[Overview]

Walrein can function without hail the support, but of Snover in the never used tier although it must run an entirely different set. to compensate. With Walrein's ice typing comes some weaknesses, Walrein's typing and Thick Fat give it weaknesses to Stealth Rock and Fighting-type attacks and. It's typing has many strengths too, the good defensive water type makes up for the fire weakness, along with Thick Fat which causes Walrein to resistances to both Ice- and Fire-type attacks, making it a very solid special wall. Walrein's bulk is impressive; with 110 / 90 / 90 defenses, it can take hits and fire back with a base 95 Special Attack stat.(no space between period and
)

[SET COMMENTS]

Walrein is amazing (powerful implies offensive capability while the rest of the sentence discusses Walrein's defensive capabilities.) because it can switch into any Choice Specs-boosted Ice-, Fire- or Water-type attack, even a Choice Specs attack and be fine. Because of Thick Fat, Walrein has essentially an octuple resistance to Ice-type attacks, making it a great choice to counter hail teams as Ice-types cannot be frozen and are not damaged by hail. Encore is a great supporting move, and it functions well on Walrein. Encoring the opponent into a stat boosting move can give you time to switch out and set up, changing the momentum of the battle; thus, Encore forces the opponent to use an unboosted attack or let you prepare a sweep with a teammate. Usually it forces a switch, allowing you to Toxic another Pokemon. Toxic is essential for stalling so it is necessary for a wall such as Walrein. Depending on what coverage is needed for the team, either Surf or Ice Beam can be used. Surf hits Fire-types that Walrein can so easily switch into and also hits Rock-types and Ground-types that can threaten it with super effective Rock-type attacks. Ice Beam hits Flying-types hard, namely Alataria and Swellow, but be careful around them because unless you can predict a switch in, Swellow can KO you with Facade if you are low enough on health. Protect racks up Toxic damage whereas Roar can be used in conjunction with entry hazards to phaze and deal a little damage.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Walrein works best as a special wall because its resistances are commonly seen as special attacks, but it can run a physically defensive set if necessary. The EVs for this set maximize it's special bulk. Something Walrein has over Slowking is its neutrality to Bug-, Ghost- and Dark-type moves, so the special defensive spread gives Walrein its niche. Walrein likes having supporting teammates. Using a rapid spinner to rid the field of Stealth Rock is very helpful, but with the few choices available it may be hard to consistently remove hazards. Since it is so hard for Walrein to to tolerate hazards, something to remove the opponent's Ghost-type spin blocker could be useful if you do decide to have a Rapid Spin user. Another good teammate is Anything that resists Fighting-and Rock-type attacks makes a good teammate, such as Exeggutor, who can also take Grass-type attacks aimed at Walrein, and a Rock-type resist like Throh, who can tank Fighting-type hits as well, as both types are powerful offensively and are super effective against Walrein.

[Other Options]

Walrein has some other unique options that may be viable. Super Fang together with Brine allows Walrein to hit a little harder than usual, but takes up two move slots. Although Super Fang can be used alone, Walrein has enough Special Attack to use STAB moves while providing coverage for the team. A physical Curse set is usable and probably one of the better other options Walrein has. If you really need Walrein to function on it's own, Icy Rock can be used with Hail and Ice Body, but eight turns of hail really isn't enough to work with and even with other stalling support Ice Body isn't that effective.

[Checks & Counters]

It can be hard for Walrein to be effective sometimes due to the widespread use of Stealth Rock and the power of Fighting types. If you can get a Fighting-type behind a Substitute before Walrein can Encore you, it should be easy to force it to switch out with the threat ofClose Combat from powerful Pokemon, such as Sawk. Poison-types who are immune to Toxic and can Toxic Walrein, hampering its walling capabilities. As mentioned before, Walrein is easily worn down with Stealth Rock, so if you can continue to force it to switch, Walrein will be much less effective. Finally Taunt ruins many of the defensive sets, usually forcing Walrein to switch so you can set up a Substitute or use a boosting move .

[Dream World]

Oblivious is useless in competitive battling as Attract is not used and few viable Pokemon have Cute Charm.
