Overview
########

Whirlipede is a great Pokemon that acts as a suicide lead on offensive Spike-stacking teams, but it has a lot of competition from other Spikes setters in the tier. Having access to both Toxic Spikes and Endeavor makes it a really good alternative to them and brings a lot of utility to a team already, but with Speed Boost, Whirlipede becomes the fastest entry hazard setter in the tier, preferred over Roselia on fast-paced offensive teams that want Spikes on the field as soon as possible. However, it has pretty bad base stats apart from Defense, making it unviable on defensively oriented teams. It also has to rely on its last moveslot to do damage, which will be taken up by Endeavor most of the time, which gives Whirlipede more utility than consistent damage, limiting its effectiveness.

nature: Jolly

Moves
========

Spikes and Toxic Spikes are mandatory on Whirlipede and every Spikes-stacking team, as they serve to pressure the enemy team by putting some damage on foes every time they switch in. Protect lets Whirlipede get a Speed Boost safely and then proceed to quickly set up layers of Spikes and Toxic Spikes. Endeavor is the best damaging move that Whirlipede can use, letting it bring an enemy to 1 HP if played well with Speed boost and Focus Sash.

Set Details
========

Maximum Speed and Defense investment with a Jolly nature allows Whirlipede to set up Spikes as soon as possible and to stay alive as long as possible against physical attackers, especially against Rock Blast users, and also lets it deal more damage with Endeavor if it can't get to 1 HP. Speed Boost is one of the reasons why Whirlipede is used, as it makes it the fastest Spikes setter in the tier after it gets some boosts. Focus Sash lets Whirlipede take any hit without being OHKOed and set up more entry hazards or use Endeavor to take an enemy to 1 HP.

Usage Tips
========

Whirlipede's potential as a suicide lead can only be fully used in the early stages of a game. Laying down layers of Spikes and taking one of the opponent's Pokemon down to 1 HP from the start is really easy thanks to Endeavor and Focus Sash, so try to use this tactic as much as you can when using Whirlipede, but take care against Pokemon with Rock Blast, Knock Off, or status moves, as well as Ghost-types, as they can nullify your strategy most of the time. Always look to the opponent's team when you decide what you want to set up on the field first; for example, if the opponent has a Poison-type, you will want to set up your Spikes before Toxic Spikes, so that they will not be removed. Be careful against setup sweepers, especially if they carry Substitute, as Whirlipede's weak against them, having next to zero offensive presence. Whirlipede also relies a lot on using Protect on the first turn to set up layers of Spikes when against decently fast Taunt users and popular Choice Scarf users such as Mr. Mime and Haunter, which outspeed it at +2 but not at +3. Because Whirlipede is pretty slow without boosts, Protect should also used when Whirlipede is at 1 HP to gain another Speed boost after setting up a layer of Spikes, which allows it to become faster than every Taunt user and also scout if the opponent switches into a Ghost-type predicting your Endeavor. When Whirlipede is at 1 HP, also consider placing another layer of Spikes, if you feel you really need it and the opponent doesn't have a reliable way to get rid of them, because they could also switch out to a Ghost-type, making Endeavor useless.

Team Options
========

Whirlipede's strategy is supported well by a Stealth Rock setter such as Carracosta or Probopass to keep up the pressure on the opponent's team when against Pokemon with immunities to Ground and Poison. Defiant users such as Pawniard and Purugly are appreciated when using Whirlipede to pressure or even KO the enemy's Defog user while gaining a +2 Attack boost, which is always appreciated. Spinblockers such as Misdreavus and Haunter are also good teammates, as they can prevent your Spikes from being removed by the enemy spinner most of the time. Poliwrath can be a good teammate because it effectively checks or even counters Rock- and Fire-types and can also make good use of Whirlipede's entry hazards to clean up the enemy team if using the Swift Swim set. Whirlipede appreciates Pokemon such as Taunt + Will-O-Wisp Misdreavus or Rotom-F, which can stall out walls such as Lickilicky, Gourgeist-XL, and Tangela. Sweepers such as Sneasel and Dodrio enjoy Spikes support to weaken their counters.

