The main goal of this thread is to archive teams that do an exemplary job showcasing certain playstyles / archetypes that are prominent in the current metagame. This can help beginner and intermediate level players get acclimated to the metagame and just be a general tool to those in need of teams.

I'm going to be actively looking for teams to archive and I'm going to actively be filtering out teams that are no longer as effective as they used to be. I'll be consulting a variety of people when making these decisions to ensure high quality teams are added.

Finally, if you would like a less selective, but larger in quantity supply of teams posted by members of the OU community, feel free to check out the OU Bazaar.

This archive needs a team with bulky SD Tapu Bulu as a part of its backbone, seeing as that set has exploded in usage lately and has proven itself to be an excellent glue for many teams. I'll post a team with it that exemplifies this archetype for an example, but feel free to use one of your own if you can find a better one. Bulu + Pex is an example of one of the backbones that works naturally with this core.

This is just a standard SD Bulu team made around the currently potent Mega Alakazam. BulupexTorn is just a natural construction, and the rest of the team forms around that defensive core.

How does this team handle kyurem-b? Serious question or is that not a thing? The person who made this team or used it extensively should answer seeing as tour teams a lot of times these days are designed for a specific opponent and not exactly ease of use or general metagame coverage. I guess you can dance around but if someone new to current OU plans on using this some pointers about problems should be mentioned. It took me about 10 seconds to figure that out so im sure the builder knows more

The thing about this metagame is that you can't have surefire answers to everything, so a lot of teams have to end up settling for situational outs against them and Kyu-B is a good example of that against this team. Oh yeah also that team wasn't made by Eternam, I mixed up the builders and can't remember who originally made it, so I'm gonna defend it myself.

Technically this team "loses" to Kyu-B because of the lack of surefire defensive answers, but it's far from an unwinnable matchup. Looking at this team, Megazam + Focus Blast Torn can threaten out Kyu-B and do heavy damage to it and fat Bulu can SD as Kyu-B comes in and eat an Ice Beam to KO back with Superpower. On top of that it's frankly hard pressed to switch into anything but Gliscor because Toxapex threatens to burn it and the rest of the team has moves that threaten to blow it off the screen like Inferno Overdrive from Heatran. Z-Move Kyurem-Black paired with Tapu Koko is obviously a difficult matchup and required you to predict around it, but the team honestly isn't THAT poor against the mon.

Sample teams are meant to be indicative of teams that flourish in the current metagame and this one exemplifies the bulky SD Tapu Bulu balance/bulky offense archetype very well. Also ftr Kyurem-B is threatening to an insane amount of teams at the moment and is difficult to deal with because of its access to Z-moves, so a lot of the time you're better off packing offensive pressure against it than trying to come up with hard counters.

Hello, could you add descriptions to the team (written if possible by the builder) please? I find the lack of description curious, since you can't properly understand the teambuilding plan unless you are already a good player. Besides, some teams include weird sets or spreads, so it would be nice to know why the builder chose it.

Some questions that could be answered this way are: what is the goal of TDKs landorus's spread, eternam+sorry's gliscor's spread ; why grassiumZ heatran in TDKs balance, why metronome greninja without spikes ; what is the mixed spread of ABRs AV tangrowth for? These are sample teams including not standard spreads and sets, so I think it is important to explain all of this.

Answering these questions can be done very simply in a description. In addition, I am sure such a description will help a lot beginners who want to try using the team, by telling them: what's the gameplan, how do mons synergize together and how do the spread/sets help achieving the goal more easily?

I already said this to Leo and seemingly pissed off esteemed user FiNCHINATOR about this but I was politely asked to move this directly to here. Anyways, I feel that there should sample teams featuring magearna/koko/mzor/ash gren/zygarde/kart/etc not necessarily all of those in 1 but it would be useful to showcase that part of the meta too since such a big part of the metagame is matchup based BECAUSE of the amount of threats that are prominent, which a fair amount of the bigger ones especially kart and koko don't appear in the thread that is supposed to help newer players learn what kinds of teams are used. Of course, there is the Screens team, but I don't think that virtually any of the sets on that team are used outside of screens, and therefore is not enough to showcase the amount of threats that are in the game right now. I have come up with 2 teams that include many of the most prominent threats in the current metagame that were not already featured. Enjoy :)

already discussed on discord but basically we had already decided on a sd bulu team prior to this post so there’s no real point in adding it, thanks regardless!

