Dartrix Torracat Brionne

Introduction

Welcome to yet another Judge a Pokémon Express! This issue we'll be covering the newly released starter evolutions, Dartrix, Torracat, and Brionne. Let's welcome Codraroll, fx, pupper!!!, FellFromTheSky, heritage, Pikachu315111, GatoDelFuego, DHR-107, and {Pokemon_Vigilante}.

Dartrix

Codraroll

Codraroll

While Rowlet looks a little shy and insecure, Dartrix seems more arrogant and snobbish. It gives a solid impression of being a self-centered, upper-class bird, complete with a bow tie and extravagant hairdo. Even the pose says "Your concerns are below me", in a sort of 1950s-British-upperclass-boarding-school-boy kind of way. Dartrix is eloquently suited up, neatly groomed, looking good, and hyper aware of it.

Posture and attitude aside, the designers have done a good job with Dartrix's color scheme. White and brown are earthly colors, with green accents to reflect its Grass typing. The brown is a darker shade than Rowlet's, while the green is slightly richer. In comparison, Rowlet looks pale next to Dartrix.

Upon evolution, Rowlet's ball-round proportions change into something more resemblant of a real-life owl, with fairly realistic proportions with respect to height and width, head size, feet size, and torso. My only problem is with the wings. Actual owls fold their large wings when they are tucked in, but judging by its stock artwork, Dartrix's wings are more like large hands connected directly to its body. Not only that, but Dartrix's "shoulders" are very low on the torso, as if its dark brown "beard" hides a very long neck. The wings look OK when held against the torso, but folded out like in the stock artwork, it's a mess. Too short for flight, no visible joints, completely screwed-up attachment to the body. Apparently, Dartrix can even twist its wings, and the five large feathers look suspiciously like fingers. Please, don't let them have finger-like dexterity...

Overall, Dartrix gets good grades for posture, color scheme and proportions, but it fails hard on the wings.

Torracat

Codraroll

Codraroll

At first glance, Torracat might appear to be just a bigger Litten, but putting them side by side you can clearly tell that is not the case. Torracat creates similar impressions to Litten, that's true, but the differences are numerous when you start looking at the two more closely. Litten is clearly a house cat of sorts, whereas Torracat is larger and more feral, like a lynx or a cub lion. It is overall much more muscular, especially the front legs, and its face and posture are much more aggressive than Litten's. Litten is the sort of cat that sulks in the background of a scene, while Torracat jumps claw-first into the limelight. A feral feline to watch out for!

Color-wise, Torracat lets the fiery orange dominate over the charcoal black. Looking back to Litten again, its color is actually almost blue, whereas Torracat is a dark grey. Where Litten had a distinct black base with red markings, Torracat has two competing color schemes: red with black markings on the underside, black with red markings on the back. Its eyes are bordered by an even darker grey, creating a distinct outline and a nice contrast against the bright yellow. This, plus the comparatively larger pupils, gives Torracat more menacing eyes than Litten's. The face has a fourth color too, an ashen grey snout and inner ears.

Overall, Torracat gives a great first impression, but the longer you look at it, the more strange things you might notice. Why is the red pattern on its face sticking up like a horn? And the... whisker fangs on its chin? That flame sac orb between its front legs serves as a nice eye catcher for the design, but its biological purpose is more questionable. And why are the front legs so different from the hind legs? They don't look nearly bulky enough to propel the muscular body forward.

Brionne

Codraroll

Codraroll

The former two starter evolutions have generally followed up on the premise and added more. Small owl becomes bigger owl, small cat becomes bigger cat, and now sea lion becomes... weirdly dressed sea lion?!? If anything, Popplio's costume evolves into something bigger, while the base creature stays largely the same. Brionne is longer and sleeker than Popplio, with proportionately longer and narrower front flippers and smaller tail flippers. Popplio's relatively modest ruff is now a full ballerina skirt, whereas its ears are longer and braided somehow. Brionne also appears to wear heavy make-up around the eyes and snout. I can't help but think of a little girl raiding her mother's make-up closet for the first time; Brionne simply appears a little overdecorated.

Unlike Dartrix, Brionne has a much lighter and softer color scheme than its pre-evolution. Sky blue and puffy white dominate the pallet, with the eyes being much darker—drawing your gaze in the same way as Dartrix's bowtie and Torracat's "cat bell". While the white has receded from its snout compared to Popplio's all-white, cone-like snout, Brionne's flippers and ears now have white tips, like foam on waves. I imagine the effect will look better in-game than it does in official artwork, since the color scheme is so light that it clashes with the black outline.

