You are a type specialist in a hostile region. How do you best represent your chosen element?

oh my god being second to the lady salamence team, even as close as it was, is almost as good as getting first because i was 100% sure they'd win. i am unironically flattered thanks y'all :quagchamppogsire:

also: fairy in sinnoh might be less hostile than fire in sinnoh, which is hilarious

What better theme to showcase the Fairy type than the classic Western fairy tale?

We have the curse-laying witch, the tricky court jester with mysterious motives, the noble knight, their trusty steed, the princess, and their faithful animal companion!
(don't worry, Empoleon will not be riding Rapidash)

All fairly standard tropes that need little introduction. Empoleon might seem like an odd pick as the knight but I feel like it fits the vibe of a prideful, courtly character more than something like Lucario; there's definitely no personal bias at play! Sadly, there's no classic European Dragon to slay in the BDSP 'dex (none of Garchomp/Gyarados/Milotic quite fits), but I'm very happy with the vibe of these six.

Battle-wise, this team focuses on messing with the opponent's stats and status so that Mr. Mime can Baton Pass its Nasty Plot boosts, either setting up for a classic Empoleon sweep or allowing the ace Clefable to both exert offensive pressure and eventually become nigh invulnerable.

Most of the items are thematically relevant as well as useful in battle:
  • the witch sacrifices life for power
  • the jester and the steed wear special sashes to signify their status as part of the knight's retinue on his quest
  • uhh animal sidekicks always be eating??
  • the princess has to scrounge for scraps???
  • don't ask about the Shuca Berry please??????

I'd like to start by also congratulating Lady Salamence on her well-deserved sweep. What a cohesive, wonderfully-executed theme, both in flavor and in battle! I saw her team and immediately wished I myself had thought of the idea of fears for a Dark-type team.

Anyways, on to a type/region combo that had me a little lost at first, as I reflected on my own result. How do you tie together Mr. Mime, Clefable, and Azumarill? Or alternatively, how do you sell a team with no more than two of the three as a Fairy specialist's? I knew there was something, or more precisely somewhere, on the tip of my tongue, but it took backreading this thread to remind me what exactly (thank you, jhm5!). And the answer is... location, location, location! That's something I'm sure Mr. Backlot knows a thing or two about, as the owner of the toniest mansion, the homiest square, and the most gregarious garden this side of Kanto!

The vibes of all the aforementioned places really fit the Fairy type, I feel. And Trophy Garden in particular sees members of all of Sinnoh's native Fairy-type evolution lines imported, plus non-native Jigglypuff, plus a few others that fit in terms of egg group or evolution. But wait, there's a problem there - imported, that is, after obtaining the National Pokedex. Fret not, however, for it's exactly the entire Fairy type that was in a way imported to BDSP after not being found in the first renditions of Sinnoh! All that aside, there's also Trophy Garden's regular encounters, notably its status as the sole place in Sinnoh to find the Pikachu line in the wild.

Why are they so relevant to my theme? Well, that's easy - it's all thanks to Amity Square, where Pikachu's one of a select few Pokemon that's always been considered cute and pettable enough for a stroll. The others also found in Trophy Garden are actual Fairy-type Clefairy and fellow Fairy egg group member Happiny, which together contribute to the majority of original DP Square selections sharing that egg group. That gives me five of six so far; Roselia's line rounds out an all-Trophy Garden roster best thanks to being the sole remaining Fairy egg group members encountered (regularly, no less) there.

With that settled, the Pokemon Mansion now plays into some smaller details - such as how it's normally the only place to register honorary Fairy Manaphy as seen. Another such aspect is how it allows me to imagine that this is the roster of a maid who works at the Mansion. Other maids are mainly who you battle when it plays host to battles in Platinum, after all (with a Clefairy each in tow, hence Clefable as my ace). Also, Backlot and his butler are established characters beyond this series' remit, and it just feels fitting for an honest, hardworking maid in their employ to be the one who actually knows how to battle there. And I wish I had a maid dress of my own, which I can't honestly say isn't factoring in to this.

Anyways, here's what I like to call Team Cherish!
:sv/mr. mime: :sv/azumarill: :sv/roserade: :sv/pikachu: :sv/blissey: :sv/clefable: (click for importable)
:mr. mime: Mr. Mime (F) @ Light Clay | Filter | Timid | Reflect | Light Screen | Dazzling Gleam | Psychic (Level 68)

Dual screens are a tried and true tactic for in-game Fairy specialists, dating back to the type's debut with Valerie, and since utilized by most of them at some point. (As a bonus, they're also the most iconic archetype of Monotype Fairy teams here on Smogon.) I'm probably only too pleased to persist in this particular tradition with the Pokemon most closely associated with the screens in terms of flavor.

All its in-battle details follow naturally, almost inevitably from the premise of a lead dual screens Mr. Mime. Light Clay boosts their duration, Filter boosts its ability to stick around just long enough to set both screens, a Timid nature aids that goal in another way, and then there's the STABs to complete the set Valerie pioneered ten years ago. Psychic also helps alleviate excessive vulnerability to one of Fairy's typical weaknesses.

:azumarill: Azumarill (F) @ Sitrus Berry | Huge Power | Jolly | Belly Drum | Play Rough | Superpower | Aqua Jet (Level 68)

Another very typical set, Azumarill sets up with much help from Mr. Mime's screens and then hopefully goes to town. There's not even much to comment on here, as the Sitrus Berry, Huge Power, Belly Drum, and Aqua Jet all clearly go together. Play Rough is a common choice too, locked in by being its Fairy STAB and on a team without other Play Rough users. Superpower is the only slightly unconventional move on its set; it's meant to solidify Azumarill as its team's answer to Steel-types, an otherwise poor matchup almost all around, while allowing trainers to play around the scary +6 Attack a bit. Meanwhile, the Jolly nature makes it more practical to utilize Play Rough and Superpower, which seems like the play for an in-game NPC's team.

:roserade: Roserade (F) @ Focus Sash | Natural Cure | Bold | Attract | Swagger | Giga Drain | Extrasensory (Level 68)

I originally had Roselia in this slot to parallel Pikachu, but without Eviolite, it unfortunately offers nothing over its evolution in battle. At least Roserade adds a touch of refinement that's always been part and parcel of Fairy's flavor as a type, on top of its Shiny Stone evolution. In this team, its moveset now ties it more firmly to Mr. Backlot's properties, while allowing it to serve as a disruptor and another facilitator of its teammates.

