Every review I've seen has said this is a must-try for anyone with even a passing interest in RPGs. I guess I'll pick it up and give it a try, at the very least.

Considering getting this to waste my life awya after exams. Is it worth it? How much fun is it? How far are you guys through the story? Approx. how many hours of gameplay (assuming I dont fuck about but dont play hardcore eitehr)?

I'm getting the game in a couple days and I wanted to know the best race that can duel wield magic in one hand and a sword in the other. I know every race can do it, but which one is the best. And what are the differences between enchanted weponds and normal weponds. Is one better than the other? I'm basically looking for the race that can utilize magic and swordsmanship the best. I'm thinking it's the Dark Elf?
Dark Elf gets the instant bonus to Destruction that you need and since one-handed levels pretty quickly (in my experience) in comparison that is probably your safest bet. Imperials also start with 20 Destruction and 20 One-Handed as well as 25 in Restoration, which is super handy as well for a spellsword, and Redguards strangely also start with 20 in Destruction and 25 in One-Handed for a more melee-oriented version of a dunmer

Dark Elf if you're planning on going a sneakier route (the alchemy and illusion bonuses are handy), Imperial or Redguard if you want more focus on the magic (Imp) or melee (Redguard) imo

Estimates are putting the total amount of gameplay at 500 hours. It's incredible the amount of depth and detail they put into this. I haven't found a single negative thing about it since the bugfixes from the scene groups.

I agree, Bass. Being a mage in Oblivion was ridiculously easy. God Mode was easily attainable thanks to access to enchanting and spellmaking; I walked around as a Breton in just enchanted clothes and jewelry, and the only thing that could kill me was falls from high places and (eventually) arrows. Besides those 2, I could stand in a freaking war, and watch everything die without lifting a finger. So when I hear that magic isn't as powerful, I am happy. In addition, I agree with not taking the easy way out. It's only fun for a short while, but then you realize the game is amazingly boring.

@k13: If you wish to lean toward magic more, I'd say either the Dark Elf or the Breton, though neither start with any bonus points in One-Handed; Dark Elves start with the highest Destruction (+10), as well as +5 Light Armor. Bretons don't get any points in Destruction, but they do get +10 Conjuration, so you could technically just focus on getting Bound Spells for your weapons. In addition, you have +5 in Alteration and Restoration, increasing your survivability in fights.

However, if you wish to lean more toward the physical side, I'd say Redguard. +10 One-Handed, +5 Destruction and Alteration. 'Nuff said.

I find the talks of Magic being weak quite ironic. In Oblivion, far to the contrary, Magic was pretty was pretty OP, especially if you picked Breton as your race with their 50% Spell Absorption perk. Additionally unlike in Skyrim, you could make spells in Oblivion as well as greatly increase your total Magicka with Sigil Stone enchanting. That said, I found mages to be among the more difficult enemies I have faced in Skyrim. I am currently rolling a pure melee Nord with a full set of Daedric Armor and a Lightning Daedric Sword. At my current level, I have no problem taking hits from Giants, but I die much more quickly when fighting against 3 Sith Lords spamming Lightning at me.

Regardless of whether you are playing on the PC or a console, I believe the most fun way to play Skyrim is to take the role playing aspect very seriously, instead of being the most powerful god character. Many exploits like the one mentioned by matt are common in this game, but they will only ruin your experience if you choose to use them. I may have a high smithing skill, but that decision was purely cosmetic, as I personally liked the intimidating look of Daedric Armor. For me, as a pure melee character, I play the role of a dragonslayer. I generally do not commit evil acts unless I absolutely must, and I only use magic to enchant my weapons, so I don't plan on joining the Thieves Guild, Dark Brotherhood, or College of Winterhold. Additionally, I didn't join either the Imperial Legion or the Stormcloaks since I am trying to be righteous and not pick a side in the war, not to mention the only thing that matters is my deep hatred for the Thalmor, whom I kill on site.

