Video Game Speed Runs, Challenges, etc.

Anyone here done a speed run for a game or any difficult challenge for a game?

I can be proud to say I have done:

1% run in Metroid Fusion - Hard to Insane
Lowest % in Metroid Prime: Hunters - Medium to Hard
Lowest Level Challenge: Paper Mario 64 - Hard
TAS for Pokemon Sapphire (it was sloppy, so I am redoing it).

**Note My times for those challenges SUCKED, so don't think I'm trying to brag.

I just did the Paper Mario One, and boy was it painful (try beating Bowser (his final form) with 15 HP and 15 FP).

They are always fun to do though, especially if you have beaten said game a million times.

I do speedruns on PD intermittently; nothing near record-holding, but I'm not too shabby at it.

Heh, I remember watching the sub-five hour LOZ:OOT run and thinking it looked easy (I mean, the guy _was_ a terrible shot with the bow), then trying it and failing miserably. :s

ive done true llg's on ffv (well the harder version, 2/2/2/3 as levels not 1/1/1/4) and on smrpg

smrpg was tough, ffv was excrutiating at times

well, I've tied the best record I've seen on the internet for one of the levels on world five of New Super Mario Bros. I also am pretty good at speed running the entire NSMB game, with the portals from level one to five and five to eight, but that is about the only game I've ever tried.

The Metroid games are probably my favorite Speed Run games. There's really so much potential for speed running in the whole concept and level design of the games. I've never done a whole run myself but I've watched quite a few videos and tried out some tricks in most of the games, especially Metroid Prime and Metroid Zero Mission.

oh man, i love watching super metroid speed runs. they're unbelievably cool. tas super metroid vids are even more ridiculous.

1% run in Metroid Fusion - Hard to Insane
The sad thing is, there's actually a sequence breaker that uses a perfectly-timed shinespark to skip that missile tank, but it requires that you perform the shinespark mere frames before it runs out. See m2k2 for details. Anyway, grats on the 1%, was the Nightmare fun?

I did a 10% hard run of Metroid Zero Mission on hard, using a Super Missile expansion as the tenth percent (Screw attack would have made Mother Brain a LOT easier, but the zebetites almost impossible). (I did pick up the Varia suit, although it adds a percent regardless of whether you pick it up or not.) The thing is, a 9% completition is possible in the PAL version of the game (the NTSC version has a missile block near the end that regenerates, forcing you to stock at least three missiles to progress). However, getting my hands on a European version would be far easier than actually getting past those zebetites, so it's something that I prefer to keep in my mind.

I've always wanted to take the TAS route in a Zelda 5 run; I really like the idea of skipping the first three temples. Although I have managed to successfully bomb jump onto the boarder surrounding the graveyard, I haven't managed to actually make my way to the Shadow Temple's entrance. I did do a pseudo-speed run once mimicking TSA's 4:57 route, but my time was over 6 hours. (I wasted a lot of time trying to get through the desert without the Lens of Truth, I probably should have practiced this portion of the run before actually trying to execute it.)

I tried doing a speed run of Golden Sun one time, and I have come to the conclusion that Saturos is the hardest boss speed-run boss in RPG history. If you fight zero randbats, your party level is 7, with Mia at level 10. Probably the hardest part is that you have no Granite, and I've actually toyed with the idea of detouring to Kolima to get it. My best time for beating Saturos is over 35 minutes, and with luck, Granite could conceivably shave fifteen minutes off that time. After seeing how Toxic Lapras performed, I'm beginning to think that using Granite would be acceptable for a recorded speed run. Still, the save mechanics make a recorded run an absolute nightmare, and would probably result in a run with at least sixty segments.

Back when I had the GBA Final Fantasy remake, I did a "perfect stats" run (reaching class promotion at level 11), although doing so really had no impact on my maximum stat potential since an infinite number of stat-raising items are available after completing the game. Still, it was fun (if a bit aggravating at times), and developed an attachment to Red Mages during that run that has greatly affected the way I read 8-bit theatre. I also did a run using only Black Mages, although that's really quite easy since the GBA version provides you with an actual MP stat.

I have the GBA version of Final Fantasy VI, and I've been toying with the idea of a "perfect" Celes/Edgar/Setzer run, although doing so would eat up a colossal amount of time. Still, I have three weeks of summer left before I start class again, and virtually no obligations until then...

Dragon Quest III...with just a hero. I got to the Dark World but Zoma is waaay too much. That was like 2 years ago and I haven't really tried to finish it since.

I enjoy watching speedruns of games I know, unfortunately that is pretty limited. However, I've been pondering about doing a Fire Emblem 6 speedrun, which is kinda hard. SpeedDemosArchive won't accept it because I don't have the real game (and they don't like emulators) but it'd be fun anyway.

I've heard, but I don't have the game anymore...:(

Nightmare was painful. Well...not really painful, but REALLY, REALLY long. I remember doing loops and loops waiting for it to stop moving so I could shoot it. I found a quick way to destroy the gravity machine. The Spider Boss and Ridley-X were prob the other hard ones for me (Spider Boss, annoying, and Ridley-X, huge and little room to manuever).

The only challenge I can say I've done is complete Fire Red and Emerald without going into a Pokemon centre. That was kinda fun :-)

ecne I remember I tried that challenge once before he had made that guide and got stuck at the part where you have to jump over the gerudo gate as a kid and gave up. I'm watching the videos right now though.

Most of the speed runs I end up doing are for snes games like megaman or something, but even then it is something like beat megaman x1 in a day or something.

The hardest thing I have done is the ramza only challenge in FFT.

I beat the Xbox game Black in 1 hr4 mins on Easy. Can't record it though. I love watching the Mario Speedruns, or GE/PD.

Last summer, a bunch of Smogoners tried the "Initial Equipment" challenge in FF7. To my knowledge, nobody actually finished because most lost interest after a few weeks. Here is the thread. I can't remember how far I got, I'll have to boot it up later today and find out.

I've decided to "try" a No Future game on Legend of Mana, one of my favourite RPGs. It makes every enemy level 99 and though you should start around level 50-60 (IIRC) as it's like a Chrono Trigger New Game+, it's still pretty hard, if not impossible. I once tried beating a Rabbit in this mode, it took my a lot of tries : (

I just realized HOW MANY challenges there are for FF7... dear god...
-low level
-initial equip
-no materia
-no items
-no inns
-solo character
-enemy skill only
-commands only
-any combination of 3-4 of the above

Crazy... None of them really sound "fun" to me though... Just limiting and frustrating (enemy skill sounds ok actually). I would personally like to play through it again with a "class system" of sorts, like assigning certain materia to certain characters and banning stuff like ultimate weapons and KotR, maybe limiting levels a little bit, to make it more challenging. Like say Barret could be a Paladin, so he'd get Materia like Cover, Cure, Counter, Life, etc. and accessories to boost defense/survivability, etc.

I am not a masochist when it comes to playing games.

I dont recall ever trying to beat a game with a very difficult challenging theme. I really dont have that kind of patience.

Closest I could think is beating FE games with the suckiest characters available, but thats usually after I beat it "normally" with the others.

hahahahaha

just a little anecdote, i remember seeing a HUGE (and really difficult) ff7 challenge awhile back and the acronym was like 20 characters long, so like, initial equipment, no materia, etc etc. anyways i remember part of it being 'ncwad' which stood for 'no crying when aeris dies'
