Silly Things You've Seen In Other Metagames

I watched a lot of replays on showdown so I've seen some really baffling stuff. But this one takes the cake.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/anythinggoes-272840076

Turn 18. Wow.
This battle is a complete disaster. Turns 17-18 are only the crux of it:
Turn 17
Linoone used Belly Drum!
Linoone lost 50% of its health!
Linoone cut its own HP and maximized its Attack!
Linoone ate its Sitrus Berry!
Linoone restored HP using its Sitrus Berry!
The opposing Delcatty used Hyper Voice!
Linoone lost 24.2% of its health!
Turn 18
Linoone, come back!
Go! Dragonite!
The opposing Delcatty used Play Rough!
It's super effective! Dragonite lost 36.1% of its health!

#GetPredicted #WhyAreYouSwitchingItsOnlyADelcatty

Meanwhile, the left side also has:
  • Brick Break/Focus Blast Dragonite. Are you done murdering Steels?
  • Fire Blast/Lava Plume/Rock Slide Typhlosion. Well, it hits...something? Also, it's not choiced, so redundant STAB is redundant, and by the way, where's your Eruption?
And on the right?
  • Strength/Overheat Blaziken. This isn't Gen IV, buddy, everybody can use Return. Also Normal Coverage is Best Coverage.
  • Flamethrower (apparently lures some things)/Fly/Dragon Rage Zard-X. Dragon Rage is what I'm getting seeing this.
  • Body Slam/Foul Play/Thunderbolt Persian. We're all well aware the Original 151 have some wacky movepools.
  • Hyper Voice/Play Rough/HP Something (neutral on Typho) Delcatty. I mean, really, what's the point?

In this replay, both teams were pretty bad for a Balanced Hackmons standard. The best thing I saw from it was a Sturdinja. What completely baffled me, however, is one of them used a Magikarp with Focus Sash...

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/balancedhackmons-272971461 (the magikarp is brought out the first turn)

Turn 1

The opposing Magikarp used Rain Dance!
It started to rain!

Goodra used Power Whip!
It's super effective! The opposing Magikarp hung on using its Focus Sash!
The opposing Magikarp lost 99.5% of its health!
Turn 2
Raymond Quaza joined.

The opposing Magikarp used Dragon Pulse!
It's super effective! Goodra lost 6.7% of its health!

Goodra used Aqua Tail!
It's not very effective... The opposing Magikarp lost 0.5% of its health!

The opposing Magikarp fainted!

Okay, I have a sizable amount of battles that I think I'll compile them all together, as well as start a AG laddering Journal (Note: I might not be able to consistenly post entries in it).

Speed Boost Deoxys-S. Gotta go fast.

Two double protects on Sableye. Best hax 2015. Not that it mattered.

I take that back about best hax. 3 Swagger misses. Also, brb gotta add Disable to the Darkrai analysis.

The sets that we saw (except Air Balloon Houndoom) weren't that bad tbh, just bad mons.

Someone thought STAB Technician Fake Out would break Klefki's sub. Someone thought wrong. Reason #45644151 why Ambipom sucks.

