Umbreon [GP 2/2]

QC Approved [3/3]
GP Approved [2/2]

[Overview]

Although 5th generation didn't give Umbreon anything useful, Umbreon is still one of the best special walls in the UU tier. Umbreon has great defenses all around: a base 95 HP, 110 Defense, and 130 Special Defense. Umbreon also has access to useful support moves in Wish and Heal Bell to keep itself and its teammates in good shape. However, not all is good for Umbreon; it has a very poor movepool and can easily be set up on because of its weak attacks.

[Set]
name: Wish Support
move 1: Wish
move 2: Payback
move 3: Heal Bell
move 4: Protect / Toxic
item: Leftovers
nature: Careful
evs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD

[SET COMMENTS]

The combination of Wish and Heal Bell allows Umbreon to support itself and its team by healing them and curing them of any status ailments. Umbreon's high HP stat allows it to heal most teammates by 50% or more with Wish. Payback is for STAB and is what sets Umbreon apart from Chansey. Unlike Chansey, Umbreon can OHKO Mismagius—who would normally set up on Chansey—after Stealth Rock damage. Umbreon also has the ability to beat boosting special sweepers such as Azelf who can beat Chansey with Psyshock, which Umbreon, thanks to its Dark typing, is immune to. Payback will almost always hit with 100 Base Power thanks to Umbreon's low Speed. In the last moveslot, Protect allows Umbreon to scout for Pokemon who threaten it, such as Heracross, and allows Umbreon a free turn to heal itself with Wish. However, with Toxic, Umbreon can cripple bulky Pokemon it would otherwise have little chance of defeating, such as Milotic, Slowbro, and Zapdos.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

The given EVs and nature give Umbreon as much special bulk as possible. Yawn can be used along side Protect to make sure Umbreon can't be attacked until the foe falls asleep. This allows a teammate a free turn or two to set up. Umbreon also has access to another form of recovery in Moonlight. It can be used over Wish if you aren't worrying about healing any of your other teammates, and gives Umbreon an extra moveslot. Instead of Payback, Umbreon can use Pursuit or Dark Pulse. If Dark Pulse is chosen, use a Calm nature instead of Careful. Pursuit is mainly for Mismagius, and allows Umbreon to trap and KO it, althought outside of trapping Mismagius, it has little use and is very weak. Umbreon can also use Body Slam just for the chance of paralysis to support the team. Pokemon who would appreciate Wish and Heal Bell support while being able to take on Fighting- and Steel-types who threaten Umbreon make great partners. Donphan has a great Defense stat and can take hits from Fighting-types such as Cobalion and Heracross. Dusclops is immune to Fighting-type attacks and has access to Will-O-Wisp to burn foes, which gives Umbreon an easier time taking physical attacks. Hitmontop makes another great partner with its high Defense stat, Intimidate, and STAB Close Combat to hit opposing Steel-types super effectively.

[Other Options]

Umbreon has a terrible movepool and there are few other options it can use effectively. Umbreon can use a set consisting of Curse, Baton Pass, Wish, and Mean Look with the same EV spread and nature as the Wish support set. Use Mean Look on something that can't threaten Umbreon, then continue to set up on the foe with Curse, while healing Umbreon or the recipient with Wish. Once you have enough Curses under your belt, pass to an awaiting teammate. Instead of passing Curse to another teammate, Umbreon can use it for itself with Wish, Payback, Heal Bell, or Protect. Curse boosts its lower Defense stat, while its great Special Defense stat allows it to take special attacks well.

[Checks and Counters]

Fighting-types such as Heracross, Hitmontop, and Cobalion can easily come in on Umbreon and threaten with a STAB Close Combat, while Umbreon can do little back. Steel-types, such as Registeel, Bisharp, and Escavalier can come in on Umbreon with impunity. Registeel can threaten Umbreon with Toxic, Bisharp can hit Umbreon with a super effective Brick Break or set up on it, and Escavalier can hit Umbreon with a super effective Megahorn. Cobalion is Umbreon's biggest counter; it is immune to Toxic, has a 4x resistance to Payback, and has Justified to boost its Attack. Sets without Toxic can do little against bulky Pokemon with recovery such as Slowbro, Milotic, and Zapdos. However, they must be careful not to hit Umbreon with status, as Synchronize will cripple them back. Suicune and Snorlax can come in on Umbreon and set up on it, while Umbreon can do little back, especially if they carry Rest.

it feels like you switched AC and OO, lol. shouldn't curse sets be mentioned in OO?

mean look can't be BPed.

otherwise, looks good. not much to say.

Ooops switched parts of them around. >_<

I wasn't saying that the point of the set was to pass Mean Look. The point of the set is to Mean Look on something that can't threaten Umbreon, setup Curse, and then pass to a teamate.

ok this set is actually the best ive found for uumbreon

[SET]
name: MonoAttacker
move 1: Payback
move 2: Curse
move 3: Moonlight / Wish
move 4: Heal Bell
item: Leftovers
nature: Careful
evs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 Spd

you can use restalk over heal bell and moonlight. i use moonlight cause weather isnt that common but ya. other than that its somewhat explainitory.

also umbreon is a terrible wish passer with only 60 base hp, and is entirely outclassed by chansey.

edit: fuck i mixed up attack and hp 9.9 sorry but still i think this set should be at least added, obviously QC descision in the end

Umbreon has a base 95 HP... Which is 394 max (197 HP Wishes). That's basically 50%+ of the normal Pokemon which is a lot if you ask me. I'm not trying to be mean, but no shit Chansey outclasses Umbreon as a Wish Passer... Its HP is enormous.

I already mentioned a Curse set in OO. I personally feel it doesn't need a set for it because it's not really that good this generation. QC can weigh into that, though.

I did forget to mention Moonlight in this entire set though... Thanks. :)

I have to agree that I don't think cursing or mono-attacking is high on Umbreon's menu. Especially with all the phaze and haze craze going on with Baton Pass just barely neutered, and Shell Pass still on the loose. Just about anything with haze or phaze would lol at Umbreon, and the vast majority of teams have these moves in place in UU-- it's not happening.

Careful's fine

I think it would be nice to mention that another really important advantage Umbreon has over Chansey is the ability to check Azelf, mostly Nasty Plot (although CB U-Turn will hurt still, so watch out) without odd HP Fighting.

hi, just wanted to point this out. Good analysis!
When listing effectiveness of attacks, the number goes before the x (Earthquake is 2x super effective on Lucario. Ice Beam is 4x super effective on Salamence.).

I don't play OU, but Espeon's DW ability isn't released, so Umbreon's wouldn't be.

I thought that all the Eevelutions' Dream World abilities were released because of that game on the GL website?

edit: In fact, I'm ninety-nine percent sure they are all released. Espeon's OU analysis is full of mention of his DW ability, which wouldn't exist if it was unreleased.
