Project Victim of the Week

Counter:

goodra.gif

Goodra @ Assault Vest
Ability: Sap Sipper
EVs: 248 HP / 252 SpA / 8 SpD
Modest Nature
- Draco Meteor / Dragon Pulse
- Fire Blast
- Sludge Bomb / Thunderbolt
- Focus Blast

Nice counter. He resists to all of Gengar's attacks , well , actually he takes very probably a 4HKO from Sludge Wave and a 5HKO from both Shadow Ball and Focus Blast , i'd call this a big resistance. Thanks mainly to Assault Vest he can acquire large Bulkyness in special defense and can surely resist in the worst case scenario. With Draco Meteor he can surely OHKO Gengar , but you can also use Dragon Pulse as alternative which does a sure 2HKO and is still great on Goodra.

Calcs:
252+ SpA Goodra Draco Meteor vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Gengar: 262-309 (100.3 - 118.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252+ SpA Goodra Dragon Pulse vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Gengar: 171-202 (65.5 - 77.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252 SpA Life Orb Gengar Sludge Wave vs. 248 HP / 8 SpD Assault Vest Goodra: 95-113 (24.8 - 29.5%) -- 99.9% chance to 4HKO

252 SpA Life Orb Gengar Shadow Ball vs. 248 HP / 8 SpD Assault Vest Goodra: 79-95 (20.6 - 24.8%) -- guaranteed 5HKO

252 SpA Life Orb Gengar Focus Blast vs. 248 HP / 8 SpD Assault Vest Goodra: 81-95 (21.1 - 24.8%) -- guaranteed 5HKO

Amoonguss @ Black Sludge
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Foul Play
- Spore
- Giga Drain
- Synthesis / Clear Smog / Stun Spore / whatever

Counter

Gengar can't 2HKO Amoonguss with anything, Sludge Wave maxes out at 46% damage. Amoonguss 2HKOs back with Foul Play, provided that Gengar has taken 2 rounds of Life Orb recoil. Regenerator + Black Sludge heals off whatever damage Gengar does if it switches out of Amoonguss. Synthesis lets it get off the 2nd Foul Play without having to switch out for healing, while Stun Spore just makes Gengar so much easier to play around, and Clear Smog is for non-Gengar reasons.

The only Gengar sets that really give Amoonguss problems tend to use 2 support moves which you won't see much on LO Gengar. The first is Sub + Wisp with 0 Attack EVs, because Amoonguss can't break the Sub when it's burnt, and the other is Taunt + Destiny Bond because the status spores are Amoonguss' best ways of playing around Destiny Bond.

Gyarados @ Leftovers
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 248 HP / 252 SpD / 8 Spe
Careful Nature
- Waterfall
- Rest
- Sleep Talk
- Thunder Wave

The classic SpDef Gyarados set here, and it works pretty damn well to check powerful Special attackers. Waterfall is always a 2HKO on Gengar, so no issues about breaking the sub here. Sludge Wave is Gengar's strongest options but it maxes out at 44%, which secures a 3HKO. Shadow Ball is a 4HKO. You can (almost, I'll detail below) always switch in and T-wave or just go for the Waterfall since you'll (almost) never be 2HKO'd.

While WoW normally scares a lot of Gengar counters, Rest-Talk is a great way to not really care. Plus, even when burned, Waterfall still breaks Subs without investment (however, it's more likely to be a 4HKO: 70% chance or so).

The reason Gyarados here is a hard check and not a counter is for 2 reasons. First, if Shadow Ball incurs the SpDef drop, then Sludge Wave will KO Gyarados (Shadow Ball won't, but that's irrelevant). Second, Taunt+Destiny Bond makes life hard assuming you can't get a Thunder Wave off before Gengar subs.