Alright, here's a batch.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/anythinggoes-272999535
Too much to put in narrative forme here.
Left Side:
  • Air Balloon Houndoom. Turns out the Aegislash facing it had Sacred Sword. Bye.
  • Heat Wave/Flame Charge Rocky Helmet Ninetales. At least use a freaking Heat Rock, will ya?
  • On a positive note, this Electivire put in some serious work, and Vital Spirit isn't such a bad ability to have with Darkrai running amok. Kudos.
  • Gengar with Curse, which did stay alive long enough to finish the game off.
  • No mega, even though Gengar is one of the best and hell, even Houndoom isn't terrible. (Still suboptimal in this environment.)
Right Side:
  • Aegislash apparently missing Shadow Sneak, based on the endgame play.
  • Mega Gengar with Giga Drain accomplishing precisely nothing.
  • Bragging about Alomomola's massive HP just in time to take a Solar Beam to the face. The Wish gets off, but then, inexplicably, Momo chooses to Aqua Jet, in the sun, after taking a Solar Beam to the face, and promptly breaks itself.
  • Lansat Berry Yveltal. It did get a crit, but an unnecessary one, and was promptly revenged.
  • Gengar out on an obvious Shadow Ball...Aegislash in. At least it survived, and we have all been there.
  • Darkrai with Return, which it used on Gengar. The only Dark resist on left's team was dead, so no reason not to click Dark Pulse.
http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/monotype-273005592
"I wasn't thinking", said left after sending in Diancie on Doublade, then using Diamond Storm. The Def boost didn't save her. He then went on to use CC on the same Doublade. Right side, for its part, needlessly sacks its wincon, Excadrill, against a rampaging Barbacle, resuting in this game being a lot closer than it should have been.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/anythinggoes-273008051
TIL Flygon gets Boomburst. There were a couple of highly questionable switches here (3, 5) and an unhealthy obsession with Psychic coverage on the right (Mega Absol, Audino).

http://pokemonshowdown.com/replay/ounomega-273098228
Technically an OM of sorts...right guys....?
still. Regional rodents vs gen one garbage

http://pokemonshowdown.com/replay/customgame-273097186
FEAR my forfeit
http://pokemonshowdown.com/replay/anythinggoes-273097853
more FEAR, but apparently this one was too strong for 5 mewtwos and a charizard

http://pokemonshowdown.com/replay/anythinggoes-273096775
Same FEAR guy, different dumb guy. Features type chart ignorance, bad move choices and triple electric coverage pikachu(and pikachu itself)

http://pokemonshowdown.com/replay/balancedhackmons-273091421

Garbage 'mons and sets alongside that conversation tho.

The opposing Lapras's Quick Claw let it move first!

The opposing Lapras used Horn Drill!
Rice lost 100% of its health!
The opposing Lapras is hurt by Rice's Rocky Helmet!
It's a one-hit KO!

Rice fainted!

Sigh...
What is this, the Maison? And that's not even doing it right--the reason you use Quick Claw OHKO is to abuse Sheer Cold. It hits everything in the entire Dex bar Shedinja, and more importantly, it's not a contact move.

Also, TIL Lapras gets Horn Drill.

Anyway:

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/anythinggoes-273330992
Draco/Shadow Force Ghostecus. Also, since when does Zam need something paralyzed? Oh, and switching is a thing, y'all.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/anythinggoes-273332323
Left's Houndoom seems to think itself under perpetual Torment. As a result, CM Lugia is able to set up all over it.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/anythinggoes-273333629
No, Strong Jaw does not boost Super Fang. Also, I'm not even sure what troll team left is running (although it's at least with Swift Swim Feebas rather than Magikarp).

