I think at the end of the day we're just arguing the smogon mindset vs. a more casual mindset (eg. Marriland?).
Personally, I think the smogon mindset and having fun is one in the same. At least for me. I don't think a lot of players realize how much fun it is devising strategies and trying to stay on the cutting edge. The metagame evolves, and when you're lucky enough to find new strategies from top players, it really is pretty cool.
Of course, one can only truly appreciate the genius of such situations/strategies if you have a good understanding of the metagame yourself. Believe me, that goes beyond what pokes are commonly used and what pokes counter them.
The beauty and stucture of team making/strategy is a deep well to dive into, and you can only appreciate a big chunck of it through putting yourself in that mindset.