Conkeldurr @ Assault Vest
Ability: Guts
EVs: 252 Atk / 252 SpD / 4 Def
Adamant Nature
- Drain Punch
- Mach Punch
- Ice Punch
- Knock Off

Conkeldurr can take any attack LO Gengar throws at it and OHKO with Knock-Off. Though seeing as how it can only switch in once, it is a check.

252 SpA Life Orb Gengar Sludge Wave vs. 0 HP / 252 SpD Assault Vest Conkeldurr: 140-165 (39.8 - 47%) -- 0.4% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock
252+ Atk Conkeldurr Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Gengar: 372-438 (141.9 - 167.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Meloetta as a counter:

Meloetta @ Assault Vest
Ability: Serene Grace
EVs: 248 HP / 252 SpA / 8 SpD
Modest Nature
- Psychic/Psyshock
- Hyper Voice
- Focus Blast
- Shadow Ball/Thunderbolt

Meloetta can easily switch into any of gengars moves and ko it back with psychic stab. Assault vest boosts is good special defence to be able tank heaps of mons better.
Calcs
252 SpA Life Orb Gengar Sludge Wave vs. 248 HP / 8 SpD Assault Vest Meloetta: 109-129 (27 - 32%) -- 54% chance to 3HKO after Stealth Rock
252+ SpA Meloetta Psychic vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Gengar: 404-476 (154.7 - 182.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Dragonite @ Leftovers
Ability: Multiscale
EVs: 216 Atk / 64 Atk / 228 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Dragon Claw
- Roost
- Extreme Speed
- Fire Punch / Superpower

252 SpA Life Orb Gengar Sludge Wave vs. 216 HP / 228 SpD Multiscale Dragonite: 82-96 (21.7 - 25.4%) -- possible 5HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 SpA Life Orb Gengar Sludge Wave vs. 216 HP / 228 SpD Dragonite: 164-192 (43.5 - 50.9%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
64+ Atk Dragonite Dragon Claw vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Gengar: 195-229 (74.7 - 87.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO (56.3% to OHKO after 2 rounds of LO recoil, 100% to OHKO after 3 rounds)

Dragon Claw does a minimum of 74.7%, which means as long as Dragonite gets 3 rounds of LO recoil, or 2 Dragon Claw in, it can beat Gengar. Brings about 3 scenarios:
1. Gengar Taunts as you switch in: Just go and 2HKO it with Dragon Claw
2. Gengar attacks as you switch in: Go for the Roost, then OHKO next turn since Gengar takes 3 rounds of LO recoil
3. Gengar attacks as you switch in, then Taunt as you Roost: You OHKO 56.3% of the time since 2 rounds of LO. Then if you are the unlucky 44.7%, then you will end up with a double KO, or you can switch out let him KO himself. But if he Taunts, he risks being nailed by a Dragon Claw anyway, so it's still in your favor.

Weavile
Status: Check

weavile.gif

Weavile @ Life Orb
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 Atk / 24 Def / 232 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Knock Off
- Ice Shard
- Ice Punch
- Low Kick/Pursuit

Weavile is a pretty decent mon, it got Knock Off which is a very spammable move, and it has an epic speed tier, outspeeding the lati twins and gengar. It is also an epic genie killer with it's strong STAB priority Ice Shard. Weavile is a check to gengar because it can switch in on Shadow Ball, Taunt. It can also come in on Sludge Wave if rocks aren't up. Life Orb is a great choice for a fast n frail sweeper like Weavile. Jolly and 232 Speed EVs lets it outspeed base 110's like Timid Gengar, Timid Lati@s, and Timid Starmie. It also lets Weavile outrun Greninja and take advantage of Protean and hit it with a knock off. Knock off is a super spammable move this gen, because it has high base power, and can knock items off. It also gets STAB on Weavile. Ice Shard is priority needed to take out genies like Scarf Lando-T, and outspeed Thundurus's prankster thunder wave and avoid getting crippled, while also destroying it in the process. Ice Punch is Weavile's second strongest STAB, and hits stuff like Gliscor, and Hippodown. Low Kick rounds out the sets coverage, and it hits stuff that would otherwise wall it, like Tyranitar, Heatran. Pursuit can also be used to pursuit trap weak psychic and ghost types, but Low Kick is probably preferred because it hits way more stuff. As I said before, 232 Speed EVs and Jolly outspeeds Greninja, the lati twins, gengar and starmie. Max attack is used to hit has hard as possible, and the rest is dumped into defense to help take priority better. Weavile fits onto a wide number of teams due to it's epic coverage, high attack, high speed, and ability to check a wide range of strong attackers like thundurus, gengar and garchomp. It also provides strong priority for the team in the form of ice shard. Okay yeah that's basically it, weavile is a great check to gengar because it can switch in on shadow ball and taunt, and can OHKO with knock off.

