Project Core Analysis Workshop (Discussing Partners for Mega Sharpedo + Tank Chomp)

Not open for further replies.
Just like Princess Aurora had to beware of cursed spinning wheels, this core has to be careful with this metallic thorn-filled fellow. And, ironically enough, it can spin as well (with Gyro Ball)!

Ferrothorn @ Leftovers
Ability: Iron Barbs
EVs: 252 HP / 88 Def / 168 SpD
Relaxed Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Leech Seed
- Gyro Ball
- Power Whip

Ferrothorn can be a true thorn to this duo's sides. With its impeccable defensive typing and stats, it can take all attacks thrown by this core and retaliate hard with Gyro Ball or Power Whip.

Vs. Tyranitar

252 Atk Tyranitar Crunch vs. 252 HP / 88+ Def Ferrothorn: 91-108 (25.8 - 30.6%) -- 1.6% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 Atk Tyranitar Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 88+ Def Ferrothorn: 75-89 (21.3 - 25.2%) -- possible 5HKO after Leftovers recovery
0 Atk Ferrothorn Gyro Ball (150 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Tyranitar: 284-336 (83.2 - 98.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Ferrothorn walls Tyranitar completely and can use it as Stealth Rock/Leech Seed fodder, or just straight up attack and do heavy damage with Gyro Ball.

Vs. Manaphy

+3 252 SpA Manaphy Scald vs. 252 HP / 168 SpD Ferrothorn: 103-122 (29.2 - 34.6%) -- 99.9% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery
+3 252 SpA Manaphy Scald vs. 252 HP / 168 SpD Ferrothorn in Rain: 155-183 (44 - 51.9%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
0 Atk Ferrothorn Power Whip vs. 96 HP / 0 Def Manaphy: 246-290 (67.3 - 79.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

Basically Manaphy can reliably 3HKO Ferrothorn if it has a Tail Glow under its belt and it is raining. Meanwhile, Ferrothorn can 2HKO Manaphy with Power Whip or put it on a timer with Leech Seed. Granted, Ferrothorn doesn't appreciate burns and Power Whip may miss at the wrong times, but overall it is a nice answer to the marine Pokémon. Only recommendation: watch out from potential HP Fire!

Chesnaught @ Salac Berry
Ability: Bulletproof
EVs: 12 HP / 244 Atk / 252 Spe
- Substitute
- Belly Drum
- Seed Bomb
- Drain Punch

Chesnaught takes advantage of Scarf Tyranitar by setting up a Belly Drum in its face, outpace both members with Salac Berry and OHKO them with its STAB moves.

Thoréal (Ampharos) (M) @ Ampharosite
Ability: Static
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
- Agility
- Thunderbolt
- Dragon Pulse
- Focus Blast

While M-Ampharos can't switch into Tyranitar's Earthquake (or Stone Edge if it does hit twice in a row), it doesn't fear being 2HKOed by any other move from the core and can setup an Agility before outspeeding and OHKOing both members with the appropriate move.
252 Atk Tyranitar Pursuit vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Mega Ampharos: 66-78 (20.4 - 24.2%) -- guaranteed 4HKO after sandstorm damage
252 Atk Tyranitar Crunch vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Mega Ampharos: 129-153 (40 - 47.5%) -- 1.2% chance to 2HKO after sandstorm damage
252 Atk Tyranitar Stone Edge vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Mega Ampharos: 160-190 (49.6 - 59%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after sandstorm damage
252 Atk Tyranitar Earthquake vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Mega Ampharos: 214-254 (66.4 - 78.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after sandstorm damage

252+ SpA Mold Breaker Mega Ampharos Focus Blast vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Tyranitar in Sand: 456-540 (133.7 - 158.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO
160 SpA Manaphy Scald vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Mega Ampharos: 46-55 (14.2 - 17%) -- possible 6HKO
160 SpA Manaphy Psychic vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Mega Ampharos: 70-83 (21.7 - 25.7%) -- 1.9% chance to 4HKO
+3 160 SpA Manaphy Psychic vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Mega Ampharos: 174-205 (54 - 63.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252+ SpA Mold Breaker Mega Ampharos Thunderbolt vs. 96 HP / 0 SpD Manaphy: 386-456 (105.7 - 124.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Lopunny-Mega @ Lopunnite
Ability: Scrappy
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Fake Out
- High Jump Kick
- Return
- Power-Up Punch

Bunny is a scary Pokemon for this core, although standard. Tyranitar is a free invitation for Lopunny to HJK or PuP, and a +1 Lopunny isn't pleasant to deal with. Manaphy takes 60.2 - 70.9% from HJK, and 90.4 - 106.3% after a PuP. If you take Fake Out + SR damage into account, the damage is even more :o Because Lopunny is still faster than Scarf Tyranitar with Adamant, it's possible to drop Jolly for more power if you don't mind being slower than things like Tornadus-T.

