Media Videogame Thread

This post is a post that is going to keep me accountable in actually finishing the games that I buy before I buy new ones because that keeps happening. I love RPGs (and there are so many good ones on Switch/Switch 2!) but often times I have trouble finishing them. So I present to you:

The phoopes RPG backlog

Started but haven’t finished:
NieR Automata
Super Mario RPG
Persona 4 Golden
Persona 5 Royal
Xenoblade Chronicles (Definitive Edition)
Unicorn Overlord
Triangle Strategy
Live-A-Live
Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake
Final Fantasy VI
Bravely Default Flying Fairy
Fire Emblem Three Houses DLC
Fire Emblem Engage DLC

Own but haven’t touched yet:
Dragon Quest I+II HD-2D Remake
Octopath Traveler
Final Fantasy I
Final Fantasy II
Final Fantasy III
Final Fantasy IV
Final Fantasy V
Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door
Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch
Tales of Vesperia
Sea of Stars DLC

Plan on getting for sure:
Dragon Quest VII Reimagined
Persona 3 Reload
Pokémon Legends Z-A
Fire Emblem Path of Radiance (Switch 2 VC)
Fire Emblem Fortune’s Weave
Mario and Luigi: Brothership

Plan on getting assuming I like the other game(s) in the series:
Xenoblade Chronicles X (Definitive Edition)
Xenoblade Chronicles 2
Xenoblade Chronicles 3
Octopath Traveler II
Octopath Traveler 0
SMT V: Vengeance
SMT III: Nocturne HD Remaster
Final Fantasy VII HD Remake whatever it’s called
Maybe others I’m not thinking of

Current “plan” I guess is to start with DQ3 so I can play DQ1+2 before DQ7 comes out in early February. After that idk quite yet because that’s already four games, one of which isn’t even out yet hahaha. But I am absolutely in a Dragon Quest mood and would like to play 7 when it releases so I don’t get spoiled on anything (I know 7 the original has been out for years but I haven’t seen any spoilers really and apparently 7 reimagined is going to be very different anyway).

I should say: all the ones I’ve started but haven’t finished yet I’ve actually really liked or even loved with the exception of NieR (because I tried the prologue many times and I suuuucked and kept dying and there’s no checkpoints in the prologue apparently). What happens is that I go through periods of free time where I play a lot and then periods of very busy IRL so I set the game down and then just don’t pick it back up oops.

So yeah again, the purpose of this post is to keep myself accountable and (mostly) prevent myself from buying new games without playing the ones I already own. Because I know for sure there’ll be stuff like Fortune’s Weave that I buy and play immediately which will just add to the backlog lol. If anyone has any recommendations for what games to prioritize after I play those DQ games let me know!

^those bastards put SMT V: Vengeance Digital Deluxe Edition on sale for $28 from its normal $70 pricetag

I LOVED Persona 3 Portable (and actually finished it!). I played like 2 hours of Persona 4 Golden before putting it down and it was fine but too early to really tell. I put like 30 hours into Persona 5 Royal and LOVED it before putting it down oops. Based off that, do we think I'm going to like SMT V? If so I'll just shell out for it now because this is apparently an all-time low price for it (on Switch anyway).

Anyone else playing Valve's Deadlock? You just need a Steam account and a friend to send you an invite.

I think it's the only good MOBA game now, but it is still very unapologetically a tryhard MOBA. There's a tryhard movement-heavy shooter layered on top of all of that and it's really fun to waste time in.

I managed to beat my first B Side level today after some practice (currently have 5.1 hrs in Celeste on steam) and while I did beat all the A sides on my switch copy of the game, I finally managed to beat my first B side and I managed to do it on keyboard. 1:31:15.904 and 641 deaths to beat it, but my time for doing chapter 3 A side for the first time was probably comparable and like I think I am getting better. Just proud about this and felt like I should share before I inevitably end up going at it again and faster than I did this time.

congrats! the b-sides do have a pretty steep difficulty spike esp the rooms at the start of each subchapter.
fortunately the b-sides are roughly as difficult as each other so you should be fine

honestly 3b isn't even that bad. 5b is the one you should be worried about ngl
probably true as will be 6B as someone I know called out 6B as rather difficult, but 3B scares me as 3A was like a real challenge for me my first playthrough, though I can do it decently well at this point (give or take a bit)

Some gaming hot takes:

I have 0 hype for GTA 6. While I loved San Andreas, and had fun with 4 and 5, from what I've seen 6 doesn't really seem to be adding much new to the formula. It will make a lot of money (heard stories of fathers trying to conceive their baby so they can have paternity leave when it comes out, just use your vacation days), but nothing about it really floats my boat.

I'm sick of so many most non-Nintendo games going for a photo realistic artstyle. I haven't been impressed by that in over a decade, and it just makes all the releases bleed together into one samey mass.

I'd like to see Final Fantasy go back to being turn based. I played 16, and while it was fun, it didn't really feel like a Final Fantasy game. It felt more like Asura's Wrath or Devil May Cry. Nothing against those games, but if I want to play Asura's Wrath or Devil May Cry...I'll play Asura's Wrath or Devil May Cry. Give me Black Mages, White Mages, give me a weird fusion of science fiction and sword and sorcery, give me 4 treasures representing the elements. Give me turn based combat. Sea of Stars, Undertale, Persona 5, Fire Emblem Engage, all those games got good reviews and sold well, so clearly people still buy them.

if you like turn based games and science fiction mixed with magic you should try library of ruina
worth noting this game is incredibly woke if thats more or less of a selling point for you
like not "diversity for a quota" woke but more of a "severe criticism of capitalism specifically aimed at south korea" woke
game does have hella gays though

2B done for the first time as well today with a lot of time spent on the last screen because I just had trouble getting it, but I did it in 2:41:51.114 with 666 deaths. Just the fact I managed to do it is a sign of me improving as a player.