The other panelists have given their thoughts on Brionne's femininity, but I'll choose to abstain. Brionne is apparently designed like a Japanese pop idol, whose finer aspects and implications I know nothing about, so I form my opinions without taking that into consideration. I can't honestly say I like Brionne's design personally, but there is a clear joy to it, especially in the animation, that I can definitely get behind.

Dartrix

DHR-107

DHR-107

I'm very much on the fence about this design. They have certainly given Rowlet a good dose of character with the addition of the huge fringe and a slightly larger bow tie. Dartrix has also improved a lot on the owl aspect of the design, being taller and more slender than Rowlet. However, the snobbish attitude it gives off is somewhat of a turn-off. The quiff and the well-groomed bow tie show that Dartrix is ready for business whenever the battle starts. In this instance, a certain catchphrase of "Suit Up!" is almost required!

The main problem I have with the design is the "hand wings". Owls typically have long flowing wings to give themselves the ability to fly almost silently. Dartrix looks like its wings are more akin to those of a Burrowing Owl in terms of length, making it incredibly difficult for it to fly properly. It also places the shoulder joint in a very awkward place for anchoring it adequately. I do like the aspect of it being able to fling quills from its wings though. Being able to bend these to hit could hint at other new moves!

The colors are an excellent choice. The white, green, and brown of Dartix give it an earthy and rustic feel, something I think is important in a Grass-type, especially considering this one flies!

Torracat

DHR-107

DHR-107

Torracat appears to have a broken spine. As another one of the writers here said to me "It looks as if it was stepped on early in development. That might also explain its underdeveloped hind legs". It's squat pose is probably trying to echo a hunting cat, but instead it comes off all wrong. Its front legs look massively muscular compared to its rear legs, which are very reminiscent of Litten's. This leads its spine and back to be flat and bent at a very awkward angle in its stock artwork. The other aspects of its design all are logical changes compared to Litten. It makes me excited to see which way the final evolution will go. The large front claws could lean towards something powerful.

The flame sac is a good focal point and draws attention away from the problems with Torracat's back. It looks somewhat like a bell collar that a normal house cat may have, except decidedly more useful. Torracats organ even makes a bell sound when it attacks! Much like Dartrix, Torracat can sense what is going on around it using its mane as a sensory organ. I'm not quite sure how that works...

Brionne

DHR-107

DHR-107

I can see how they are growing this Pokémon from Popplio. I hope we end up with a graceful evolution. This is that awkward "teenage" phase where we don't really know which way the design will go. Brionne's large and cute eyes draw attention to its face, which kind of distracts you from what is going on with the dress on its body. The dress barely works in terms of the overall design, but it gives some nice flow when the design is animated. The white and blue contrast each other incredibly well and just add to the overall cuteness of the design, I especially like the highlights on the tail and flippers. Its much longer body and flippers are a good extension to Popplio's rather stunted appearance.

Brionne is said to dance to distract its foe before attacking with powerful and explosive bubbles. It puts all of its efforts into learning as many different dances and perfecting them as much as possible. Hopefully we get an in-game event where we see Brionne dancing together on a moonlit evening.

Dartrix

FellFromtheSky

FellFromtheSky

It seems to me that Dartrix simultaneously faces both an issue similar to Torracat's—that is, being too similar to its pre-evolution—and one of being too different. To shed light this incredibly vague and contradictory statement, what I mean to say is that it's similar to Rowlet in ways that I would have liked to see Dartrix be different, while the changes that we did get were, in my opinion, not the best design-wise. For instance, Dartrix's feet shape and leaf bow tie are incredibly similar to Rowlet's, which, while not necessarily a bad thing, might have been good design elements to alter or build upon. On the other hand, the changes Dartrix did undergo, like it's odd fringe / bang-thing and perpetually closed eyes, only detract from the charm the design does have. At any rate, we'll see if this form is indeed just some awkward step on Rowlet's way to greatness.

Torracat

FellFromtheSky

FellFromtheSKy

Torracat's design, while nice, admittedly doesn't really improve upon that of its pre-evolution. The bell-shaped flame sac may be a nice touch; but putting that aside, Torracat is, essentially, just a beefier Litten. Its lovely color scheme underwent no changes, and its eyes are the same charming shape—which is exactly the issue. Torracat feels unoriginal and boring, while the changes that it did undergo are either not noticeable enough or simply poor design choices. In fact, the only other notable alteration it acquires in its evolution from Litten are its front paws, which are now larger and more claw-like. A design element that, in my opinion, makes Torracat appear awkward and imbalanced, especially considering Litten's dainty paws were one of its more endearing features.

