vs. bbqmudkipz (03/25/2010)

The Bradley team is back! This time (as of March 26, 2010*) it had 4 battles that are worth becoming warstories. The second one is bbqmudkipz wanting a rematch with a different team.

elephantdog's (Me) team:

bbqmudkipz's team:

elephantdog sent out Ledian.
bbqmudkipz sent out Azelf.

vs.

Ledian – 100%
Azelf – 100%

Since this Azelf is a lead, I'm pretty sure it's going to use Stealth Rock but it's so frail that I should scare it away by attacking it. Ledian is very capable of attacking.

Azelf used Stealth Rock.
Pointed stones float in the air around the foe's team!
Ledian used Bug Buzz.
It's super effective!
Azelf lost 100% of its health.
Azelf hung on using its Focus Sash!

vs.

Ledian – 100%
Azelf – 1%

I usually use Knock Off first turn then Encore the second if the other lead is slower and used Stealth Rock or Spikes or Toxic Spikes but Azelf is faster than Ledian so I went with Bug Buzz. Azelfs always hold Focus Sash so I knew it wasn’t going to be knocked out fight away.

bbqmudkipz switched in Infernape.
Ledian used Knock Off.
It's not very effective...
Infernape lost 1% of its health.
Ledian knocked off foe Infernape's Life Orb!

vs.

Ledian – 100%
Infernape – 99%

I can’t always be sure if Azelf will make a last attack to bring down Ledian or switch. Either way, Knock Off is the best option. It’ll get rid of the switch-in’s item and if Azelf doesn’t switch and Ledian survives the attack, Ledian can knock it out.

Infernape used Nasty Plot.
Infernape's special attack was sharply raised.
Ledian used Reflect.
A barrier was formed!

vs.

Ledian – 100%
Infernape – 99%

I expected a Fire move here and I wanted to save Gastrodon for a bit later. Reflect is a last resort move because I thought this Infernape was physical.

Infernape used Flamethrower.
It's super effective!
Ledian lost 100% of its health.
elephantdog's Ledian fainted.

vs.

Ledian – FAINT
Infernape – 99%

Nasty Plot is extremely dangerous and I didn’t want to risk losing any of my other guys here so Ledian had to take the hit. I use Encore this turn so Infernape would keep using Nasty Plot which would be a good time to switch in Togekiss.

elephantdog switched in Gastrodon.
Pointed stones dug into Gastrodon.
Gastrodon lost 6% of its health.
bbqmudkipz switched in Breloom.
Gastrodon used Surf.
It's not very effective...
Breloom lost 29% of its health.
Breloom was badly poisoned!
Gastrodon's leftovers restored its health a little!
Gastrodon restored 6% of its health.

vs.

Gastrodon – 100%
Breloom – 71%

The opponent predicted well that I would use an attack that Breloom resists. These are the times that I wish I had Ice Beam on Gastrodon but Stockpile and Recover proved to be more useful. I switched out Gastrodon here because I couldn’t let him take a Seed Bomb. He’s usually a powerful asset.

elephantdog switched in Togekiss.
Pointed stones dug into Togekiss.
Togekiss lost 25% of its health.
Breloom used Spore.
Togekiss fell asleep!
Togekiss's leftovers restored its health a little!
Togekiss restored 6% of its health.
Breloom's Poison Heal restored health!
Breloom restored 12% of its health.

vs.

Togekiss – 81% (Sleeping)
Breloom – 83%

Spore…it’s what makes people hate Breloom. I don’t want to switch out Togekiss because no one else can fight Breloom. I don’t want to keep switching and have him slaughter my team and have me send in a sleeping Togekiss at the end. All I could do is hope Togekiss wake up soon.

bbqmudkipz switched in Vaporeon.
Togekiss is fast asleep!
Togekiss's reflect wore off!
Togekiss's leftovers restored its health a little!
Togekiss restored 6% of its health.

vs.

Togekiss – 87% (Sleeping)
Vaporeon – 100%

Nothing eventful here. Togekiss is on the early stages of its hibernation while Vaporeon is planning to be a typical, long-lasting Vaporeon.

Togekiss is fast asleep!
Vaporeon used Wish.
Vaporeon made a wish!
Togekiss's leftovers restored its health a little!
Togekiss restored 6% of its health.

vs.

Togekiss – 93% (Sleeping)
Vaporeon – 100%

As much as I love Vaporeon as a Pokemon, it’s quite annoying to face it in battle.

bbqmudkipz switched in Azelf.
Togekiss is fast asleep!
The wish came true!
Azelf restored 50% of its health.
Togekiss's leftovers restored its health a little!
Togekiss restored 6% of its health.

vs.