i see where you’re coming from with this and while we don’t typically do this in samples (we as the ou forum, i know other forums have been doing this for a while) i can try and ask around for descriptions, thanks for the suggestion!

i dont necessarily disagree with you and the points you bring up but if i was to add those kinda offenses id have to ask around cause your teams dont quite convince me. dont take this personally ofc im just not fond of an av gears offense with mew and pex and no removal outside of scarf kart. the fact that av gears is the only tbolt switchin with no reliable removal and wish support is also concerning. i think this type of av gears teams are also on the decline so it wouldnt make much sense to include such a team if it wasnt an exemplar and accomplished build. the second team has a questionable heatran matchup with 2 steels that bait it easily, with the jirachi not even packing u-turn to pivot out of it. other than that it has basically no ash gren counterplay so im not including it, thanks for the suggestions nonetheless and we’ll take them into consideration for the future

thats it, thanks all for the feedback here and in pms

Hi, well let’s get straight to the point! Trick Room! Having played these two variations extensively I think they deserve a spot in the sample thread, especially for those people who like me do not like to play balance and want to keep our teams offensive but viable. Honestly I don’t think there’s a stronger or more viable version of HO than TR in the common meta, it significantly reduces the poor mu that HO teams find themselves with and is the king of dunking on stall teams.

Now you may be thinking Bulu on TR!? Ewwww!! But on this particular team not only does bulu serve as an excellent switch in to the prominent dark types like ttar and ash gren, but with an adamant nature, sd and meadow plate it is a ridiculously strong breaker that can work in/out of TR, it also supports mage/mmaw/alola wak through recovery n eq reduction, 220hp for maximum grassy terrain recovery. However this version of TR can struggle with hard hitting fire types, the most prominent threats being Zard/heatran/victini/volc it of course has an answer in alola wak but users should be weary of the coverage moves these threats have when considering hard swapping in alola wak.

The second sample mitigates this fire weakness through the combination of bdrum azu and alola-wak. Azu also mitigates TR’s common weakness to dark types and is ev’d to be able to survive attacks like zapdos discharge, mvenu giga drain, sludge bomb (roll) after a bdrum. Mega Heracross is a surprise inclusion over Mega Mawile in this team but it puts in as much work if not more than mmaw if I’m honest. It’s typing gives u great offensive and defensive utility with what it can successfully switch into. Skill link deals well with any pests that what to try n sub stall tr, it’s stabs are almost unresisted in the meta with rock blast cleaning up anything that does. With or without an SD up this mon will run through teams, it’s ridiculously strong.

The common mons between the two teams I believe need little explanation if any but for the sake of full disclosure I’ll explain the move choices.

Uxie: a lot of people prefer magic coat over u-turn on this set but in the current meta I find u-turn to be much more useful, it’s inclusion eases the mu vs sash drill leads, gren leads and the slightly rare but still relevant hoopa-u. The idea is to trick room up vs these and then forgo clicking memento and press u-turn for the chip or the ko in hoopa’s case as it will consistently fall after a hyperspace fury def drop, leaving uxie alive also offers potential momentum later in the match as you’ll have a free mon to sac.

Alola-Marowak: I get a lot of questions about this set so I should definitely clarify this. Sub is preferred over sd as I find more often than not ppl will switch from this mon, especially if u memento into it. From behind the sub you effectively gain one extra turn outside of tr (assuming sub stays up) to hit whatever mon your opponent may send out before you have to retreat/sac. Bone Marang features on both teams to once again ease the mu vs sash drill leads who can be annoying to both teams. It also isn’t subject to tapu bulus grassy terrain.

Magearna: standard otr mage, people may prefer focus blast over aura sphere, personally I find on both teams that as a late game sweeper all mage tends to need is tbolt n z fleur to do its job.

Cress: standard TR cress, really nothing to mention here, the analysis already says it all.

I’ve probably missed a few solid points about these teams but please feel free to ask any questions. The teams are free for you to use and hopefully they make it into the official samples :)

Hey, here's a team i feel could be a decent choice for samples, This archive could use a solid Mega-Scizor build, as its a very solid mega & choice at the moment being a Top 5-3 Mega imo. This team utilities Curse Mega Scizor, a great option which has been rising lately and has a really good match-up with all the cheese infesting the ladder during OLT, (as its OLT at the time i am posting this) This is a Volt-Turn Team with powerful breakers such as Banded Zygarde & Steelium-Z Heatran which can break down balance teams which are also very common at the moment.

