Ferrothorn (Uber Analysis)

A Curse set is also useable due to Ferrothorn's great bulk and decent power especially with rain support, weakening Fire-type moves. However, Ferrothorn lacks a reliable recovery move making it hard for Ferrothorn to survive long.

Really? Does no one notice the handy Curse/Gyro Ball to raise an already spectacular defense and to strengthen a great move?

Ferrothorn is already so slow that using Curse doesn't have a noticeable impact on Gyro Ball's base power. I've tried it and it's really bad. Most of the times I cursed I'd have been better off attacking twice. The defense boosts don't do much either since the only attacks that can hurt you are Fighting-typed, which wreck you anyways. You're not winning a Curse war against Conklederp and the high powered Close Combat isn't helping either. Leech Seed is almost always a better option in that spot over Curse.

Include whether it is a boosting nature in the calcs please.

(just do 252/252+ if its boosting and keep it as is if not)

[Overview]

With Ferrothorn's excellent typing, defenses and movepool, it can provide a great role in any Ubers team. With its 10 resistances and 1 immunity, it can switch into many common threats such as Kyogre, Groudon, Palkia and Zekrom with ease. When its typing is combined with its support movepool, it can easily switch into a large number of threats and set up entry hazards such as Stealth Rock and Spikes and annoy and stay in opponents with Leech Seed. Its reasonable 94 base Attack also allows it to deal respectable damage back at to certain offensive threats. such as Kyogre and Groudon take considerable damage from with Power Whip and many other sweepers such as Mewtwo and Darkrai with fear Gyro Ball, which will almost always hit the maximum power thanks to Ferrothorn's minuscule 20 base Speed.

Ferrothorn can easily fill the role as be a great supporter with its excellent movepool and typing. It can switch into many sweepers and choiced users and set up entry hazards while the opponent either does little damage or switches. It can repeat this process many times and can aid a stall team greatly. Due to its great typing and decent Attack, it can not only wall certain Pokemon, but also maim Pokemon with its attacks. Power Whip such as deals significant damage to Kyogre, Tyranitar, Groudon and Palkia. as well as dealing Gyro Ball deals heavy damage to sweepers such as Mewtwo, Shaymin-S, Giratina-O and Darkrai. with Gyro Ball. This allows it Ferrothorn to take down certain setup sweepers thinking that they may attempting to boost up their stats while Ferrothorn sets up entry hazards and sweep. This makes Ferrothorn exceptionally hard to set upupon and take down. Its ability Steel Thorns allows it to wear down the opponent even further when the opponent makes contact with it. With a combination of Leech Seed and Protect, Ferrothorn can even stall out a sweeper.

Spikes is an obvious move for Ferrothorn. It can set up layers easily and wear down opposing Pokemon on switch ins. Power Whip takes down Kyogre and Groudon, which set up weather which that may be undesirable for one's team. Gyro Ball can deal heavy damage to frailer sweepers and prevents them from setting up. Leech Seed and Protect is are useful for wearing down the opponent as well as providing self-recovery, making Ferrothorn exceptionally hard to take down. Protect can also scout for moves that can KO Ferrothorn such as HP Fire and Fire Blast. If one's team lacks it, Stealth Rock is vital to hurt any switch in. Thunder wave may be used to cripple an opposing sweeper but should not be used with Gyro Ball as its power will be severely weakened.

[Additional Comments]

The choice between Power Whip and Gyro Ball depends on whether one fears Pokemon that can set up weather or fast but frail sweepers. If one prefers Ferrothorn to live longer and deal gradual instead of immediate damage, they should run Leech Seed and Protect over Gyro Ball and Stealth Rock. If a team already has a Stealth Rock user, then Ferrothorn may run Leech Seed over Stealth Rock. If Ferrothorn is not running Gyro Ball, a Careful nature may be used. If one's team fears Physical Sweepers more than Special Sweepers, then it may run 252 Defense EVs instead of Special Defense.

