Hey PU, I'm Yogi 2xTheTap. The thread has changed hands again, but in this iteration, there's a slightly different set of rules below that you should read through before posting.

If you're having trouble building a team around something, this is the place to post. A few other established PU players and I will be putting our teambuilding capabilities to good use and will be building teams around specific movesets and/or cores at your request. We'll then post the team, a description of our teambuilding process, and a few replays, which will all detail how the team works in depth. This thread's primary aim is providing newer players with an entry point to the tier, and hopefully by watching us play and learning how we build, we'll be able to teach new users some of the basics so that their builds improve in turn.

Joining the teambuilding lab:

If you would like to join the teambuilding lab, simply send me a message either here on Smogon or on Discord. I'll then have you build one of the requested teams on a trial basis, and if everything looks good, you'll be added as an approved builder and will be set to post in the thread going forward. We'll generally try to limit the number of builders for the thread though, as 'too many cooks can spoil the broth.' E: Tryouts are closed currently due to high builder to request ratio - I will reopen this if/when there is an influx of new requests.

Rules for requesting teams:
  • Post a one paragraph description with the moveset / core you want us to build around and a slight idea of what kind of team you want the end result to be (ex. Stall with specially defensive Articuno or Hyper Offense with an offensive core of Normalium Z Lilligant and LO Jynx). Keep in mind that there may be a more optimal set than the one you requested, so the final product will be subject to change at the builder's discretion.
  • Requests for Pokemon ranked low in terms of their viability, i.e. C+ rank and below, will be low priority (to see what will be considered low priority, please consult our viability rankings thread).
  • Requests for totally unviable Pokemon will denied (ex. Luvdisc or Castform).
  • Please refrain from requesting teams built around Pokemon new to the tier right after they've dropped; just like you, the builders probably have not gotten a chance to use the new drop yet, so please wait a minimum of 2 weeks before making these requests.
  • Please note that we can choose to ignore requests for Pokemon that have had teams built with them recently.
  • Each user is allowed one request per every two weeks, and posts with users making more than their allotted requests will be ignored and these users may be subsequently disallowed from requesting teams from the thread in the future.
  • Please remember that these teams are not guaranteed to be without weaknesses - all good teams still have a few. Edit them as you please.
  • On that note, you are free (and encouraged) to suggest changes to posted teams that you feel improve them.
  • You are not allowed to post your own teams here to have us modify them. We're here to build new teams, not modify older ones. If you want your own teams critiqued and modified, post them in the RMT forum instead.
Rules for building teams:
  • To ensure that the requests are built within a reasonable timeframe, please first post a rough draft in our Discord Teambuilding Lab channel via a PokePaste. If you've received no feedback after one week, please assume the team is okay to post.
  • To ensure quality, please be mindful of the feedback you receive and do not post the team if it needs a significant overhaul.
  • Please update our running spreadsheet after you've built the team by marking the request as complete.
  • Post replays with your finished team - doing so will inform how you build, and it's important to ensure these teams are functional in practice, so that the requester is happy with the final result.
  • If you've been inactive for a noticeable period of time, your meta knowledge will most likely become outdated, and you'll be removed from the list of approved builders.

I really suck at teambuilding so I hope you guys can help me a little bit. I want a team built around Z-Celebrate NP A-Raichu, which is lowkey one of the best setup sweepers in the tier. The team also should have an reliable Skuntank check, because I hate to stall out 8 Suckers with my Raichu. Also the team should be rather balanced or bulky offense.

Raichu-Alola @ Normalium Z
Ability: Surge Surfer
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Thunderbolt/Psyshock/Focus Blast
- Thunderbolt/Psyshock/Focus Blast

Thank you in advance!

A team with this Pinsir set. It seems quite interesting and I want to try to use Pinsir:

Pinsir @ Normalium Z
Ability: Moxie
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe

Exeggutor-Alola @ Dragonium Z

EVs: 248 HP / 8 Def / 252 SpA
Quiet Nature
IVs: 0 Atk / 0 Spe
- Draco Meteor
- Energy Ball / Leaf Storm
- Flamethrower
- Trick Room

I am absolute garbage at teambuilding, but love this thing as a wallbreaker/cleaner. Don't want a team that's focused around TR, because I feel TR as a team archetype is gimmicky and inconsistent. Would prefer for the team to be balanced, but I'm cool with something more offensive, just not HO. Mostly want something that breaks with/for Eggy and can also make use of TR if Eggy succumbs to priority before it cleans up.