Pinsir @ Pinsirite
Ability: Hyper Cutter
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance
- Return
- Close Combat
- Quick Attack

Although it has fallen out of favour recently, Mega Pinsir is a nice partner for this core as it can smash past Mega Sceptile, Mega Lopunny, Chesnaught and Ferrothorn while also easily breaking past Mega Ampharos, Suicune and Mega Altaria once it attains a Sworda Dance boost (which it can get since they can't OHKO it. Watch out for Scald though). Using Mega Pinsir also allows you to run a different coverage move over Psychic on Manaphy (Ice Beam hits Garchomp, Zapdos and Thundurus while Energy Ball hits bulky Waters) to get rid of pesky opponents. Sadly, Mega Pinsir also has trouble breaking past Unaware Clefable by itself unless said Clefable is burned.

Aye aye! What do mah eyes see? But if it isn't ol' pal Mega Altaria, the versatile captain of the clouds and Mr. Cotton Candy!

Altaria @ Altarianite
Ability: Cloud Nine
EVs: 248 HP / 104 Def / 156 SpD
Relaxed Nature
- Roost
- Return
- Heal Bell
- Flamethrower

Alright, quick question: what kind of Pokémon do Tyranitar and Manaphy not like? Tyranitar isn't a fan of Fighting-types and random Focus Blasts, while Manaphy hates fast Electric-types and Grass-types with all its guts. And Mega Altaria is very well capable to check those threats, as well as provide a very useful Heal Bell to remove damaging status, which is something that Tyranitar, Manaphy and many other Pokémon greatly appreciate. Hyper Voice is also a valid option that can go through Substitutes, but make sure to change the Nature to Bold in case you want to use it.

But for every service there should be a service back, so what do Tyranitar and Manaphy offer to this cloudy fella? They both can get rid of Heatran, Charizard Y, Talonflame and other similar Fire-types, which would otherwise wall Mega Altaria all day and night. Also, Tyranitar is an effective solution against Gengar, while Manaphy can help soften Poison-types like Mega Beedrill and Mega Venusaur (even though it should be careful with its Giga Drain).

Vs. Threats
0 Atk Pixilate Mega Altaria Return vs. 248 HP / 104+ Def Mega Altaria: 236-282 (66.8 - 79.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
0 Atk Pixilate Mega Altaria Return vs. 248 HP / 136+ Def Mega Altaria: 230-272 (65.1 - 77%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
0 SpA Pixilate Mega Altaria Hyper Voice vs. 248 HP / 96 SpD Mega Altaria: 240-284 (67.9 - 80.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Mirror matches can be a pain for Mega Altaria, especially if they are against the speedier variants. Try to scout the opponent's Mega Altaria before trying to use your own.

252 SpA Mega Sceptile Leaf Storm vs. 248 HP / 156 SpD Mega Altaria: 96-113 (27.1 - 32%) -- guaranteed 4HKO
0 Atk Pixilate Mega Altaria Return vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Mega Sceptile: 390-462 (138.7 - 164.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO
0 SpA Pixilate Mega Altaria Hyper Voice vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Mega Sceptile: 314-372 (111.7 - 132.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO

0 SpA Suicune Scald vs. 248 HP / 156 SpD Mega Altaria: 33-39 (9.3 - 11%) -- possibly the worst move ever (you got what it said!)
0 Atk Pixilate Mega Altaria Return vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Suicune: 102-121 (25.3 - 30%) -- 0.1% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery
0 SpA Pixilate Mega Altaria Hyper Voice vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Suicune: 121-144 (29.9 - 35.6%) -- guaranteed 4HKO after Leftovers recovery

Mega Altaria can potentially stall out Suicune, while also being able to heal eventual burns with Heal Bell or regain energy with Roost. Beware of the Calm Mind boosts, especially if you use Hyper Voice.

0 Atk Ferrothorn Gyro Ball (110 BP) vs. 248 HP / 104+ Def Mega Altaria: 170-204 (48.1 - 57.7%) -- 91.4% chance to 2HKO
0 SpA Mega Altaria Flamethrower vs. 252 HP / 168 SpD Ferrothorn: 216-256 (61.3 - 72.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

While Mega Altaria can't switch in on Ferrothorn unless unevolved, it is still capable to outspeed it and burn it to cinders with Flamethrower.

