Underused Pokemon Matchmaking Phase 2 [Week 29 - Nasty Plot Infernape]

With 8 Votes, DaSpoofy is the winner! Kreme came in second with his nasty TR Pangoro combo.

Now onto this week's Pokemon. I decided for this week we would go with something that has been a mon I always have trouble building with because of its plethora of sets and how easy it is to fit on a team. That mon is...

salamence.gif

This dragon is a beast with its 600 BST as well as being S rank. Have fun and see you guys Friday! :)

Umbreon. :]

salamence.gif

Salamence @ Leftovers
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 248 HP / 236 Def / 24 Spe
Impish Nature
- Roost
- Dragon Claw
- Earthquake / Toxic
- Dragon Tail / Roar / Defog

umbreon.gif

Umbreon @ Leftovers
Ability: Synchronize
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
- Wish
- Protect / Moonlight
- Heal Bell
- Foul Play

Defensive Salamence and Specially Defensive Umbreon make a pretty solid core for more defensively minded teams. FatMence is an exceptional and decently bulky, especially on the physical side thanks to Intimidate. Umbreon is an excellent partner for a number of reasons. First, Umbreon can wear down walls such as Porygon-2 and non Substitute Cresselia with Toxic. Umbreon also has no problem taking on Pokemon such as Mega Sceptile and Mega Abomasnow. Umbreon also provides useful cleric and Wish support that this Salamence appreciates. In return, Salamence checks powerful Fighting types such as Mienshao and Machamp, while also phazing Pokemon that want to use Umbreon as setup fodder.

Salamence @ Lum Berry
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpA / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Outrage
- Earthquake
- Fire Blast

Salamence is by far the God Dragon in UU. It can do so much that it's actually terrifying. Of course, there's some things it shouldn't or doesn't really want to do. Boosting for one. But the idea behind this set is simply a cleaner set, meant to get to +1 and blow through the opposition. Now, Moxie would normally be a better idea, to make it unstoppable after a kill or two, but I opted for Intimidate to help support Florges and to be able to shrug off physical hits better from things like scarfers. Fire Blast, however, was something picked not for coverage, but because most of the things that would hardstop Mence die a painful death at the hands of any special attack. Lum Berry is just there to stop the Outrage from killing you in confusion.

Florges @ Leftovers
Ability: Flower Veil
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpA
Bold Nature
- Calm Mind
- Moonblast
- Synthesis
- Aromatherapy

Florges is an underrated mon in an offensive role. 112 Special Attack is nothing to scoff at in any case, especially not when backed with a scary good support movepool. Being able to take advantage of Intimidate from Mence and recover off other damage is awesome, and being able to get rid of Status for an entire team is just as good. But remember that argument about why Florges moved up? It's because of the Calm Mind set, which makes this a terror to take down after boosting to even +1 or +2. Being able to punch holes through physical walls or boost on them for pretty much free is also a great idea, since Aromatherapy can be used to get rid of Status they would inflict. Obvious Lefties recovery is Obvious.

These two mons, together, love rocks and spike support. They aren't exactly covered by any one thing, so there's going to be switches, and if you play smart, a lot of them. This is meant to be a combo to tear down walls, punch holes in offensive mons, then curbstomp the rest into the dust with Mence. A nice teammate could be Doublade, as it stops things from spinning away, or Cobalion as a utility set with Taunt and Stealth Rock on it.

These two, I've noticed, also really don't like rocks of their own, or spikes. Florges can heal itself, but Mence can't, so be careful with that. Otherwise, the rest of the team is up to you, since this can fit on almost any balanced and offensive-ish team.

