Who plays competitive Street Fighter???

Who plays competitive Street Fighter???

I think the whole scene has died in America, but sometimes I still face-off against my friends with my fiery character, Akuma!!! :happybrain:

If you use Akuma than you are not a competitive player considering he is banned, or at the very least soft banned.

Akuma is only banned in ST, not 3rd Strike or Alpha.

I plan on getting into it when ST HDR comes out.

Yeah, plus with rumors of MARVEL VS CAPCOM 2 being rereleased on PSN/XBLA, how can you resist? (Hopefully it's an arcade perfect port this time around.)

Well, when ST HDR comes out it will have extremely good online netcode (like the stuff modern FPS'es have to hide lag so it's like you're on the same network). I'd suggest buying that if you're interested in getting into it. It's for the Xbox and PSN

Street Fighter 3 3rd Strike has an arcade-perfect port called the Capcom Anniversary Collection, for the Xbox (maybe PS2 as well?). The Xbox 360 can play it.

Not sure about Street Fighter Alpha.

Street Fighter 4 will be released in January 2009. The guys at Capcom have been developing an arcade stick for it; I will like that a lot. I have the Hori Ex 2 arcade stick and while it's awesome for Soul Calibur and Virtua Fighter, I haven't found it very good for Street Fighter. The stick is just too big for fluidly executing the motions.

Yeah, I've played comp. 3S, and I've played high-level CvS2, and some A3/ST. I'm really big on SF, and generally play shotos. Oddly enough, 3S is my best game, and it's the one most unlike all the others. In ST I play Ryu, in A3 I play Akuma and in 3S I play Ken/Mak/Ryu/Hugo. I thoroughly enjoy 3S for its mixup-dominated gameplay - it just generally makes for faster paced, more dynamic (if less strategic) bouts.

Edit: If you're looking for a really good stick, I highly recommend the HRAP (Hori Real Arcade Pro). It's expensive (~$200), but it uses genuine arcade parts, and the parts are replaceable. TBH, if you're playing at high levels, you're either using an HRAP or a custom stick. My older brother has a custom stick because he prefers the dewdrop (american) stick style, for whatever reason, but I'm a huge fan of the jap stick, so I just went with an HRAP. Have not, for a moment, regretted the decision.

I'm not going to shell out $200 for an arcade stick until I'm pretty sure that winning a tournament with it will pay me back. The Capcom guys (including pro-level players) are developing a stick for SF4 that will be reasonably priced...I'll probably try that when it comes out.

Thanks for the recommendation, though. Didn't know about that stick.

First time back to Smogon in a while and a Fighting Games thread is up top? :))) and somehow I knew I'd run into you here man, I'll be getting XBL soon if you play on that bychance.

Personally I could never break my initial plateau in 3S, but yes I agree on the more dynamic nature of it, one of the most entertaining fighters to watch, and you don't have to be gosu to understand what's going on either. Gonna have to get it soon and up my Oro and Hugo game I guess.

I did manage to get into competitve MvC2, back before unfly madness took over the game, after that I couldn't quite keep up, gettin older. I was doing pretty well in the NE and SE Canadian Soul Calibur 2 scene for a bit too, but anyone who plays fighters knows what SC has degraded into :/ It's nice going from MvC2 to SC2 Taki and Yoshi, definitely the fast finger types. Could never RC consistantly enough in CvS2 to get too competitive, but for a while my K Geese/Honda/Sagat served me strangely well in tourneys.

More recently I got VF5 for 360, so I've been trying to pick up my game as well, but lack of online play limits my comp unfortunately. I love it so far, there doesn't seem to be any one character that it broken, per se, though El Blaze can be pretty annoying...

damn I gotta get online play :) people should compile gametags!

edit-kudos to Surgo for MTG, fighters, and Spinal Tap :)

SFIV is out in 2 weeks!

I just got into 3rd Strike a few months ago when I got my PS2, but I've been inspired to take up the art of fighting [games] because of it. Busting a well timed parry is just so damn satisfying; shame they've removed that mechanic. So far I've gotten a ton of Capcom/Namco/SNK titles for my recently purchased console, and had little time to play them, but I'll probably be snagging a 360 or a PS3 some time next week so I can experience the launch like everyone else.

I might go all out and grab a TE Stick. Even if I've never taken a fighting game this seriously before, I can always sell it on ebay later on for mad cash. Actually, I've had trouble finding an EB that's willing to do pre-orders here. Anyone else have any luck?

SFIV comes out in Japan on 12th feb, in USA on 17th and Europe is on the 20th i have a PS3 and SFIV looks really good so i will probably get it.

About the online mode, the servers will be worldwide so you can just challenge anyone across the world.

I'll probably be picking up IV sometime, but probably later when the price goes down a bit. I'm already working on Guilty Gear, so...

I've taken Basics advice about getting a better stick. I still won't be shelling out $200, because I've discovered I can make a pretty good one for under $100. $40 for a pre-made, if minimalistic, case, an older-style Happ joystick and buttons, and then a board. Still have to figure out the board. The problem is I need to be able to hook it up to the 360.

I used to play quite a bit of Third Strike and Alpha 3 as far as straight SF games go. Played MvC2 and CvS2 also, which are related. But it eventually slowed down, just like Guilty Gear because I just can't find many people to play with. Can't wait for SF4 though.

Been playing alot of 3S and HDR lately. Have two TE sticks on preorder just waiting to be picked up =D

I'm not sure if my level is competitive (not many tournaments around, but played against others), but i think i'm good at SF:Alpha 3. I like SF II and all, but i think i kinda suck on it, i get that feeling.

I want to get SF IV, and then i will be able to at least have more opponents to play...

My college had had SF4 since November so I've been playing alot of that too. I'm addicted and can't wait for home so I don't have to spend like 3 dollars a day XD

Smogon SFIV tourney in the near future?

Which leads me to ask, what console do most of you fighting fanatics own? I'm going to go ahead and say...360?

i am so fucking giddy right now

I finally watched some SF4 vids...

Does anyone else really dislike the graphical style of this? I really prefer the cel-shaded style of the older games like ST HDR.

I love streetfigher is my favorite fighting gen next to marvel vs capcom. I think i am pretty good but i suck on the aracde stick. I can only play on platforms.
