Tyranitar @ Assault Vest

Ok pretty unespected set.
But it's really cool for every special Pokémon that doe not run a fighting move. It takes well Tapu Koko, Tapu Lele locked in every moves that is not Focus Blast. Charizard Y can be a victim of this thing if you played right. Also it has a pretty support with Rock Tomb or Ice Beam. Well, the moves is on you, the important thing is that Tar is running a rock-type move.
This Tyranitar can switch in on every Volcarona's moves without troubles.

+1 252+ SpA Volcarona Bug Buzz vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Assault Vest Tyranitar in Sand: 84-102 (40.5 - 49.2%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
+1 252+ SpA Volcarona Giga Drain vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Assault Vest Tyranitar in Sand: 48-58 (23.1 - 28%) -- 72.2% chance to 4HKO

While Tyranitar needs just to use a Rock Tomb:

0 Atk Tyranitar Rock Tomb vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Volcarona: 244-292 (151.5 - 181.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO

If Volcarona is sashed, the sand will break it and Volcarona is doomed.

Garchomp @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Rough Skin
Level: 50
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Earthquake
- Outrage
- Stone Edge
- Rock Tomb

can switch in as it QDs or revenge kill even after it's QD'd. always outspeeds when they're at +1, and can ko with a rock move or one of its stabs if you get some chip damage. generally solid mon that fits well on many teams too.

@ Sitrus Berry
Ability: Serene Grace
EVs: 252 HP / 52 SpD / 204 Spe
Calm Nature
- Thunder Wave
- Air Slash
- Roost
- Aura Sphere / Fire Blast / Hidden Power Ground / Ancient Power / Toxic / Dazzling Gleam

Acts as a bulky special tank that outspeeds up to +1 Base 100 that are Paralyzed, like obviously Volcarona or even Scarf Lele, +1 Zard, and such. It even outspeeds max speed Celesteela and max speed 60 before using Thunder Wave.

it can easily win the 1vs1 Scenario, always 2hkoing even if Volcarona goes +1 and surviving to a +1 Fire Blast or to 3 +0 Fire Blasts:
0 SpA Togekiss Air Slash vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Volcarona: 96-114 (59.6 - 70.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
0 SpA Togekiss Air Slash vs. +1 4 HP / 0 SpD Volcarona: 66-78 (40.9 - 48.4%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
Modest Volcarona: 252+ SpA Volcarona Fire Blast vs. 252 HP / 52+ SpD Togekiss: 82-97 (42.7 - 50.5%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Sitrus Berry recovery

It can switch in if Volcarona Quiver Dances and survive to a +1 Fire Blast, using Twave in return and going for the Paraflinch, always outspeeding it at +1 (it outspeeds Timid Volcarona even if i'm using Modest Volcarona to calculate the max damage output). Having great chances to beat a +1 Timid Volcarona, summing the chances to survive to Two +1 Fire Blasts (40%) and the flinch rate (60%) and the Paralysis.
Timid Volcarona: +1 252 SpA Volcarona Fire Blast vs. 252 HP / 52+ SpD Togekiss: 111-132 (57.8 - 68.7%) -- 62.5% chance to 2HKO after Sitrus Berry recovery

It also has a decent chance (around 40%, even considering the 10% miss rate of twave) to beat a Modest one, if you are switching into a +1 Volcarona, with its Twave and the Paraflinch. In the first turn you will always survive to a +1 Fire Blast, paralyzing Volcarona and outspeeding it. Then you need to make Flinch happen for two turns.
Modest Volcarona: +1 252+ SpA Volcarona Fire Blast vs. 252 HP / 52+ SpD Togekiss: 123-145 (64 - 75.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Sitrus Berry recovery

Also, it will survive everytime to a +0 Z-Fire Blast, but sadly fainting versus a +1 one.
Modest Z-Fire Blast: 252+ SpA Volcarona Inferno Overdrive (185 BP) vs. 252 HP / 52+ SpD Togekiss: 136-162 (70.8 - 84.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Sitrus Berry recovery

It's STAB combination is resisted by Fire-types. One of the most common is Alolan Marowak.

Marowak-Alola @ Thick Club
Ability: Lightning Rod / Rock Head (Was going to put Cursed Body in there, but it's not as consistent)
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Atk / 8 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Shadow Bone
- Fire Punch / Flare Blitz
- Stealth Rock / Stone Edge
- Bonemerang

Its typing resists both of Volc's STABs and makes it a great check/tank to certain Pokemon. Shadow Bone & Fire Punch are two reliable drawback free STAB moves that hit twice as hard with a Club, also hitting on Volc's lower Defense, one of two stats that sadly aren't boosted by Quiver Dance. Volc is crippled by Stealth Rock. Bonemerang is there to hit any Volc behind a Substitute and it also hits Heatran for super-effective damage. It needs to be careful of switching into HP Ground as it's a likely 2HKO even if SR isn't on their side.