+6 244 Atk Chesnaught Seed Bomb vs. 248 HP / 104+ Def Mega Altaria: 172-203 (48.7 - 57.5%) -- 94.1% chance to 2HKO
+6 244 Atk Overgrow Chesnaught Seed Bomb vs. 248 HP / 104+ Def Mega Altaria: 258-304 (73 - 86.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
0 Atk Pixilate Mega Altaria Return vs. 12 HP / 0 Def Chesnaught: 264-312 (82.5 - 97.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
0 SpA Pixilate Mega Altaria Hyper Voice vs. 12 HP / 0 SpD Chesnaught: 348-410 (108.7 - 128.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252+ SpA Mold Breaker Mega Ampharos Thunderbolt vs. 248 HP / 156 SpD Mega Altaria: 80-94 (22.6 - 26.6%) -- 26.2% chance to 4HKO
0 Atk Pixilate Mega Altaria Return vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Mega Ampharos: 300-354 (93.1 - 109.9%) -- 56.3% chance to OHKO
0 SpA Pixilate Mega Altaria Hyper Voice vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Mega Ampharos: 254-300 (78.8 - 93.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252 Atk Mega Lopunny Return vs. 248 HP / 104+ Def Mega Altaria: 132-156 (37.3 - 44.1%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
0 Atk Pixilate Mega Altaria Return vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Mega Lopunny: 326-386 (120.2 - 142.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO
0 SpA Pixilate Mega Altaria Hyper Voice vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Mega Lopunny: 284-336 (104.7 - 123.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO

0 SpA Clefable Moonblast vs. 248 HP / 156 SpD Mega Altaria: 164-194 (46.4 - 54.9%) -- 58.6% chance to 2HKO
0 Atk Pixilate Mega Altaria Return vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Clefable: 136-162 (34.6 - 41.2%) -- 66.5% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
0 SpA Pixilate Mega Altaria Hyper Voice vs. 248 HP / 8 SpD Clefable: 148-175 (37.6 - 44.5%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

The best way to beat Clefable would be by stalling it out during its Wish+Protect moments and applying continuous offensive pressure. Otherwise, if you really fear it and/or other setuppers, another option would be to use Haze, in order to remove eventual boosts.

Tornadus-T

Tornadus-Therian @ Assault Vest
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 136 HP / 120 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Knock Off
- U-Turn
- Heat Wave
- Hurricane

Tornadus-T is a very good teammate for the core of Tyranitar and Manaphy. Looking at the threats to the core posted eariler, you can see that grass types are a very common threat. Tornadus-T beats all of the grass types in the tier (unless I’m missing something). It has Hurricane for Celebi, Mega Venusaur, Mega Sceptile, Chesnaught and Breloom, and it has Heat Wave for Ferrthorn. Tornadus-T is also great for providing momentum with U-Turn which helps Manaphy get free set-up opportunities or Tyranitar can come in and Pursuit the mon for chip damage. Tornadus-T and Manaphy also have very similar switch ins (electric types like Raikou, Magnezone, Rotom-W, Mega Manectric, and Thundurus) which helps them break for each other. After a few times of them coming in on Torn-T, Manaphy should be able to pick them off with Scald. Once the grass and electric types are gone, and the latis are pursuited, Manaphy is free to sweep. Also, Tornadus-T really appreciates getting 100% accurate Hurricanes from Manaphy’s Rain Dance.

Having to choose 3 out of 4 as best partners isn't exactly going to be that challenging

More nominations would be greatly appreciated

Medicham @ Medichamite
Ability: Pure Power
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Fake Out
- Bullet Punch
- High Jump Kick
- Zen Headbutt

I think Bisharp is the better Dark type for this core but TTar works too.

Medicham hates the likes of Slowbro, Latis, Cresselia, Mega Sableye and some Clefable variants which Tyranitar and Manaphy cover really well. Tyranitar pressures Slowbro along with Manaphy threatening Scald burns, Latis OHKO MegaCham but get easily trapped by Tyranitar, Cresselia gets crippled by TTar and ruined by Manaphy when weather is up. Mega Sab walls MegaCham and ScarfTar but Mana is capable of pressuring it easily with Tail Glow + Rain Dance. Same with Clefable sets as Clefable can't check Medicham very well and Manaphy appreciates Unaware variants being weakened for it to pick off with a Rain boosted Scald

Ferrothorn

Ferrothorn @ Leftovers
Ability: Iron Barbs
EVs: 252 HP / 88 Def / 168 SpD
Relaxed Nature
- Stealth Rock / Spikes (slashing because it doesn't affect the core and depends on the rest of the team)
- Leech Seed
- Gyro Ball
- Power Whip