Togekiss – 99% (Sleeping)
Azelf – 51%

Yikes! Azelf healed…I’m definitely losing. The opponent no longer has any severely damaged Pokemon.

Azelf used Toxic.
But it failed!
Togekiss is fast asleep!
Togekiss's leftovers restored its health a little!
Togekiss restored 0% of its health.

vs.

Togekiss – 100% (Sleeping)
Azelf – 51%

That must’ve been a mistake. Even if Togekiss wakes up this turn, Azelf is still faster and wouldn’t be able to poison Togekiss…unless that Azelf has no attacks.

Azelf used Stealth Rock.
But it failed!
Togekiss woke up!
Togekiss used Air Slash.
Togekiss's attack missed!

vs.

Togekiss – 100%
Azelf – 51%

Togekiss slept for 5 turns so that was plenty of time for the opponent to set up but he/she didn’t use the time wisely. I’m guessing that Azelf has no attacks which is why it used Stealth Rock again. This round was a stalemate because none of us did anything.

bbqmudkipz switched in Vaporeon.
Togekiss used Air Slash.
Vaporeon lost 26% of its health.
Vaporeon's leftovers restored its health a little!
Vaporeon restored 6% of its health.

vs.

Togekiss – 100%
Vaporeon – 80%

Air Slash could’ve taken out Azelf if poor-offense Ledian can OHKO it. Air Slash, however, does puny damage to Vaporeon so if I want to fight it, I have to use Nasty Plot. Togekiss is bulky enough to take any hits Vaporeon would sent at it.

Vaporeon used Protect.
Vaporeon protected itself!
Togekiss used Nasty Plot.
Togekiss's special attack was sharply raised.
Vaporeon's leftovers restored its health a little!
Vaporeon restored 6% of its health.

vs.

Togekiss – 100%
Vaporeon – 86%

I used this round wisely. I can use Nasty Plot again, which would help Togekiss sweep the rest of the team much easier.

Togekiss used Nasty Plot.
Togekiss's special attack was sharply raised.
Vaporeon used Roar.

Bleh…I did not expect Roar. This is going to be frustrating…Hopefully my Jolteon can paralyze it with Discharge.

Azelf restored 50% of its health.

vs.

Jolteon – 63% (Behind a Substitute)

This is not going well for me. All of the opponent’s Pokemon are at full health and my team is not shipshape.

Azelf used Psychic.
The substitute took damage for Jolteon!
Jolteon's substitute faded!
Jolteon used Shadow Ball.
It's super effective!
Azelf lost 100% of its health.
bbqmudkipz's Azelf fainted.
Jolteon lost 10% of its health.

vs.

Jolteon – 53%
Azelf – FAINT

This makes me wonder why Azelf didn’t attack before…anyways…I got to take out one Pokemon so yay for me! =D

bbqmudkipz switched in Breloom.
Jolteon used Hidden Power.
It's super effective!
Breloom lost 84% of its health.
bbqmudkipz's Breloom fainted.
Jolteon lost 10% of its health.

vs.

Jolteon – 43%
Breloom – FAINT

The opponent probably didn’t expect me to carry a move to fight Breloom. That Hidden Power is Ice-type. It helps with the Dragons.

bbqmudkipz switched in Infernape.
Jolteon used Discharge.
Infernape lost 89% of its health.
Jolteon lost 10% of its health.
Infernape used Close Combat.
Jolteon lost 33% of its health.
elephantdog's Jolteon fainted.
Infernape's defence was lowered.
Infernape's special defence was lowered.

vs.

Jolteon – FAINT
Infernape – 10%

Discharge is an almost crucial move this turn…almost. It’s hardest hitting move against Infernape and it can also paralyze the speedy monkey for the rest of my team. I knew Jolteon would be knocked out so I was hoping Discharge would paralyze since the rest of my team is slower than Infernape (excluding ChoiceScarf Girafarig).

elephantdog switched in Gastrodon.

vs.

Girafarig – 88%
Vaporeon – 100%

Infernape was injured and Vaporeon used Wish so I expected Vaporeon to switch which is why I used Surf. Earth Power could’ve worked too but I was a bit slow during the match.

bbqmudkipz switched in Forretress.
Girafarig used Zen Headbutt.
It's not very effective...
Forretress lost 9% of its health.

vs.

Girafarig – 88%
Forretress – 91%

Still expecting Infernape, I used Zen Headbutt. It also has a chance to flinch Vaporeon if it doesn’t switch.

elephantdog switched in Togekiss.

Spikes were scattered around the foe's team!
Togekiss's leftovers restored its health a little!
Togekiss restored 6% of its health.

vs.