Piece by piece, there's two items found on every single BDSP Gym Leader rematch team: Focus Sash and Life Orb, the former always on something frail. That fits Roserade here, particularly due to Swagger sharply boosting opponents' Attack, whereas Life Orb has some negative synergy with this would-be dual screens team. The item decision merely fed into its planned moveset this time instead of determining it, because said set is centered around the TM found in the Pokemon Mansion + one of two found at Amity Square, neither of which I had room for otherwise. The former, Swagger, secures this Roserade as specific to its origin, offsetting its evolution line being the only one that's not associated with Trophy Garden somehow. As for the rest, Giga Drain and Extrasensory synergize through their respective healing and flinch chance while utilizing Roserade's very high Special Attack more effectively than another superfluous Dazzling Gleam; the latter secures Roserade's role as the team's Poison check to boot. Natural Cure is its Ability of choice, one which also contributes to a subtheme of status resilience, while a Bold nature helps it stick around longer.

:pikachu: Pikachu (F) @ Light Ball | Lightning Rod | Naughty | Volt Tackle | Surf | Iron Tail | Volt Switch (Level 68)

Raichu would've more effectively leveraged the screens, but they're only one part of my theme here. Thank goodness for the Light Ball, because Pikachu is the one allowed in Amity Square, while Raichu takes a hard right turn away from typical Fairy-type design principles. Like Roserade, Pikachu attacks fast and strong, though it's higher on the risk and reward for a variety of reasons. Notable among them are its moves, of which the first three are firmly associated with Pikachu in particular, while the last one's TM is found at Amity Square - and it doesn't learn any Fairy-type moves useful for its role in BDSP anyways. Volt Switch rounds off the set by allowing Pikachu to pivot out of matchups its main three moves don't cover, while a physical-leaning set with a Naughty nature provides much-needed extra power in lieu of EVs. Surf and Volt Switch still ensure Lightning Rod's stat boost finds some use, sealing its slot over Static on this set.

:blissey: Blissey (F) @ Chople Berry | Natural Cure | Bold | Sing | Soft-Boiled | Charm | Dazzling Gleam (Level 72)

What comes after successfully clearing the maids' challenge in the Pokemon Mansion? A battle with either a Lady or a Rich Boy, each of which has exactly one Blissey. Unfortunately, aces are always last in BDSP type specialists' lineups; hopefully this one's AI would tend to send out Blissey after Clefable gets KO'd regardless. At any rate, those battles are also where I took my moveset cues, just as with Clefable below. This one needed more alteration, though - in particular, Fling is workable by in-game rematch standards in tow with well-chosen items and actual Attack stats, so not on a Blissey.

However, Rich Boy Liam's Blissey does directly contribute Sing in the first moveslot, while Lady Celeste's Blissey adds Soft-Boiled in the second slot. Liam has Defense Curl in his third slot, to which the Fairy-type Charm is mostly an upgrade that also synergizes more effectively with Blissey's most practical Ability. Meanwhile, Celeste finishes things out with Psychic on her Blissey, which I've replaced with the Fairy-type Dazzling Gleam to replicate its anti-Fighting purpose - with prospects by in-game standards thanks to its Chople Berry, Bold nature, Charm, and potential screens.

:clefable: Clefable (F) @ Leftovers | Magic Guard | Quirky | Metronome | Minimize | Moonblast | Cosmic Power (Level 74)

My starting point for this moveset was those of each maid's Clefairy in Platinum, with a view to shaping them into something suitable for a type specialist's ace. Hence, Endure had to go, also given that its purpose was to play into the challenge to defeat all five maids in a fixed number of turns anyways. Metronome, however, did not have to go! It simply needed more competitive trappings, such as the first maid's Minimize alongside Cosmic Power to enable the unfettered wagging of fingers. As for the clincher, the maids' Meteor Mash is also outdated and deserved to go in favor of another night sky-themed attacking move, a post-Platinum introduction that's quintessentially Clefable (Fairy in general too) and that the rest of the team misses out on. Moonblast also ensures not all its eggs are in one basket.

Even Clefable's move order stems from the aforementioned maids - Metronome first, then Minimize, then a conventional damaging move (Moonblast in this case), and finally a means to lessen damage (Cosmic Power in this case). It has a Quirky nature in order to reflect the, well, quirkiness of its strategy, while not reducing any of its stats since Metronome can do almost anything. Magic Guard prevents trainers from whittling it down with status, a protection I consider more important in enabling this double-boosting Clefable to do its thing than Unaware (and also more Fairy-flavorful). And of course, it's meant to stick around for a while, a goal which Leftovers most effectively helps enable.
~
The levels emphasize Blissey and especially Clefable thanks to their ties to the Pokemon Mansion itself while generally conforming to BDSP standards for a rematch of a Gym Leader where it's found. Likewise for the inclusion of held items, Abilities, and natures even while excluding EVs. Their movesets are meant to be an order of priority where not otherwise stated, while Team Cherish's lineup order groups the Amity Square lines together after the regular Trophy Garden encounters after the other two Fairy-types. Nicknames would've been a very fun touch, but alas, one in-game precedent really isn't there for.

Edit: Tweaked a couple movesets for thematic cohesiveness because I remembered TMs again, with thanks to QQ for allowing me to do so, and apologies to everyone else for the sudden change-up compared to what you saw. The old importable is here.

So for this one, I was looking at the three main Sinnoh fairy types and thinking about what links them all together beyond just typing. Lo and behold, it hit me: all three have baby forms. Beyond that, all three babies also share a unique trait in that Cleffa, Mime Jr., and Azurill all learn Charm as an egg move. Charm is a useful fairy type move for lowering the opponent's attack by two stages. As it turns out, there are three other babies available in Sinnoh that learn charm as an egg move, so I decided on making a team out of them.