When I was looking through my compendium with the core, I noticed that the Choice Scarf Tyranitar and Manaphy were pretty weak to Azumarill, Mega Altaria, Mega Gyarados, and Rotom-w, other Manaphy, and water types in general. Ferrothorn does a really good job against a majority of water type mons, excluding Keldeo. Ferrothorn can come in on physical Mega Altaria, but not mixed attacking Mega Altaria. I guess if Manaphy has used Rain Dance you can switch in Ferrothorn to Mega Altaria regardless, but it is not really that hard to just scout and figure out what set Mega Altaria is running. Ferrothorn is also able to switch into Azumarill, another problematic mon to the core of Manaphy and Tyranitar. Without Energy Ball on it's moveset, Manaphy is not beating Azumarill unless it gets a Scald burn. Ferrothorn is a pretty good Azumarill switch-in with the exception of a Choice Band Superpower. Ferrothorn can wall Mega Gyarados reliably and pressure it out with Power Whip; the same thing happens with regular Gyarados. Rotom-W is another annoying mon to the Manaphy and Tyranitar core, and Ferrothorn provides a switch-in to Rotom-W. It might not be the most suitable mon to be your Rotom-W counter because it doesn't really like Will-O-Wisp burns, but it can pivot into Rotom-W if you don't need Ferrothorn for anything else. Lastly, Ferrothorn can beat Manaphy lacking Hidden Power Fire (which again, a Rain Dance from your Manaphy can help with). Besides beating the aforementioned mons, Ferrothorn can set up hazards which Manaphy really appreciates on the opponent's side of the field, and it can provide Leech Seed support, which Manaphy also likes to give it more set-up opportunities and survive-ability.

New core:

Thundurus @ Life Orb
Ability: Prankster
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Thunder Wave

Hoopa-Unbound @ Life Orb
Ability: Magician
EVs: 160 Atk / 96 SpA / 252 Spe
Hasty Nature
- Dark Pulse
- Gunk Shot
- Drain Punch
- Psychic

Thundurus is generally a threat to offensive teams and helps Hoopa with T-Wave support. Hoopa on the other hand smashes balance easily. It also takes very little damage from Raikou (one of the best Thund answers on offense) and can heavily dent ground types such as Hippowdon for Thundurus.

Discuss threats

Weavile @ Life Orb
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Icicle Crash

Weavile can outprioritize Thundurus' T-Wave and will it with an Ice Shard with a little bit of prior damage or good roll after Stealth Rocks, Hoopa just drops to a Knock Off, especially with a -Def nature. Gonna expect to see some ground scarfers to answer this core since nothing really takes a T-Wave and survive Hoopa's attack.

252 Atk Life Orb Weavile Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0- Def Hoopa-Unbound: 329-387 (109.3 - 128.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 Atk Life Orb Weavile Ice Shard vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Thundurus: 218-257 (72.9 - 85.9%) -- 81.3% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock

EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Earthquake
- Outrage
- Stone Edge / Fire Blast
- Dragon Claw / Fire Blast

Either get a free switch in or switch into a Thunder Wave or Thunderbolt from Thundurus and click Outrage, simple as that. Outrage decimates both Hoopa and Thundurus fairly easily, not even needing any prior damage on Hoopa for the guaranteed KO. Thanks to its Ground-typing, it can't be paralyzed by Pranster Thunder Wave either, making it really fear only HP Ice. It can take a single hit from either of them from full health, as long as it isn't HP Ice, if it really needs to.

252 Atk Garchomp Outrage vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Thundurus: 262-309 (87.6 - 103.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock

the threat is here

AV Raikou already beats Thundy as it is and Hoopas main use on this core is to check Raikou, which it just falls flat on its face against Specs or Signal Beam variants. Signal Beam doesn't sacrifice too much of your coverage as you still hit Psychics and you deal more damage to Celebi and Serperior.

Survives a hit from both Thundurus and Hoopa-U so it can mega evolve against both pokemon without much problems and OHKO with Waterfall. Thundurus can also not T-Wave you to support Hoopa-U. Both pokemon might even give you a free attack boost because you can PuP the turn you mega evolve and outspeed and kill Thundy / Hoopa the next turn. It costs you one turn of rain more but you don't lose any more health.

Outspeeds both Pokemon in Sand, can't be paralyzed by Thunder Wave and OHKOes both Pokemon with Rock Slide and Earthquake respectively. It also gets in easily against Thundurus, only fearing Focus Blast. Try not to get over eager to switch in against Hoopa-U since Dark Pulse and Drain Punch both OHKOes it (although it can get in on a resisted Psychic and Gunk Shot)

Volcarona can OHKO Thundurus with a Fire Blast after setting up one Quiver Dance. It can outspeed Hoopa-U and hit it with a Bug Buzz. Lum Berry is nice against Thundurus so it gets a free turn if it uses Thundurus, and doesn't lose speed.
