WiFi UU Tournament Final Warstory - Pablo vs cw333

Introduction - Back in December, the WiFi UU Tournament started. Back then UU was not a definite tier, not a mix up of BL and UU like it is now. The metagame was completely different and filled with stallish teams. Both of us are competent WiFi battlers, despite what people say about WiFi, and using your hard earned Pokemon and being succesful with them is very very rewarding. After a 3 long month wait, the tourney has come to an end. With an amazing finals battle such as this one to end it on a high tone.

First off here are the teams:

Pablo sent out Froslass.
cw333 sent out Claydol.
Froslass used Spikes.
Claydol used Earthquake (48%).

Finally a NON Froslass lead. My Froslass has a Hidden Power Fight, which I don't use anymore, but since it is the only one I have, means I cannot ever outspeed other lead Froslass's. I don't mind Trick or Stealth Rock at all, so I go ahead and set up spikes which are KEY to this team's success. Earthquake does barely half, and I'm not worried about losing Froslass.

Argh =/. Froslass leads are the 1 lead that I have serious trouble with. I'm assuming he's holding Focus Sash so I earthquake to get rid of his sash assuming he'll spike up.

Froslass used Spikes.
Caydol used Stealth Rock.

There's my second layer, which is more than enough for this team.

Now that his sash won't be affecting me anymore I might as well get my rocks up since I don't think I can ko it with earthquake.

Claydol switched out to Rotom.
Froslass used Ice Beam (75%).

I was expecting him to switch out, and I was *this* close to choosing Shadow Ball, which would've made my life ALOT easier. At least I dented Rotom, but I have no safe switchin to it, so I need to sacrifice Froslass.

Gay. I was expecting him to use spikes again and then I'd have a full life rotom to work with..instead he ice beams and I'm down to 25% health.

Rotom used Shadow Ball (52% KO).

I expected Scarf because he switched in on me, but you never can tell if they're Timid + Trick or Modest sweeper. Timid + Trick really ruins me and I can't take any chances.

My rotom is scarfed and I know he isn't expecting it so I get the easy ko with shadow ball.

5-6

Pablo sent out Electrode (who is hurt by Stealth Rock 12%).
Rotom used Shadow Ball (70%).
Electrode used Rain Dance. The rain continues to fall.

I know a Shadow Ball wont OHKO me, but sacrificing Electrode early to set up Rain is not my ideal set up.

I was hoping that maybe I could get a ohko because I had not prepared to face a rain dance team.

Rotom used Shadow Ball (17% KO). The rain continues to fall.

Electrode dies, but I have 6 turns of rain remaining. Since I still can't tell if it's Timid Scarfed or Modest scarfed, I can't know if I will outrun it with my Timid Omastar or not, so I gotta send out my preferred late game sweeper.

I ko his electrode..but its kinda irrelevant since I know he is about to bring in a swift swimmer which is gonna be serious trouble for me.

4-6

Pablo sent out Kabutops (who is hurt by Stealth Rock 12%).
Kabutops used Waterfall (25% KO).
Kabutops lost 10% of health due to Life Orb. The rain continues to fall.

Kabutops does it's job, and that's one less threat to worry about. If Rain isn't up, Scarf Rotom can really tear up my team.

I sacrifice my rotom since I need the extra life orb damage in order to get what I think will be a ko.

4-5

cw333 sent out Hitmonlee (hurt by Spikes 18%).
Hitmonlee used Mach Punch (77%). Hitmonlee lost 10% from life orb.
Kabutops used Waterfall (72% KO).
Life Orb recoil takes down Kabutops as well. The rain continues to fall.

I get lucky here, surviving with 4 HP. This makes me realize how important it is to shoot for perfection, and how I will never ever again tell people their standards are too high, because a 27 HP IV and 31 HP IV can CLEARLY make a difference. The Double KO means neither of us know what is coming up next, but if leads are still alive, people usually send those out, so I decided to use my next Rain sweeper.

I mach punch expecting to get a ohko but I didn't :( so now I'm in serious trouble.AHH! He survives with 1% health left. Fuck you too Hitmonlee.

3-4

Pablo sent out Gorebyss (who is hurt by Stealth Rock 12%).
cw333 sent out Claydol.
Gorebyss used Surf (100% KO).
Gorebyss lost 10% of health due to Life Orb. The rain continues to fall.

Yup, just as I predicted. I get an easy kill, but usually I prefer that my opponent's don't sacrifice these kind of slow walls, as they're great Rain Dance set up bait.

Claydol switches in since I know I'm probably gonna die anyway plus I get to scout his moves, item, and poke.

3-3

cw333 sent out Grumpig (who is hurt by Spikes 18%).
Gorebyss used Surf (90%).
Gorebyss lost 10% of health due to Life Orb.
Grumpig used Psychic (50%). The rain continues to fall.