Well, now that I'm not funny, let's take this seriously

Salamence @ Life Orb
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Draco Meteor
- Fire Blast
- Defog
- Roost

Cobalion @ Lum Berry
Ability: Justified
EVs: 36 HP / 252 Atk / 220 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Close Combat
- Iron Head
- Taunt

Special Defog Mence (credit to Christ0 the gr8) takes on Mienshao, Entei (not minding burn), Lucario, and (with proper playing) Gatr, while Taunt Cob takes on Sharpedo, Mega Bee, Mega Aero, Snorlax and Florges. Leaves room for a great fast sweeper who would appreciate natural bulk and utility.

EDIT: I got rid of the tf2 thing because it wasn't funny. Now it's just straight to the point
I have this duo on a team, so I'll look for the replay

- Fire Blast
- Roost
- Defog

What's up guys, so this is a really cool core I've built around a ton as of late, showcasing Fat Duck and a Special Defog Dragon. These 2 actually have some really nice synergy, P2 being able to take any special attacks such as opposing Draco Meteors or Ice Beams and Salamence being able to come in on any Fighting-Types or potential Knock Off users that threaten the duck. Of course its threatened by the likes of Snorlax or CM Florges and some others but that's what the other 4 slots are for :^)

Salamence @ Lum Berry
Ability: Moxie
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Outrage
- Earthquake
- Iron Tail

Abomasnow @ Abomasite
Ability: Soundproof
EVs: 56 HP / 144 Atk / 252 SpA / 56 Spe
Mild Nature
-Blizzard
-Giga Drain
-Ice Shard
-Focus Blast

Mixed AoA M-Abomasnow is an excellent wallbreaker because of its immensely powerful Blizzards. The idea of the core is to spam Blizzards early with Aboma while luring in fat steels that bother this DD Mence set, such as Forretress, Aggron, and Doublade. Furthermore, Focus Blast is added to smack P2 and Umby, two of Mence's best counters. The EVs on Aboma let you live a Stoise Aura Sphere, creep Doublade and then some, and maximize Shard's power (doesn't guarantee OHKO on Mence w/o rocks :[). Late game, when the team is ready to be swept by Mence, you can lure in a choiced Fire or Fighting type such as Entei, Shao, Heracross, Darmanitan, Ape (not usually choiced though) etc and forced them to lock into a STAB. Use that mon as setup fodder for Mence, click Outrage, and win. The achilles heel to this core, however, is rocks and rock type moves. This means if, let's say, ScarfShao clicks Stone Edge, you are in a bit of trouble. This is obviously alleviated by a set up sweeper that resists Rocks, like Lucario or Cobalion, and obviously a hazard remover is mandatory.

UU, I present you a fun yet effective dueto,
I introduce you,

salamence.png
Salamence and Krookodile
553.png

This is actually a pretty common bulky offensive core found over ladder and tours and I will tell you why: any combination of sets works great with those two! It all depends on your teams necessity!

Salamence and Krookodile have similar bulk (95/80/80 and 95/80/70) and they excell against physical attackers thanks to one crucial ability: Intimidate. Intimidate spam is completely annoying to face, and since Ground/Flying types usually covers itself weakness, you can keep spaming intimidate (and hope you are not being too obvious at some point) until it is safe to keep one of them in field. Sally helps Krook in his fighting weakness, while Krookodile helps all the team providing a volt switch in, something that any serious team should have. Once you get to a point where is safe to keep one of them in field (and that's not hard at all), you start aiding your own team with some wallbreaking or support utility. Both Sally and Krook also have a great, colorful movepool to chose your sets from. Depending on your team, you can definitely use any kind of combination with those two.

Do you need offensive presence while providing some kind of support? What about Taunt Rocks Krookodile and Defog Mence?

Krookodile @ Dread Plate/Earth Plate
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Earthquake
- Knock Off
- Taunt

Salamence @ Life Orb
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Draco Meteor
- Fire Blast
- Roost
- Defog

Or maybe some dumb wallbreaking capabilities, like Band Krook and Mix LO Mence, to ensure an ez late game for other sweeper/cleaner?