Other Options
########

Whirlipede can run a more defensive set with Eviolite and Poison Jab if you want it to be a more durable entry hazard setter and have a reliable source of damage, even if it is weak. Whirlipede is also a decent user of Toxic, which can be used to pressure Ghost-types, Defoggers, or spinners with its boosted Speed, making it faster than some Taunt users and able to poison them.

Checks & Counters
########

**Rock-types**: Rock-type leads such as Golem, Armaldo, and Barbaracle can easily KO Whirlipede right off the bat, especially if they carry Rock Blast, which makes its Focus Sash useless.

**Fire-types**: Fire-types such as Ninetales, Flareon, Torkoal, Rapidash, and Heatmor don't really appreciate switching in on entry hazards but can still KO or set up on Whirlipede without any fear, breaking its Focus Sash with Will-O-Wisp or any weak move.

**Ghost-types**: Levitating Ghost-types such as Haunter and Misdreavus don't take any damage from Spikes and can just switch in on Whirlipede as they please because they are also immune to Endeavor and take next to no damage from Poison Jab.

**Setup Sweepers**: Setup Sweepers such as Leafeon and Simipour are a big threat to Whirlipede, as it can't really pressure them, having little to no damage output, especially if they carry Substitute, putting your whole team in a dangerous position.

**Entry Hazard Control**: Pokemon that can remove entry hazards, such as Togetic and Armaldo, can mess up Whirlipede's entire strategy if it's not supported well.

**Priority Users**: Strong priority users such as Basculin and Carracosta can limit Whirlipede's utility as they will let it place a maximum of one layer of Spikes before KOing it, not even letting it set up another one or use Endeavor.

**Taunt Users**: Taunt users such as Simipour and Dodrio can take away almost all of Whirlipede's utility, being faster even if it's at +1 Speed and forcing it to switch, dealing a lot of damage to the rest of your team.

Wait, isn't the offensive move supposed to be Endeavor? Poison Jab doesn't seem all that useful to me, and should probably be in Moves at best, if not OO.

i run endeavor with max speed and nothing else; i don't really think there's a reason for pjab? esp. considering ghosts take nothing from it anyway.

fixed, thanks from the advices, switched the sets, also added some points in TO and Checks&Counters.

ready for qc check imo

I'll give this a check after I get back from school (other QC members feel free to check in the meantime), but 252 Defense is better than 252 HP on Whirlipede so that Endeavor does more damage if you can't get down to your sash.

This is very good, especcially for a first analysis, Raiza.

In the overview, you say its a 'staple on offensive spikestacking teams', i dont think thats true as they can use dwebble/rose. You should also say what it's niche is over other spikes leads, ie dwebble, which is t spikes.

I wouldnt talk about circle throw poliwrath, as that doesnt really have much of a place on offensive spike stacking teams, maybe talk about pokes like sub split rotom who enjoy stalling out pokes like lickilicky

UT you should talk a bit more about what hazards you want, ie expand on the point, like if the opp has a roselia you might want spikes>tspikes. Also talk about when you should protect, and if you are at 1hp, whether an extra layer of hazards are needed

Toxic in oo, it pressure ghosts as well as spinners/defogers

In oo mention simipour and dodrios as a taunt users, as they both outspeed whirlipede after a boost

dwebble is total ass and setup fodder, whirlipede can at least endeavor setup sweepers to put them in priority range so dont mention it in overview, i support what anty said though

QCing this at school because I'm pro like that

Mention in the overview when to Protect turn 1 and when not to (against missy, monferno, purugly, etc, but also against things like scarf tauros, which outspeeds you at +2 but not at +3, so protecting first turn gives you 2 layers instead of 1)

I feel like priority users should be in c&c, as they limit you to only one layer.

That's about it. Like Anty said this is excellent for a first analysis Raiza., just tag me when you've implemented this stuff and I will stamp.