I know that might sound a bit contrived or even cliched, but it really is a more rewarding way to play. I am already planning on starting a second character very soon, as I still wish to play this way while exploring all of the other factions in this game.
this, when i complete quests i do them a certain way, in the endgame i just go nuts with 100% chameleon or whatever. i just started this and am up to the quest where the girl wants you to get the golden claw or something like that

due to my average graphics card i experience visual lag which makes the game a bit of a pain to play, but i'll live.

rolling a khajiit thief type character like i usually do, using dual daggers and the bow. haven't gotten anywhere yet but i've walked aimlessly through skyrim and the environment is absolutely beautiful. have got some levels in archery, one-handed and sneak so i'll be set pretty soon

There are a few tweaks you can make to the SkyrimPrefs.ini if you're having any mouse lag or graphics tearing. Also if you're having any problems selecting options from menus using a mouse, turn off the Xbox 360 controller option in the main Gameplay Settings.

Currently on lvl 26 taking care of some older miscellaneous quests before continuing on the main one. Finally decided to explore the further reaches of the map instead of focusing on finding everything in a certain area, I've just reached Rifton (walked the entire way from Whiterun).

My character is a Dark Elf who mains the bow, but has an enchanted mace and shield for close quarters. The mace has the Fear enchantment, so I hit stuff with it and they run away so I can shoot them. Been neglecting magic a lot, only really focusing on Restoration and Illusion and haven't really felt like I'm missing out at all. If you want to get Smithing up really quickly, make lots of Leather Braces; they take 1 leather and 2 leather strips.. but I'm not really worrying about that too much anymore since it does sort of take the fun out of the game if you worry too much about stats and skill levels ;_;

Yeah i found, Smithing is really the easiest Skill to Lvl up, while some things like Conjuration take fucking forever. I am currently Lvl 15 and have Conjuration 29 even tough i always summon a Flame Atronach in battle and sometimes even outside of it simply because it takes so long to Lvl it up :/. Destruction on the other hand lvls up just right and isn`t really underpowered at all for me if you reach destruction 40 you get a perk that stuns when casting an overcharged spell wich helps a lot against stronger foes.
I find the Dragons a little disappointing tough, they were introduced way to early in the game and are way easier than some "normal" Monsters like stonger Bears or Ice Wraiths wich can take me down in seconds (well Dragons can do that too, but are a lot easier to dodge), but hey maybe it gets tougher later in the game.
A big problem for me is that most dungeons seem to be pretty boring because they don't got background stories and are generic Bandit Hideouts/Monster Caves compared to Fallout3/NV where a lot buildings contained some notices about the history of the building, but maybe it just seems like this because i have stopped reading the incredible dull Books. Its a shame that most of them only contain semi-intresting background information about the history of the world instead of hinting to a quest/dungeon/treasure somewhere in Skyrim.
The favorite system is a pretty cool idea, but would be twice as good if they would be ranked compared to how often you use them (or if you could simply sort them), instead of being in alphabetical order.
However overall the game has been pretty great so far, simply because there are a lot of quests and most are pretty intresting.

Ok, I realised my last post was when I was still on the fence on this one, so I thought I would update.

I love this game. It is incredible.

My one complaint is the fact that my companion is immortal. I love having her around, but, I dont love the fact that I feel like I am cheating.. Also things would be really fucking hard without her.

I am still trying shit out with combat, atm I am erring on the side of melee except when long range, but, I am also finding that long range against other magic users I am kinda fucked.

Ok, so I was walking across country from rorisktead to markarth, and I come to a small cliff and at the bottom there is this hagbird whatever thing shooting spells at me, and like I say, at long range I have to rely on a lot of potions to kill magic users, so I jump down there and hack her to pieces.

However, I find that I cant get back up to where I was. And it turns out this little clearing isnt just a hagbirds camp, it's part of an entire cannibal village. I could run through it and out the other side, but Lydia is too stupid to not immediately engage every enemy we meet.. And sure she is immortal, I could just leave her there, but I dont really think that is the sort of behaviour MUNCH! would ever forgive herself for.

Though at the end, I did accidentally murder a couple of the villagers who for some reason didnt actually engage but they were on fire before I realised, and they didnt seem likely to forgive and forget. However they were heathens and as I later discovered, cannibals, so I think MUNCH! could sleep after that.

It took me a few reloads to fight my way out of that one..