Relevant calcs:
252 SpA Life Orb Gengar Shadow Ball vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Weavile: 97-116 (34.5 - 41.2%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
252 Atk Life Orb Weavile Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Gengar: 593-697 (227.2 - 267%) -- guaranteed OHKO
Weavile can also pursuit trap gengar
252 Atk Life Orb Weavile Pursuit vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Gengar: 244-291 (93.4 - 111.4%) -- 62.5% chance to OHKO (guaranteed OHKO if gengar attacked weavile on the switch because of life orb recoil)
One of the best physical tanks in OU is OHKOed by Weavile's ice punch
252 Atk Life Orb Weavile Ice Punch vs. 244 HP / 0 Def Gliscor: 499-593 (141.7 - 168.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO
And has a decent chance to 2HKO max max impish hippodown
252 Atk Life Orb Weavile Ice Punch vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Hippowdon: 198-234 (47.1 - 55.7%) -- 69.9% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

EDIT: I just read the post again, and it says keep w-o-w in mind when posting, so even with weavile burned, it still OHKOes with knock off.
252 Atk Life Orb burned Weavile Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Gengar: 296-348 (113.4 - 133.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO
Substitute can be annoying because it gives gengar the chance to OHKO with Sludge Wave, but that's why Weavile is only a check. It can come in on Shadow Ball, Taunt, Destiny Bond, Will-O-Wisp, and Pain Split, while OHKOing (even if burned) with a strong knock off.

Drapion: Counter

Drapion @ Assault Vest
Ability: Battle Armor
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Atk / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
-Knock Off
-Pursuit
-Poison Jab
-Earthquake / Aqua Tail

Gengar does pitiful damage to Drapion while this basically completely wrecks Gengar. Pursuit can checkmate Gengar, although Knock Off must be used can remove items and annoy mons in general. By running two moves that kill Gengar, you make sure you beat even SubDisable variants. Poison Jab cuz STAB is nice, and then the last slot is a toss up as Earthquake rounds out your coverage, but Aqua Tail hits some stuff a bit harder like Rhypherior, and mega Camerupt when it comes out. Drapion takes basically nothing from Gengar's attacks, and can even Pursuit trap it unlike several other counters, meaning it only needs to come in once to do the job. Finally you can run surprise sets like Scarf meaning you kill before DBond or WoW, although you lose some tanking power.
Calcs:
252 SpA Gengar Focus Blast vs. 248 HP / 252+ SpD Assault Vest Drapion: 76-90 (22.1 - 26.2%) -- 10% chance to 4HKO
8 Atk Drapion Pursuit vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Gengar: 240-284 (91.9 - 108.8%) -- 50% chance to OHKO
KO after 1 LO round ^

Raikou - Check

243.png

Raikou @ Assault Vest
EVs: 252 SpA / 32 SpD / 224 Spe
Timid Nature
- Thunderbolt
- Volt Switch
- Hidden Power Ice
- Extrasensory/Shadow Ball

Raikou can switch in all gengar moves and OhKO gengar thanks shadow ball/extrasensory + LO recoil. There is some problem if you switch in sludge wave with rocks on the field. The EVs provide enough Speed to outrun Thundurus and give Raikou a good enough damage output, with the rest in Special Defense to get a bit more special bulk out of the Assault Vest. Thunderbolt is the main STAB, Volt switch gives it a safe move to pivot, Hidden Power Ice is compulsory coverage to hit Landorus, Landorus-T, Gliscor, and Garchomp, shadow ball for lati@s or extrasensory for MegaVenu.

