Underused Pokemon Matchmaking Phase 2 [Week 29 - Nasty Plot Infernape]

With 5 votes, Cactrune becomes the third member to join the HoF! Congratulations :)

Onto this week's mon. This week I decided to go with the 3rd most used Pokemon in all of UnderUsed according to November's usage stats. I am talking about...

florges.gif

This little flower is always a staple on most teams in UU and as such explains it being used so much. I hope we get a lot of submissions as this mon has a lot of usage so there must be a lot of partners right? lol

P.S. DROPS ARE OFF LIMITS UNTIL WEEK 30 OF MATCHMAKING AND CRAWDAUNT CAN ONLY BE POSTED IF IT STAYS IN UNDERUSED!!!

Sorry this took so long NV, school was brutal.

Anyhow lets get to the core. These two comprise one of my most favourite pairs ever. They synergise pretty fantastically: M-Pert has absolutely no trouble absorbing Fire-, Poison- and Steel-type attacks (especially with the curse set). In addition to this the fact that its so heavily invested in spdef means it can take on Pokemon like Nidoqueen that threaten Florges. In return Florges can get rid of Pert's sleep which is one of the biggest pains when it comes to the rest set. It can also keep it healthy throughout the match via Wish. Florges is also able to help vs stronger special attackers like mega blastoise . Naturally this core has trouble with stuff like Rose / Amoon so steel types or mons like crobat make for good partners.

Florges @ Leftovers
Ability: Flower Veil
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD | 252 HP / 232 Def / 24 SpD
Bold Nature / Calm Nature
- Wish
- Protect
- Moonblast
- Aromatherapy

Swampert @ Swampertite
Ability: Damp
EVs: 240 HP / 16 Def / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Curse
- Rest
- Earthquake
- Ice Punch

Aggron @ Aggronite
Ability: Sturdy
EVs: 252 HP / 16 Def / 240 SpD
Impish Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Roar / Toxic / Thunder Wave
- Heavy Slam
- Earthquake

Mega Aggron and Florges form an extremely durable defensive core that many an attacker fail to break through. Florges preforms fantastically in the role of taking repeated hits from common physical attackers such as Mienshao, Heracross, and Krookodile, while also providing nice Wish support. In return, Mega Aggron takes on special attackers relatively well, while also filling the role of a status spreader with Toxic or Thunder Wave.

- Stealth Rock
- Pursuit

So far, the candidates put forth as matches for Florges approach things from a defensive perspective. Mega Aggron, Suicune, Swampert, or most other bulky Steel or Water-types synergize well with the flower fairy. However, I decided to look at a Pokemon that supports what is, in my opinion, Florges's premier set right now: Calm Mind. Krookodile, with its great STAB coverage and access to a number of helpful moves, is skilled at harassing the Special Walls, Fire-types, Steel-types, and Poison-types that are commonly used to check Florges. In turn. Florges can shield Krookodile from the Fighting-type attacks that target it.

Both of these 'mons have a lot of support options that they can use to pressure opposing teams, and they work well together. Good partners include Crobat, Jellicent, and Zapdos, all of which can round out some of this core's weaknesses.

Florges (F) @ Leftovers
Ability: Flower Veil
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk

- Aromatherapy

Forretress @ Leftovers
Ability: Sturdy
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Def
Relaxed Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Gyro Ball
- Spikes
- Volt Switch
- Rapid Spin

Simple yet effective core that's used on more defensively inclined teams. Florges is an incredibly strong bulky win condition in the metagame despite the new drop of Metagross due to its good typing both defensively and offensively. Most people know what CM Florges is capable of so I'll leave it at that and move on to its partner, Forretress. Forretress helps cover some of Florges's weaknesses by having a resistance to Steel and a Poison-immunity. Forretress is also able to set Spikes which helps Florges immensely when it attempts to sweep. This isn't a one-way deal, however, as quite a few of Forretress's shortcomings are mitigated by having Florges as a partner. Some of which are access to Aromatherapy which rids Forretress of any status conditions, and having an amazing natural Special Defense which makes up for Forretress's subpar SpD. These two are often a decent opener for defensively inclined teams and good partners to them include the likes of Swampert, Jellicent, Rhyperior, and Umbreon among others.

Chesnaught @ Leftovers
Ability: Bulletproof
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Impish Nature
- Spikes
- Synthesis
- Drain Punch
- Leech Seed

Similarly to Kreme's core, this is a defensive core with a solid plan for winning games: use Spikes to wear down Florge's checks, such as Steel-types and Poison-types, then sweep. Chesnaught is efficient at setting spikes in this combination because it switches into some of Florges checks quite comfortably, such as Cobalion, Doublade, and Mega Swampert. In return, Florges beats the special attackers that trouble Chesnaught, such as Hydreigon, special Salamence, Ice Beam Mega Blastoise, and Zapdos. I went with the Calm Florges spread here to better compliment Chesnaught's physical bulk as well as lure Nidoqueen (Calm Mind as it switches in and you can beat it 1v1) since it's such a large threat to this core. Another cool way this team interacts defensively is by covering Dragon-types really well; Calm Florges is a solid Kyurem, Hydreigon, and special Salamence check, while Chesnaught beats physical Salamence. Mixed Dragons are tough to handle but that's the case for most defensive cores.

This pairing appreciates support for Fire-types, Fighting-types (Florges and Ches can both check some of these but they don't cover all of them), Beedrill, and Mamoswine, as well as Stealth Rock, Rapid Spin, and spinblocking support. Thus, Water-types, Steel-types, and Poison-types, like Swampert, Doublade, Forretress, Tentacruel, Nidoqueen, and Jellicent, are good partners for this core.