What diffuculty do you play it on? Im on the default (Adept) and im basically untouchable. Im lvl 20 though so thats probably why but even still if you build correctly this game is a breeze. My main character is a DW Sword Orc built around its species skill Berserkers Rage. (Doubles dmg for 60 seconds 1 time a day). at the start of my adventure i would use it to take out dragons with ease and stick out some tight situations. as the levels progressed i got better gear namely the blade's katana you get from delphine's secret stash in her inn (its on the sword rack). also i managed to pick up the blade of woe from the dark brother hood questline which is relatively simple enough. im pretty sure blade of woe is the best sword in the game with it enchantment.but anyways you can do that stuff and once you get your gear your basically untouchable or another easy mode tactic is to become a werewolf early on something i didnt know about till i was already godmode status.

Really? Because she kept getting in my way and I accidently shot her in the back of the neck and now she's dead :( I had to spend like half an hour transporting all the shit I made her carry!

Companions are in no way immortal, it's just that when they do the dropping to their feet animation they drop aggro. This is great, cause Lydia tanks for me and she'd have died in every encounter otherwise. See I decided I wanted to do everything and as a result at level 25 I'm good at nothing and without Lydia and potions bandit chiefs beat the shit out of me. Since Lydia doesn't really have all that much HP or do all that much damage either, it still makes some encounters really hard.

Oh neat!

I also did have another question I wanted to ask but forgot. Uhh.. I have killed like 6 Dragons, but I still only know 2 shouts. I have a bunch of others but cant use them without a dragon soul. Do I need to soul capture them or something, or do I need to kill specific dragons, because even the dragons guarding their own words havent taught me anything..

Or is it just that every word I have found so far is not the first in the sequence.

Also I really havent specialised either, I only just decided to stop wearing mixed combinations of armor, and have gone with light armor, even though historically in my experience light armor is useless. But the elven armor actually looks like armor, so I might just stick with it, I havent seen glass armor in this game, but I expect it is still hideous..

But I am only at level 13 or so..

You learn the shouts from the writing which can be found on the wall in certain places. Once you killed a dragon, you absorb its soul, which then you can use to unlock shouts by going into magic menu, selecting a shout and pressing R.

If you're not sure what to use, remember you don't have to spend perk points right away. Keep them until you've decided which skills you want to specialize in, it's not that hard to catch up in terms of skills if you decide to wear different kind of armor, but you're pretty much screwed if you invest too much perk points into one tree then switch. And IMHO all of the armor in the game looks pretty decent, even glass one :toast:

I just started playing this, I got it Friday but didn't touch it until yesterday, MW3 was occupying me, haters gonna hate. But anyways, I liked Oblivion, but never thought it was like OMG BEST GAME EVAR. I think the main reason why I liked Oblivion so much was because of the landscape and graphics at the time. But now that we're 5 years later I don't really care much for graphics now, and most games look good enough. Not saying that the graphics in this game aren't amazing, because the landscape is second to none. Except when you get up close and personal to some things, which is to be expected.

But I played for about 4ish hours yesterday, got up to level 6. I chose an Imperial, because they seemed to be able to fight with magic and one handed weapons, which is what I wanted to do, and they also find a lot of gold, which is nice. I almost have enough to buy a house if I wanted to, and I'm not that far into the game. And I've carried my Fallout tactics of just picking up almost everything and selling it.

First thing I love about this game compared to Oblivion is the level up system. I wasn't fond of the level up system at all. It feels like I'm actually making progress and getting stronger in Skyrim. Also I never really used magic in Oblivion, but magic is too cool to pass up in Skyrim. I'm gonna max out Destruction as much as I can. It doesn't feel underpowered or anything, so far. But I didn't use magic in oblivion so I figured, what the hell, might as well try it out.

The pure amount of shit to do in this game seems pretty crazy. Everywhere you go there is someone who needs help with something, so within the first like 10 minutes of the game, outside of the first quest, I had a bunch of things to do. And you have choices in what you want to do, like go clear out a dungeon, do the main quest, go to winterhold, go to that Bard college place they were talking about, explore, or just go fuck around killing everyone <_<.

But yeah, I knew this game was going to be good, but man is it really good. The combat feels so much cooler, and I love the favorites menu. It seems like a step up from the Fallout 3 radial Dpad piece of shit. I love the skill upgrade system, and I love that dungeons aren't cut and paste. You can tell they put a lot of time and work into this game, and it really shows. As I said, I liked Oblivion, didn't love it, but I love this game so far.