Brionne

FellFromtheSky

FellFromtheSky

Perhaps it's just me, but I've never been bothered by Pokémon that have both male and female forms yet always appear "feminine"—I've never had an issue with male Gardevoir, and I played through Pokémon X with a male Braixen. Yet many seem to disagree with me; after all, I've seen, time after time, people who refuse to use a male Gardevoir, for instance. However, in my experience, this has more to do with gender stereotyping and unfortunate associations of weakness with femininity than anything else. As a result, I actually approve of the fact that Brionne's designers decided to challenge traditional gender stereotypes by giving a species of Pokémon that likely has a 1:7 gender ratio (female-to-male) a design that is easily perceived as "feminine."

With regard to the actual design and not just the ethos behind it, Brionne is actually, in my opinion, the most well-designed of the three recently revealed starter evolutions. The darling seal keeps its pre-evolution's lovely deep blue and pink color scheme but trades its awkward neck ruff for a charming frilly dress whose pale colors suggest it's made of bubbles. It doesn't stop there, however, as Brionne's expressive eyes and smile communicate its cheerful demeanor effectively. In addition, its in-game model is consistent in portraying this Pokémon's upbeat personality, and the variety of adorable poses it strikes are simply endearing. All in all, it's safe to say that Brionne is my personal favorite of these three most recently revealed Pokémon.

Dartrix

I'm actually quite surprised by Dartrix. Initially I thought they'd go for a more warrior type design, but nah, they went for the quirky look of an adolescent teenager trying to get through life. Though I will say that Dartrix's little hair flip-flap thing reminds me of Suyin Beifong's emo yet weirdly artistic son from Legend of Korra. Oddly enough, I can't say the same about the name Dartrix. It's a cool name, but it just sounds way too unfitting for a middle evolution, especially one that looks like this. But you know it's quite alright. At least it's not Torracat.

Torracat

fx

fx

OH MY GOSH, REALLY GAME FREAK? Torracat? Are you kidding me? Is that all you could come up with? Why is it that Torracat's peers have such creative, cool names, yet Torracat is stuck with... Torracat. Regrettable names aside, I'm having a lot of issues with this design. The first thing is that it hardly differs from Litten's; by this I mean that aside from a few feature enlargements and a slight change of palette markings, the only thing that differs from its pre-evolution is some bell thing. Despite my gawking, I can't help but enjoy the subtle hints of a tiger in the design. Plus, who could hate that smug look? "Not I," said the Torracat.

Brionne

fx

fx

I'm actually very satisfied with the fact that they decided to go with the more dance performer look rather than some silly circus seal one. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE a good ball-balancing blue baby seal, but the trope is just so lacking for me. Why do people hate the feminine look? If anything, it's a breath of fresh air from past fighter-looking starters that have had masculine qualities. I ask these hypersensitive people to just look into Brionne's eyes. That is the look of a thousand destroyer of worlds confined into a disguise of bubbly cuteness. I see you, Brionne. I SEE YOU.

Dartrix

GatoDelFuego

GatoDelFuego

Dartrix is a very interesting evolution from Rowlet. Rowlet was cute and cuddly, but Dartrix is trying to be a typical teenager and add a little more edge to the mix. I'm not really excited for the third evolution presumed to come, judging from the leaks seen already, but I do like Dartrix itself. Game Freak finally decided that we'd have an angsty teenager Pokémon, and I suppose they've succeeded. I first saw a gif of edgy Dartrix combing its hair the day after it was released, but I didn't realize that its teenager tendencies are actually baked into the lore provided. Dartrix's appearance has evolved nicely as well. I especially like the more pointed beak and hair swish. My big complaint with these Pokémon is that they're not really showing off anything... Grass-like at all. No doubt this will be a successful owl line, but as far as a good starter evolution? I don't really know.