:Mime Jr.: :Pichu: :Happiny: :Cleffa: :Munchlax: :Azurill:
:Mr. Mime: :Raichu: :Blissey: :Clefable: :Snorlax: :Azumarill:

:Azumarill:
Azumarill @ Sitrus Berry
Ability: Huge Power

The basic strategy is to lower the opponent's stats to allow for a set up sweep. Every team member has Charm to fit with the theme and to make sweeping easier, as the whole team is weak to physical attacks without proper set up.

Mr. Mime starts in the lead slot with a Choice Scarf Trick set to lock the opponent into a certain move, while Psychic and Dazzling Gleam offer strong coverage. Raichu's Lightning Rod pairs well with Azumarill in the back, and has a support set with Nuzzle, Encore, and Volt Switch to paralyze opponents, lock in their moves, and switch out to better matchups. Blissey also uses a support set with Stealth Rock and Seismic Toss for chip damage plus Soft-Boiled for recovery. These three make a strong support combo to help the three set up sweepers in back.

First, Clefable is a Calm Mind sweeper with Magic Guard to prevent chip, Moonlight for recovery, and Moonblast for its only attack. Snorlax comes next with a classic Curse ChestoRest set, using Earthquake as its only attack for coverage against Steel, Poison, and Fire types who may resist fairy type attacks. Finally, Azumarill has its standard Huge Power Belly Drum set with recovery in Sitrus Berry, STAB priority in Aqua Jet, and STAB power in Play Rough.

Ultimately, this team has good balance, surprising coverage, and the potential to be scary if a sweeper gets out of hand. Not only that, but it all comes together through its shared history as babies and use of the fairy type move Charm.

Doesn't know how to attack
Woo! I got the ranking I hoped for! :P

It says a lot when there's more Pokemon of a type that didn't exist yet when the original versions of the game was made than Fire, Dragon, and Ice. I'm not going to make fun of Flint any more. There's no point in beating the dead Rapidash when we should be beating his other Fire type. Besides, Candice is only able to have 3 Ice types because she uses 2 from the same evolution chain! Let's make fun of her instead! :P

Gen 4 is known for adding to a lot of evolution chains of older Pokemon, so this team is made of Pokemon that gained pre-evolutions or evolve from older Pokemon. Two of them didn't gain their pre-evolutions in Gen 4, but they're the must use Fairy types and I cared more about the gaining family members in a new Gen than gaining them in Gen 4. I added fun facts about the evolution chains because I wrote one for Mime Jr. then Mismagius and I figured why not for all of them.

:Mr. Mime::Light Clay:
Mr. Mime @ Light Clay
Filter
-Dazzling Gleam
-Psychic
-Light Screen
-Reflect

Transferring Mime Jr. to SwSh lets Mr. Rime know previous Gen moves, like Toxic, Infestation, and Mud-Slap. I don't see the point of why they introduced so many baby Pokemon in Gen 4, but Mr. Rime alone makes me glad about Mime Jr.'s existence.

I went with Fairy STAB because how could I not for a Fairy team and Psychic for Psychic STAB because it's good for taking on most Poison types. The last two moves are way too easy to explain. It's Mr. Mime, the Pokemon known for making walls. How could I not give him Dual Screens?

:Roserade::Big Root:
Roserade @ Big Root
Poison Point
-Dazzling Gleam
-Giga Drain
-Spikes
-Leech Seed

Magmar and Electabuzz gained Pre-Evolutions in Gen 2 and Evolutions in Gen 4, but Roselia is the only Pokemon to gain an Evolution and Pre-Evolution in the same game. They're not the only Pokemon to gain multiple new members to their evolution chain though. Eevee got that in Gens 2 and 4 too.

Roserade felt like a good option when there's a Fairy type that should be part Grass because it literaly becomes part of flower it carried. Fairy Pokemon are associated with flowers, which makes sense but is also kind of weird because the Grass type can be any type of plant, including flowers. Anyway, Spikes users are usually best as leads, but I prefer leading with a Pokemon of the type of the team and Dual Screens would help Roserade set up more layers of Spikes. Leech Seed with Spikes feels like a cruel combo because of punishing the one way to end Leech Seed.

For the item, I could've gone with Black Sludge, but I thought a Big Root would be more interesting because it's used much less. I'm not sure if it's worse than Black Sludge because Giga Drain would probably used more than Dazzling Gleam and even though it doesn't boost how much Leech Seed makes the opponent lose it does boost how much you heal.

:Azumarill::Sitrus Berry:
Azumarill @ Sirtus Berry
Huge Power
-Play Rough
-Belly Drum
-Aqua Jet
-Brick Break

This might be the weirdest fun fact. Marill and Azurill shared no Egg moves until HGSS gave them both Body Slam. If they hatched as Azurill then they could only know Azurill's Egg moves like Encore, Sing, or Tickle but hatching as Marill would only let them know Marill's Egg moves like Perish Song, Belly Drum, and Supersonic. This weirdness effects one spin off game. You can get Eggs in Mystery Dungeon Time/Darkness/Sky with Egg moves and always hatching as Azurill make it so there are moves Marill can't know in Mystery Dungeon even though they can know those moves in DPPt.

Belly Drum + Aqua Jet is pretty mean for an in game trainer. I'm already being a horrible person with the last Pokemon, so let's do it! >:D Brick Break is for Steel types. I considered Bulldoze to hit Steel and Poison, but I figured I should give Poison a break with one Pokemon because of both other Fairy types knowing Psychic attacks.

:Blissey::Bright Powder:
Blissey @ Bright Powder
Natural Cure
-Sweet Kiss
-Thunder Wave
-Seismic Toss
-Soft-Boiled

Chansey has the opposite situation of Magmar and Electabuzz. She gained an evolution in Gen 2 and Pre-Evolution in Gen 4. Happiny is a different story than Chansey. Chansey really didn't need an evolution. Chansey didn't need a buff to her Base 250 HP. Not needing another buff is probably why Blissey isn't a Fairy type. Happiny is a different story though. It really needs to evolve to be good and I'd say what she gets from evolving was overkill if Chansey was introduced after Happiny instead of the other way around. Happiny is the Pokemon that gains the most in one stat from evolution. Her Base HP goes up by 150 from her puny in comparison but still very good 100.

I went with a Status move for Blissey's Fairy move because her defence is way better than her offence. If I was going to be annoying with luck, I might as well add Thunder Wave to make it worse. I already had Leftovers on the final Pokemon, so I went with Bright Powder because I'm evil.