Sup dude, here is the Crabominable team you requested. Funny enough I wanted to test Crabominable outside of Trick Room and it didn't dissappoint one bit. Ice Hammer/Close Combat/Earthquake coverage hits roughly the entire metagame neutrally. Last spot was a bit of a toss-up. Pursuit is here to do catch something that doesn't wanna stay in although other moves like Ice Punch or even Facade is other options too. You requested VoltTurn to pair with Crab and Mesprit + Eelektross was a solid combination here. Originally Eelektross was a Lanturn, but was feeling a bit weak to Archeops so Eelektross was a better check as it isn't weak to EQ and Mesprit provides rocks and momentum. From here, I wanted to pair Crab with something that appreciated it breaking down Steels and Grass-types with its dual STAB, so Normalium Z Hyper Beam Lilligant was added as a solid win condition and can just straight sweep teams after a boost. Next thing that was added was a backup response to stuff like Archeops and Primeape, so Weezing was added. Weezing is pretty standard, but I replaced Will-O-Wisp with T-Bolt to get the drop on Qwilfish thinking it can wall the standard mono Sludge Bomb set as well as 2HKOing Archeops as well. Lastly some speed was needed so Scarf Mr. Mime was added not only to be a revenge killer, but it helps asnothing else freely switches in on Drampa. Since T-Bolt is on Weezing, you can go back to Lanturn if you wish (AV Lanturn to keep the fire check), but Eelektross also helps with Ferroseed, Carracosta, Gastrodon as well as opposing Lanturn. Enjoy the team!

also tested the team in a tour and ending up winning the whole thing:

Haunter @ Choice Specs
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Sludge Bomb
- Thunderbolt
- Shadow Ball
- Energy Ball

16053-Alolan-Persian.png

Persian-Alola @ Leftovers (or whatever seems most fitting to the team)
Ability: Fur Coat
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Parting Shot
- Foul Play
- Toxic
- Taunt

I'm not all too good at teambuilding, but there are two Pokemon that I've just been really intrigued in using. Haunter was imagined in my head as a late-game sweeper or a powerful mon to switch in on mons that are heavily threatened by Haunter, and hit whatever switches in HARD. Persian-Alola is just a mon that seems great as a pivot to weaken the opposing side and wear down things.

As a side note, you can change these sets however you may want, but I'd prefer Haunter to stay more or less the same except nature or a few EVs, as it's what I'm used to. I'd also like Persian's moves to stay the same and to more or less keep the same role.

Apologies for the gigantic images, I'm new and have no clue how to change it.

Ability: Iron Barbs
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Def

I'm definitely not the best when it comes to putting LC/NFE Pokemon on my team. But I made a Ferroseed set that will be on a team!

This was a lot of fun for me since I tend to avoid offense builds and haven't used Me-First Pinsir before, but I think i've found my favorite build.

I found Pinsir a good partner in specs Mesprit, who acts as a reliable switch in to Weezing who walls Pinsir and also helps pressure physical walls, mainly Ferroseed, to help facilitate a moxie sweep late game. I found that me-first Pinsir works best with hazard stacking support, so I used a core of Qwilfish and Ferroseed. Qwilfish functions as the team's main fighting check since Pinsir struggles to chip Gurdurr and Mesprit can't switch in on a knock off. I opted for a faster set with waterfall to give the team another out of Magmortar, with thunder wave over toxic spikes to help cripple Swanna who tries to defog and to support the overall slow nature of the Pinsir Mesprit core. Ferroseed gave the team a reliable answer to Swanna and physical Skuntank and takes advantage of physical walls which switch in on Pinsir such as Regirock and Carracosta. The next step was speed control which ended up being Primeape, helping to deter defoggers whilst also giving the team a reliable offensive check to Lilligant. Since hazards were so crucial to my Pinsir strategy I wanted a spin blocker, and Dusknoir was the best option since the strong priority in shadow sneak helped compensate for how slow the team is otherwise, most importantly giving me a reliable Jynx check since Primeape only forces a speed tie after z-lovely kiss.