Torracat

GatoDelFuego

GatoDelFuego

Yeah, I'm definitely biased at this point, but I really love Torracat. There's not too much changed from the Litten design that I loved, with the addition of cute angry eyes and a bell. What kind of cat isn't made cuter by carrying around a bell? The legs and paws on Torracat look a lot more catlike in my head, and I really like the snaggletooth Torracat is sporting. Is the "Torra" in its name supposed to be Japanese for "tiger"? If so, I like the sound of that. Is Torracat's "extremely powerful cat punch" described in the lore supposed to be it becoming a Fighting-type? If so, I don't like the sound of that. Again I am... not excited for the final evolution if it's what we've seen already. Fire / Fighting isn't honestly a bad combination; I'd just like to have this evolutionary line stay quadruped rather than just beefing up for no reason.

Brionne

GatoDelFuego

GatoDelFuego

Wow, where Dartrix and Torracat impressed me by taking what I liked about their initial stages and accenting them, Brionne goes in a... different direction! I hate it! Breaking this down, the first thing that I cannot ignore is those eyes. The iris is comically massive, and as a result Brionne is immediately a little too kawaii for me. Its front legs seem to have been stretched with the Photoshop tool, giving them the appearance of fettuccine. Brionne's body is also lengthier than Popplio's, which makes it look like a talking blue hot dog. Finally, it has a dress and a pair of pigtails. There have been human-like Pokémon in the past, no doubt. Gardevoir is graceful and elegant; even fellow Water-type Milotic can be described as "feminine" or "graceful" or "beautiful". Brionne just makes me think of a puppy some six-year-old is playing dress-up with. Something about it just creeps me out! I wasn't a big fan of Popplio's leaked final evolution, but I am a-ok with it now that I've seen the horror that is Brionne.

Dartrix

Pikachu315111

Pikachu315111

People often associate the evolution stages with growing up, especially with the three-stage lines. And it has often been presented as such, specifically when it comes to showing the stages of maturing; however, not so much when it comes to "phases". Dartrix looks like a proper next stage for Rowlet: it's bigger, its lighter colors have darkened, and it adds new elements to the design such as a pattern on its wings and grass hair. Said grass hair resembling a hair bang going over one of its eyes, popularly known as the "emo bang". We'll get into that, but keeping to its design, the characteristics you'd imagine with the hair cut gets kind of undermined, since, by default, Dartrix has its eyes closed most of the time This gives the image of wisdom, especially when combined with it being an owl. How does Game Freak combine both aspects together?

By making it self conceited! Dartrix thinks so highly of itself that it goes into extravagant behavior if it messes up or someone dares to touch its hair or feathers. As a bonus, this has been shown in-game with Pokémon Refresh, where touching its hair gives it a hilarious (negative) reaction. But its description working with its design doesn't end there; you'll notice it has grown orange feathers under its wings. Those feathers are more than an emerging body pattern, they're sharp like a blade, and Dartrix throws them with precise aiming, giving it the category "Blade Quill". With Rowlet using sharp leaves to attack, it looks like Gen VII's Grass starter's final evolution is aiming to be a sharpshooter.

Torracat

Pikachu315111

Pikachu315111

Torracat looks like a Litten on steroids, but it doesn't really do anything new with the concept. Torracat is more of a rearranging of what made up Litten's basic design to make a more complicated and a bit cartoony design. I have no problem with its body colors being split with black on top, red on the bottom, and stripes being added to the tail (calling back to the original design of the legs), but everything else I feel they decided to exaggerate. The symbol on Litten's head? Now it's longer, and there's one on its back. It's a cat, so its power source is now a fiery cat bell. It's meaner and stronger, so its front legs are bulky and have its claws out, though they leave the back legs alone making them look a bit awkward, as if they're trying to make the front and back legs different from one another.

There's a theme going on with the description of the starter's middle evolution stage: trust. Each one has the trust of its Trainer and they interact differently depending on the starter, which is a nice idea, exploring how different Pokémon view the idea of trusting their Trainer. This also links them to Rockruff's evolutions, there being some secret the starters and it share. Why do I bring this up here? It's really the only interesting tibit on Torracat, as it actually takes advantage of its Trainer's trust, acting spoiled (you know, like a real cat). Not sure what Gen VII's Fire starter is shaping up to be, it sounds quite like a heel with it liking to fight and doing strong "cat punches"... please don't be Fire / Fighting.