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/monotype-273334863
Left gets walled by a no-attacks Forretress. There's also a Fly Mandibuzz getting owned by Galvantula, but just watch the first few turns.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/pu-273337464
Flame Orb Noctowl. Alrighty then. Also, if you're going to use the name of a celebrity as your alt, at least spell her name right. Poor "Caitlin" gets swept by MoxieYena.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/hackmonscup-273699273
Ditto using Searing Shot and Sludge Wave against a Primordial Sea Aron, Diggersby using Dig on Pidgeot, and Icy Wind Hitmonchan using Icy Wind on said Pidgeot, which turned out to have Speed Boost.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/monotype-273700458
Non-mega Ampharos with Brick Break.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/anythinggoes-273699072
How not to use status moves.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/anythinggoes-273700647
Ice Beam normal Rayquaza induces forfeit in 2 turns. Okay, it did kill a Gliscor, but still.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gold-monotype-47637
Possibly the same Ampharos as before, revealing itself to have Cotton Guard and a Rocky Helmet. Neither one saved it from an Outraging normal Kyurem.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/anythinggoes-273700037
Another normal Rayquaza, this time failing against a Steel mono. And that's an interesting Dialga set.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/anythinggoes-273697991
Double-Edge Mega Aggron, Roar being used on Espeon, and several mons that have no business being used in AG.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/anythinggoes-273703645
Mono Water team beats a team with 2 Primal Groudons and yet another normal Rayquaza, which did not mega evolve despite having Dragon Ascent. Some strange sets being put into play as well, namely Origin Pulse+Surf Primal Kyogre and a very out of place Sigilyph.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/randomtriplesbattle-273703670
Right had Trick Room Cofagrigus and Speed Boost Ninjask on the same side. Left had some type chart issues.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/anythinggoes-273703885
Pachirisu, and when I saw that Dusknoir change moves, the first thing I thought was "please let that not be Assault Vest." Later that same turn, Gallade used Knock Off on it. Guess what item it was.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/anythinggoes-273704634
Lone Darkrai gets a sweep, partially due to hax, partially due to the one naturally faster mon (Aerodactyl) switching in on Dark Void, and partially due to Scarf, but with Frustration, Thundurus-T.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/eos-monotype-95271
Fun fact: Ditto can't use Hyperspace Fury even if it's transformed into Hoopa-U.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/monotype-273703846
Tricking a Choice Scarf onto Jirachi? Yeah, dude, you kinda asked for that one.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/anythinggoes-273703563
CM+Dazzling Gleam normal Gardevoir, and Cotton Guard will not save Altaria from a +4 Mega Mawile.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/anythinggoes-273709047
Oddish and Clamperl, the latter with DeepSeaScale.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/eos-monotype-95321
That awkward moment when Dragonite sets up on Azumarill. It would have swept, too, had it not been for Unaware Quagsire.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/monotype-273711166
Non-Sturdy Skarmory is definitely not an answer to Emboar.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/hackmons1v1-273707323
Well, this is awkward...

If at first you don't succeed (Toxic on Heatran, Will-O to activate Flash Fire, two Magic Bounce fails)...and why wasn't that Heatran just destroying everything with Flash Fire Fire Blast/Lava Plume/whatever it had?

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/anythinggoes-273703563
CM+Dazzling Gleam normal Gardevoir, and Cotton Guard will not save Altaria from a +4 Mega Mawile.
Dat Bone Rush Lucario used on Gourgeist tho. Gourgeist got a double Protect, Night Shade Gengar, and right side gets a 6-0 on its first game (on that alt, anyway).

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/eos-monotype-95321
That awkward moment when Dragonite sets up on Azumarill. It would have swept, too, had it not been for Unaware Quagsire.
Whiffing four Play Roughs didn't help, I imagine. There was also the mispredict on 12 where Dragonite thought Azu had had enough and went for the Dragon Claw. Also loving how left threw nearly everything at the Dragonite before the Unaware Quagsire. Right, meanwhile, sent Kyube into an obvious Secret Sword and had to switch around to preserve the 6-0.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/anythinggoes-273730291

I made an intentionally terrible team, just to see how far I could get with it. This battle kinda speaks for itself.

Highlights of my team: HP Water PDon/HP Fire POgre, Snore Groudon, Sunny Day Groudon, Scratch/Solar Beam(no sun) Blaziken, Aguav Berry Avalanche Mewtwo, etc.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/anythinggoes-273732661

Still some very stupid stuff.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/anythinggoes-273734009

This nearly gave me cancer.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/anythinggoes-273734989
Least stupid match so far.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/anythinggoes-273735218
Oh my.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/anythinggoes-273738154
Stupidity at its finest, he won that match several times over.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/anythinggoes-273742624

Swagger misses 3 times in a row. Not that it hurt righty all that much, especially since lefty had 4 mons and no clue what the type chart looks like.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/monotype-274329282
Normal mono gets a pretty decisive win over Rock mono, albeit one that had Magcargo and sent in Tyranitar against Mega Lopunny.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/anythinggoes-274328145
A couple more Swagger misses, along with Giga Drain Ferrothorn, Aerial Ace Genesect-Burn screwing over Double Team Swellow, and Furfrou trying, unsuccessfully, to stall out said Genesect.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/monotype-274329061
Skuntank used Sucker Punch! Mamoswine avoided the attack!