I think this is pretty good, nice job. Only qualm is in team options there are probably better stuff to list than Taunt Wisp Missy and SubSplit Rotom because they don't need Spikes that much to beat walls. You could talk about stuff like Sneasel and Dodrio whose counters are worn down much more by Spikes. If the reason you put SubSplit Rotom-F is that it grabs a KO with the help of Spikes then put that KO in, otherwise I feel other Rotom-F are better examples to put because of Volt Switch.

Nice job, change that bit and send to GP :)

Poliwrath can be a good teammate since because it effectively checks or even counters Rock- and Fire-types and can also make good use of Whirlipede's entry hazards to clean up the enemy team if using the Swift Swim set. Whirlipede appreciates Pokemon such as Taunt + Will-O-Wisp Misdreavus or Rotom-F, which can stall out walls such as Lickilicky, Gourgeist-XL, (AC) and Tangela.

########

**Rock-types**: Rock-types leads such as Golem, Armaldo, and Barbaracle can easily switch in and KO Whirlipede right off the bat, especially if they carry Rock Blast, which makes its Focus Sash useless.

**Fire-types**: Fire-types such as Ninetales, Flareon, Torkoal, Rapidash, and Heatmor don't really appreciate switching in on entry hazards but can still KO or set up on Whirlipede without any fear, breaking its Focus Sash with Will-O-Wisp or a not very effective any weak move.

**Ghost-types**: Levitating Ghost-types such as Haunter and Misdreavus don't take any damage from Spikes and can just switch in on Whirlipede as they please because they are also immune to Endeavor and take near next to no damage from Poison Jab.

Overview
########

Whirlipede is a great Pokemon that acts as a suicide lead and sees usage on offensive Spike-stacking teams, but it has a lot of competition from other Spikes setters in the tier. However, it has pretty bad base stats apart from Defense, making it frail and unviable on defensively oriented teams. It also has to rely on its last moveslot to do damage, which will be taken up by Endeavor most of the times, giving it which gives Whirlipede more utility than consistent damage, limiting its effectiveness.

name: Suicide Lead

move 2: Toxic Spikes
move 3: Protect
move 4: Endeavor
ability: Speed Boost
item: Focus Sash
evs: 4 HP / 252 Def / 252 Spe
nature: Jolly

Moves
========

Endeavor is the best damaging move that Whirlipede can use, giving it even more utility and will almost definitely letting it bring an enemy to 1 HP if played well with the Speed Boosts and Focus Sash.

Set Details
========

Maximum Speed and Defense investment with a Jolly nature allows Whirlipede to set up Spikes as soon as possible and to keep it stay alive as long as possible against physical attackers, especially against Rock Blast users, and also lets it deal more damage with Endeavor if it can't get to 1 HP.

Usage Tips
========

Whirlipede's potential as a suicide lead can only be fully used in the early stages of a game. Laying down layers of Spikes and taking one of the opponent's Pokemon down to 1 HP from the start is really easy thanks to Endeavor and Focus Sash, so try to use this tactic as much as you can when using Whirlipede, but take care against Pokemon with Rock Blast, Knock Off, or status moves, (AC) as well as and Ghost-types, as they can nullify your strategy most of the time. Always look to the opponent's team when you decide what you want to set up on the field first; for example, if the opponent has a Poison-type, you will want to set up your Spikes before Toxic Spikes, so that they will not be removed. Be careful against setup sweepers, especially if they carry Substitute, as Whirlipede's weak against them, having near have next to zero offensive presence. Whirlipede also relies a lot on using Protect on the first turn to set up layers of Spikes when against decently fast Taunt users and popular Choice Scarf users such as Tauros, Mr. Mime, and Haunter, which outspeed it at +2 Speed, but not at +3. When Whirlipede is at 1 HP, also consider placing another layer of Spikes, if you feel you really need it and the opponent doesn't have a reliable way to get rid of them, since because they could also switch out to a Ghost-type, making your Endeavor useless.

Team Options
========