I didn't even consider Chansey because BDSP only has held items that existed in DPPt, which means no Eviolite. I considered Chimecho for an easier Pokemon than Blissey, but I didn't know anything interesting about Chingling and Chimecho other than the number of moves with Wind in their name doubling from 1 to 2 in Legends: Arceus.

:Mismagius::Expert Belt:
Mismagius @ Expert Belt
Levitate
-Dazzling Gleam
-Shadow Ball
-Psychic
-Mystic Fire

Mismagius should have been a Fairy type IMO. At least Flutter Mane fixes that for Misdreavus. Too bad it had to fix that with a name that sounds like a bad pony fan fic character. Anyway, here's fun fact based on what is instead of what I think is wrong. Misdreavious's Base HP, Atk, and Def are all the same and their SpA, SpD, and Spe are also all the same. Evolving into Mismagius gives +20 to SpA, SpD, and Spe. Flutter Mane's stats compared to Mismagius's are +30 to SpA, SpD, and Spe but -5 to HP, Atk, and Def. I love that they're almost like a third member of the evolution chain.

I thought about using Calm Mind, but I felt like this team had enough set up Pokemon and it's okay to have a Pokemon with 4 attacks. The Fairy attack happens to hit Dark types that would take advantage of the one Pokemon they'd have a good time against and the coverage moves are for Poison and Steel types.

:Clefable::Leftovers:
Clefable @ Leftovers
Magic Guard
-Moonblast
-Moonlight
-Cosmic Power
-Stored Power

Cleffa was one of the baby Pokemon only available though Gen 2's new breeding mechanic. That fun fact was just stating the obvious, but I just want to say it was a neat way to introduce something that would happen to become a major part of competitive Pokemon.

Cosmic Power + Healing Move = Fun

I started with my favorite Clefable's moveset because I'm a horrible person who can't resist stall then "downgraded" it for something that would work for an in game trainer. I don't think Leppa Berry + Recycle is a good idea for an in game trainer because of the AI probably not knowing how to use it effectively, so that freed up a moveslot for an attack and let me use Leftovers instead. I went with Moonblast for STAB. Clefable can't learn Toxic in BDSP, so I needed another attack. (Yet another BDSP complaint: They should've changed TM 06 to something else instead of limiting it to Pokemon that already learned Toxic.) Stored Power can be just as insane as Toxic after enough stalling, so using it as a second attack isn't that bad.

:Mr. Mime::Roserade::Blissey::Azumarill::Mismagius::Clefable:

This team ended up being simular to what I'd probably end up with without resticting myself to Pokemon that were evolutions of older Pokemon or gained Pre-Evolutions after they were introduced... I'd usualy be happy with a team like this, but the saying, "Restriction breeds creativity." was making me hope I'd make someing more dirrerent. :/

Hope you liked this team and/or the fun facts. :)

Theme (not the first one to come with something like this). Nocturnal Pokemon, some of them Moon related. Team is structured to one support Pokemon that is followed by one offensive.

:clefable: Item: Babiri Berry. Moves: Thunder Wave, Stealth Rock, Moonblast, Charm. Fairy. Nothing to explain here, is a lead Mon that puts Rocks, paralyzes stuff and uses Charm before to prepare the next Mon, which will be set-up one. Its a Nocturnal Pokemon that uses Moon Stone to evolve.
:noctowl: Item: Leftovers. Ability: Tinted Lens. Moves: Calm Mind, Roost, Moonblast, Hurricane. Nocturnal Mon (it also evolves only at night) that learns Moonblast. Lives in forests, where fairies live. First sweeper of the team with CM + Roost.
:weavile: (shiny) Item: Light Ball. Ability: Pickpocket. Moves: Fling, Icicle Crash, Torment, Throat Chop. Another night Mon. Despite being able to be male, it has somewhat feminine look, another argument for Fairy. Its also based on a kamaitachi, a japanese folclore creature. Lastly, a fun fact is that in Gen 2 Sneasel learned Moonlight. This Weavile has a deceptive set: people expect Weavile to just attack, but this one is more a supporter with Fling (guaranted paralysis) + Pickpocket if the opponent touches it. Torment is another toy that helps the next Mon to set-up.
:mismagius: Item: Life Orb. Moves: Nasty Plot, Shadow Ball, Dazzling Gleam, Mystical Fire. Another nocturnal Pokemon that uses Dusk Stone to evolve. This one should have been an actual Fairy. In the anime it created illusions and dreams when appeared. Pokedex also has nice lore, one entry is like this: "It chants incantations. While they usually torment targets, some chants bring happiness. " Of course, it also learns Dazzling Gleam, which means the move has to be used in a classic Nasty Plot set that tries to sweep with what it can.
:mr_mime: Item: Light Clay. Ability: Filter. Moves: Reflect, Light Screen, Thunder Wave, Dazzling Gleam. This one is an exception, its not a nocturnal Pokemon. However, its a very creepy Fairy and I am pretty sure it has given Nightmares to some people. Mr. Mime puts screens and paralyzes targets to ease set-up for the ace Pokemon.
:dustox: Item: Black Sludge. Ability: Shield Dust. Moves: Quiver Dance, Harden, Moonlight, Bug Buzz. This cute moth is another nocturnal Pokemon and the ace of the team. Its atracted by lights and is actually a dangerous creature in the forest, since it emits toxic dust. Taking advtange of the screens provided by Mr. Mime, Dustox sets up both defenses, heals when needed and sweeps with Bug Buzz.

And we're onto the next round - our winner has chosen a new topic...

You are a Fairy-type trainer in BDSP Sinnoh. How do you best represent your chosen type?

A reminder to please read the guidelines in the OP before commenting, especially if you're new to the thread.

BDSP Sinnoh Dex is here for those who need it. A gentle reminder that BDSP's expanded roster of options compared to the original games do not count as part of the Sinnoh Pokedex so please do not include them in your selections. Any teams including Pokemon outside of the listed 151 will be disqualified.

You have until September 3rd, 9PM GMT to make your case!