Here are some quite impressive calcs (and why Stone Edge might not be necessary):
252+ Atk Thick Club Marowak-Alola Shadow Bone vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Volcarona: 313-369 (100.6 - 118.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ Atk Thick Club Marowak-Alola Flare Blitz vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Volcarona: 441-519 (141.8 - 166.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO
+1 252 SpA Volcarona Hidden Power Ground vs. 248 HP / 8 SpD Marowak-Alola: 240-284 (74.3 - 87.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Submissions are now closed! There are to be no edits of your own Pokemon, nor are there to be any new submissions. A few quick things to note;
  • Voting will close on the 11/3 at 12:30pm GMT+11 (8:30pm EST 10/3), where the next Vitim Of The Week will also be announced
  • You can't vote for your own submission
  • You can only change your vote once, so think carefully before doing so
  • You can vote even if you haven't made a submission. It is expected that you vote if you did submit yourself, but not compulsory
Another interesting week. From the submissions, we can tell that there really aren't that many reliable answers to Volcarona. With Volcarona's four move syndrome, it's difficult to tell if your designated Volcarona answer can actually win or not. Having to guess between the 4th move of Giga Drain / Hidden Power Ground / Hidden Power Ice as well of the item choice of Focus Sash / Firium Z / Buginium Z makes countering Volcarona often situational. Interested to see how the voting goes. Best of luck everyone!

Alolan-Muk @Assault vest
Nature: Sassy
Ability: Poison touch
252 HP / 4 atk / 252 SpD
- Rock tomb / Rock slide
- Knock off
- Poison jab
- Fire blast / Clear smog / Shadow sneak

Volcarona is one of the most threating fire type on meta. After 1QD it can sweep an entire team. The acess to a wide movepool allows it to use many Z moves like my favorite, Z-hurricane.

Because of this I decided to post a tank capable of taking even a 2+ volc, Assault vest Alolan-Muk. The EV spread can take almost any special attack coming from volcarona (even a 2+ fire blast modest nature)

+2 252+ SpA Volcarona Fire Blast vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Assault Vest Muk-Alola: 102-121 (48.1 - 57%) -- 90.2% chance to 2HKO

Rock type moves are obligatory. With only 4 attack investment, A-muk can do massive damage on volc to a 0 Def/4 HP volc with Rock tomb, while Rock slide OHKO it.

4 Atk Muk-Alola Rock Tomb vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Volcarona: 136-164 (84.4 - 101.8%) -- 6.3% chance to OHKO

4 Atk Muk-Alola Rock Slide vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Volcarona: 168-200 (104.3 - 124.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Knock off can be used to fight against P2 or other defensive mons. Poison jab with the poison touch ability has great chance to poison the opponent. The last move act as a filler. Fire blast allows to take opponent ferrothorns and skarmory. Clear smog can be used to stop Evo-Chain-Boost or other setupers like cloyster. Shadow sneak allows to beat sash volc if you are using Rock Tomb.

However, this set has problems. Volc can use WoW + roost, a set which I've seen at PS and few jp players. That will anti-counter A-muk, which is terrible. The good thing, its not a soo common set. Wow isn't at the most used moves by volc at PGL usage stats.

Dragonite @ Flyinium Z
Ability: Multiscale
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Fly
- Extreme Speed
- Fire Punch / Rock Slide
- Dragon Dance

Volcarona gained some new toys in this generation including grassium solar beam which means a lot of the bulky waters that we used to look towards for checks may no longer work reliably. However being able to run that comes at a cost, Volcarona usually carries both of its STABs as well as quiver dance on most sets which leaves it room for one coverage option which is generally HP ground, HP ice, or giga drain/solar beam. Some of the traditional checks like bulky dragons still work fine though, with a few updates to reflect new item choices and a meta where Outrage is essentially suicide.

Obviously Dragonite does not like HP ice, but ground is the more common coverage. Volcarona players have to choose whether they get walled by Dragonite or Heatran with that slot, and since ground is considered the more standard choice, Dragonite is the safer of the two plays. With multiscale, its main advantage over say, Salamence or Altaria here, if you switch in on a quiver dance Volcarona cannot stop you from OHKOing with Z-Fly, even at +2 HP Ice is not enough when multiscale is up. If you're a gambling man you can try to set up in its face but you need to worry about the odd defensive variant burning you as well as the threat of HP Ice. The only way Volcarona beats this set is predicting the switch in with a neutral HP Ice.