This makes Ferrothorn even harder to take down. Toxic Spikes support aids Ferrothorn when stalling out opponents with Leech Seed. Giratina-O is a great team mate for Ferrothorn as their typings complement each other well. Giratina-O can also take down Forretress, prevent it from Rapid Spinning and KO it. Ferrothorn fears the sun as it then is vulnerable to common Fire-type moves used by the opponent from Pokemon such as Ho-Oh, Reshiram, Palkia and Dialga.

[Set Comments]

While it seems absurd to slap a Choice Band on such a defensive Pokemon like Ferrothorn, it is surprisingly powerful and can take down many common switch-ins. Ferrothorn has a very reasonable base Attack of 94, which may seems still low in the Ubers tier until one realizes the power of its STAB moves, Power Whip and Gyro Ball. Due to Ferrothorn's exceptionally low speed, its Gyro Ball can almost always reach its maximum power and OHKO many offensive threats such as Mewtwo, Darkrai, and Shaymin-S Kyogre as well as while 2HKOing some defensive threats such as Arceus, Lugia and Giratina-O. Even Chansey is 2HKOed by a Choice Banded Power Whip. With such powerful moves, Ferrothorn can easily prevent bulky Calm Mind sweepers such as Kyogre, Arceus and Giratina-O from setting up on it and 2HKO common switch-ins on Ferrothorn, expecting the Support set.

[Additional Comments]

Due to Ferrothorn's unimpressive offensive movepool, the last two slots are mainly fillers. Level Ground can deal reasonable damage to Steel-types that resist both Power Whip and Gyro Ball such as Dialga, Jirachi and Arceus-Steel. Explosion can suicide itself to deal heavy damage to one Pokemon which could be used when Ferrothorn is at low health and Spikes can be used to avoid being set-up bait against something that Ferrothorn cannot harm Explosion is a powerful suicide attack Ferrothorn can use at low health, and can be used to prevent Ferrothorn from becoming setup bait. Leech Seed may also be used for self-recovery and to wear down opponents, but being locked into it would cause obvious problems, and likely force Ferrothorn to switch out but Ferrothorn would be locked into it so it must switch. This Ferrothorn is still very bulky despite such an offensive set as no Speed EVs are required due to its inablility to outrun anything. This allows it to take little damage from the opponent and then hit back with a Gyro Ball or Power Whip which can deal heavy damage effectively sponge hits while unleashing powerful attacks.

The following calculations prove how powerful Choice Band Ferrothorn is:

Gyro Ball vs. 4/0 Mewtwo - 99.4% - 117.2%

Gyro Ball vs. 4/0 Darkrai - 125.3% - 147.7%

Gyro Ball vs. 4/0 Shaymin-S - 119.6% - 141.1%

Gyro Ball vs. 4/0 Arceus - 72.3% - 85.1%

Gyro Ball vs. 0/0 Giratina-O - 66.7% - 78.5%

Gyro Ball vs. 32/0 Rayquaza - 89.4% - 105.3%

Power Whip vs. 0/0 Tyranitar - 112.4% - 132.6%

[Other Options]

Ferrothorn does not have many other options due to its limited movepool. Thunder Wave may be used to cripple common switch-ins to Ferrothorn at the cost of a weakened Gyro Ball. Explosion may be used as a last resort move or when Ferrothorn has fulfilled its job of setting up entry hazards and is preparing a sweep. Extra Attack EVs on the support set may help in taking down some setup sweepers by doing over 50% damage to them preventing them from setting up on it. A Curse set is also usable due to Ferrothorn's great bulk and decent power especially with rain support, weakening Fire-type moves. However, Ferrothorn lacks a reliable recovery move making it hard for Ferrothorn to survive long. Toxic is useful for crippling opposing Pokemon, preventing them from setting up on it as they will inevitably be worn down. Rest may also be used as it is the only way of it for Ferrothorn to recovering HP aside from Leech Seed, and it can allow Ferrothorn to regain health in order to set up again. A cleric is advised to be used with this set.