This team has been by far my favorite to use during olt. I made it myself and I think it's actually very solid and it accurately represents the meta right now with things like curse scizor, grassium z tran and sd gliscor. The zygarde + scizor is a tride and true core with zygarde being able to take care of things like tran and celesteela that would otherwise bother scizor. This is my favorite zygarde set right now, it has great longevity especially when paired with grassy terrain and it kind of beats a lot of balance teams by itself. If you toxic a bulu on the switch in, you can actually beat it one v one, especially if you already have a sub up. This scizor might be my favorite mega right now. Right as I thought scizor was falling out of the meta, curse scizor gets born and is absolutely amazing. Once you clear the opposing team's toxapex or celesteela or ferrothorn this scizor just goes in and can clean up games. U turn is also great because it gives you momentum and allows you to switch out of things that would threaten you. This mon also when paired with zygarde pretty much beats hyper offense by itself. Grassium z tran plus bulu is great as it helps to beat ground types and water types that this team doesn't like that much. Bulu also gives this team a good ash gren switch in and koko switch in, the two things that threaten this team the most. Gliscor and zapdos are good all utility glue mons that just help out with typing balancing and help improving the team's matchups in general against many different teams.

I don't want to criticize the teams posted above, just poiting at something that I think is very important:

Ash-greninja's usage has dropped a lot and protean gren is the go-to greninja to use now (at least during OLT), since people are overprepping for ashgren and spamming Spdef bulu, spdef pex and such. So using tapubulu as the only greninja check is a very bad idea atm, which is worrying actually because only spdef pex/gastrodon/AV mag/chansey can switch into protean gren (depends on the Z move: extrasensory/lowkick/hydropump?). So the teams posted above, notably Ske mask's sandstorm and paoisd's tripleZ are extremely weak to protean gren (icebeam+hydropump kill all the mons), and therefore can't be metagame representative, since protean gren is quite meta defining atm.

In both of those Bulu/Scizor/Heatran teams, Curse Scizor is the Protean Gren check - it's just a bit shaky if you don't know which Gren they're running yet. If they don't bring HP Fire (few do), then Curse M-Scizor can switch in more or less freely on Low Kick, Hydro Pump, Ice Beam, Gunk Shot, Z-Dig, etc. Hydro Pump obviously does a bunch, but M-Scizor can scout and Roost it off if it needs to, as Hydro only does ~45% to a mega'd Scizor. It's definitely a shortcoming of Paoisd's team because of how slow everything is, but Ske Mask has Lando and Koko to revenge Protean Ninja if it gets a surprise kill on Bulu/Sciz.

hidden power fire is by no means rare on protean greninja. the second team literally loses to standard waterium gren(the best greninja set)- hydro pump gunk shot spikes hidden power fire. even if the waterium gren does not have hidden power fire, it can kill scizor by hydro pump followed by its z move. im not trying to completely bash up on the second team, but it has no speed control which is by no means representative of the metagame rn. lack of speed makes many breakers insanely annoying, a great example of this being earth power kb zone and other threats to the team can easily auto win. the first team is really solid outside of its weaknesses to steelz tran and protean greninja imo.

Hello all. Not many of you know me but the few who do are most likely aware that im a big fan of the Hyper Offense playstyle, especially since its OLT at the time of writing this, so i decided to post a team made by my friend Xtra$hine which helped me reach high 1800s during cycle 1 of OLT V. I feel this team is a very solid example of HO in this meta with 2 of the best sweepers in the tier, being Zygarde and Magearna, with double sash leads for hazard stacking. The largest selling point in my opinion is the fact that Mega Gyarados and Blacephalon are capable of beating stall if played correctly and that is invaluable for such playstyles

ok thats enough on this matter, I’ve received some pretty convincing proof that xtra did build that team a while ago and he’s the one I’m gonna credit when I update this after OLT qual phase, if you disagree then feel free to PM either of the hosts, preferably Finchinator, but stop arguing here because it’s derailing the thread. thanks