Togekiss – 81%
Forretress – 91%

Switching to Togekiss is pretty safe because the worst Forretress could do is use Explosion and I doubt the opponent would sacrifice Forretress for an NU Pokemon. Besides Explosion, the most Forretress could do to Togekiss is Gyro Ball so it’s almost safe to set up Nasty Plot again, which would be good against that Vaporeon. Togekiss can handle a Gyro Ball.

Togekiss used Nasty Plot.
Togekiss's special attack was sharply raised.
Forretress used Spikes.
Spikes were scattered around the foe's team!
Togekiss's leftovers restored its health a little!
Togekiss restored 6% of its health.

vs.

Togekiss – 87%
Forretress – 91%

Spikes…That will definitely hurt my team coming in. Good thing I don’t have a Pokemon that relies on Focus Sash.

Togekiss used Heat Wave.
It's super effective!
Forretress lost 91% of its health.
bbqmudkipz's Forretress fainted.
Togekiss's leftovers restored its health a little!
Togekiss restored 6% of its health.

vs.

Togekiss – 93%
Forretress – FAINT

The opponent probably didn’t expect a Fire move from Togekiss since most of them carry Roost instead. I felt HeatWave (or Flamethrower) was necessary because it helps give Togekiss excellent coverage. There is no Pokemon that resists all 3 moves (the last is Aura Sphere) unless GameFreak creates a Ghost-Rock Pokemon in the future.

bbqmudkipz switched in Dragonite.

All I can do now is hope that Dragonite’s next attack misses. Togekiss’s stat boost is a bit of a waste if I switch. Even if Dragonite doesn’t miss, it will still get knocked out by its Life Orb.

The lesson of this battle is not to mess around too much. It could really cost you your victory. Even though I had half my team at the end of the match, Girafarig didn’t really count since it would faint upon entry and Mamoswine and Gastrodon were not strong enough to take on Vaporeon’s Wish support.

*This warstory was made quite a long time ago. I never had the time to put it up.

How did his Azelf outrun your Jolteon? O.o Jolteon should run Timid 252 speed, no?
Also, why did you use Ice Shard against the Vaporeon? Your Mamoswine outsped it and Ice Shard wouldn't have done 12% =/

How did his Azelf outrun your Jolteon? O.o Jolteon should run Timid 252 speed, no?
Also, why did you use Ice Shard against the Vaporeon? Your Mamoswine outsped it and Ice Shard wouldn't have done 12% =/
My shoddy team is the same team as my WiFi team. Jolteon couldn't outrun Azelf because it doesn't have maxed Speed IVs. I try to keep it as realistic as possible to know what to expect when going against the many AR-ers on WiFi. It's also why I have Heat Wave on Togekiss instead of Flamethrower. About the Ice Shard thing, I lost track of what Pokemon my opponent still had so I assumed that Azelf was still around so Earthquake felt too risky for me. Mamoswine doesn't really have a Salac Berry. It has a Custap Berry but that one isn't available on shoddy. I avoid shoddy sets because I feel that some Pokemon can do more than the posted sets. It's also more fun to fight someone unique. I swear that 95% of all Yanmegas (shoddy and WiFi) have the exact same sets.

I like to see games with good plays and good pokemon. I'll admit that some UU's are decent pokemon, but I am having a hard time believing that anything can't do a better job than Ledian as a Encore/Reflect lead or Girafarig as a scarfer.

That being said, if you are going to use pokemon like that, at least give them realistic IV's and things. If Jolteon is being outsped by anything slower than Scarf Smeargle, or max speed Rock Polish Rhyperior, that's just not good warstory material.

5/10

This match was from March. Reflect was a move I hardly used so I changed it for Fling. The only other Pokemon that can pull off its set are Alakazam and slower Pokemon. I chose Ledian because, from experience, Alakazam tempts people to use U-Turn which ruins the whole process. Girafarig is in there to get in surprise kills and it works well it. Not many people expect a physical Girafarig or even a Girafarig at all...and Jolteon. I give it realistic IVs because those are the real IVs. It takes an unbelievably long time to breed a Jolteon with HP Ice with a usable nature (Modest) so having perfect or close to perfect IVs is unrealistic. This Jolteon has 28 IVs in Speed and maxed SpAtt IVs so I can't ask for more. I highly doubt Rhyperior will ever outrun Jolteon and a Scarfed Smeargle will even outrun a Timid maxed Speed Jolteon.

You know...I could use the standard sets and replace those three with Metagross, Gliscor, and Swampert which would then make my team like nothing else out there. ;]

Wasn't that great of a read. There were some stupid moves, and it really wasn't a very good battle. Also, it's fine if you want to be unique, but using some of those random Pokemon (ledian) was eh.