Calcs

252 SpA Raikou Extrasensory vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Gengar: 204-240 (77.8 - 91.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252 SpA Life Orb Gengar Sludge Wave vs. 0 HP / 32 SpD Assault Vest Raikou: 133-156 (41.4 - 48.5%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
252 SpA Life Orb Gengar Shadow Ball vs. 0 HP / 32 SpD Assault Vest Raikou: 109-130 (33.9 - 40.4%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

Charizard-Y

6-mega-y.png

Charizard @ Charizardite Y
Ability: Blaze -> Drought
EVs: 240 HP / 100 Def / 136 SpD / 32 Spe
Calm Nature
- Fire Blast / Flamethrower
- Focus Blast / Solarbeam
- Roost
- Will-O-Wisp

Checks LO Gengar very well in addition to other threats. Char-Y has a surprisingly solid special defense stat that, with some investment, can take on a lot of different special attackers. Char-Y isn't crippled by Taunt, doesn't really care about Subs, and is immune to burns. Flamethrower OHKOs Gengar every time, but Fire Blast is also useable to deal damage to other threats at the expense of accuracy. One reason this is a check and not a counter is that you have to keep Rocks off of the field, and even then it stands a shot at checking Gengar. Special Defense drops and the chance of Poison also weaken Char-Y's ability to check Gengar effectively.

Calcs:
0 SpA Mega Charizard Y Flamethrower vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Gengar in Sun: 276-325 (105.3 - 124%) -- guaranteed OHKO
0 SpA Mega Charizard Y Fire Blast vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Gengar in Sun: 337-397 (128.6 - 151.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252 SpA Life Orb Gengar Sludge Wave vs. 240 HP / 136+ SpD Mega Charizard Y: 144-172 (40.3 - 48.1%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

Heatran @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature/Modest Nature
- Overheat/Fire Blast
- Flash Cannon
- Earth Power
- Ancient Power/Stone Edge

This is ScarfTran, a very underrated threat in this meta, popularized by CBB's RMT. Anyways, Heatran can switch in on shadow ball, sludge wave, taunt, will o wisp etc and proceed to nuke it with an overheat. Timid allows you to outspeed more stuff than modest, but modest can definitely be used for more power. Overheat deals more damage than fire blast, but hurts heatran's late game cleaning possibilities. Flash Cannon allows Heatran to hurt fairies with STAB steel type attacks, earth power destroys other heatran which happen to wall this set, and ancient power or stone edge beat up volcarona, zard y and talonflame. The EVs maximize heatran's speed and special attack, and choice scarf is obviously used to turn heatran into a very deadly sweeper and revenge killer. It is also not commonly prepared for, and can often nag a few surprise kills here and there. I think that's about it, this set is pretty standard, and now time for some calcs.

252+ SpA Heatran Overheat vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Gengar: 295-348 (113 - 133.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ SpA Heatran Fire Blast vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Gengar: 249-294 (95.4 - 112.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock
252 SpA Life Orb Gengar Shadow Ball vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Heatran: 161-191 (49.8 - 59.1%) -- 99.6% chance to 2HKO

Garchomp@Assault Vest
EV's: 252 Attack/252 Spe/4 SpA
Trait: Rough Skin
Hasty Nature
-Outrage
-Earthquake
-Stone Edge
-Fire Blast

This is personally my favorite 4 moves to use with Garchomp as it helps cover so many different threats. Skarmory gets roasted by Fire Blast and Togekiss gets hit hard by Stone Edge. Since this is supposed to be against LO Gengar though, here's the deal. An Assault Vest makes Garchomp much bulkier than he already is and the EV's allow him to never get 2HKO'd after SR. Chomp resists Sludge Wave and Focus Blast has shit accuracy, while Shadow Ball has the same power as FB, but isn't strong enough to be able to finish the job against Garchomp.

