arm more).

Since you combined two sets, there was some repetition in AC. Remember that Comments is only for main/slashed moves, which is why I switched around some mentions of Focus Blast.

GP 3/3.

I've come up with this set, but i'm not really sure if it works...
Tornadus@Focus Sash
Ability: Prankster
EV's: 252 Sp- Atk, 252 Speed
-Hurricane
-Whirlwind
-HP Ice
-Focus Blast
This thing becomes bloody useful if you have entry hazards set up. A timid nature will be good on this. As I said before, with spikes level 3, stealth rock and toxic spikes, tornadus can use its ability, prankster, and whirlwind to keep forcing the opponent to switch out. The pokemon which enters can take a lot of damage, so i think that it will be very useful. The other moves make tornadus a very powerful special attacker.

sand and rocks kill sash. he cant take a hit making whirlwind completly useless. hp ice is kind of useless as a whole. dont post sets you havent tested

I know QC axed the Specs set awhile back, but I would like to vouch for its inclusion. I've used it and have seen/faced other good players who used it successfully as well. A base 120 STAB move with a 30% confusion chance backed by Specs and Tornadus's stellar Special Attack stat is amazing, and Tornadus has great two-move coverage between Hurricane and Focus Blast. This set has very few completely safe switch-ins bar Jirachi and Bronzong, who, along with Tyranitar, can be taken advantage of with U-turn.

Set in question:

name: Choice Specs
move 1: Hurricane
move 2: Focus Blast
move 3: U-turn
move 4: Tailwind
item: Choice Specs
ability: Prankster
nature: Timid
evs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe

I used Tailwind as a filler in the last slot and found it moderately effective. There might be other, possibly better options (Air Slash / Rain Dance / Hidden Power), but I haven't tested any, as Tailwind proved to be the most useful for my team.

I can post logs if needed. iconig and Bloo should also comment on this because I know they used this set.

Also, Nachos's post seems to have been overlooked. I can attest to Tailwind's effectiveness on a Choice set, and it should be even better on a non-Choiced one.