Fire Punch is obviously the better all around coverage option due to flying/normal both being resisted by the common steel types, but rock slide gives you a non-Z move that will OHKO Volcarona if you're really that worried about it as well as potential for hax combined with DD.

Extreme Speed is also a niche attacking option here. if Volcarona takes SR damage, it's put into range at about a 40% chance of KOing. Not the ideal play, but it's there if you need it.

Nihilego @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Beast Boost
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Power Gem
- Sludge Wave
- Thunderbolt
- Hidden Power Ice / Hidden Power Fire

Nihilego is an interesting check to Volcarona. Its unique typing and nice HP and Special Defense allows it to come in safely on +1 Volc, aside from the deadly HP Ground(which is not uncommon, bear in mind), outspeed it and KO it through the +1 SpD boost unless it's running a crazy amount of bulk.

Nihilego also has a good matchup against popular threats such as both Charizards, Thundurus and the four Tapus.
Timid Volcarona
+1 252 SpA Volcarona Fire Blast vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Nihilego: 57-68 (30.8 - 36.7%) -- 68.2% chance to 3HKO
+1 252 SpA Volcarona Inferno Overdrive (185 BP) vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Nihilego: 96-114 (51.8 - 61.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
+1 252 SpA Volcarona Bug Buzz vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Nihilego: 47-56 (25.4 - 30.2%) -- guaranteed 4HKO
+1 252 SpA Volcarona Giga Drain vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Nihilego: 53-63 (28.6 - 34%) -- 1.4% chance to 3HKO
+1 252 SpA Volcarona Hidden Power Ground vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Nihilego: 168-200 (90.8 - 108.1%) -- 43.8% chance to OHKO
+1 252 SpA Volcarona Supersonic Skystrike (185 BP) vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Nihilego: 64-76 (34.5 - 41%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

Modest Volcarona
+1 252+ SpA Volcarona Fire Blast vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Nihilego: 63-75 (34 - 40.5%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
+1 252+ SpA Volcarona Inferno Overdrive (185 BP) vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Nihilego: 105-125 (56.7 - 67.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
+1 252+ SpA Volcarona Bug Buzz vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Nihilego: 51-61 (27.5 - 32.9%) -- guaranteed 4HKO
+1 252+ SpA Volcarona Giga Drain vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Nihilego: 58-69 (31.3 - 37.2%) -- 83.7% chance to 3HKO
+1 252+ SpA Volcarona Hidden Power Ground vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Nihilego: 184-220 (99.4 - 118.9%) -- 93.8% chance to OHKO
+1 252+ SpA Volcarona Supersonic Skystrike (185 BP) vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Nihilego: 70-83 (37.8 - 44.8%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

252 SpA Nihilego Power Gem vs. +1 4 HP / 0 SpD Volcarona: 172-208 (106.8 - 129.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO
+1 252 SpA Volcarona Hidden Power Ground vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Nihilego in Sand: 112-136 (60.5 - 73.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
+1 252+ SpA Volcarona Hidden Power Ground vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Nihilego in Sand: 124-148 (67 - 80%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Gyarados @ Flynium Z
Ability: Intimidate / Moxie
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Bounce
- Earthquake
- Waterfall / Ice Fang

Honestly, any non-mega Gyara set is amazing against Volcarona (and you can just choose to not mega if you are running mega). I was very tempted to post a Toxic + Bounce + Leftovers set for extra style points but I think Z-Bounce is enough style.

Gyara really only cares about +1 Hidden Power Rock but that's used so little it might as well not even exist.

Would post calcs but it's not needed, Gyara OHKOes comfortably and tanks moves from Volc.

NOVED. Splashable, easy to use, versatile and overall the quickest and easiest way to deal with a boosted Volcarona. Not much else to say

I don't care

Tyranitar doesn't have to worry about random coverage options, and the sandstorm ensures it OHKOs every Volcarona with a 95% accurate Rock Tomb. Good enough for me. With Ice Beam and Fire Blast, it can also catch pokemon like lando-t, ferro, celesteela etc.

NOVED

Super easy to make space for on a team, checks unboosted or +1 Volcarona guaranteed, amazing revenge killer against tons of other common pokemon as well... I don't think I need to go on about this

NOVED. Really easy check. Can bring in in the quiver dance as well, doesn't have to worry about +2 volc either unless z bug buzz or hp ice, both of which aren't on the popular sets

Congratulations to NOVED for winning VoTW 6 (Volcarona) with the submission of Garchomp! Your post will be logged into the archive.

Victim Of The Week #7 - Mega Salamence

Step 1: Dragon Dance. Step 2: Win. So, how do you deal with Mega Salamence?
Submissions are open and will close in four days from now. Best of luck everyone!

