After channeling the spirit of the great liberator Simon Bolivar, we have finally freed the mid-season Team Power Rankings! These were prepared by 12 different committees in governments and intelligence agencies around the world. Some individuals put their lives on the line to make these happen, so let's not waste any time and get right to it:
#1 (+1): Tropical Malamar Militia - After finishing the last Power Rankings at #2, the Militia went ahead and won their next two matchups to remain the only undefeated team with a tiebreak differential of an absurd +12 (with just 4 weeks in). That is a little ridiculous, but not as ridiculous as the fact that they are the only team with two undefeated 4-0 players (ojr and Ewin), have no visible weaknesses in any tiers, and are doing all of this with their two highest priced players (cbu and solonor24) with just two wins each. And they've already played the toughest teams in the standings and in the power rankings, with the remaining schedule being against the Blipbugs, Flapples, and Tangelas. It would take a catastrophic and theatrical demise of epic proportions for this team not only to not make the playoffs - but just to not finish the season as the #1 ranked seed. It could happen! But will it? Probably not.
#2 (-1): Yanmegatron and the Destroyers - The Destroyers were looking very strong as the #1 team in the rankings last time, and they kicked off Week 3 with a tough win against the Hippowdons, with their manager Amukamara coming off the bench in the final minutes to seal the win (He is 4-0 with all 4 wins coming against some decent players I guess like Thiago, basaninho, Highways, and Expulso). Unfortunately, coming off the bench now seems like the norm for this team, as they have had to empty their bench for two straight weeks, and even suffered an ACTIVITY loss to lose Week 4 to the Flapples (and the perpetrator is still nowhere to be found). It seemed like Week 4 might be similar to Week 3, as their other co-manager Cam came off the bench to seal an important win, but then Naviii had to get subbed out, and DKM just flat did not show (btw anyone know where he is?) They have tremendous talent on this team, with solid players at every position, but if their players don't show up to play then they probably won't have a chance to stick it out at the end. A showdown with the Enteis next week may be decisive matchup that determines where they will stand.
#3 (+0): Entralink Enteis - When they win, they win big, having two big wins this season of 8-2 and 7-3. When they lose, they lose big, having two big losses of 1-9 and 3-7. But I sensed a new change in this team at the end of Week 4, and it seems like they are finally starting to figure out what they need to do, and who needs to play what, to become the more consistent winner that they were supposed to be when the season started. They don't have any weaknesses in their lineup, and Shellnuts and Diophantine have not lost a game in RBY or GSC this season. Moute seems to finally be back from his vacation in Kamura Village, and if faded love can figure out how to arrange their SS slots they may just shoot the top finally. They face the Yanmegas, Hippowdons, and Flapples the rest of the way, all 3 teams slightly above them in the standings currently, so their future is most certainly in their own hands.
#4 (+0): Hungry Hungry Hippowdons - The Hippowdons have lost their last two weeks, but it was to the top two ranked teams in the Militia and Destroyers, and both were close matchups. With those out of the way, their remaining schedule is not so bad. They close out the season in Week 7 against the last place Lombres, so they are in a good position to make the playoffs as long as they can beat the Lombres and then get one win against either the Enteis or Flapples. While their oldgens are pretty solid, their combined SS/SM record is 4-12 which is by far the worst in the league, and they don't seem to have anyone besides gorex that can really step in and try to be consistent there. This is almost 50% of all the games each week, so they simply cannot hope to win if that keeps up, as it's nearly impossible to just clean sweep ORAS through RBY each week. Three weeks is plenty of time to try to rectify their issues though, so we will have to wait and see what they can do.