5/10

Wasn't anything special, and it was boring to read with all those stallish turns, made it long :(

Also you didn't need to HP Ice his Breloom, using Shadow Ball would have killed, and if he had a dragon he would be more confident in bringing it out. Also TBOLT > Discharge on Jolteon, its simply kill or be killed with jolteon, only pokemon like bulky zapdos can run discharge effectively.

ALSO: don't use that green colour again, hurts :(

Not to be harsh, but I doubt your opponent's skill in places. Azelf is a suicide lead. Most players would SR then explode, he had toxic (he used that on a sleeping Togekiss he outspeedS why?) and tried to keep Azelf around with wish support. Most Azelf pack fire blast which would obliderate your Ledian. And he used SR when it was already up. He successful wasted a ton of turns of setup on a sleeping pokemon. Just saying. 6/10

I have to disagree with ost people here. Interesting battle. It reminded me to check for some pokemons. Ledian really got better since I last looked at it. xD

So yeah, some moves of you're opponent really were strange, but I liked to see the way some NU pokemon can tear down OU. It's always inspiring.

Also, I could lol at some responses in ths thread. xD
The best was claiming the superiority of Thunderbolt over Discharge.
Also, people never having realized that Girafarig is probably the best Gengar switch-in we have.

^ I don't see what's so funny about the responses in this thread; they're true. Thunderbolt is better than Discharge on Jolteon because Jolt just wants as much power as possible. It doesn't have the longevity to hope for a 30% paralyze chance.

It was an average battle with several misplays and questionable movesets and Pokemon. Also, your team doesn't seem very good, hoping for hax to kill Vaporeon (and even with a fair bit of hax against it it survived for a long time). Battles with hax generally don't make very good warstories.

So to summarise, next time you write a warstory use a battle with very little hax, against a good opponent with a good team and without misplays. I'm not trying to really bag out this warstory, I'm just giving you some advice about what makes a good warstory and how to improve for your next one. Good luck if you ever make another warstory!

While I have to agree that the warstory itself was somewhat unspectacular at parts, I did enjoy seeing an OU team with some interesting low tier choices (I love Ledian but have never found a good place for competitively...) Nice to see something different for once, keep it up

A bad battle between two subpar players, using crappy pokemon with bad movesets. Awful read. Better luck next time.

Yeah, then go and use Thunderbolt. Be happy! loool

I have to say the decision (thunderbolt/discharge) actually depends on your team (way more than onthe pokemon using it). For my team for example, discharge beats thunderbolt on every pokemon.

Why that? It's because how much you can make out of paralysis. If you play with stuff like Jolteon (it is just like you said kinda frail), you'll only switch it in in clear situation. I can't imagine you'd switch Jolteon in against a Salamence, taking the risk of being annihilated by almost anything this beast has for you. You mostly won't even come in on Gyarados, fearing EQ, if you don't have to take the risk. Jolteon switches in on clear situations most of the time (unlike Rotom for example, who comes in on fucking everything). This means after Gyarados has defeated something to do the cleanup, into stuff like like Rotom which cannot do ANYTHING to you.
But, I have to tell you: Clear situations are clear. Mostly, the opponent knows he's dead anyways and sacrifices (and if pokemon are so weak they get sacrificed, you do not need power to kill them) or he switches and you hit whatever comes next. And that's when Discharge kicks in: It helps getting an advantage. If my free shot goes to a ground (or volt absorber/motor driver) I'm fucked either way, but if my free shot goes to some sort of resist, I'd rather have a 30% chance of paralyzing than a 10% one. The difference in damage output is ridiculous on a blissey/snorlax/celebi/.... But having a paralyzed opponent allows me for a whole new range of possible switch-ins.

This only pays off if your team is built that way, obviously. If you're sweepers are fast or your jolteon tends to only hit immunities, then whatever. But once you have one or two of Snorlax/Tyranitar/Metagross/Machamp/..., a higher paralyze chance might pay off big time. Just consider it. It's not about what Jolteon can live through, it's about what the team has to live with...

And in the case of our OP, I really think Discharge pays off, because his pokemon are -- competitively speaking -- slow as fuck. One random paralyzed (which happens once every battle on average if you switch in Jolteon 3 times) may help that greatly.

Although I encourage creativity and the use of uncommon Pokemon, there didn't seem to be any strategy at work here. This was a rather terrible battle.

3/10

Just because there are NU Pokemon being used in an OU battle doesn't make the battle anymore interesting unless there is actual purpose or intelligence put into the use of those NU Pokemon.

not a good battle, both players and teams were below average at best and that is not saying enough, has much i enjoy unique teams, i hate to watch people using NU in OU just because they are NU or they THINK its unique, the fact ledian dindt had a focus sash was almost enough reason for me to stop reading.

here is a tip:dont use crap teams from wi-fi in shoddy, use good teams from shoddy on wi-fi.
