Windows XP or Windows Vista

Almost every time a video game system or a new version of Windows is released there is always talk about 'XBox 360 has bugs' or 'None of the PS3s at Wal-Mart work'. Basically just rumors that screw around with what people think about it. My friend in Florida complained that the XBox 360 had bugs and the such and when he actually got one he was like "It's awesome".

I am not sure to stay with Windows XP or to go and get the newer Windows Vista, I do not want Windows Vista to be crap like Windows 2000 Millenium Edition was.

People have been saying that Windows Vista is unstable and has not been tested properly, ect. These might be rumors but at the same time they may not.

I want to know if it is safe to stay with Windows XP or actually spend the money and go buy Vista. Most of my games are for the computer and I am not sure weather to get it or not.

Is it worth it to buy Windows Vista and get rid of Windows XP?

For those of you who do have Vista, how well does it actually preform compared to XP and is it worth the money?

Or is Windows Vista a modern day version of Windows 2000 Millenium Edition and shouldn't be bought at all?
 
I don't think Vista has anything very superior to offer over XP, and since everyone who owns a computer is used to XP already, I think it's safe to keep it until Vista gets.. better. People say it's full of glitches and crap too. I dunno, I haven't tried it but I'm not very compelled to.
 
If you're getting a new computer: Go with Vista, it'll be the standard soon enough.
If you aren't: Stick with XP as it's better right now and waiting for Vista to be well-supported may take some time.

The biggest problem is that NVidia (and maybe ATI's?) graphic drivers suck.
 
Vista tends to have to be activated,and you get limited usage(only internet),and crashed and stuff.That's what happened to my sister.I personally hate their format stuff,and looks too..shiny...apple looks much better and it looks like Windows copied Apple.

I'm still stuck with XP until I can make an account on my sister's computer when she heads to college(this is a different sister then the one that crashed),and most stuff doesn't work for Vista yet,so stay with XP.
 
Is a graphics driver the same thing as a graphics card because I have an ATI X1300 Graphics Card and it seems to work really well, are you saying that the card I have won't work as well on Vista?
 
I meant stuff like stuff like CD rom games,non-upgrade Itunes(it now works for vista,if you upgraded to vista and haven't upgraded your iTunes,do so and it will work). I have no idea about the gaphics driver thing,since I'm not good with that complex stuff.
 
Not only have I had no problems with Vista, but I am also in love with DirectX 10 graphics. I recently downloaded bioshock, and I am absolutely drooling over promotional Crysis videos recorded on dx10 systems.

XP supports dx9, which is nice and all...but the hd vids of crysis on dx10 are stunning.
 
Crysis is, like, the main reason for me that Vista is cool.

But I'll stick with XP until a service pack is released for the new kid on the block.
 
God damn, people need to stop making rumors about how bad the system actually is before the actually get it.
Everybody says it's full of glitches and bugs but you all here are saying it is a great system to use, I think the people that do not have Vista just do not want other people to get it then they spread false rumors.

Right now I'm thinking Vista > XP.
 
If you are heavy into gaming on your computer (like playing WoW/Second Life/Halo/whatever), then stick with XP. A lot of the drivers for the top-end video cards (eg. Nvidia) don't have fully-functioning drivers that could make playing the game very annoying.

But of course if you aren't gonna be playing many games then yeah, I'd go with Vista.
 
I use Vista Premium on my computer and everything works fine. Generally it feels like a much more polished product than XP and stuff is much easier to do (even if it treats you like you have the computer literacy of a wombat).

I have loads of old games and they all work fine as well as a few new ones (Oblivion) that will go on integrated graphics.

As for hardware incompatibility a lot of what you hear is rubbish - my 3 year old printer and 4 year old scanner worked with manufacturer downloads and there are loads of free-drivers on the internet.

You have got to watch Vista carefully though because it has a habit of gobbling up your system resources and it's hard disk management is appalling. 98 did a better job of defraging my drive.
 
Someone said it already.. I wouldn't go out of the way to update if you're not getting a new computer.

theyre not necessarily false rumours, though. just because some people on this website say it works fine, it doesnt mean that vista is flawless and glitch-proof, nor that everyone claiming that vista has problems is just spreading nonsense.
 
Mosly gaming which is why Macs were ruled out completely when I made this thread, too bad Macs cannot support gaimg as well as Windows, I personaly think Mac is more stable and better than Windows.
 
I'm positive this has been mentioned before, but some programs either work sluggishly on Vista or don't work at all. I had some games that didn't successfully transfer to Vista because of that.

But this problem is easy to work around of by updating the program version or just finding an alternative.
 
I hate Vista. From a security standpoint, it's wonderful. It locks you so far out of your system that anyone dare thinking of compromising that computer would throw it out the window in frustration. 2 minutes of safety boxes to play Solitaire did it for me.

But I did an actual research paper on it (required for my Windows XP class) and this is the majority of what I found:

XP: Has been out a while, has a plethora of drivers and support still being supported (Win2000 is being phased out now) and has an interface that is familiar to any user since 98, but adds enough new functionality to get what you want out of an operating system. It has encryption, networking capabilities (only with professional can you make a true network, P2P is fine for Home/Media Center and whatnot, but actual workgroups require Pro) enough built-in security to not be a complete sitting duck and the option to turn off all the enhanced graphical features to make it perform even better.

Vista: You need AT LEAST 2GB of RAM to run this semi-smoothly, which is not yet the standard in mid-ranged computers, and no where close in Laptops (which is where Vista pisses me off the most.) Games and other high-graphic applications currently don't have the best of support (though is far better than a few months ago, but no where close to what it needs to be) and enough security to shake a stick at. You can disable the extra security, but then you're better off with Windows XP. The graphics can be disabled like WinXP, but the performance gain is minimal compared to the gain in XP. On the positive side, it does have a SuperSearch utility which constantly indexes and archives your entire hard drive and makes searching files extremely quick. It also has a built in program that keeps any recently-used frequently used programs stored in cache that makes them run almost instantly once you build the "AI" (just run it about 10 times in a row to bump the priorty.)

If you have XP, keep it. If you get a new computer and have an XP disc, use it. If you're considering buying a new computer with less than 2GB RAM and less than 2.5GHZ (dual core can be 1.6GhZ per core) then please don't. You'll use your computer as a shuriken faster than an entertainment device.
 
Repeating what someone else said; don't get Vista if you're not buying a new computer. I don't use Vista because its new security measures block alot of my (hacking) work.

I have 756MB of ram on my laptop and premium works fine with all the effects on.

Games and other high-graphic applications currently don't have the best of support

Almost all new games are DX10 and so work only on vista.

All the new security is pretty annoying but it still takes around two seconds to hack the computer - reboot in safe mode and you have a non password protected admin account. Microsoft should have fixed this years ago if they actually cared about security.
 
Two of my brothers are way bigger computer nerds than I am, so I cannot explain as well as they can, but Vista is ass. It is a total resource hog, the general computer stuff like folder formatting are more annoying too (they caught the Mac syndrome). One of them bought a laptop, and the first thing he did was strip Vista off of it to get XP on. Both are heavy gamers, both refuse to use Vista. Also, supposedly Microsoft barely cares about supporting Vista, as they already know that it is not that great and are working on the next new OS heavily instead of managing this one.