Generally I err towards the idea that your post should be more about your team than a character. That said, it obviously helps in a lot of cases to give a bit of context for why your team is the way it is, and if identifying who uses that team helps in that then by all means go for it. If your team is based around only using Pokemon from, say, Stark Mountain it's definitely useful to say "I envisage this trainer being a researcher who's investigating the mineral composition of the area"; that's just enough detail to be useful and aid in illustrating your concept if it's a little abstract.

Where I would draw the line is if you go into unneeded specifics. Basically that's just so people don't get carried away and end up writing paragraphs of fanfiction. It's not a "design a character" or "create a scenario" thread. So use your best judgement but keep in mind that we don't really need names or an excessive biography; just an indication of what this trainer's goals and mindset are.

Best thing would be to refer to previous posts for guidance. No-one's really gone overboard on creating a character in any of the rounds so far in my judgement.

this team is MAYBE the favourite i have done so far :sphearical:

:ss/roserade:
:ss/rapidash::ss/azumarill::ss/mismagius::ss/clefable:

The theme of this team is fantasy. Since Fairy is the type closest to that vibe of being fantastical and otherwordly without being creepy, this is the team that will try to recreate that Final Fantasy I archetypical classes feeling while still picking Fairy mons, Fairy-adjacent or mons that look like they could be Fairy. This gladly means no Mr. Mime too!

:roserade: @ Big Root
Ability: Natural Cure
- Sleep Powder
- Spikes
- Giga Drain
- Aromatherapy

Our lead and also our White Mage, Roserade focuses on support and disruption. Sleep lead, sets up Spikes, keeps itself alive with Big Root Giga Drain and Natural Cure when it switches out for a hard hitter, and comes back in to clean status with Aromatherapy. I do feel like this family is more Fairy-like than most other Grassers at least!

:lopunny: @ no item
Shiny: Yes
Ability: Limber
- Switcheroo
- Charm
- U-turn
- High Jump Kick

Our Thief is the fast, cutesy, versatile, could-pass-as-a-Fairy (EDIT: specially now that i found its Shiny sprite!) Lopunny. Her main thing is to literally be a thief and use a dry Switcheroo to steal the opponent's item. Usually, Lopunny goes Klutz + hindering item for this kind of set, but I'd rather benefit from a potential non-Choice item. Charm fits in with the type and helps Lopunny survive to pull a Switcheroo, U-turn gets it out, and High Jump Kick has to be its attack because... did you know BDSP left it in the awkward position of not having a strong reliable Normal-type move at all? Return is dead, it doesn't learn Double-Edge (only in LA), the Mega Kick TM (as realiable as 75% Acc is...) is only in SwSh... I was not putting effing Strength here rofl.

:rapidash: @ Leftovers
Ability: Flame Body
- Flare Blitz
- High Horsepower
- Will-O-Wisp
- Morning Sun

Speaking of awkward movepool decisions, BDSP also didn't distribute Play Rough to our Knight, so its only Fairy move there is Charm. Which Lopunny is using, and it doesn't fit any set that it actually worth it for Rapidash. So... 2 Pokémon out of 6 with no Fairy moves, but I hope I am making up for it with a strong cohesive theme. Rapidash would be a natural fit for the Knight even if it didn't have a Fairy-type regional form, since it's regal and physically strong and has some healing and disruption up its sleeve.

:azumarill: @ Choice Band
Ability: Huge Power
- Aqua Jet
- Play Rough
- Waterfall
- Focus Punch

Our Black Belt is none other than one of the actual Fairies of Sinnoh! Azumarill is only interested in dealing huge amounts of damage with its STAB moves, occasionally dipping into the revenge killing business with Aqua Jet, and if it's late enough in the game that it can predict a switch to a Steel-type, Focus Punch will end a life.

:mismagius: @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Levitate
- Shadow Ball
- Dazzling Gleam
- Mystical Fire
- Destiny Bond

Revenge killing is the full-time job of the Black Mage and the victim of one of Game Freak's biggest practical jokes. Mismagius not getting Fairy type in XY even though both it and its pre-evo obviously fit in with the type, and then three gens later creating an alterate form of Misdreavus with better stats AND said typing just feels purposeful and petty. Mismagius is more Fairy than damn Mr. Mime, what the hell.
Anyway, when the enemy is weakened enough, Mismagius comes in and uses incredible Ghost/Fairy coverage to clean up. Mystical Fire is useful and adds flavor, and bringing it out one last time just for Destiny Bond can be a nasty surprise.

:clefable: @ Life Orb
Ability: Magic Guard
- Wish
- Calm Mind
- Moonblast
- Thunderbolt

And who else would be our Red Mage and our ace other than Pokémon's biggest jack-of-all-trades? Clefable can come in earlier to provide Wish support, synergising well with Roserade, and once Lopunny and Rapidash help Azumarill and Mismagius clear the field enough, it can set up and sweep. Thunderbolt is picked as the coverage because this team had enough Fire and Ghost type representation.

(As a bonus, in original DP I would have done this same team, replacing Rapidash's High Horsepower and Morning Sun with Iron Tail and Rest, Azumarill's Play Rough with Ice Punch, Mismagius' Dazzling Gleam and Mystical Fire with Thunderbolt and HP Fire, and Clefable's Moonblast with Ice Beam.)

Well deserved, Lady Salamence .

I'm so glad QQ hasn't banned me from writing my trainer fanfic, I went through 2 teams I hated before figuring out a character(s) I liked. So we're back to doubles, for the second time only for me.

Fairy Sinnoh Doubles.png

Mr. Mime, Azu, Clefable are mandatory. Clefairy getting Friend Guard was what inspired me to try a doubles team and makes it an even 4 fairies(this matters for this). Pachirisu is the OG tiny cute dragonslayer which might as well make it a fairy. Bronzong is a very mythic, fantastic pokemon possibly from another world, which is extremely Fairy.

So for character, they're siblings, 12ish sister, 7ish brother. He's heavy on the all-out offense and clearly too young to "get" strategy, she says a lot of things about making sure her little bro has a fair chance against you. (she's Mr. Mime, Pachirisu, Clefairy, he's Bronzong, Azu, Clefable. Which gives them each 2 fairies, 1 of which is a pure-type). Clefable was hers before he started training; he's not really into the whole fairy thing because he thinks they're for babies, but he does love the mons in part because he trains with his sister.

