UU Classification Thread

UU Classification Thread

Credit to Iminyourcloset for the idea

This thread was propsed to me by Iminyourcloset in the comments of the UU Playstyle Classification Thread. This thread will basically just be a better version of the Playstyle Classification Thread, the way the categories were split up resulted in things just being kind of unnecessarily placed. This thread will categorize pokemon's roles on a team, as opposed to a pokemon's place in a certain play style.

Like the first thread this is meant to be community driven, so I'll start of by making a few and let everyone else submit their own pokemon to be added. To make things easier it would be great if everyone could follow the same general template as what I do, with a little description as to why it should be added. Thanks!

Role (Ex: Special Sweeper, Tank, Physical Wall)

Hey PTJon7, I think this thread has far better organization.

Offensive Rain Dancer:

Tornadus

Rain Dance set

Good on: Rain, Hyper Offense

(Also shouldn't Ludicolo and Kingdra also be in included in Rain Sweeper? Its probs redundant though.)

For Baton Passers:

Smash Passers:

Smeargle

Smash Pass Set

Good on: Pure Baton Pass

Gorebyss

Smash Pass Set

Good on: Pure Pass, Offense, Rain

Quiver Passers:

Venemoth

Quiver Pass set

Good on: Pure pass, Offense, Bulky Offense

Venemoth for sure deserves a mention as a baton passer as it is one of the best baton passers in the tier, if not flat out the best, its just a shame it sees so little usage :/

Here, I got a couple for ya:

Physical Setup Sweepers

Cobalion

  • Potential sets: Swords Dance
  • Good on: Offense, Balanced
Weavile

  • Potential sets: Swords Dance
  • Good on: Offense, Balanced
Bisharp

  • Potential sets: Sub-Swords Dance
  • Good on: Offense, Bulky Offense, Balanced
Rhyperior

  • Potential sets: Rock Polish, Sub-Swords Dance (I haven't seen this set in action but I've heard of it and figured it'd be worth a mention.)
  • Good on: Offense, Bulky Offense, Balanced

Physical Sweepers

Honchkrow

  • Potential sets: Life Orb, Sub-Roost
  • Good on: Offense, Balanced

Heracross

  • Potential sets: Choice Scarf, Choice Band, Status Orb
  • Good on: Offense, Bulky Offense, Balanced
Victini

  • Potential sets: Choice Scarf, Choice Band
  • Good on: Offense, Balanced
Darmanitan

  • Potential sets: Choice Scarf, Choice Band, Life Orb, Sub-Belly Drum
  • Good on: Offense, Balanced

I could go on and on but I really don't want to swallow up possible sets from half the tier so I'll let whoever else dig in and get what they want. Also for the "Utilities" section you could just put "Supporters". I'm not sure if it'll change anything as they seem almost synonymous with eachother, but it could clear up some confusion possibly. Like usually the word "Utility" according to Smogon is:

A Pokemon who is capable of performing a large variety of tasks, and is usually tailored to one specific task that the team requires. Often, this will be because of a combination of good base stats and a wide movepool.Jirachi is an excellent utility Pokemon, as it is capable of functioning as an effective lead, a defensive supporter, or an offensive sweeper, both physical and special. However, it can only be one of these positions at a time.
While that's kinda what most of the Pokemon in that section do, some of them (some listed, some who can fit this category but aren't listed) are usually assigned to do one specific job, like Froslass for instance. She's a pretty straightforward and (in some cases) one-dimensional Pokemon, but she does her job incredibly well compared to most other Pokemon. Just some food for thought, I guess :P

Hey, another thing, PTJon7, I think in the potential sets, you should make the sets go in order of usage. i.e.:
Heracross
Potential sets: Choice Scarf, Choice Band (Scarf is more commonly used)
Just an idea. Anyway, i'll be posting many many sets later today, so be prepared:)

Edit- I also feel like TR setter and sweepers is kind of redundant; same with rain. Just put them under TR/Rain and do sub-categories like you did with Physical/Special sweepers

I don't have much time but firstly Victini can be used as a trick room setter as it would set more speed when it V-creates. Also Venomoth can baton pass and Mismagius is an offensive spin blocker

Although it's uncommon, it makes for a great revenge killer with 4 types of priority (Mach/Bullet/Sucker Punch, and Fake Out). I think the best set is Mach/Sucker with CC and Rapid Spin.

@PTJon7: I tried to copy the format as close as possible, if not perfect, so you just have to copy+paste.

@Everyone mad at me for taking a ton of pokemon: I'm just trying to fill up the thread quickly so newer players can get the full effect of the thread immediately without having to wait for people to put up 3/4 pokes at a time

I would like to suggest adding VoltTurn to Xatu's suggested playstyles (this should be a no-brainer, really). It gets U-Turn it self, and Magic Bounce is absolutely crucial for keeping hazards off of the player's field, hazards of course being the most reliable way to deal with VoltTurn. I don't think I've ever faced a VoltTurn team without Xatu.