Salamence @ Life Orb
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- Outrage/Roost
- Fire Blast
- Earthquake
- Draco Meteor

Krookodile @ Choice Band
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Knock Off
- Pursuit
- Earthquake
- Superpower/Iron Tail

Heck, why supporting someone else sweep when Salamence can support a Krookodile sweep or vice versa since they both also have Moxie as an ability? They can even lure each other counters, like Florges or Tangrowth! Oml! These guys are unstopable!

Well tbh you always have to account for things, but they are extremely good together and can help most of offensive archetypes and even some balance builds. I'm not a stall player but heck why not? If someone try it they could even work, I guess.

They both enjoy steel types partners (also something every team should have) and screams for a special sponge, since they really doesnt like to stay in against special attackers, altho they can survive most neutral hits and even live some SE ones!

Salamence is a mon that I find incredibly silly and it should b... oops, wrong thread, my bad. Alright:

Salamence @ Life Orb
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature

moltres.gif

Moltres @ Life Orb
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 29 HP / 0 Atk
- Will-O-Wisp
- Hurricane
- Roost
- Fire Blast

Moltres has the ability to scorch every salamence check in existence. Mons like mega abomasnow, mamoswine, forretress, defensive florges (calm mind is tricky to deal with but can be pressured), whimsicott, bulky grass types, every single steel type and pretty much everything else that could give salamence trouble. Then salamence take huge advantage of that since it can sweep teams easy after moltres has done its job. LO ddance salamence cause Im real (and I have like 2 scald absorbers on x team, fck scald).

Do A Bibarel You have timid on that dragon dance salamence of yours. Should be jolly.

empoleon.png

Empoleon @ Shuca Berry
Ability: Torrent
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Hydro Pump
- Ice Beam
- Grass Knot
- Agility

This duo seeks to basically surprise your opponent and wallbreak the shit out of their team so that Empoleon can set up and win easily. For example, common switch ins to Salamence that beat Agility Empoleon include things like Porygon, Snorlax, Florges, Suicune to an extent, Milotic, Umbreon, etc. Moxie Choice Band Salamence lures in these things expecting to take not so much damage to pretty much die instantly when an Outrage smacks them in the face. Porygon2 is especially susceptible since it no longer traces Intimidate which is the main reason it counters most Salamence so reliably. Ideally, after you wallbreak, something like Scarf Hydreigon or Chandelure will revenge kill you, providing an easy sweep for Empoleon. This core is fun despite me having no good team surrounding it!

Salamence (M) @ Lum Berry

- Iron Tail
- Fire Blast / Earthquake

Aggron (M) @ Aggronite
Ability: Sturdy
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Heavy Slam
- Aqua Tail
- Thunder Wave
- Stealth Rock

I don't know how this hasn't been picked yet. Salamence is a strong set-up sweeper with relatively low defensive and Mega Aggron is arguably the best offensive tank in the tier. This is a match made in heaven.

I'm using a Dragon Dancing Salamence set with Lum Berry. I used Moxie so if it gets a kill, it will rack up it's already large offensive stats. Outrage is the for obvious stab, but you can also run Dragon Claw in case he has a fairy switch-in and in that case you can change the item to a Life Orb or even a Yache Berry if you want to get creative. I ran Iron Tail to kill Florges, Rock Types, and Ice Types that Mence may have trouble with. Fire Blast is for coverage to hit dedicated physical walls and Steel Types, but you can also run Earthquake to hit Steel Types, Rock Types, and some other pokemon too.

To partner with Salamence is a standard tank Mega Aggron set. I ran Sturdy so it cannot be OHKO'ed on the switch in by a strong water, ground, or fighting type move. Heavy Slam is a good stab that does a lot of damage, especially to things significantly lighter than it. Aqua Tail is to hit Fire and Ground types that it is weak to. Thunder Wave is good for slowing the game down for both Aggron and Salamence. Stealth Rocks are good overall and will cause peripheral damage to the opponents pokemon unless his spins or defogs the rocks away.

i hope i get a vote this time... :[