Cresselia (F) @ Rocky Helmet

Cresselia works well against Salamence.
Its bulk allow her to take Double-Edge without many trouble, Earthquake just does not exist for Cresselia, and special moves like Hyper Voice, Fire Blast or Draco Meteor are not a problem too.

Cresselia instead has a recovery, a support move and Ice Beam. These things make it good for beating down Mence, or in the worst scenario, weak it a lot and let for its teammates a easy work with the support of Trick Room or Lunar Dance.

252+ Atk Aerilate Mega Salamence Double-Edge vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Cresselia: 93-111 (40.9 - 48.8%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
+1 252+ Atk Aerilate Mega Salamence Double-Edge vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Cresselia: 139-165 (61.2 - 72.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

And theorically, after the recoil from Double-Edge and the damage from Rocky Helmet, I think a single Ice Beam is enough.

0 SpA Cresselia Ice Beam vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Mega Salamence: 120-144 (70.1 - 84.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

From the special set:
252+ SpA Aerilate Mega Salamence Hyper Voice vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Cresselia: 76-91 (33.4 - 40%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
252+ SpA Mega Salamence Draco Meteor vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Cresselia: 93-109 (40.9 - 48%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

Problems are come in case of a bulky annoying set, and as long Roost nerfs the Ice Beam's power; your opponent can try to trick ya, but Trick Room is here, to let you hit it before it goes for Roost.
Also I think Cresselia is good right now as Mawile is now available.

By virtue of its typing and ability, Bronzong eats most of what Mega Salamence throws at it, resisting Double-Edge/Hypervoice, Draco Meteor, and being immune to Earthquake.
Its access to Trick Room can also turn Mega Salamence's excellent speed against it, slowing it down while supporting its teammates with lower speed, such as Mega Mawile, while Stealth Rock whittles down its HP if it switches in, making it even more suceptible to HP Ice.

4 Atk Aerilate Salamence-Mega Double-Edge vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Bronzong: 37-44 (21.2 - 25.2%) -- possible 5HKO after Leftovers recovery

252+ SpA Aerilate Salamence-Mega Hyper Voice vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Bronzong: 42-51 (24.1 - 29.3%) -- 0% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers
recovery

In return Bronzong can 2HKO with Hidden Power Ice:

4 SpA Bronzong Hidden Power Ice vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Salamence-Mega: 88-104 (51.4 - 60.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO (Result is no different even with Stealth Rock and/or if Mega Salamence has a -SpD nature)

Mega Salamence's only hope against Bronzong is Fire Blast, its only move guarenteed to 2HKO, or get up multiple DDances, in which Bronzong can either deal a chunk of damage with HP Ice or cripple Mega Salamence's speed with Trick Room.

Porygon2 @ Eviolite
Ability: Download / Trace
EVs: 244 HP/ 220 Def/ 44 SpD
Relaxed Nature
-Ice Beam
-Thunderbolt
-Recover
-Trick Room / Toxic

Porygon2 is a good check to Mega Salamence. Its great bulk and reliable recovery allows it to take it on, and even the Toxic Roost set can be weakened or forced out with Trick Room or a well-timed Toxic of your own, depending on your set. Trick Room is also great for teammates like Mega Mawile.

DD set
252+ Atk Aerilate Mega Salamence Double-Edge vs. 244 HP / 220+ Def Eviolite Porygon2: 78-93 (40.8 - 48.6%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
+1 252+ Atk Aerilate Mega Salamence Double-Edge vs. 244 HP / 220+ Def Eviolite Porygon2: 117-138 (61.2 - 72.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252+ SpA Aerilate Mega Salamence Hyper Beam vs. 244 HP / 44 SpD Eviolite Porygon2: 106-126 (55.4 - 65.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Porygon2's calcs

Zapdos [Leftovers]
Ability: Static
Nature: Bold
EVs: 252 HP/ 252 Def/ 4 spatk
- Discharge
- Hidden Power Ice
- Roost
- Heat Wave/Toxic

If we're talking about the standard set of DDance, Zapdos completely walls it thanks to virtue of its typing, ability, and move set.
Calcs: +1 252 Atk Aerilate Salamence-Mega Double-Edge vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Zapdos: 80-94 (40.6 - 47.7%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
4 SpA Zapdos Hidden Power Ice vs. 44 HP / 0 SpD Salamence-Mega: 124-148 (70.4 - 84%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

The only way for Salamence to beat Zapdos is Dragon Claw or Outrage, but even with those, it has to worry about Static, which has a 51% chance of paralyzing Salamence and ruining its sweep.