Brionne

Pikachu315111

Pikachu315111

When it comes to gender and design with Pokémon, things can get odd. This especially goes for the starters, whose gender ratio is leaned toward them being male. A masculine design has a higher chance of getting away with being used because of this, but a feminine design? Brionne is riding on the cuffs of Braixen, but while Braixen was still vague enough you could see it being a feminine looking male, Brionne isn't. Why? Because Brionne is wearing a dress, and it's not a natural part of its body. Admittedly the dress being made of bubbles is clever, but it also comes with another problem: its really the only thing different from Popplio about Brionne. Okay, its ears change, the tips of its flippers and mouth become white, and its snout becomes less white, but if you told me that they were making more distinct gender differences and this was a female Popplio, I would believe it, since the subtle changes don't change enough that I can call it the next stage of Popplio's evolution. It's only the dress that really makes it different from Popplio.

Popplio was a circus seal, so where to go from there? Well, turns out we should have been looking outside of the box; instead of looking for something related, we should have taken a step back and thought about what a clown was: an entertainer. Brionne drops the ball bouncing and becomes a dancer, though it still uses the bubbles to add some dazzle to its performances (and as a projectile). I'll give this to Brionne; unlike Froakie, which drops its foam gimmick when it evolves, it keeps the bubble gimmick, which contributes to its design. Clown, dancer, what will Gen VII's Water starter's final evolution be? Maybe something to do with singing to go along with its rising pop stardom (its category is "Pop Star").

Dartrix

pupper!!!

pupper!!!

In my opinion, Dartrix looks pretty good, aside from one, obvious, obnoxious, misfitting feature. Dartrix, for the most part, builds upon Rowlet's features efficiently and with good taste. I especially admire the choice of the designers to put tiny, sharper feathers on the insides of its wings, almost like darts or knives in a sheathe. However, its clean design and solid construction are marred by its asymmetry—all thanks to the limp, floppy, and greasy ducktail it sports. While I agree that the tuft lends Dartrix personality, I personally associate this kind of hair with shady types, not the refined or elegant. Perhaps some kind of curl or poof would have worked better towards this end. Bleh, whatever—the rest of Dartrix's design is well done and links admirably to Rowlet's, and aside from my gripes with the hair I enjoy this guy a lot.

Torracat

pupper!!!

pupper!!!

Utterly hideous. A clumsy, 'roided-up version of Litten that looks just like Litten yet lacks any real vibe of power or any of the former's quirky charms, Torracat made me laugh out loud when I first saw it in the trailers. Just look at those oversized forelimbs and stubby hind legs, set so low on the poor feline's grotesque legume-esque frame they are placed like the axles on a car. Observe how the sleek, delicate whiskers of Litten have been replaced by bulky, obnoxious, jutting cones of fur that turn Torracat's face into a big, blocky upside-down T. Look at the weird feathery stripes slapped onto its forehead, ending in a floppy plume even more unsightly than Dartrix's hairdo. See how lazily and slapped on the bell (oh, sorry, did I say bell? It's clearly an "organ") collar is, with nothing like it anywhere else on the design to balance it out. I can't see myself ever getting used to this design. Say what you want about how cool tigers are and the like, this design is just hideous in my opinion.

Brionne

pupper!!!

pupper!!!

Brionne's design is a breath of fresh air in that it shows a Popplio that has become more feminine rather than masculine, a first for the series (despite what some people may say, I regard Serperior and Servine as androgynous at best). While the use of Popplio's collar motif in Brionne's new "skirt" is clever, I do worry that it splits the body in a way that is more than a little bit awkward. Likewise, the move from simple dog ears to strings of bubbles is intriguing but a little weird at first glance, although both this and the aforementioned skirt grew on me as time passed. The tail, in my opinion, was done sort of lazily, with a new, sharper shape that isn't as clearly bifurcated as the original (supposedly to link Brionne into the rumored mermaid-esque final evolution) and a splotch of white that in my opinion just doesn't work very well with the round, separated forms of the rest of the design. My favorite thing about Brionne is the eyes; the splash of pink complements its nose, brings the face together as a whole, and just in general looks unique and pretty as hell.

Dartrix

heritage

heritage

Dartrix is absolutely adorable in every single way. Admittedly, I was a bit miffed about how well Rowlet's evolution line was turning out, as I was bitter at Litten's for being so bad, but this owl has grown on me so much in just the span of a few days. My favorite thing about it has to be the range of emotions that it has; it has a ridiculous amount of character. In the Pokémon Refresh function, it goes over the top with hilarious and adorable animations, such as its eyes going HUGE when you poke it too much or turning away and giggling, it's so cute! I'm glad that there are many more colors than just the boring tan, and I'm also glad that the beak doesn't look super awkward anymore. The wings also have a lot more detail, however small the details are. Overall, a fantastic start to the middle evolutions, and the Rowlet evolution line will probably end up being my favorite of the Grass-type starters.

