Competitive Glitches in 4th Gen

By Ditto

Acid Weather

  • Cause: This Glitch occurs when Pursuit is used by the battle host to KO a switching Pokemon while Trick Room, Gravity, Uproar, fog, hail, sunshine, or sandstorm is in effect.
  • Effect: Depending on which "weather" is in effect when Pursuit is used, various acid weather effects can come into play.
    • Trick Room: Gravity, acid fog, acid hail, acid sun, acid sandstorm, and acid rain.
    • Gravity / Uproar: acid fog, acid hail, acid sun, acid sandstorm, and acid rain.
    • Hail: acid hail, acid sun, acid sandstorm, acid rain
    • Sun: sandstorm, sand rain
    • Sandstorm: sand rain
As you can see, there are 2 different types of weather produced, "acid" and "sand". Acid Weather uses one's ability to hurt them. So as Machamp takes damage it would read "Machamp was hurt by No Guard". Sand weather however, simply states "Machamp was hurt by Sandstorm (or Rain)". Chlorophyll and Solar Power are activated if acid sun is up. In addition, as long as their acid weather effects are up, Blizzard and Thunder both have 100% accuracy and Solarbeam doesn't take a turn to charge; however, it does 50% of the normal damage it would do.
  • Immunities: If acid hail isn't up, then Pokemon who are originally immune to Sandstorm are also immune to Acid Weather. If Hail is up as well, then Pokemon must be immune to both Hail and Sandstorm. Pokemon with the abilities Rain Dish, Ice Body, and Dry Skin will recover HP from each weather in effect until they are at 100%; after that they will get damaged.
  • Endless circles: Cherrim and Castform will change between their forms if Acid Sun and Acid Rain are up. This process creates an infinite loop within the form change, causing players to end the battle by turning off the game.
  • Getting rid of it: Acid Weather can be stopped by setting up a weather effect that isn't up already or sending in a weather Pokemon (Tyranitar, Kyogre, Groudon, Hippopotas, Hippowdon, Snover, or Abomasnow).
  • Games affected: Platinum, HeartGold, SoulSilver. It will show up in Diamond or Pearl, but a Platinum, HeartGold, or SoulSilver game must be hosting.
Choiced Pursuit

  • Cause: This glitch occurs when a Pokemon using Pursuit has a Choice Item equipped and the opponent's Pokemon switches out.
  • Effect: The choiced Pokemon is not locked into Pursuit and may choose another move the next turn.
  • Games affected: Japanese Diamond, Japanese Pearl
Choiced U-turn

  • Cause: This glitch occurs when a Pokemon using U-turn has a Choice Item equipped and switches to another Pokemon who knows U-turn.
  • Effect: The non-Choiced Pokemon is forced to use U-turn.
  • Games affected: Diamond, Pearl
Hitting through Protect

  • Cause: The effect occurs when a move has its accuracy raised to 100%. No Guard, Rain, and Hail can all account for this accuracy raise, but Wide Lens, Compound Eyes, and Gravity do not.
  • Effect: There is a chance that the move will bypass Protect/Detect. This chance is equal to the amount that the accuracy was raised. For example, Thunder's accuracy is raised by 30% in the rain, so there would be a 30% chance that Thunder will bypass Protect/Detect.
  • Move absorption: Abilities that absorb moves will still absorb them even if protect is up. These abilities are Dry Skin, Flash Fire, Motor Drive, Volt Absorb, and Water Absorb.
  • Games affected: Diamond, Pearl
Slow Start

  • Cause: When a move is used to get rid of the ability Slow Start, such as Skill Swap or Worry Seed.
  • Effect: Slow Start is no longer the ability, but the Pokemon must still wait 5 turns before the Attack and Speed drops end.
  • Games affected: Japanese Diamond, Japanese Pearl
Transform/Rage

  • Cause: This glitch occurs when a Pokemon transforms into a Pokemon that knows Rage. The transformed Pokemon must then use Rage and get the message "[Pokemon Name]'s Rage is building up" at least once. Then the Pokemon must run out of PP for all of its moves.
  • Effect: After the battle is over and the transformed Pokemon returns to its original form, it will retain the moves from the Pokemon it had transformed into.
  • Adding Mimic: When in a double battle, a Pokemon can use Mimic in order to copy Transform. Switch out the original Transformer (Ditto, Mew, or Smeargle) and switch in a Smeargle with 3 moves + Rage. Transform into this Smeargle and you will have a Pokemon with any 3 possible moves and Rage after the battle.
  • Games affected: Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold, SoulSilver

the gts cloning trick was covered in the 4th gen tips and tricks so it should be removed. I'll post more thoughts when i wake up.

There's also that "Thunder/Blizzard hit through Protect 30% of the time in Rain/Hail" glitch for DP.

How did that one work, exactly? Something like these moves having a "100-x%" chance of breaking through Protect where x is their accuracy in normal weather conditions? Did it apply to any other moves?