[Checks and Counters]

Pokemon that resist Ferrothorn's Dual STAB can comfortably switch in and set up and or KO it. Ferrothorn, however can set up entry hazards This includes Skarmory, Forretress, Steel-Arceus, Ho-oh and Reshiram. Just be aware that turns spent switching in or setting up are turns Ferrothorn can use to lay down entry hazards. Any Pokemon with Fire-type attacks in the sun can KO Ferrothorn easily. This includes Pokemon such as Palkia, Dialga and Rayquaza. However, in the rain, Ferrothorn is a little harder to take down even from with Fire-type attacks. Forretress can easily spin away anything Ferrothorn sets up and barely takes any damage back from Ferrothorn's attacks. Bulkier Pokemon can also set up on Ferrothorn provided they have a recovery move and decent defenses. This includes Arceus-Ghost and Lugia.

This sentence doesnt make any sense. Atleast I dont know about any attack called suicide.

My bad, fixed to:

Explosion is a powerful suicide attack Ferrothorn can use at low health, and can be used to prevent Ferrothorn from becoming setup bait.
I think this is a good sentence that states what you were trying to say.

Hmmmm someone posted above, brushing off curse, but imo curse Nattorei is very viable in ubers as a late game clean up poke, or a makeshift Kyogre check. Instead of focusing on his amazing defense for the curse set you want to max, or at least strongly invest in SpecD. I generally tend to run curse/leech seed/power whip/gyro ball with lefties. Bringing him in late game when many of his counters are out of the way, and preferablly when rain is up he becomes very tough to stop. Although granted it's somewhat gimmicky it's been working fairly well for me. The hp recovery off of leech seed and lefties is decent to say the least thanks to some very high HP stats on average. Just my two cents though.

Could Ferrothorn running setup benefit from Rocky Helmet over Leftovers? Combined with Iron Barbs, physical attackers lose 1/4 HP each attack, which is certainly some gimmick. Considering Spikes/StealthRock/Status seems to be its main purpose, is there any real advantage to keeping Ferro around for maybe one extra turn if you're lucky?

EDIT: Occa Berry, Quick Claw and Red Card come to mind as other 'novel' items, Red Card especially if you already have entry hazards set up.

I tried rocky helmet and the extra passive damage was nice, especially with leech seed + Protect for healing; you can make stuff like chomp stuck on outrage 2-3HKO themself while you take next to no damage and spike on them. Keep in mind that most things that actually attack ferro use non contact moves, though, so most of the time the healing is more useful.

There was a lot of errors involving serial commas. Whenever there is more than three things listed (Palkia, Dialga, and Giratina) there needs to be a comma before the and.

However, Ferrothorn lacks a reliable recovery move, making it hard for Ferrothorn it to survive long. Toxic is useful for crippling opposing Pokemon, preventing them from setting up on it Ferrothorn as they will inevitably be worn down. Rest may also be used as it is the only way for Ferrothorn to recover HP aside from Leech Seed, and it can allowing Ferrothorn to regain health in order to set up again. A cleric is advised to be used with this set However, using a cleric along with this set is advisable. Rocky Helmet is also an option in order to deal solid damage every time a physical attacker hits Ferrothorn. This is best used in conjunction with Leech Seed and Protect.

[Checks and Counters]

Pokemon that resist Ferrothorn's dual STAB attacks can comfortably switch in and set up or KO it. This includes Skarmory, Forretress, Steel Arceus, Ho-Oh, and Reshiram. Just be aware that turns spent switching in or setting up are turns Ferrothorn can use to lay down entry hazards. Any Pokemon with Fire-type attacks in the sun can KO Ferrothorn easily. This includes Pokemon such as Palkia, Dialga, and Rayquaza. However, in the rain, Ferrothorn is a little harder to take down even with Fire-type attacks. Forretress can easily spin away anything Ferrothorn sets up and barely takes any damage from Ferrothorn's attacks. Bulkier Pokemon can also set up on Ferrothorn, provided they have a recovery move and decent defenses. This includes Ghost Arceus and Lugia.

[Dream World]

Ferrothorn does not receive a Dream World ability.

Good job.