The team went through a lot of changes through testing. I experimented with Regirock but it opened the team up to Swanna which I really disliked, so I decided to stay with Qwilfish Ferroseed and accepted the fact that i'd be a bit Pyroar weak. The team lacks hazard removal so I experimented with assault vest Hitmonchan over Dusknoir to help with the fire weakness, but it just stacked up a bigger weakness to Sableye which Dusknoir helped with by tricking it. It also left the team without a spin blocker, which I disliked.

I forgot to save replays when testing, but I used it in a couple of room tours and managed to win 2. This version felt the most fluid so I hope it's sufficient enough.

Persian-Alola + Haunter is a fun core to build around, due to the interesting synergy. I changed Haunter's set to Life Orb because I think Specs is not great in this meta, since it doesn't offer much counterplay vs Skuntank and being locked in can be dangerous vs pokemon like Drampa and Pyroar as well. Energy Ball was chosen as the last move on Haunter since the team ended up being weak to Gastrodon and Lanturn, but it can be swapped out for Destiny Bond.

I quickly decided that I wanted to pair this core with Guts Flame Orb Ursaring, the strongest wallbreaker in PU, because Persian-Alola's Parting Shot gives it plenty of opportunities to come in and destroy things. It can also heal Ursaring to full health after its worn down taking chip damage from burn and stuff like Rocky Helmet. Between Persian, Haunter, and Ursaring, the team could beat down any defensive team, but it is quite lacking in the department of taking hits. That made fitting the last three pokemon on the team very difficult. I had to go in an offensive direction, because there was no way I had enough defensive pokemon left to cover to be able to use more slower, passive pokemon without problems. But I still needed to check some important threats, like Archeops and Pyroar. Bulky Mesprit was chosen as the Stealth Rock setter. It makes me more weak to Skuntank, but is my best way of checking Fighting-types and other Physical attackers in one slot while not losing momentum. I found Kabutops to be a good fit as well, as it offers me a Fire-resist (although I have to predict perfectl), and strong priority, as well as a possible Rapid Spin if I need it. On the first version of the team, Scarf Primeape was chosen as the cleaner. It is a very reliable mon for cleaning late-game, and it can U-turn out to Ursaring if the team has bulky pokemon it cannot do anything against. It also pairs very well with Haunter, since pokemon like Mesprit, Weezing, and Qwilfish are bait for Haunter. On the second version of the team, I swapped out Scarf Primeape with Assault Vest Hitmonchan, since I felt like I was missing a bit of special bulk, and changed Kabutops to the Choice Scarf user.

This team is far from perfect. Like most offensive teams, it is impossible to pack a proper check or counter to a lot of strong threats. For example, this team is quite weak to Swanna, Skuntank, and Lanturn. However, which aggressive plays and applying offensive pressure, it is possible to win almost any matchup. Hope you have fun with this!

Kill the Lights I finished your team! The Trick Room Dragonium Z Eggy A set is a great offense breaker as its decent bulk and typing lets it come in on a lot of mons, setup TR and nuke something with Devastating Drake. I first added Metang as its a great defensive partner for Eggy-A. Metang can easily come in on passive fairies like Clefairy and Togetic that wall Eggy-A and setup rocks as well as take ice type moves for Eggy-A. Meteor Mash is the main STAB that hits the Ice and Fairy types its supposed to check and hits Mesprit for neutral damage. Earthquake hits Skuntank and fire types but is also good neutral coverage in general. Toxic is used to beat Musharna 1v1 which would otherwise destroy this team. Eelektross was the next partner that can help sponge special hits for mons that could give this core a lot of trouble like Waters with Ice type coverage, special Skuntank, and birds like Archeops, Swanna, and Oricorio. Eelektross also helps break down special walls like Type: Null via Knock Off that can full stop Eggy from breaking anything. I then added Swanna and Fast Utility Qwilfish to deal with fighting types and to an extent fire types. Swanna gives me a good speed tier for revenging things so I don't have to rely on Jynx as much and lets me Defog if I really need to. Qwilfish is the primary fighting check and gives me spikes support. Max Speed is used to revenge Magmortar, outspeed Defog Skuntank and Taunt it, and speed tie with other Qwilfish.I chose Jynx as my Scarfer to revenge +1 Lilligant and +2 Carracosta specifically.

