Who is your personal hero?

We all have that idol that we wish we could be more like. Be it a currently living person, a long dead historical figure, or even a fictional character, everyone can find inspiration in that certain someone. Getting this thing started up:

Thomas O'Malley is the epitome of cool in my book. Equal parts cocky, aloof, and sarcastically bitchy, this cat is my personal inspiration. He's the perfect embodiment of the charming Bohemian. This feline even has the classic half-strut, half-frolic down to a T. I wish I could be that suave...

So who is your personal hero?

Stephen Hawking.

Despite having a horrendously crippling disease, that should've killed him by now, he went on when he could have legitimately given up and went to forge an amazing career in academia. Making revolutionary discoveries about the universe and being one of the most highly respected scientists the world now knows.
Deciding to carry on in the face of such adversity, and going on to achieve everything he wanted to achieve is hugely impressive. When I thought I was going through a hard part in my life, I would think about Stephen Hawking and then realised that I was incredibly lucky to be in perfectly good health, and that If he can carry on, then I certainly could.

In terms of physical struggles, when I was on my DofE expedition, I decided that I was going to think about Doug Scott, who is my friend's dad, who is a famous climber. When he was climbing the Ogre, on the way down one of his ropes snapped and he was smashed into the side of the cliff face he was abseiling down and broke both of his legs. He managed to get all the way down the mountain and back to base camp. This reminded me that everything I've done in my life has been easy.

Actually, Van Gogh is pretty cool. His art is awesome and anyone who has the balls to cut off their earlobe is awesome in my book
 
Yeah, the fact that rodan is advocating genuine responses should be a message.

What Rodan said about his mum is really heartfelt. Deserves at least a modicum of respect
 
my hero(es) (seriously) would probably be...

1. tom sidell creator of the webcomic gunnerkrigg court. being semi involved in the comics industry i can honestly say he is a man who cares about his work. quit his job to work full time on creating beauty and is doing a damn fine job. i was lucky enough to meet him in person and he was incredibly kind talking to an obviously nervous fan.

2. probably harlan ellison or e.e. cummings. incredible writers i have learned a lot from, ellison not so much from his books but from his outlook on the landscape of literature and his insatiable passion to "beat the clock" and hammer his existence into existence. cummings because his poetry makes my heart shudder and i think it is very beautiful and i would one day like to be able to write things that take others to as many places as his work has taken me.

My own main personal hero is Charles Darwin. He was so brave to go against what everyone thought at the time, continuing through sickness of both him and his daughter to come up with a theory that is crucial to our current understanding of the world
 
Moiraine Damodred from the Wheel of Time, nothing can distract her from her cause. I strive to have the same force of will as she does. If perfection can only exist in fiction than perhaps we should look our idols there instead of in reality.

If I had to choose a real person... I wouldn't know who to choose, the illusion is better than the reality. I would probably choose a historical figure who has been given a fictionalized persona, like Gandhi or Lincoln. Perhaps Scheherazade, who uses her gift to both preserve her life and inspire awe in others.

I also idolize individuals whose art is very meaningful for me personally. Patti Smith, Bjork, Kim Deal, Georgia O' Keeffe. They would probably be the most tangible manifestations of the attributes that I strive to cultivate in myself.

Another person who believes the Stephen Hawking story :( If you actually look at what other scientists think he's contributed it isn't a lot.

For me...Tim Minchin has to be my personal hero because he's virtually me with cooler hair and an extra 20 years. Dawkins, Stephen Fry, Roger Federer would have to be up there too
 
Lady Gaga, to me, was always amazing but she was elevated to Goddess status when Born This Way came out, I was able to appreciate her to the fullest. I know this might sound so cliche, but all the songs in the album was one of the main reasons (asides from finding amazing people in my life) I love myself as much as I do today. Her preaching about self empowerment, to love yourself and that's all that really matters really just hits me really hard.

The fact that she is such a genuine person really makes her one of the greatest persons in this world to me - she is always herself, in her interviews, while performing, while as a spokesperson, when on a talk show. She's always genuinely her.

People might hate her because she is different or they think she tries too hard to be different is just ignorant. Look at her performances while she was part of the Stefani Germanatta Band and earlier and you'll realise she has ALWAYS been herself, just now she is able to express it more because she's a superstar.

She was always bullied as a student for being eccentric and more creative than others, and yet she still overcame all of her issues and has become a person who tries to genuinely change the world with her fame, rather than just use it solely for her own benefits - to those who argues otherwise, why else do you think she has one of the most haters of all popstars?

Maria Sharapova is another person who inspires me so much. She's not very well received by fans because she comes off as cold and a bitch, but really she isn't. She's just naturally a more reserved person and doesn't have a large group of friends and she ain't changing for nobody.

Anyways, that's a very small part of why I look up to her so much. Maria has ALWAYS had the mentality everyone should die for - self belief, self confidence but not arrogance. In her early career before her career-threatening shoulder injury, she believed she could be the best in the world, and that belief took her very far.

Before her shoulder injury, she spent 239 consecutive weeks in the top 5. Since then though, her game collapsed and her belief of herself to be the best player in the world has disappeared. She struggled with herself and her game for over 2 years and could not crack the top 10 again. Things looked really dim for her early 2011, but with hard work she eventually reach the top echleon once again, and has been world no. 2 for many months now.

Maria's willpower is one of the greatest the tennis world has seen in the past decade and she continues to inspire me to this day. I believe in her, that one day she'll hoist a grand slam trophy again.

These two people mean the world to me and really show if you believe in yourself, you'll get far in life. I love Maria more than Gaga, but I have to say Gaga has made me appreciate myself and life more than anyone could ever. I could stan for them forever.