This is more of a question than anything else really; why would you suggest any kind of sweeper for a stall team? Isn't the point of stall to gradually wear down an opponent with residual damage, rather than using a sweeper to muscle through the opponent? As I said before, this is more of a question than anything else really, so if someone can explain this there shouldn't be a problem.

Otherwise, great work with this thread! :)

Iminyourcloset

OBJECTION! What do you mean I have a weakness now?!
is a Battle Simulator Moderator Alumnus
Wow. PTJon7, this thread is amazing. Thank you for making it so perfect! :D
For Cryogonal, I would list it under rapid spinners as offensive. It's weak to SR, but doesn't care about (Toxic) Spikes and has recovery unlike any of the others. Plus, it doesn't take hail damage, and can blizzard spam for a hail team if necessary.
Also, in my personal opinion, I would give Claydol a mention under defensive rapid spinners, but only because of its niche to resist SR, which isn't even that good. But it's something. However, if you feel claydol just kinda sucks too much (I don't blame you, I feel similarly) you can go ahead and just leave it off.

- Potential Sets: Offensive Rapid Spin, Defensive Rapid Spin (idk if this one should be mentioned; it's pitiful defense is just kinda intolerable)
- Good On: Hail, Offense (I guess)

- Potential Sets: Physically Defensive, Specially Defensive
- Good On: Balance, Stall

I'm sorry, idk how to use bullet points o_o.

Claydol's main edge on the other UU rapid spin users is not just a SR resist, but access to levitate. With a combination of levitate and a SR resistance, claydol will take the least amount of damage to entry hazards of any rapid spin user. An immunity to toxic spikes is also very helpful, as other rapid spin users (bar cryogonal) will have to forfeit their longevity in order to spin toxic spikes away. Despite these advantages, its still the most prone to spin-blockers, decreasing its viability.

TPO3

Never practice; Always perform.
Hey PTJon, great work on this thread! Small thing, I'd like to propose that you add a "breakers" category, or whatever you want to call them, for things that hit obscenely hard, but don't actually sweep teams. This would be for stuff like Specs Tinted Lens Yanmega, CB Victini/Darmanitan, CB Flygon, etc. They do lots of damage, but none of them are really "sweepers" persay.

And for my additions:
Set-up Sweepers
Special:
Kingdra
-Potential Sets: Rain Dance
-Good On: Hyper + Standard Offense, Balance

Tanks
Swampert
-Potential Sets: Choice Band, Offensive Stealth Rock, Defensive Stealth Rock
- Good on: uhh... anything except Hyper Offense really. Even then CB isn't /that/ bad. <_<

Supporters
Qwilfish
-Potential Sets: Defensive Spikes, Suicide Rain Dance Lead
-Good On: Balance, Semi and Full Stall, Rain if that's your kind of thing.

Walls
Cresselia
-Potential Sets: Defensive wall, SubCM
-Good On: Stall and Semi-Stall. Balanced as well since it spreads paralysis very nicely.

I got some more for ya. But before I make my suggestions I wanna say that on Bassmaster4's post, that Rotom-H should be listed as being good on VoltTurn. I'm also curious why Sharpedo and Yanmega are listed as being good on VoltTurn, though I'm sure there's a reasonable explanation. Also the fact that some sweepers are listed as being good in Stall in his posts, I'm curious about that too, unless he's hinting at the sweepers powering through the opponent's team after they've been worn down, in which case I'd rather suggest Semi-Stall for those purposes than full-tilt. But anyway...

Physical Sweepers
Crobat

  • Potential Sets: Choice Band
  • Good on: Hyper Offense, Offense, Balanced, VoltTurn
Arcanine

  • Potential Sets: Life Orb
  • Good on: Offense, Bulky Offense, Balanced
Azelf

  • Potential sets: Choice Band
  • Good on: Offense, Balanced, VoltTurn
Machamp

  • Potential sets: Substitute (Not sure if this can be considered as being a setup sweeper or not, I'll leave that up to you)
  • Good on: Offense, Bulky Offense, Balanced

Supporters

Hazard Setters

Qwilfish

  • Potential sets: Physically Defensive Spikes/Toxic Spikes
  • Good on: Offense, Bulky Offense, Balanced, Stall
Mew

  • Potential sets: Support, Stealth Rock
  • Good on: Offense, Bulky Offense, Balanced, Stall

Stallbreakers

Mew

  • Potential sets: Stallbreaker
  • Good on: Bulky Offense, Balanced
Uh...Hail?

