Why do we use Bold Blissey?

@ X-Act:
Definitely not trying to defend Havak's original post, but just as well...

Havak's not proposing Calm 252/252 HP/Sp.Def but rather keeping 252 Defense EVs as a standard and using Calm as the nature, an "11 pt" decrease in Defense to give a "31 pt" increase in Sp.Def

The argument that has been correctly made by supporters of the tried and true Bold Nature note that either way, you'll only mitigate proportionally 10% more by a simple nature switch: thus

10-15% range on a Sp.Attack would be turned to 9-13.5
40-50% range would be turned to 44-55%

And thus the same for Bold and the 11 extra defense points that it yields.

This has been explained through many copious posts throughout the thread and it looks like you, X-Act just glanced over the title and started making your post.

But still, it's more math in support of more +Defense over the "awesome" 30 points of Sp.Def (Calm) or, what 18 pts of Sp.Att (Modest) that we're "missing out" on?

The deceiving part about Havak's original post is that it purports that there is only ~5% change in damage done by utilizing a Bold nature over a Calm nature, when (like natures are supposed to do) there is in fact a 1.1 or a .9 multiplier change to damage dealt due to Nature. As such, the original postulate is flawed: Either nature, Calm or Bold, will proportionally decrease damage taken by a factor of .9, be it a 40% original attack turning into 36% (a 4% change) or a 50% move being turned to 45% (a "5% change") or (the magic number) a 53% (2HKO) avg damage move being turned to 48%, in the end it only helps or hinders blissey from Leftovers-Softboiling the damage off.

Yeah, I guess I was thinking of the average damage wrong...

I thought that on average it'd only make a 5%~ difference, as the Nature would give 10%~, so the average would meet in the middle.

Like Dugtrio can do 54-64% on the Neutral Bliss
And 49-58% on the Bold Bliss

Neutral would take 59% on average, Bold would take around 54%, so that's where I was taking the 5% figure from, though it was misleading and I should've taken the correct figures from the min/max damage area.

But now that I see the much larger increase from using Bold, I see why Bold is generally preffered.

Let me support this with some figures:

Adamant max Atk Dugtrio's Earthquake vs Bold max Def/148Hp EV Blissey: 26-31%
vs Calm Blissey: 28-34%
(Actually, it's pretty much a 4HKO, either way.)

CBMence's Dragon Claw vs Bold max Def/148 Hp EV Blissey: 49-57%
vs Calm Blissey: 53-62%
(Calm Bliss is easier to get 2HKO'd.)

Also, with Stealth Rock in play, a max Atk Lucario's Close Combat could OHKO Calm Bliss.

EDIT: Okay, is there something wrong with me or MetalKid's calculator?
Don't forget Blissey recovering with Leftovers though...=)

Sorry, but I don't get why you should go for 252 Defense EVs and then not go for the +Def nature. What's the point? Going for +SpDef would be stupid. And going for +SpAtk won't make Blissey OHKO things with Ice Beam that it normally doesn't. So obviously you go for +Def.

Well, how's this? If you use 215 SpA with Modest Nature, you get 236 SpA (OHKO on 0/0 Sala with Ice Beam), and can save 84 EVs which can be dumped into HP. I think that isn't a bad trade off.

Because then Blissey isnt using its role as a wall to its full potential. The only Blissey that should use special attacks with heavy investment if CMBliss imo.

My experience with a Boltbeaming AromaBliss tells me otherwise. I still use Bold over Modest, but I must say the number of people who get overconfident and send out non-Swampert waters only to get smacked by Thunderbolt is astounding. I especially love it when Gyarados tries to Taunt or DD in its face.