252 SpA Life Orb Gengar Shadow Ball vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Assault Vest Garchomp: 133-156 (37.2 - 43.6%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock
252 SpA Life Orb Gengar Focus Blast vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Assault Vest Garchomp: 131-155 (36.6 - 43.4%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock
252 SpA Life Orb Gengar Sludge Wave vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Assault Vest Garchomp: 77-91 (21.5 - 25.4%) -- 54.1% chance to 4HKO after Stealth Rock

Ditto @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Imposter
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpD
Relaxed Nature
IV: 0 Atk / 30 Def / 1 Spe (for HP Ice) or 0 Atk / 30 SpA / 0 Spe (for HP Fire)
Happiness: 0 (since people have been using Frustration Mega Pinsir a lot lately)

Moves:
- Transform
-
-
-

Ditto can come in on any of Gengar's attack except Shadow Ball and Substitute, outspeed Gengar and OHKO with a Super Effective Shadow Ball. Focus Blast and Sludge Wave can be used if you predict the opponent switching out but must be used with caution since Gengar is either immune to or 4x resists the move and can OHKO back with Shadow Ball.

The EVs are to minimize damage from Stealth Rock and Struggle. Also, the Speed IV is low to win the Struggle war in a Ditto vs Ditto match.

Calculations:
1) Ditto switching-in
252 SpA Life Orb Gengar Shadow Ball vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Gengar: 432-510 (165.5 - 195.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 SpA Life Orb Gengar Sludge Wave vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Gengar: 64-75 (24.5 - 28.7%) -- 99.3% chance to 4HKO
Gengar Focus Blast vs. Gengar: 0-0 (0 - 0%) -- aim for the horn next time

2) You outspeed and attack
252 SpA Gengar Shadow Ball vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Gengar: 332-392 (127.2 - 150.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 SpA Gengar Sludge Wave vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Gengar: 49-58 (18.7 - 22.2%) -- possible 5HKO

Tyranitar @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Pursuit
- Crunch
- Stone Edge
- Earthquake

Scarf Tyranitar makes a great check to Gengar as it can come in on 3 of it's moves (not Focus Blast) and revenge kill it with Crunch. But that's not all, it can even Pursuit Trap it, to remove Gengar for the rest of the match.

What Gengar can do:

Come in on:
252 SpA Life Orb Gengar Shadow Ball vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Tyranitar in Sand: 57-68 (16.7 - 19.9%) -- guaranteed 6HKO
252 SpA Life Orb Gengar Sludge Wave vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Tyranitar in Sand: 66-79 (19.3 - 23.1%) -- possible 5HKO
Taunt

Don't come in on:
252 SpA Life Orb Gengar Focus Blast vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Tyranitar in Sand: 458-541 (134.3 - 158.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO

What Tyranitar can do:

If Gengar comes in with Stealth Rocks being around, Tyranitar always kills Gengar after one LO recoil and sand damage with a non boosted Pursuit:
252 Atk Tyranitar Pursuit vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Gengar: 204-242 (78.1 - 92.7%) -- 31.3% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock

If you want to play save and Gengar doesn't come in on Stealth Rocks:
252 Atk Tyranitar Crunch vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Gengar: 408-480 (156.3 - 183.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO

That's not even close to a Check tbh. The last thing I would ever do is switch Latias into Gengar and that Shadow Ball calc is preeeetty close to a KO. That's a KO with Stealth Rock damage anyways and a clean 2HKO with Sludge Wave on that particular set. Unless they're desperate they're not going for the speed tie and this is assuming they are unaware you have a scarf on your Latias in the first place.
