Deoxys
--------
[Overview]

Deoxys is a great Pokemon, with great offenses—150 in both attacking stats and Speed—as well as access to Spikes and Stealth Rock. However, Deoxys's potential is overshadowed by its alternate formes, Deoxys-A and Deoxys-S. Deoxys-A has the same Speed stat and greater offenses, whereas Deoxys-S has much more Speed. However, because it is bulkier than Deoxys-A and has better offensive stats than Deoxys-S, Deoxys can, with some EV adjustments, outperform its other formes in a supporting role, proving its own worth as a competitive Pokemon.

[SET]
name: Support
move 1: Stealth Rock
move 2: Spikes
move 3: Shadow Ball
move 4: ExtremeSpeed
item: Focus Sash
ability: Pressure
nature: Naive
evs: 112 Def / 146 SpA / 252 Spe
[SET COMMENTS]

You might think that anything Deoxys can possibly run will be outclassed by its alternate formes. However, this support set, with a more balanced EV spread, can give it a good matchup against most foes. Although it has poor Defense, some extra EVs will allow Deoxys to take hits from most opposition; notably, ExtremeSpeed from Deoxys-S will not 2HKO it. Opposing Deoxys-S can be beaten with a combination of Shadow Ball and ExtremeSpeed, making the opponent really think about whether they should attack, Taunt, or set up entry hazards. The final two moveslots consist of entry hazards, Deoxys's blazing speed and Focus Sash allowing itto set them up quite easily, providing excellent support for offensive teams.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Because of Team Preview, the usefulness of Deoxys may be hindered. Accordingly, there are a few extra options that can be used over Shadow Ball to give you the element of surprise against would-be counters. Hidden Power Fire can be used to KO Ferrothorn and bring Forretress down to 1 HP due to Sturdy. It is important to note that Team Preview can allow the opponent to lead with a Tyranitar, which OHKOes Deoxys with Crunch and sandstorm damage. Superpower can therefore make a good choice for Deoxys, as it OHKOes Tyranitar as well as denting Blissey and Dialga. Darkrai will beat Deoxys in a lead matchup with Dark Void. A Scizor can be useful to combat Darkrai, provided that something can be used as sleep fodder.

[Other Options]

While there are many other options that Deoxys can run, it is unfortunately outclassed in all of them by Deoxys-A. Deoxys can run an offensive Calm Mind set, with a Focus Sash to increase its chances of netting an extra Calm Mind. However, it will be beaten by the likes of Giratina-O and Arceus, who carry priority moves. Also, entry hazards are a common sight in Ubers, so it is likely that Deoxys's Focus Sash will be broken quite easily. Again, though, Deoxys-A outclasses the standard forme for this role.

Thunder will allow Deoxys to emerge victorious against Kyogre in a lead matchup, as Thunder + ExtremeSpeed is a clean KO. Ice Beam can deal massive damage to Dragon-type Pokemon such as Latios, Latias, Rayquaza, and Salamence, and in the latter two cases, it will OHKO. It will also deal hefty damage to Groudon.

[Checks and Counters]

When faced with Deoxys in a lead matchup, beating it is a matter of great prediction, as it can either choose to set up entry hazards or justattack outright. Choice Scarf Kyogre can defeat Deoxys, only allowing it to set up one layer of entry hazards. Kyogre does take massive damage from Thunder if Deoxys carries it though. Bulky Pokemon can set up on Deoxys as it sets up entry hazards. Groudon is a prime example; Shadow Ball and ExtremeSpeed do pitiful damage, and Groudon can proceed to set up Rock Polishes (and possibly Swords Dances), and placethe opponent's entire team in jeopardy. Groudon must be wary of Deoxys that carry Ice Beam, however. This also applies to certain Dragon-type Pokemon, who are OHKOed by Ice Beam. Choice Scarf Dialga and Palkia are neutral to Ice Beam and can outspeed and kill Deoxys. Giratina can survive two Ice Beams and can pick off Deoxys with Shadow Sneak. Darkrai can put Deoxys to sleep with Dark Void and proceed to set up on it. Deoxys's attacks won't do much damage to Darkrai, except Thunder and Superpower. Scizor can put Deoxys under pressure, because it can trap and KO Deoxys with Pursuit, or KO it with U-turn or Bullet Punch, the latter having priority.