Mr. Mime @ Light Clay
Ability: Filter
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Sassy Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Light Screen
- Reflect
- Wide Guard
- Trick Room

Bronzong @ Expert Belt
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 SpD
Brave Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Gyro Ball
- Earthquake
- Rock Slide
- Stealth Rock

Pachirisu @ Sitrus Berry
Ability: Volt Absorb
EVs: 252 HP / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Nuzzle
- Super Fang
- Follow Me
- Protect

Azumarill @ Life Orb
Ability: Huge Power
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Atk / 8 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Belly Drum
- Waterfall
- Play Rough
- Superpower

Clefairy @ Mental Herb
Ability: Friend Guard
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Def / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Aromatherapy
- Thunder Wave
- Follow Me
- Heal Pulse

Clefable @ Leftovers
Ability: Unaware
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SpA / 4 SpD
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Moonblast
- Psychic
- Shadow Ball
- Calm Mind
Support Mime with Trick Room, leads alongside Gyro Ball/EQ Bronzong. No surprises there. Pachirisu is the VGC Worlds set(I should replace Protect because AI can't use it well, but I decided the reference was more fun). Azumarill is a Belly Drum set, which is optimistic I know but fits. And we end with Clefairy with a full-support set including Friend Guard, and Clefable with Calm Mind+3 Attacks and Unaware. The team has multiple coverages for everything that beats Fairy and is stupid-bulky.

I was almost really stuck for this, but making it doubles with Clefairy fixed that. I tried Tricksters with Weavile and Infernape among others, and gave up on an Oops All Psychics team with Mismagius. I'm pretty happy with this one, all told. Now to read through everyone else's teams and see what obvious wildcard I missed.

By the time I got the chance to start making my team, a lot of my ideas were already taken. I brainstormed for a bit, then remember that I never got a chance to the DP Dragon team, so I decide to make up for it.

Spr_DP_Lass.png
Spr_DP_Dragon_Tamer.png

The idea behind the multi-battle team is the double fake-out of "Oh I get it, the Dragon Tamer's little sister is the real threat." only to realize, no, you should have been worried about the dragons. I was seriously tempted to have two separate teams of six, but I'll presume six is the total limit. Either way, nothing in the rules state that multiple trainers are banned.

:sm/Mr. Mime:

Soundproof
+Light Clay
-Dazzling Gleam
-Reflect
-Light Screen
-Wide Guard

:sm/Gyarados:

Intimidate
+Damp Rock
-Waterfall
-Thunder
-Hurricane
-Rain Dance

Oh yeah, I'm bringing back special Gyarados, and this time it's joining Mr. Mime in support by setting up Rain Dance to counter Fire types thinking to counter against the Fairy types and Steelix.

:sm/Azumarill:

Sap Sipper
+Leftovers
-Muddy Water
-Tickle
-Soak
-Protect

:sm/Steelix:

Sheer Force
+Life Orb
-Iron Tail
-Earthquake
-Thunder Fang
-Explosion

Support Azu is coming in hot, with Muddy Water and Tickle to debuff the opponent, Soak to make Pokemon weak to Thunder Fang, and Protect to stop damage from Earthquake and Explosion.

:sm/Clefairy:

Friend Guard
+Sitrus Berry
-Moonblast
-Aromatherapy
-Life Dew
-Protect

:sm/Garchomp:

Rough Skin
+Lum Berry
-Outrage
-Earthquake
-Fire Blast
-Swords Dance

Did you know Eviolite isn't in BDSP? I didn't until shortly writing this. Clefairy is supporting Garchomp's rampage by increasing its defense with Friend Guard, healing with Life Dew, and curing Outrage confusions with Aromatherapy.

I liked how I paired the Kanto and Johto Pokemon together, with Clefable considered since it's a common OU threat alongside Garchomp. (Damn it Hugin, I'm in the middle of writing the conclusion and you took my multi-battle siblings idea) Another idea I had were precious stones, represented with stone evolutions, with Chansey, Roserade, and Mismagius adding to the flavor. I also thought of going full pink with West Gastrodon, Cherrim, Blissey, and Shiny Lopunny. In a better timeline, Shiny Mega Garchomp would have been the star of that team.

These are the three naturally occurring Fairy types and I can't see a reason to exclude any of them.

:pachirisu:
This little fellow learns a lot of Fairy-typed attacks by level up. It's also quite cute so it matches a Fairy-type aesthetic.

:noctowl:
The only non-Fairy type in the small BDSP Pokemon to learn Moonblast naturally that isn't a Fairy-type.

:blissey:
It's a pick blob. It also learns Dazzling Gleam and I like it with Clefable more than some of the other options I came up with.

I really did consider going all in on a "creepy" team, but personally I just like Pachirisu too much. I wish Umbreon were available.

HMs: Roserade, Mismagius (Dazzling Gleam); Beautifly, Cherrim, Lopunny, Purugly, Chimecho, Lumineon, and Milotic

Gonna be in a Zoom call at 9PM so here's tonight's poll.

You have until September 5th, 9PM GMT to cast your vote!

Nuuuuuuuuuuuumbers.

Clefable: 12

Mr Mime: 11

Azumarill: 9

Clefairy: 2

Mismagius: 7

Blissey: 5

Noctowl: 4

Rapidash: 3
Roserade: 3
Pachirisu: 3

Dustox: 2

Snorlax: 1
Pikachu: 1

Kricketune: 1
Empoleon: 1
Purugly: 1
Gyarados: 1
Lopunny: 1
Weavile: 1
Steelix: 1
Garchomp: 1

Another split in Fairy-types used. Clefable, as the only pure Fairy-type, got the most use; Mr Mime came in second; and then Azumarill third because it sucks. Not actually sure why it ended up that way, beyond maybe that there's a few Water-types vying to replace Azumarill. There's not really that much that unifies the three species. If you're going the route of "big blobby cutesy animals" Clefable and Azumarill seem more apt, while if your vibe is more "tricksy crafty pranksters and meanies" Mr Mime + 5 others is more the way to go.

Despite being nominally low on actual Fairy-types, Sinnoh has a LOT of potential honorary Fairies. Having more than a few species in common with Hoenn, there's a lot of overlap when looking at potential picks - Milotic, Roserade, Beautifly, Chimecho, Raichu.