Been playing Fallout: New Vegas.

Good game! Been going through the DLC in release order before I finish up the Wild Card route. Too bad Dead Money sucks major ass.

I now eat my words, thinking there would be no chance at another mega man game.
Eating-words-meme-3.jpg

But about a month ago, I've been coming to terms on this, and I've felt that Mega Man doesn't need another entry because it has so many games. Would I really lose much if the Mega Man series died? Not really. I kinda was dooming for no reason.

It's been a hot minute since I posted in this thread but I finally got around to finishing "Visions of Mana." A little late to the party as usual but still wanted to share my thoughts on the game.

The Good: Part of the good is merely the fact that we saw a new Mana game in modern times. Visually speaking I think the game looked amazing; Full of color and stuff. It had a pretty fun "job class" system, especially towards the later stages of the game once you unlock every element. Elements are tied to unique attack and abilities, but only one party member can be equipped with an element at a time, so you're really forced to be creative with what you use. Mana games typically have flat writing and while it wasn't the greatest writing I've ever seen, I enjoyed some of the main plot themes for the most part. I think the main draw to mana games is that they're lighthearted and rather easy to jump into and play and this game was no different.

The Bad: I don't have a whole lot of complaints. I think the AI controlled party members were a little stupid. When boss attacks are telegraphed by big red circles on the ground, there really shouldn't be a situation where your party is standing there getting hit when you are spamming dodge, nowhere near the attack lol. I also found it silly how when traversing the overworld the ai will fall into poison swamps and constantly poison themselves, while you avoid any environmental hazards. My biggest complaint is something that plagues modern jrpgs in general. There are a number of side quests in the game that don't have interesting writing to them, interesting requests, or even interesting rewards. I seriously wish jrpgs would stop with this pointless padding.

Final Thoughts:

I didn't hate this game but I didn't love it. I think it kinda ran on too long when you factor in all the pointless quests which I stopped doing towards the end. I clocked out at just over 80 hours and that isn't including post game content. I think a game like Trials of Mana is a better example of how long a Mana game should run for. Hard Mode felt like a proper difficulty for the game and wasn't excessively hard. Overall I would only recommend this if you really wanted a modern Mana experience, but even then I'd probably direct you to the Trials of Mana remake before this.

Overall Rating: B

yea ch3 does that lol. its a steep difficulty spike no matter what.
Fortunately for you 4B only has like 2 or 3 hard rooms the rest of it is barely a step up from 7A
I'll try it soon enough I think. Redid 2B and it took like 23 minutes because once you get the new tech with the star blocks down it becomes generally a lot easier I feel. Might try redoing 3B to work on my skill because 7B will end up being a bit of a challenge I would think.

BILLY MAYS HERE WITH ANOTHER GARBAGE HOT TAKE

so video game console sales numbers were fucked during the holiday season. Many people will say that this is due to heightened cost of living, which is 100% true, however, during the 2008 recession and during the COVID recession, Nintendo was making massive fucking cash money, simply by having a relatively affordable console with relatively inexpensive games on sale

now Nintendo has a massive luxury priced console out with the most expensive games available and it didn't do well at all during the holiday season

I think if Nintendo priced the Switch 2 more reasonably and didn't break the 60 dollar price tag for games, they could've profited from the very bad economic situation right now. As it seems, I think Valve may have a shot at coming out well. Indie games are bigger than ever and most can be run on any hardware, so PC gaming has become overall relatively accessible to regular people. But I have no idea if that is any true, just something that seems reasonable to me personally

part of the issue is that nintendo's target demographic is still kids, and it was pretty justifiable to parents to buy their kid a 200 dollar doohickey and a 40 dollar game to keep them busy. Now that said doohickey is 600 dollars and the game is 70 dollars, and they already have a phone or a tablet or something, it's much harder to justify.

The obvious solution? It's time for nintendo to infiltrate the mobile device market.

I mean they already tried. Pokemon Go is still making massive money, but Nintendo has admitted that they don't get a lot of money from that. There's also Mario Run and that Pikmin thing. I think big developers don't really profit from the mobile market, from the late 2000s to the mid 2010s, mobile ports and mobile games from big franchises were very common, but I guess they didn't make a lot of money through that, so they stopped

I think Nintendo just needs to become affordable again. Maybe they can release a Switch 2 lite that's 250-300 dollars and go back to the 60 dollar price tag. The 80 dollars didn't pay off anyway, MKW sold through the bundle and is already being outsold week by week by MK8D. Bananza sold alright but not great, despite being one of the two first party games and being on a console with a big installation base

I wonder where they'll go to. The approach of becoming multimedia seems good on the surface, a ton of Mario merch was sold through the Mario movie, but there needs to be a lot of partners with that approach that all take a slice of the pie. Illumination and cinemas for the movies, Universal for Nintendo World, the merch producers and retailers for the merchandise. Nintendo made a lot of money independent from any partners by having their own console with first party exclusives, they don't have much of that privilege anymore

btw I just remembered that Prime 4 came out

is anyone else surprised by how absolutely zero impact was made by this game?

after the reveal of the annoying npc, that was kinda it. I don't remember anyone talking about it when it released beyond some fans that were very disappointing by it, and now all I see is the occasional review or essay on why the game was bad

people wanted it for 7 years and all that excitement went nowhere. Dread had more of an impact and that was a 2D Metroid with a few months of leadup