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/anythinggoes-274328462
It's one thing to face a Red team. It's another thing entirely to play like that against it.

Soundproof Perish Song 1, Imprison+Transform 0.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/anythinggoes-274334888
More type chart fails and bad moves, Facade Flame Orb Shiftry, normal Charizard (a near requirement on my posts like this), plus: Weavile used Ice Shard! Dragonite avoided the attack!

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/anythinggoes-274334428
FEAR meets Rayquaza team. And FEAR wins.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/anythinggoes-274331861
Weird team by lefty, righty stacking hazards on the last mon, and Focus Sash Flare Blitz Talonflame new meta.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/anythinggoes-274335045
A team of what I'm assuming to be 6 Moody Bidoof only needs one, and a Secret Power paralysis, to defeat a lone Togekiss.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/monotype-274334519
Galvantula 6-0 where the opponent didn't even get damage onto it until the last turn.

My turn.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/monotype-274356073
Yeah, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say you shouldn't give the one thing that sweeps your entire team a free turn.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/anythinggoes-274357565
TIL Gengar gets Metronome. The lone Gallade opposing it brought no Psychic STAB, and is reduced to helplessly flailing away.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/anythinggoes-274358481
All Ghosts on the left. Weavile proceeds to go to town (with Night Slash, which fails to crit once). Highlights include Dusknoir spamming Ice Punch instead of EQ that worked decently well. Weavile is then scared out by a Trevenant, of all things, leaving Mega Sableye and Munchlax to finish things off. Oh yeah, there was a Munchlax, and Frosslass used Shadow Ball on it.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/anythinggoes-274359946
Um, right side, you want rain to go with that mono-Water? Apparently not until turn 12, at which point two mons have already dropped. Featuring Teeter Dance Ludicolo, Starmie succumbing to Toxic damage as Milotic stalled it out, and somehow Absol fell to a Brick Break, securing the sweep anyway.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/anythinggoes-274362656
Strong Pokemon...weak Pokemon...wait, why is my team getting roflstomped? But the left side isn't perfect either: non-Power Herb GeoXern and Primal Groudon being scared out by a Vaporeon. The Karen-speech team? Dig Umbreon, Return/Waterfall Vaporeon (we'll give Hydration a pass, I guess, but 65 Atk is inexcusable), and Return non-Guts Flareon. Oh, and Eevee and Friends time out, leading to some...ungentlemanly behavior from the winner.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/balancedhackmons-273005925

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/battle-anythinggoes-274495277
I'll post more later, but for now a logic problem:
So you've got a team with decent mons, but 4 of them are Dragon-typed, thus, they're weak to Dragon-type attacks. Of your 2 Dragon neutralities, one fainted. The opponent has a Mega Rayquaza that has just used Outrage, killing one of your Dragon shenanigans. Which is the last Pokémon you'd switch in?
This guy's answer: Groudon, his last Dragon-neutrality.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/customgame-274518457 This seems to be a Mega Cup (or whatever it's called) battle.

(R) Mega Mawile gets cheeky, thinking it can set up a Swords Dance on Mega Lopunny. It gets 2HKOed.
(R) Mega Kangaskhan apparently lacks Fake Out, because Mega Lopunny one-shots it. I could see not running it if you don't need to Mega safely, but then why send it in?
(L) Mega Lopunny runs Focus Punch -- what, is HJK not cutting it?
(R) Fails to punish Mega Lopunny's arrogance -- Mega Lucario sets up a Nasty Plot and is one-shotted by Mega Lopunny.
(R) After setting up a Dragon Dance (Which I can see I guess, it can survive the HJK and KO back), Mega Charizard X uses... Earthquake. It does not OHKO Mega Lopunny, and Mega Lopunny KOs it in return.
(L) Uses High Jump Kick on Mega Latios, when we KNOW it's not choiced. This, incidentally, means that Mega Lopunny is Adamant.
(R) Mega Latios takes the opportunity to set up sneaky pebbles. So apparently this ISN'T a purely Mega Cup battle, though one then wonders what exactly is permissible in terms of normally-illegal moves.
(L) Switches Mega Lopunny out of Mega Pinsir, allowing the latter to set up a Swords Dance. It's not like Right has attempted to set up literally every time it didn't get KOed immediately or anything.
(L) Runs a Mega Rayquaza that is slower than Mega Pinsir.
(L) Sacs Mega Charizard Y and Mega Kangaskhan for no apparent reason. Not that either was likely to do a ton of work, but they could at least be switch fodder against Mega Latios.
(L) Runs a Mega Diancie that's slower than Mega Pinsir. It gets OHKOed.
(L) Runs a FUCKING MEGA SALAMENCE that's slower than Mega Pinsir. It gets OHKOed.