I run my calcs, and Grumpig has a VERY low chance of survival. Unluckily for me, it does, putting my Rain Dance turns count at 2, but his remaining Pokemon are still 3. This worries me as I keep seeing 'tankish' Pokemon of his, meaning a sweeper could be waiting for just a single opportunity to sweep me or KO Rotom and not let me set up another Rain Dance. The damage leaves me with 48 HP, 2 Life Orb hits exactly.

My grumpig BARELY survives a surf and cannot ko but does a good amount of damage to Gorebyss.

Gorebyss used Ice Beam (7% KO).

That extra turn of Rain lost, plus the damage on Gorebyss really put pressure on Rotom to make sure my final sweeper would be able to KO his last member.

Well my grumpig dies a hero as his damage to gorebyss was crucial.

3-2

cw333 sent out Sharpedo (who is hurt by Spikes 18%).
Gorebyss used Hidden Power Grass (82% KO).
Life Orb recoil takes down Gorebyss as well. Rain Dance ends.

I got sick worried here. A dark type, likely Life Orb'd and my Gorebyss without any chance of survival due to Aqua Jet had me really worried, but luckily he was running an Agility set, which meant my Gorebyss was able to take it down with it's last breath.

Well Sharpedo dies without being able to show his unique agility set. :(, but atleast that annoying Gorebyss is gone. And his rain dance has ended.

2-1

Pablo sent out Rotom (who is hurt by Stealth Rock 12%).
cw333 sent out Venusaur (who is hurt by Spikes 18%).
Venusaur used Substitute (25%).
Rotom used Will-O-Wisp but it failed.

I should've realized something odd was going on here when he saved Venusaur for last. Everytime I saw Venusaur with this team, I thought: shit gotta leave it with as much damage as possible so I can take it down. Right after I clicked Will-O-Wisp, it occurred to me it was neither Scarf'd (or he would've used it earlier for revenge killing), nor a special wall like most of them (because it would've switched in earlier to absorb the Surfs').

After I saw the Substitute animation my heart sank. I had made a CRUCIAL mistake due to my hastyness and simplistic train of thought. I was worried sick he would be a bulky Swords Dancer, as now setting up Rain and getting the Sub down were my main priorities.

I KNOW he's never seen a venusaur set like this so I sub to start up the rape parade.

Venusaur used Swords Dance.
Rotom used Rain Dance.

At this point I'm thinking I've lost the battle due to my hastyness. I run the damage calc on a 6 HP 0/0 Neutral Venusaur, and the Shadow Ball damage output is 28% minimum, which has me breathing new life into the match. This meant that as long as I survived the likely Seed Bomb coming next turn I could leave Venusaur stripped off it's Substitute, allowing Omastar to finish it with a powerful Ice Beam.

Sub,sword dance Venusaur I was expecting a thunderbolt since I thought he was using a rest-talk set but he uses rain dance instead so I know I'm not outta the woods yet.

Venusaur used Swords Dance.
Rotom used Shadow Ball (25%).
Venusaurs Substitute faded. The rain continues to fall.

Yeah, just as I predicted, and him not Subbing/attacking meant I was confident on my win right there.

Argh!! His shadow ball breaks my sub so I can't sword dance comfortably.

Venusaur used Substitute (25%).
Rotom used Shadow Ball (25%).
Venusaurs Substitute faded. The rain continues to fall.

I make sure I don't misclick or something :P, very careful selecting my moves, but I now know I have this in the bag.

I substitute again so I can get into overgrow range and maybe just maybe my sub can survive a shadow ball....nope it can't.

Venusaur used Substitute (25%).
Venusaur's Salac Berry activated.
Rotom used Shadow Ball (25%).
Venusaurs Substitute faded. The rain continues to fall.

Just waiting for the final moments of the battle now. I was just really happy and confident on my win.

Alright so now I'm +4 atk +1 spe and overgrow.

Venusaur used Seed Bomb (88% KO). The rain continues to fall.

As expected, and he hasn't seen my last Pokemon yet, so I feel a bit sorry for him as I was guessing he thought he stood a chance with his +4 Atk and +1 Speed Venusaur.

I know seed bomb will ko and now I just await his final poke.Since I'm +1 spe maybe maybe I can outspeed it.

1-1

Pablo sent out Omastar (who is hurt by Stealth Rock 12%).
Omastar used Ice Beam (7% KO).

Timid Omastar has 458 Speed in the Rain, no chance of survival.

Nope I can't but it was a good game pablo great job using a rain dance team.

1-0 Pablo

Pablo:
I'm more in the mood to write a message instead. First I'd like to thank everyone who traded me Pokes that were vital to my team:

??? (Can't remember who, if it was you PM me to edit) - Who traded me a Froslass.
mingot - For trading me a Modest HP Grass Omastar which gave birth to my Timid HP Electric one.
??? (Can't remember who, if it was you PM me to edit) from an SBP - For trading me the awesome Rain Dance set up Electrode.
Underworld - For trading me his awesome Rain Dance Kabutops.