So essentially:

1) You believe mods that enhance graphics, and put forward new story lines and quests are terrible and "ruins" the essence of the game, which is total fucking bollocks. There are thousands of mods for games that were great as it was, that totally improved the gameplay further. Sure, there's some shitty mods that no one downloads, but there are always the gems that further enhance your enjoyment of the game. You would have to be completely irrational to even try to counter this.

Let's put it this way: the developers and the studio are not creative or graphical gods. There will always be someone else who will put the time and effort to enhance whatever the original creators have done.

2) You believe every person who buys it for PC will pirate it. An even more retarded opinion. Skyrim was the most highly played game on Steam when it first came out, especially with competition from MW3, and TF2/CS, which have always boasted high numbers.

You don't have to like PC gaming, but you really shouldn't spout random bullshit trying to justify why it is. If you dislike PC gaming, then just fucking say it, without trying to sound all uppity and intelligent, while making a fool of yourself.
whoa there calm yourself, neither of those is what he said at all

okay so i just got another new sword called Dragonbane. Its found in Sky Hven Temple, a place you have to go during the main quest line. It's dmg cap is equal to all other high tier weapons but it has two very great enchantments: +23 dmg to dragons and +10 shock dmg to normal foes.

but in this case I definitely think Bethesda deserves the money.
just to clear up any misconceptions, you do know that Bethesda is making more money off sales of the PC version than the console versions right? This is doubly true if you purchase from Steam directly as opposed to retail.

he essentially said having a PC version is bad because of piracy and that mods ruin the game because they are not made by the developer. i'm sorry, but the level of stupidity in his statements warrants that kind of response.

anyways, the only real problem i have (outside of standard bugs/glitches) is the awful, awful UI. after 39~ hours of playing, i can safely say this is the most unintuitive, wasteful UI i have ever had the displeasure of using for a video game. kb/m controls are imprecise, often leading me to quit conversations or shopping because i clicked in the wrong area, the menus are extremely tedious and wasteful (you have to go to press tab > magic > magic effects and then scroll to see what kind of active effects you have on! every time!), and the navigation of skills is retarded. i know they had consoles in mind with this but even then, there is so much wasted space and menu navigating.

i cannot wait for mods to clean this up. it's really the only glaring negative about the game.

Ok guys, I need some serious help! Skyrim is going to be my first RPG and I need help on the class I'm going to make.

I've decided I'm going to be a Battle-Mage. So, I had to pick between Dark Elf and Redguard. I liked Dark Elf's abilities better so I picked him.

Now, I have no clue what to level up his perks in. I want him to be a pseudo 1 Handed Sword and Magic in the other hand. What should I level him up in, and between Dark Elf and Redgaurd; did I pick the right person.

just lvl the first perk in the onehanded tree and the rest in destruction. theres differents type of one-handers but if u want to go pure swords u can also lvl the one handed sword perk thats the 2nd perk in the tree.and ya dark elf is good i think.

I've already spent a ridiculous amount of time on this game, and I have to say... I REGRET NOTHING!

I'm a level 41 High Elf battle-mage (levelling Destruction, Conjuration, Restoration, and One-Handed first), and I've had a lot of fun with it so far. I've completed all of the missions for the College of Winterhold, Companions, Dark Brotherhood, and Thieves Guild. I'm not done with the main quest yet; I generally leave it until much later on in my play throughs. I don't know if I can be bothered with the Bards College, but I guess I'll check it out.

I too found Destruction to be kind of underpowered from the 50+ mark as my enemies got increasingly stronger, but once I hit 100 and I unlocked Lightning Storm, it's been a lot better (although Fire Storm and Blizzard are kind of disappointing for master spells). I didn't have too much trouble as I had conjured allies and whatever one-handed weapon I was using at the time to fall back on (often just a Bound Sword). Being able to permanently conjure up allies again is awesome!

I don't often get excited for new games, but I'm glad I did with this one. Having been on board since Morrowind, I'm not disappointed. There have been some glitches here and there, and I'm sure it could use a few patches to balance things out a bit, but I've come to expect these sorts of teething issues from games of this magnitude. Great game overall! :)