I will begin to look for this glitch and do some testing.

Ditto, it was pretty well tested back in one of the old research thread, IIRC.

Thunder\Blizzard in Rain\Hail added 30% accuracy on top of the base 70% accuracy in order to bring it to 100%. I think Protect was programmed "set accuracy of all moves targeting user to 0%". Except the accuracy boost for Thunder\Blizzard applied after Protect set accuracy to 0%, so instead they would have 30% accuracy.

Same goes for moves from Pokemon with No Guard hitting through Protect. The accuracy of the move would then be 100%-accuracy of the move.

I imagine that if the Protect user had raised its Evasion, then the accuracy of Thunder\Blizzard\No Guard through Protect would be boosted further. But I don't think that's been tested.

Pal Park glitch. Lets you import as many Pokemon as you want per day so long as you have multiple GBA games. Currently here, along with some other glitches.

The GTS evolution trick is in that article and in the OP. Also.. maybe it would make more sense to include this as a section of the other guide, otherwise their will either be overlap or things will be missing from one or the other. The article could be renamed "4th Generation Tips, Tricks, and Glitches". Unless you intended to restrict it to entirely in battle glitches, which are not covered by that article (though they could be)?

Adding them into the other article would be perfectly fine with me, as long as it's okay with mingot/macle.

Just remembered another one: Slow Start was bugged in Japanese DP and couldn't be properly Skill Swapped.

EDIT: And another thing just came to mind, although I don't know if you can call this a "glitch" per se. If you're really attentive, you can tell when the opponent is holding an evasion-boosting item because it takes slightly longer for your attack to register. I've been playing at the Battle Frontier a lot lately, and every time I'm up against a BrightPowder holder, there's just a slight pause between "Starmie used Surf" and the flash/SFX of the hit, as if there's an extra calculation done that pauses the action just long enough to be noticeable and telegraphing the opponent's evasion boost in the process. I believe this happens whenever any kind of evasion boost is in play (including Double Team, Sand Veil, etc.), but am not sure. I also doubt that you could reliably make use of it in wi-fi play since there's just so much random lag inherent to that in the first place.

Some of the wording for the Acid Weather glitch is awkward imo. "Sandstorm Rain?"

Also, you should list the priority of all relevant global effects (Trick Room, Gravity, Uproar, Fog, Hail, Sun, Sand, Rain) and note that activating the glitch from any one of these effects triggers all of those below it. In other words, activating it during Trick Room triggers Gravity as well. Notice that Lugia is hit by Earthquake.

Well I want to stress the fact that come up with different messages, there for I didn't want to put "Acid" for that too. Awkward wording will be fixed for the most part during GPs.

I basically do have the order, but in a way that is easier for people to understand in my opinion. Added the gravity thing.

Using tweaking to get Darkrai, Shaymin, and Arceus could probably be added here as well. Not sure exactly how it happened, but I know it only affected DIamond and Pearl.

In Jimbo's original thread, tweaking was turned down, so I didn't include it.

You might want to mention the Elite Four Aaron's Door glitch and how it can be used in early Japanese Diamond and Pearl games to get Darkrai and Shaymin.

Not sure if there are any other glitches to post, so this is what I have. Note that both tweaking and the Surf glitch were already turned down in the previous thread.

Once again, really good, only a few mistakes that I could find.

Hi Ditto, I found one error.

As you can see, there are 2 different types of weather produced, Acid and Sand. Acid Weather uses one's ability to hurt them. So Heatran's damage would read "Machamp was hurt by No Guard". Sandstorm however, simply states "Machamp was hurt by Sandstorm". Chlorophyll and Solar Power are activated if Acid Sun is up. In addition, as long as their Acid Weathers are up Blizzard and Thunder both have 100% accuracy and Solarbeam doesn't take a turn to charge, but it does 50% the normal damage it would do.

I have made the change in bold. The original was 'if.'

This is very interesting and I hope to try it out soon. Thanks!

Acid Weather

· Cause: This Glitch occurs when Pursuit is used by the battle host to KO a switching Pokemon while Trick Room, Gravity, Uproar, fog, hail, sunshine, or sandstorm is in effect.

· Effect: Depending on which "weather" is in effect when Pursuit is used, it will change what other various acid weather effects can come into play.

o Trick Room: Gravity, acid fog, acid hail, acid sun, acid sandstorm, and acid rain.

o Gravity / Uproar: acid fog, (I think you get the idea) Acid Hail, Acid Sun, Acid Sandstorm, and Acid Rain.

o Hail: Acid Hail, Acid Sun, Acid Sandstorm, Acid Rain

o Sun: Sandstorm, Sand Rain

o Sandstorm: Sandstorm, (comma) Rain (the grammar standards state that weather effects are not capitalised. I presume this also applies to acid weather effects)

As you can see, there are 2 different types of weather produced, “acid” and “sand”. Acid Weather uses one's ability to hurt them. So asHeatran's damage Machamp takes damage it would read "Machamp was hurt by No Guard". Sandstorm however, simply states "Machamp was hurt by Sandstorm". Chlorophyll and Solar Power are activated if acid sun is up. In addition, as long as their acid weather effects are up Blizzard and Thunder both have 100% accuracy and Solarbeam doesn't take a turn to charge;however, it does 50% of the normal damage it would do.