tl;dr Lots of thoroughly terrible plays on both sides, and Left makes some questionable-at-best teambuilding decisions.

EDIT: Here's another: http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/customgame-274527909 I won't question the 'mon choices, because for all I know there's some kind of condition on that, but:

(L) After putting Typhlosion to sleep, Darkrai decides to spam Dark Void until it wakes up. Once, maybe twice is excusable, but at a certain point you should figure out that the opponent isn't gonna switch.
(L) Doesn't bother attacking Typhlosion after it wakes up, instead going for Disable. It doesn't take.
(R) With a crit and two flinches (and, potentially, speed tie wins), Typhlosion gets extremely lucky and takes out Mega Charizard X with three Rock Slides.
(R) What, Sharpedo doesn't use Protect? Save for Espeed, that could actually check Mega Ray with like, Ice Beam or Ice Fang. It doesn't. Oh well.
(L) Body Slam Mega Mewtwo X. It manages to KO Greninja, but unsurprisingly, it's less effective against Gengar.
(R) Shadow Claw Gengar. Does decent damage to Mega Mewtwo X on a crit, but is otherwise exactly as weak as you'd expect.
(L) Mega Mewtwo X uses Drain Punch on Gengar with expected results, then switches out. Honestly it's hilarious to watch Gengar wall stuff.
(L) Air Balloon on KyuB.
(R) After Focus Blasting KyuB to within an inch of its life, Gengar goes for the Focus Blast again. I can maybe see wanting to catch Dialga on the switch, but given that KyuB is about to KO you with Fusion Bolt, a more reliable move would be advisable. Fortunately for Right, it pays off.
(L) Uses Earthquake on Gengar. I would almost write this off as a genius attempt to fish for Destiny Bond, but then it uses Draco Meteor the next turn anyways into that Destiny Bond.
(L) Decides that Body Slam is the best move for Mega Mewtwo X to use on Mega Lucario, even though Drain Punch would OHKO and heal Mewtwo back up nicely, leaving it in a nice position to handle Electivire. Mega Lucario KOs it with Crunch.

So I tried out BH today, and even though I don't play it often, I think I can tell good from bad.

Shell Smash Simple Slaking that is obliterated by Imposter Chansey, salt over Sturdinja, among other things.

Swept it too fast to see movesets, but they were probably as bad as the plays and the mons.

General AG stupidity

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/anythinggoes-274475007
This is an example of true AG. Full Swagplay vs. swagplay walls. This was honestly one of my favorite battles in the tier. Hilarious, too (damn you hax!).

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/anythinggoes-274483430
No, I don't know what's wrong with his team. If anyone wants to log it or something feel free.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/anythinggoes-274525381
A terrible riolu+truant durant team. Without a trapper. Why would I not switch?
I think I actually posted somewhere in this thread a replay of the same guy with the same shit team.

Actually, on some teams, non-Imposter Chansey can be a practical addition. The Fur Coat variant in particular can beat -ates 1v1, making it a good Chansey set.
Yes, one of the most common BH stall cores is Fur Coat Chansey + its Imposter variant.

Okay, I just watched that replay. That Chansey was horrible. I guess Leftovers isn't all its cracked up to be.

Yeah, sometimes there are a few things from Standard that carry over into BH.