Mismagius is not remotely a surprise for most popular wildcard. It often gets lumped in with Fairies, and has a cute, feminine vibe a lot of Ghosts don't. Nor is Blissey, which despite being pure Normal has such an association with Fairy it looks more like a Fairy than many actual Fairies do. Noctowl was a bit surprising as a popular choice compared to the others: it's much more Psychic/Ghost-affiliated in my eyes.

And then there's some more amusing wildcards, like Garchomp, Bronzong, and Kricketune. Honestly I dig it. Fairy, like Dragon, is such a broad type you could really call it the Magic type and have done with it.

Stuff I expected to see more/at all:

Lumineon. Despite its bland Water-typing, Lumineon leans into the vibe of a few other types quite strongly: Ice, Flying, Bug, and also Fairy. Also has a serene beauty theme that fits the image a lot.

Pachirisu. This thing screams Fairy, it's practically Sinnohan Dedenne. Learns all the requisite moves and is in the Fairy egg group. And it learns annoying moves like Nuzzle and Super Fang, VERY Fairy vibe.

Roserade. It fits the vibe massively and is a Grass-type which has historically had quite heavy aesthetic and conceptual overlap with Fairy. Plus type diversity: Dustox and Gengar are the only other Poison-types I could see fitting into a Fairy team. It got a couple of picks in ORAS Hoenn and I was starting to think it was going to be incredibly underused before two other people chipped in with it.

Lopunny. There's a theme emerging, but it learns all the right moves and is pretty/cute/slutty. I was thinking about a beauty-themed team but honestly none of the actual Fairy-types really work for that: it's more that you could make a team entirely out of wildcards. Beautifly, Lumineon, Roserade, Lopunny, Milotic, and Rapidash.

Clefable: 12

Mr Mime: 11

Azumarill: 9

Steelix: 1
Garchomp: 1
This one was fun. There's a lot you can choose based on for Fairy, and I was surprised how easy it was, going through, to immediately vibe with or not a specific team, even when the mons were extremely similar. I'm glad I wasn't the only one to think of Pachirisu, that seemed extremely fitting. However, I never would have thought of Noctowl, but that's a perfect mon for this. There's a lot of one-use wildcards that I'm perfectly happy with, as well.

Time for a quick look at last comp winners, LGPE Dark; and I really mean a quick look:

Lady Salamence: GEEZ, I think this is the biggest win yet! And I can see why, using a very strong theme in phobias to unite all the LGPE Dark-types and other picks. Despite some of us making a "psuedo" trainer/character, this goes to show that at the end of the day if a team can just have a strong theme sans trainer it's likely the best way to do things (and more matches with QuentinQuonce's vision for this thread).

Do I even go over anyone else's? There might as well be a 5-way tie for 2nd for all it matters. Looking at those 5 (which includes me) we have a wide range of themes that don't really tell us anything: Rock Tunnel (location theme), Team Rocket Alolan Smuggler (character theme), & General Dark Team. Maybe the lesson here is to think a bit more outside the box?

EDIT: Decided to do the FRLG "Dark" now, with some number crunching
Persian: 7

Golbat: 6

Raticate: 5

Gengar: 4
Arbok: 4

Vileplume: 3

Fearow: 2
Hypno: 2
Arcanine: 2
Rhydon: 2
Parasect: 2
Muk: 2
Gyarados: 2

Eevee: 1
Moltres: 1
Farfetch'd: 1
Kingler: 1
Primeape: 1
Hitmonchan: 1
Beedrill: 1
Electrode: 1
Weezing: 1
Aerodactyl: 1
Dodrio: 1
Victreebel: 1
Starmie: 1
Magneton: 1
Clefable: 1
Marowak: 1
Jolteon: 1

In no particular order:
misterdarvus:
Golbat, Fearow, Vileplume, Arbok, Hypno, Gengar (Pretty much your main selection of honorary Dark-types, with any missing being covered by Mowtom coincidently. What else can I say besides this is a team I wouldn't want to meet in a dark alley)
Mowtom: Eevee, Raticate, Persian, Muk, Gyarados, Moltres (Luckily this isn't an official comp so, if justified, Legendaries allowed! A pretty alright team even if Eevee is a bit underpower here, though I guess that's made up with Moltres, lol)
Hugin: Rhydon, Farfetch'd, Arcanine, Kingler, Vileplume, Persian (I really like the idea of this being a "placeholder" team that gets fully changed post game! Seems a bit cruel to just drop all these Pokemon, but then again we're talking about a Dark-type specialist here so makes perfect sense they'll drop their entire team when Pokemon they feel more fitting for them comes along)
CTNC: Arbok, Persian, Golbat, Parasect, Primeape, Gengar (A combination of both typical and unique picks, though reasons given justify each one individually)
Pikachu315111: Hitmonchan, Persian, Raticate, Fearow, Beedrill, Fearow (My team which I went over so not much else to comment on. If I were to rank them, I think Hugin's team would be above mine for sure)
MetalmindStats: Persian, Hypno, Electrode, Weezing, Gengar, Golbat (This really the first entry to have Weezing? Huh, well this has a bit more of a heavier Team Rocket feel even though that wasn't the suggested theme. Well, except the Gengar, would be an Arbok for a proper Team Rocket team; though wonder why Rocket Grunts didn't use more Gastly)
Ironmage: Raticate, Golbat, Arcanine, Aerodactyl, Dodrio, Victreebel (Going with the interesting angle of using vicious Moves, I like it. Adds in more Pokemon than you would normally think being "Dark")
Cobalt Empoleon: Golbat, Starmie, Vileplume, Gengar, Magneton, Clefable ("Space & Night", that odd theme which Dark sorta has; odd because Dark-type in Japan is "Evil-type". I can sorta see the connection, evil things are connected to the night. So using that loose connection to make an even looser connection by doing a space theme is some outside-the-box thinking. I'd give it a few votes)
Axiemeister: Rhydon, Parasect, Marowak, Persian, Golbat, Raticate (Hey, sorta my idea but you actually went all the way with it! Interesting to see how the team's Type dynamic changes between their Normal and Kantonian counterparts. Not sure if I'd given it any votes but you have my kudos)
jhm5: Muk, Arbok, Persian, Jolteon, Raticate, Gyarados (Ah, the "legal" version of Mowtom's team. Arbok is certainly up there as a fitting Dark placeholder, Golbat would be the popular choice, though Gengar and Vileplume has the Karen connection. Anyway I guess I can see a connection between Jolteon and Umbroen to have it be the Eeveelution placeholder, though in terms of tanky role I'd more lean Vaporeon)

BDSP Fairy was both easy as there was plenty of choices, but hard because what kind of team do yo go for? Especially since, as QuentinQuonce noted, there's really not much relating the 3 native Fairy-types together. And while there was obvious general themes to go with such as fantasy tropes and different kinds of magic, while one of those may very well win I still wanted to do something a bit "out there". Wasn't till looking down the entire dex and coming to where Cresselia (and the other Legendaries) were did I get my idea for a team (I may not be able to use Cresselia, which would likely been a shoe-in on most teams, but I can still theme around it...).