Torracat

heritage

heritage

I like Torracat more than Litten overall, but the main issue I have with it is that I don't really think it solves many of Litten's actual problems. I said last time that I felt Litten was too "busy", and Torracat honestly makes that worse. I can appreciate the creativity behind the colors, but I'm really not a huge fan of orange-on-black, and now there's more of that to go around. However, the orange seems a bit... lighter. It's not quite as eye burning as before, which is definitely something I can appreciate. If I can compliment Torracat on anything, it would be its "collar" of sorts. I find the flamesac really interesting, and it's cool to watch it flare up during an attack. Its eyes are certainly better than Litten's as well. Just the overall shape of the body and facial features are more sturdy and muscular than those of Litten. Sadly, this is probably the last of the evolution line that I'll end up liking. The rumored last evolution looks like a Fire / Fighting-type, and I just.... despise it. If I ever end up choosing Litten (which is unlikely), I won't evolve it past Torracat. Ever.

Brionne

heritage

heritage

Brionne is super, super close to being a cute Water-type. I love the body style, and its in-game animations and overall attitude are completely hilarious and cute. It's just... those eyes, how did nobody notice them? While the rest of the features display an elegant and playful sea lion, the eyes can be described no better than "O_O". They don't even look like they belong on the same Pokémon. It's supposed to pull your attention to the adorable little smile plastered on its face, but the designers seem like they didn't take into account how hideous they are. Other than that, everything checks the box at least. Brionne is super frilly and looks like it can break out into song and dance at random. I wouldn't say it's the best possible evolution for Popplio, but the rumored final-stage evolution blew me away so much that I can look over the "awkward middle school" days.

Dartrix

{Pokemon_Vigilante}

{Pokemon_Vigilante}

I look at this Pokémon and wonder if this is how J.K. Rowling would have Harry Potter look if he were turned into an owl without glasses. All kidding aside, there truly isn't too much difference in appearance between the pre-evolved Rowlet and Dartrix. I have to say that I do, and have, always enjoyed the owl-like Pokémon, and this one is no exception. With the possibilities that come from being a Grass / Flying type, I'm sure there will be many moves that showcase the beauty of this owl. While I wish the color scheme had a little more depth to it with each evolution, I won't complain, since I like the insightful and intelligent look that I see with Dartrix. I just have to hope that it moves as smart as it looks.

Torracat

{Pokemon_Vigilante}

{Pokemon_Vigilante}

If there were a Fire-type cat that I would look for a way to ignore, it would be Torracat. Much like Rowlet and Dartrix, there is very little change in appearance between Litten and Torracat. The difference here is that Litten starts out looking like a rip-off of Litleo, only in a tiger's design. I'm not saying that tigers aren't great looking or predators, but this cat looks tame in both stages so far. There will be those who I am sure will argue Litten and Torracat are supposed to look like powerful tigers, but I only see a domestic house cat with painted-on stripes that someone thought would make it look fierce and strong. If the name Litten had been a combination of "liquid" and "kitten", then there might have be something to enjoy here, but the Fire-type cat bit is vastly overplayed in my book. Put it in a warm room and give it a ball of yarn, folks, because this cat is all purr and no roar.

Brionne

{Pokemon_Vigilante}

{Pokemon_Vigilante}

I thought that Popplio was a very adequately designed starter, and I had hoped that the further it evolved , the more majestic it would look. Sadly, I think we just found a sea lion reject from the circus of the strange and bizarre. I hoped for beauty and grace and got freaky and clownish. Here is a perfectly good case of the series we all know and love coming to a close (in my opinion), and instead of all the stops being pulled out, I feel like this generation of Pokémon was designed in a dark room with one flashlight, and the only person who couldn't use the flashlight decided to use their artwork, regardless of what anyone else said. That being said, I have to applaud the fact that there were more dramatic changes made between Popplio and Brionne than there were between Rowlet and Dartrix, as well as between Litten and Torracat. As of this moment, I am actually hoping that, when my little four-year-old daughter plays this game in a few short weeks, she'll avoid Popplio and Brionne altogether. If not, I'll have to pray that she'll enjoy the game just as much as I did my first time and want to get through it on her own, because I'll be hesitant to help her if I have to stare at this atrocity and its evolutions for any length of time.