Reserving Suicune

soz about time fellas final exams ;d

Florges @ Leftovers
Ability: Flower Veil
EVs: 240 HP / 252 Def / 16 SpD
Calm Nature
- Moonblast
- Wish
- Protect
- Aromatherapy

Suicune @ Leftovers
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 240 HP / 252 Def / 16 Spe
Bold Nature
- Scald
- Calm Mind/Sleep Talk
- Roar
- Rest

Ok so this is a defensive core with sweep potential on CM Roar Cune. Suicune is this marvelous wall we all know about, able to switch in most of the meta and either roar them out, setup on them or just spam Scald the most broken move ever. I'm suggesting CM Roar because it setup and beat almost every CM user in this meta, but Roar Talk isnt bad neither. CM have problems setuping on Reuniclus after +1, but it can come in and roar them out with no problemo.

CM Roar problem is that, whenever you need to rest, you can't give your opp 2-3 free turns to abuse. That's where Florges comes in. With cleric support, Florges is able to heal any Suicune status and also wish support your entire team along with all the defensive support it can add.

This core is a great abuser of the infamous fairy-steel-water core that molds balance nowadays, and can put some serious work against most matchups.

Florges + not Venusaur

toxicroak.gif

I didn't bother using my eyes, so new core.

Toxicroak @ Life Orb
Ability: Dry Skin
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance
- Gunk Shot
- Drain Punch
- Sucker Punch

Florges @ Leftovers
Ability: Flower Veil
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
- Wish
- Toxic
- Moonblast
- Aromatherapy

Toxicroak is an underrated titan of the metagame, with immunity to Scald and Toxic, a healing option in Drain Punch as well as Priority in Sucker Punch and a base 120 STAB option, after one SD, it can punch holes in teams, or clean-up late game. However, Croak is paper-thin (about to croak hueh-hueh-hueh) so Wish-passes from a bulky titan such as Florges is helpful, as well as Florges' ability to take on Hydreigon, Mence, and stall in Toxic. The pair matches up nicely against balance, stall and some BO, though the last one gets tricky.

Decided I would use this week's matchup to see what people thought of Curse-Saur
Florges @ Leftovers
Ability: Flower Veil
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
- Calm Mind
- Moonblast
- Wish
- Aromatherapy

Venusaur @ Yache Berry
Ability: Overgrow
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Atk / 8 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Power Whip
- Earthquake
- Curse
- Synthesis
Florges is a special Tank, and with CM, it can set up and proceed to wreck teams with the coveted Fairy Typing, falling only to Steel-Types, the rare Physical Poison Type, and Strong Fire-Types. Curse-Saur is an idea I had in XYOU, using Mega-saur's obnoxious bulk to set-up more bulk and take down the Special Walls sent in to check it. It half-worked in OU, but suffered from T-Flame destroying Venusaur regardless of set, as well as the rise of Mega-Medicham, and Mega-Gallade. In a tier of more Water-types than prominent Psychic-Types, Venusaur has less to worry about, and that may grant him a turn or two of set-up. With Curse-Lax, Curse-Mega-Swampert and even Curse-MAggron, I figured Venusaur has a shot. Now, it loses a decent amount of bulk, as well as Thick Fat, but after a turn or two of set-up, it can hit a lot of prominent threats like Krook (even banded), Mamo (but be careful of this monster), MAggron, Gatr, Sharpedo, Crawdaunt (lunch), Jellicent, Mega Blastoise and Suicune and net OHKOs on all of them (minus MAggron)
With Florges to keep him healthy, Venusaur is a prominent lure-wallbreaker.
Warning-- watch for Entei, Salamence, Heracross and Psychic Types, no matter how few.

252+ Atk Choice Band Krookodile Earthquake vs. +1 248 HP / 0 Def Venusaur: 195-231 (53.7 - 63.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
244 Atk Life Orb Mamoswine Icicle Crash vs. +1 248 HP / 0 Def Venusaur: 283-335 (77.9 - 92.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252+ Atk Strong Jaw Mega Sharpedo Ice Fang vs. +1 248 HP / 0 Def Venusaur: 192-226 (52.8 - 62.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ SpA Mega Blastoise Ice Beam vs. 248 HP / 8 SpD Venusaur: 220-260 (60.6 - 71.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

P.S. DROPS ARE OFF LIMITS UNTIL WEEK 30 OF MATCHMAKING AND CRAWDAUNT CAN ONLY BE POSTED IF IT STAYS IN UNDERUSED!!!

You are welcome to pick a different partner, Eeyore. :)

And with 3 votes, malinowski clinches his first victory in UU Matchmaking! Congratulations and hopefully many more wins to come!

This week, I am going to tie in with next week by doing something special. I am going to do the non-Mega version of a mon this week, followed by the Mega of said mon next week. That's right...I am talking about the one viable mon that has a Mega, but doesn't have to be a Mega to be viable in UU.

swampert.gif

Non-Mega Swampert is such an effective Stealth Rock setter and physical wall, but it does have its flaws. Have fun and see you guys Friday! :)

Florges @ Leftovers
Ability: Flower Veil
EVs: 252 HP / 232 Def / 24 SpD
Calm Nature

pretty simple core. Swampert takes hits from things like Entei, Doublade, Metagross etc. while Florges' job is to wall things like Shaymin, Heliolisk, and other 'weak' special attackers. Florges keeps Swampert healthy with Aromatherapy + Wish, pretty straight forward.