#5 (-1): Flapple Bottom Jeans - The Flapples are coming off a strong win against a short-handed Yanmegas team that couldn't even field a full 10-player roster, but a win is a win nonetheless. Having a loss to the Tangelas and a tie with the Lombres does not do them any favors for the rankings though. They are currently tied for 2nd in the standings, but they're going to have to earn their spot on the field with matchups against the Hippowdons, Militia, and Enteis the next three weeks. The way their lineup matches up with those teams is a bit dire though, as all three of those have very solid ancientgen cores that should almost certainly beat the Flapples in RBY and GSC (though Thorx can beat Vani), meaning the Flapples need to come up with wins in 6 out of the remaining 8 tiers. Fortunately for the Flapples, QWILY and Maki have exceeded expectations at the SS slot, allowing them more breathing room with the rest of the tiers. Avarice will need to pick and choose very carefully who he is matching up against and where everyone slots in if the Flapples hope to hang on to a top 4 spot and make it to the playoffs.
#6 (+2): Blipbug City Battlegirls - After performing horridly in line with the low expectations they had at the start of the season, the Blipbugs seem to have finally found some new life. They mixed up their lineup finally for Weeks 3 and 4 and ended up with two big 7-3 wins. But we're not jumping out off our seats just yet - one of those wins was against the last ranked Lombres, while the other was against the hilariously inconsistent Enteis during one of their "bad" weeks. And while very expensive $19k All-Star Utility Player vivalospride is 3-1 playing 3 different tiers, they cannot seriously hope to make a run while their $41k player pokemonisfun has the worst record on their team at 1-3 (tied for worst but still). DnB continues to exceed expectations and sports an undefeated 4-0 record in BW, and they suddenly seem to have an excess of decent SS players, but I am still not sold on their RBY and GSC slots despite both picking up one win the past two weeks, so they will have to basically fight down two tiers to start each of the upcoming three weeks unless one of these players pulls of an unexpected upset. Nonetheless, they have risen up from their early grave and have put themselves in a position to at least make a go for it. Unfortunately for them they have yet to face the top two ranked teams in the Militia and the Destroyers - so beat them in the upcoming weeks and maybe the prize is theirs!
#7 (+0): Tangela Ever After - NOW the fairy tale may be over, folks. The Tangelas are not technically out of contention, but they close the season against the Militia and will basically have to win their other two matchups to even have a chance. Luirromen and JustFranco are two solid SS anchors for them, but they have yet to find anyone else to comfortably fill that third SS slot, as nobody else on the team besides those two have any wins at all in SS. They have two players that are 0-4 in Nalorium and RaJ.Shoot. Justamente is certainly doing his best in RBY, but the RBY pool is too stacked against him (though he has a chance to pick up a win Week 6 against the Battlegirls). The talent on the team is good - Thiago is a great player, LpZ is the one of the best up and coming rising oldgen stars, Amaranth is certainly no scrub, luisotte is a DPP All Star, and Luirromen and JustFranco have been consistent. But jeez somebody else has to do something - these guys can't all win all their games every week, they need some more people to pick up the slack and get at least a win or two here or there.
#8 (-2): Bad Lombres de Po Town - I have some news for you - the Bad Lombres are simply bad. But despite this, they are (somehow) not out of playoff contention. In fact, if they just flat win the next three weeks they probably have secured a top 4 slot. It's definitely possible - they already faced the Militia, so they just need to clean the Tangelas, Hippowdons, and Yanmegas. Lyss has looked like a perennial ORAS All-Star, while Drew and phoopes are sporting a solid 3-1 record. But that's about all they've got going for them really. Pannu is certainly enthusiastic about the season and tries his best, but he is coming off two tough losses the last two weeks (but we hope he can recover and get back to winning). Like the Tangelas, they also have two 0-4 players in Yami and jcbc. Their oldgens are a total mess - last week they picked up their first win ever in ADV. That still leaves them with a 2-14 record in BW/DPP/ADV/GSC, with a 0-8 combined record in DPP and GSC. Clearly they need to find a new arrangement there. The next matchup against the Tangelas in Week 5 will determine which of these two teams is definitively out of contention. Or, perhaps, they will both put each other out of their own misery and tie the week, which would leave neither team with a possibility to make it to the big dance afterwards.