Thanks to tennisisawesome for holding the tourney and pushing forward to getting it approved.
Thanks to everyone who has congratulated and will congratulate me.
Thanks to Syberia and Ganadalay4 for uploading the battle to YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XNlUGxKXFhA / Syberia's link pending.
Thanks to all of my opponents for the battles.
Props to jigo for being the only person to beat both the finalists.
And finally I guess props to me, cause I kept sucking in previous WiFi tourneys until now :P.

cw333:
Props
To Pablo for using a rain dance team.
To my cw's Venusaur for being a trooper under some terrible conditions.
To Pablo for using froslass as a lead :(.

Slops
To me for not being prepared for a rain dance team
To me for not fixing the froslass lead problem I knew I had.
To Hitmonlee for being an asswipe and getting 77% damage when he needed 78%.[/quote]Alright I edited what I thought were good feel free to edit some more especially in the props/slops part.

We both hope you enjoyed reading this.

While I love wifi-stories, I'm sorry I can't go easy on you guys for that.

You both made the mistake of after-commenting (posting the log first, your thoughts after), leading to a very boring read with the comments being basically just summary of what happened. It was also a bit confusing, and I felt the comments were, furthermore, a bit lacking in substance (especially cw333's).

Standard format should be like this:

Comments: My lead is the typical froslass set, aiming to take advantage of my great speed ghost typing (which gets past facade) and set up some spikes.

<log>
Froslass comes out
Claydol comes out

comment on BRIEFLY on log: claydol lead, *my thoughts on claydol leads*

Digest data, make a decision and explain why I'm making the decision: I'm setting up spikes because claydol can't stop me from doing it.

<log>
Froslass used spikes
Claydol earthquaked

Comment BRIEFLY on log: He earthquaked, makes me glad I didn't go for taunt. Based on this I think he will *insert more reasoning*

Digest data, make a decision and explain why I'm making the decision: I'm going to set up more spikes because he still can't stop me from doing it, and earthquake doesn't do enough damage to ko me.

<log>

you get it? Telling us what you're going to do and why you're going to do it BEFORE the log prevents your comments from just turning into brainless summary of the log. You'll also notice that I put comments in after the pokemon is released and before the action actually happens. This is important because you should comment on your reaction to seeing the pokemon come onto the field, and how it affected your decision on a move.

As much as I love wifi-- I personally know that in this tournament I used an extremely dated team that I just threw out without adjusting for the meta at all because I hate stall and was too lazy to ev/train a new team. Frankly, these two teams as well look a bit "naive" compared to the standard that existed on shoddy preceding the bl conversion.

Congrats on making it to the finals though, there were a lot of battlers and a lot of tough battles (though I'm sure my opponents were pulling their hair out with how lazy I was about it lol). It IS great to see wifi warstories, and all those IV-breeds put to some use. :)

I will only reply to that, and say my team had me in the Top 5 of the Shddy Smogon leaderboard for quite a while. This team exactly EV by EV, move by move, and I even beat the #1 back then: Eo Ut Mortus.

I'll respond to this as well. If everyone uses the standard that existed on shoddy what fun would that be. I don't know this for sure but I feel pretty confident saying that these teams were the 2 most diverse teams in the tournement. I mean come on now I used a SubSalacSword Dance Venusaur xD.

First of all, beating any one player in any one given game is not something I'd pride myself in. Even outside of just hax built into the game, no matter how skilled the player, there's no way he can make the right decisions all the time without information on the enemy's team. When you "predict" wrong, it's not all about skill-- there's a definite luck factor involved. In the "kill if I get it right, die if I get it wrong" battle field that is pokemon, there's definite luck even just in choosing the moves. That's why victory is valued over the long run, and not in individual games-- because any player can beat another given player with relative ease (compared to say something like Chess, or even Wrestling).

Second of all, as inactive as the shoddy ladder was before the BL drop, and as choked and suffocated and unbalanced the metagame was (the walls and support pokemon were freaking BROKEN), I just can't say much for the UU metagame that existed or its ladder. >.>

edit: I do want to make clear though that I personally have battled Pablo a number of times and know that he's a strong battler. I guess I just wasn't all that impressed with this warstory or battle.

Though I know Pablo can defend himself I'd just like to point out that he said he was in the top 5 and he was using the battle against Eo Ut Mortus as an example =/.

Wait, are you saying this is a battle that occured BEFORE BL and UU were combined? Because I'm pretty damn sure that Frosslass and Rotom were both BL.

Wow, kudos to you for passing a Wi-fi battle into Warstory, i think it was hard for you.

Anyways very good battle, i enjoyed it and the last part was very good (Omastar FTW).

There was no prediction involved; it was just set up rain - sweep. sacrifice - stall rain. set up rain - repeat. I guess it kind of reflects on how bland the old UU was. Not an a great warstory, but an interesting battle just because it was a tournament final.