The team plays pretty well but has a few weaknesses you should be aware of while using it. No Dark resist means things like Absol and Banded Skuntank are a bit scary but Qwilfish can always Intimidate them and a few things on the team can live Knock and/or Sucker if necessary. The bulky setup normal types like Type: Null and Munchlax can be quite threatening as they both turn Metang into setup fodder. The best way to beat these is continually pressure them with Knock Off Eelektross, Taunt Qwilfish + Spikes, and Trick on Jynx.

Hope you enjoy the team I had fun building it!

Looking for an offense team around these two fast mons. I feel I play better with offense than with any other playstyle and Raichu and Floatzel are some of the premier mons on it. Sets can be changed around as I'm not too picky. Can be Z-Celebrate Raichu with physical Floatzel, Specs+Z-Bulk Up, or some other combination of sets if you find it fits the team better. At this point, I'm trying to make a turn around to be less serious and have more fun with mons than I have been so feel free to take some creative liberties with the team if you so choose.

Cofaiclus So I took your nom before dibs accidentally made a team which sorta hit 2 birds with 1 stone but this is the team I've been messing around with that was built for your nom specifically. Basically your ferroseed set had rockyhelmet over eviolite so I swapped that out immediately, otherwise I went for pretty much the exact same moveset. I felt like ferroseed could provide great role compression for the likes of kangaspikes playstyle. So Kangaskhan was pretty much the first Pokemon on the team, its one of the best abusers of Spikes the tier has thanks to its powerful fake out + sucker punch dual priority, scrappy and coverage options. It also helps your matchup vs "autopilot" playstyles like weather and trick room. I wanted a spinblocker at this point and dusknoir has been giving me great success on other archetypes, so i thought i might as well use it on this one too. Kangaspikes often finds it difficult to check primeape effectively, so with dusknoir u alleviate that issue and have a ghost type that doesnt bait in skunk which may want to defog on your hazards (eq threatens it). At this point, i want my own hazards control and to fit in with the teams strong priority options i went with hitmonchan. Spread is to live 2 magmortar fire blasts and outspeed abomasnow / things that creep abomasnow in the same spread, which is quite cool. Next i picked CB carracosta, mainly to check archeops, but it also fits nicely with the priority spam strategy we have going on. It typing fits the team nicely, and also gives you a more offensive outlet vs the likes of pyroar and magmortar if hitmonchan gets weakened. Finally i chose scarf mesprit. Its an excellent cleaner, ground resist (with energy ball u can check gastrodon and heavily chip golurk) and can also use healing wish. Healing wish lets u give any poke a second life so if all of your whittling has led to a very good costa cleaning opportunity but it happens to be weak from checking an archeops, u can hwish it back up to full and go for a clean. Hope u enjoy the team!

With Raichu-a + Floatzel as starting core I decided to go with a heavily oriented offensive team, featuring lots of speed control + prio giving it good ways to defeat opposing offensive teams, as well as being able to break through more balance/defensive oriented teams with cb Stoutland, which pairs quite well with tailwind Oricorio being a funny idea for lategame and also a filler move for the scarf set. Shiftry has been put there to have ways for hazard control as well as not losing offensive momentum, giving also important resists, and finally the offensive setter of choice could be either wpolicy golem(which is my initial idea for the first version i made) or golurk, as the latter covers better against ape, while the former gives you an additional fire and fly resist. Hope you enjoy the team.

I'm looking for a balance/defensive team built around this mon. I'm kinda struggling with building Balance and Stall at the moment, but Type: Null is a really dangerous mon imo. The set can be changed in whatever way you like, although I don't really know what other moves Type: Null can use.

I'm not too shabby (I'm so bad it hurts) at teambuilding, but I have not got a clue about PU. So, I would like to see a stally team around my absolute favourite pokemon of all time:

Qwilfish @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 HP / 196 Def / 60 Spe
Impish Nature
- Toxic Spikes
- Spikes
- Waterfall
- Taunt

Sorry there's no sprite, I'm writing this on a brick rn. Would really appreciate it if someone could make this team for me.
Thanks in advance!

Bibarel @ Life Orb
Ability: Simple
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature

- Waterfall
- Superpower

Sounds like a fun Pokémon to use, although it's difficult to built a team around.