That said, I do feel there's one particular strong entry, the same feeling I had when I saw Lady Salamence's LGPE's Dark "Phobia" team, though I'll keep my thoughts to myself for now.

i must say, this has been my favourite round so far with regards to reading other teams. i downright felt bad not being able to give points to some people. something about fairies sparked everyone's creativity this round :sphearical:

CTNC

Doesn't know how to attack
Tied for fourth to last. Not last, but ouch... Probably didn't help that I happened to post my team right after someone with a theme that can be seen as a stricter and way stronger version of mine. At least I wasn't last again. :P

Congrats to Axiemeister for winning and jhm5 for being just 1 point from first. You two were my two favorites!

The biggest shock to me this round was no one used Cherrim. The Sunshine Form screams the cheerfulness you'd expect from cheerful fairies. I would've used them over Roserade if I hadn't gone with a cross gen evolution team.

And we have a new topic, thanks to our previous winner... an interesting one this time as, for the first time, we're off to Galar.

You are a Fighting-type specialist in the Crown Tundra. How do you best represent your chosen type?

A reminder to please read the guidelines in the OP before commenting, especially if you're new to the thread.

Crown Tundra Pokedex is here for those who need it. A reminder that you may only include the 210 Pokemon in the Crown Tundra Pokedex (i.e. Snom-Calyrex); any teams including Pokemon that appear in the Galar Pokedex or the Isle of Armour Pokedex but not the Crown Tundra's listing will be disqualified.

You have until September 12th, 9PM GMT to make your case!

At some level, it's liberating to consistently be placing low despite trying to shake things up with more or less focus on the movesets. If the reward for conforming is unobtainable, the pressure to conform is an illusion.

Anyway, for what is genuinely my first interaction with the CT as a place, there's Conkeldurr, and ... you know what, I'll stick with just Conkeldurr. I notice a clear ancient civilization vibe from the available dex, and Conkeldurr can fit into that with its lore around providing construction tips. I tried to lean towards mons that are/were noted as helpful to civilizations, while the five open slots perfectly matches the number needed to reflect the Regis found in the area.

:coalossal:
Coalossal @ Power Herb
Ability: Flame Body
- Spikes
- Scorching Sands
- Flamethrower
- Meteor Beam
Hazard mon out first. The Rock-type representative with obvious connections to industry. This team takes every opportunity to add special attackers, because the mon selection doesn't really lean that far, even if Coalossal lacks Power Gem to use a simpler moveset.

:conkeldurr:
Conkeldurr @ Flame Orb
Ability: Guts
- Mach Punch
- Drain Punch
- Stone Edge
- Facade
The main inclusion, running a standard Guts set. I chose to ensure it had a strong Normal attack since it's kind of the Gigas of the pseudo-Regi team.

:darmanitan-galar:
Darmanitan-Galar @ Wide Lens
Ability: Gorilla Tactics
- U-turn
- Icicle Crash
- Superpower
- Stone Edge
Easily mistaken for a Fighting type #1, though its dex entry also refers to it carrying supplies to people in need within its snow afro.

:corviknight:
Corviknight @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Mirror Armor
- Defog
- Iron Head
- Body Press
- Roost
Metagross potentially leans more towards Fighting in general with its signature punch move, but the utility theme brings the fast travel mon to the forefront. I don't necessarily like running my second-least-favourite Steel, but I'm putting a lot of effort to avoiding #1 on the list. Runs Mirror Armour specifically to reference the standard Regis' Clear Body

:electivire:
Electivire @ Assault Vest
Ability: Motor Drive
- Thunderbolt
- Focus Blast
- Volt Switch
- Earthquake
Well-known Fighting impersonator #2. The dex connection here is more tenuous here (though there's also much more competition in Ice), but using its output to power cities has at least been thought about. As with Coalossal, I need special attacks where I can find them.

:dragonite:
Dragonite @ Weakness Policy
Ability: Multiscale
- Dragon Dance
- Dragon Claw
- Brick Break
- Thunder Punch
Dragon is where the "helpful" bit falls apart, so I picked one of the least openly aggressive ones (that still learns Fighting moves) and skipped Outrage.

Team: :ss/lucario: :ss/golurk: :ss/mamoswine: :ss/druddigon: :ss/conkeldurr: :ss/stonjourner:

Reasoning:
:conkeldurr: :lucario:
These are the only two non-legendary Fighting types available for us to use! I don't like either as the ace though.

:golurk:
No Guard Dynamic Punch? Clearly this is a Machamp.

:stonjourner:
It only gets two fighting moves in Gen8 and both are by TR but it feels like it could fit here with its weird, ancient civilization-adjacent or construction related friends. It's also a Gen8 Pokemon and I like it as the ace. If we were in Paldea, it would definitely be the Tera target.

:druddigon:
This guy vibes with my other team members because it's like a gargoyle. Also uses Super Power like most of the other Pokemon here, and that would be the TR for sure.

:mamoswine:
Wanted to do something different and Mamoswine is another Superpower user, and fits more with the ancient-esque Pokemon on this team than some other options like the Nidos.

HMs: Nidoqueen, Nidoking (Superpower); Aggron, Tyranitar, Coalossal, Metagross. Tyrantrum (scary); Magmortar, Electivire, Darmanitan[-G] (fake Fighting types); Weavile, Grimmsnarl (mean looking); Greedent (it gets Body Press)