Abomasnow (This is kind of a super special case, I'm listing it because the hail it brings supports its team. However you could list this under Hail users, but I'm assuming you didn't consider it since you had Walrein and Rotom-F listed already.)

  • Potential sets: SubSeed, Special Attacker, Physical Attacker, Mixed
  • Good on: Hail, Hail Stall

Offensive Hail Abusers (Most of these I'm listing are regular pokes who are able to spam 100% accurate Blizzards in hail. I don't know if this counts but it's usable, right? I ain't gonna list too many because...lots of stuff gets Blizzard, but I do think it's worth considering the few I got.)

Raikou

  • Potential sets: Special Attacker w/Weather Ball
  • Good on: Hail
Nidoqueen

  • Potential sets: Special Attacker
  • Good on: Hail
Porygon2

  • Potential sets: Duck Tank
  • Good on: Hail

I think you need a Cleric:
Clerics
*Sprite* Umbreon
  • Potential Sets: Wish Support
  • Good on: Stall, Semi-Stall, Balanced(?)

Yep. Umbreon. Sorry, I don't know how to do sprites. Balanced is listed, as it can have some utility with healing sweepers and such, but I'm not sure about that.
I hope this makes it!

Haha as soon as I saw that I went and tried it out myseld, I didn't even know Rhyperior learned Swords Dance. Not that bad really, Rhyperior can often force a switch thanks to it's bulk and resistances. After that I tried Double Dance Rhyperior (Rock Polish + Swords Dance) which was fun, but ultimately not too viable.

Remove Ambipom from "Scouts", it isn't viable in UU despite being part of the tier and is not a good user of U-turn. As a scout, Mienshao and Cinccino are far superior.

Trick Room sweepers:

Rhyperior

Potential Sets: Choice Band, Life Orb
Good on: Trick Room, Bulky Offense

Special Setup Sweepers:

Azelf

Potential Sets: Nasty Plot
Good on: Hyper Offense, Offense, Balanced

Mismagius

Potential Sets: Nasty Plot
Good on: Hyper Offense, Offense

Scolipede

Potential Sets: Swords Dance
Good on: Offense, Balanced, Hyper Offense

Spinblockers:

Dusclops

Potential Sets: Physically Defensive Curse
Good on: Stall

Call me crazy, but if we put Claydol and Ambipom on the list, Dusclops could be on here too.

Sweepers:

Cinccino

Potential Sets: Life Orb, Choice Band
Good on: Balance, Offense, Hyper Offense

Galvantula

Potential Sets: Life Orb
Good on: Balance, Offense, Hyper Offense

Wow this thread is way too good to let die is there some reason I don't know about why nobody is posting!?

Physical Sweeper (Set Up)

Pokemon: Togekiss

Potential Sets: Work Up

Good On: Hyper offense, bulky offense

Special Sweeper (Set Up)

Pokemon: Chandelure

Potential Sets: Flame Charge

Good On: not to many teams but it works so well on my hail team idk

Froslass can go away right? And might as well get rid of Victini too to save time ehehehhehe

The majority of sets on this thread are common/standard effective sets...Work Up Kiss may be cool, but it actually got scrapped on its analysis when they updated it for a reason...Same deal with Flame Charge Chandelure. While these sets can work on their own right, they're not necessarily the most effective sets to point out to new people trying to learn which Pokemon can do what and which team they do it on...

Analysis are done by usually a single person and checked for quality by cute little stamps by 2 or 3 people with rarely more than one or two other people giving input making almost all UU analysis done by at most 6 or maybe 7 people. This is efficient and almost all the analysis are extremely good, professional even because the GP people but this thread I thought was supposed to be community driven. Of course if nobody posts in it then that won't work so yeah fine but if I post a set and if I am (much to many people's dismay I am sure) part of the community then I should at least be able to justify why the sets are effective right?

I forgot to do that in my post so let me do that here eheh

Work Up Togekiss is actually obnoxiously strong being able to OHKO its former counters like Raikou and Zapdos with SR support assuming it uses a LO with Extremespeed. I am sure Drain Punch will maul if not outright KO Snorlax while healing Togekiss sufficiently, the only big problem is lack of bulk and a SR weakness which of course can be worked around. Work Up Togekiss has very very few defensive counters making it almost as good as a stallbreaker as NP Togekiss.

Flame Charge Chandelure uses maximum speed to get a chance to sweep if it can but otherwise it is still effective as simply a kind of tank (absorbs fire moves and moves it is immune to easily). Even without any boosting item he is still obnoxiously strong and can do its job of killing walls badly like Blastoise if they dare switch in, they are going to be taking like 60 or 70% at least after FB and EB so you can easily sweep through them later with for instance a Kingdra. It's not like Chandelure ever really needed four moves absolutely so giving him sweeping chances while maintaining wallbreaking power is very useful.