If Hail is up as well, then Pokemon must be immune to both Hail and Sandstorm. Pokemon with the abilities Rain Dish, Ice Body, or Dry Skin will recover HP until they are at 100%, and then they will get damaged. (you need to make this more clear. I understand that Walrein receives HP from all of the weather effects, not just hail)

· Endless circles: Cherrim and Castform will change between their forms if Acid Sun and Acid Rain are up. This process creates an infinite loop within the form change, causing players to end the battle by turning off the game.

· Getting rid of it: Acid Weather can be stopped by setting up a weather effectthat isn't up already or sending in a weather Pokemon (Tyranitar, Kyogre, Groudon, Hippopotas, Hippowdon, Snover, or Abomasnow) after the Pokemon is KOed by Pursuit.

· Games affected: Platinum, HeartGold, SoulSilver (Is this when one of these is the host, or when one of these is merely involved)

Choiced Pursuit

· Cause: This glitch occurs when a Pokemon using Pursuit has a choice item equipped and the opponent's Pokemon switches out.

· Effect: The choiced Pokemon is not locked into Pursuit and may choose another move the next turn.

· Games affected: Japanese Diamond, Japanese Pearl

Choiced U-turn

· Cause: This glitch occurs when a Pokemon using U-turn has a choice Item equipped and switches to another Pokemon who knows U-turn.

· Effect: The non-choiced Pokemon is forced to use U-turn.

· Games affected: Diamond, Pearl

Hitting through Protect

· Cause: The effect occurs when a move has its accuracy raised above its normal rate (not by gravity though for example). No Guard, Rain, and Hail can all be causes account for this accuracy raise.

· Effect: There is a chance that the move will bypass Protect/Detect. This chance is equal to the amount that the accuracy was raised. For example, Thunder's accuracy is raised by 30% in the rain, so there would be a 30% chance that Thunder will bypass Protect/Detect.

· Move absorption: Abilities that absorb moves will still absorb them even if protect is up. These abilities are Dry Skin, Flash Fire, Motor Drive, Volt Absorb, and Water Absorb.

· Games affected: Diamond, Pearl

Slow Start

· Cause: This glitch occurs when a move is used to get rid of the ability Slow Start, such as Skill Swap or Worry Seed.

· Effect: Slow Start is no longer the ability, but the Pokemon must still wait 5 turns before the Attack and Speed drops end.

· Games in: Japanese Diamond, Japanese Pearl

· Cause: This glitch occurs when a Pokemon transforms into a Pokemon that knows Rage. The transformed Pokemon must then use Rage and get the message "[Pokemon Name]'s Rage is building up" at least once. Then the Pokemon must run out of PP for all of its moves.

· Effect: After the battle is over and the transformed Pokemon returns to its original form, it will retain the moves from the Pokemon it had transformed into.

· Adding Mimic: When in a double battle, a Pokemon can use Mimic in order to copy Transform. Switch out the original Transformer (Ditto, Mew, or Smeargle) and switch in a Smeargle with 3 moves + Rage. Transform into this Smeargle and you will have a Pokemon with any 3 possible moves and Rage after the battle.

· Games in: Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold, SoulSilver

Changes are in blue and removals in red. Sorry about all the text changing size and making it look horrible.

GP Check 1

Pokemon with the abilities Rain Dish, Ice Body, and Dry Skin will recover HP from each weather in effect until they are at 100%; after that they will get damaged.

Take note of the semicolon. Good work.

Great job, VERY few errors.

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this or if anyone else has discovered it before.

This is a glitch I remember mentioning way back in Spring but I don't know if anyone picked up on it, it is a glitch to extend daily swarms in Hg/Ss:

I just discovered a neat glitch for keeping a swarm of pokemon active for more than one day:

- Save the game on a day where the swarm of pokemon you want is active
- When it is the next day or a few days over, reset the clock on your DS backwards to before midnight.
- Turn on your game, check and the swarm of pokemon you want should still be active. However since you reset the time but not the day, the game will keep the current day yet will have that swarm from the previous day today.
- Save your game
- Change your clock back to the proper time.

I noticed this when I realized I had missed the Chansey Swarm yesterday, it was around 12:30 am so I reset my clock to 11:30 PM, turned on my game but realized that the pokegear was saying it was 11:30 PM on Friday and not Thursday since the Calendar day changes separately. Noticed I still had a swarm of Chansey, I then saved my game, set the clock correctly to 12:40 and then saw I still had a Chansey swarm as a result (instead of the Baltoy swarm that was suppose to come the next day).
