Cycle 43: Ogerpon-Cornerstone

Ogerpon-C is a overlooked but strong breaker with its signature Ivy Cudgel being the only 100% accurate Rock-type move with other tools like Swords Dance, Power Whip, Encore, Superpower, and the list goes on. Let's see what you can do with this masked creature and hopefully build the best team with it as well!

Red Robin’s Menu - Ogerpon-C + Choice Specs Tapu Lele balance

Ok so I had hit up Illouri and asked them if we could build a teamcomp team together and this is what we came up with. Ogerpon-C is most definitely an underrated offensive presence, shredding through things like Zapdos and Tornt as well as Sun teams carrying Pokemon like Gouging Fire much easier than Waterpon can. Not only that, it’s a decent failsafe into more offensive teams thanks to sturdy, being able to ko Pokémon that are boosted like Dragonite lacking Dual Wingbeat or Volcarona. It also breaks bulkier cores with the same power broken waterpon has. Choice specs Tapu lele is a good partner because it helps Cornerstone overload its checks like Lando and defensive chomp while also providing psychic terrain to defend against priority moves from the likes of Mmedi, Msciz, and Mmaw. In return Cornerstone helps lure in pretty much every steel with superpower, being able to smack lele’s checks like heatran and Ferro as well as beat any cores consisting of Mtar and Gking. Toxapex is an excellent defensive piece that works well at check threats that could revenge kill rockpon like Weav, Zama, and Ival. Zama is especially important because it would otherwise blow this team apart. Tera Fairy is used because it helps provide a dark resistance, helping it check Darkrai and Weavile much better, while also gaining an immunity to dragon moves from mons like Bolt, gouging, and chomp. Scarf Lando is the chosen Speed control, compressing multiple slots at once; being a scarfer able to outspeed and ko threats like Tornt and Koko is huge for the rockpon agenda while also being a ground immune able to generate momentum for the team and defog off hazards made it a good choice. Dnite is the main waterpon check, having roost to deal with it much more consistently while having a good offensive combo of ice and ground coverage to hit the majority of the tier. Ice spinner is also quite nice for hitting Glisc and Lando too. Heatran is a good defensive presence in general, as having another fire and fairy resist is always nice. It mainly checks lele, which otherwise is a huge issue. Toxic is used to for bolt to make it just a bit easier to play around, but taunt is also another good option to use as well. It also provides hazard support so then rockpon breaks easier while also providing additional support into Ferrothorn (so then rockpon doesn’t lose sturdy trying to hit it with spower).

:alomomola: keeps heatran and lando alive, also safely brings in pon and heatran

:landorus-therian: scarf for some speed control, hits decently hard while being able to fast pivot into alo or pick off weakened teams with eq

:latias-mega: secondary wincon, really bulky and hits pretty damn hard after a cm. also good switchin to ogerpon-w and yard

I did in fact take part in building this team. Ironically this is the second time we collaborated for a team comp, and both times were for an Ogerpon form.

Cycle 44: Latios-Mega

Mega Latios has been a slowly rising offensive Pokemon in National Dex, boasting incredible strength with its STAB Luster Purge and Draco Meteor, along with variable coverage such as Aura Sphere, Mystical Fire, or even Ice Beam. Its' incredible defensive profile helping against Mega Charizard Y and Urshifu-R is a good trait to have for such a strong Pokemon as well! Can you build the best team with the man of the Eon Duo?

:Latios-Mega:
Mega Latios is a very underrated mon in the current meta. It simultaneously offers great defensive and offensive utility to any team checking mons such as Urshifu, Gliscor, Ogerpon, Heatran etc. Luster purge + Psychic noise offers great breaking power with spdf drops and healblocking as well as being a nuisance to mons like Gliscor.
:Amoonguss:
Another underrated mon Amoongus acts as a great defensive pivot as well as offering nice utility in spore. A lot of teams cant handle switching into it and essentially gives you a free mon. Amoongus is the main way of preventing physical threats from running over the team.
:Heatran:
Heatran is a great specially defensive mon as well as rock setter. It has good synergy with Amoongus as it deals with annoying fire and psychic types while Amoongus covers water and fighting threats.
:Zamazenta: Not much has to be said here Zama is one of the best mons in the tier adds a nice dark resist for darkrai and helps check offensive threats while being a good late game wincon.
:Landorus-Therian:
Scarf Lando is the glue of the team adding the needed electric immunity and more consistent ground immunity. It serves as a nice revenge killer and defogger for the team.
:Darkrai:
Darkrai is an excellent wallbreaker and nice speed control. It appreciates free switches provided by amoongus forcing a spore absorber like Gliscor as well as when you land the spore you get some extra damage through your ability.

I’ve posted this team already in the team bazzar so I’ll just repeat the description from there:
“One of my favorite balances to use when I don’t know what to load. It went through a lot of variations but this is what I settled on. Gliscor, pex, heatran, and zama are self explanatory and have already had their roles mentioned in the past teams. Prough pon is cool for the Latis and bolt, opening up more opportunities for Zama and Mtios to get in and do stuff. Taunt Tran traps gking mainly but also traps pex a bit more efficiently so then mtios and zama are freed up mid / late game. Mtios is a good breaker here and acts as the pon and mmedi check while also helping break through Garg and Zapdos.”

I also changed the paste from tox Glisc to u turn Glisc, basically helps you pivot in Mtios safely while also bringing in things that threaten certain rockers (like heatran / zama for ferro, pon into Glisc, etc) so then Glisc can fog and keep up hazards easier while still giving this team some momentum.

So, I thought to myself what to do with Latios-Mega, so I just used the standard set that everyone else was using, so that I had a starting point. M-Lati has the perfect thing for bulky balance going where ir’s relatively fast, kinda bulky, and has a high defensive output in the form of Draco Meteor being Draco Meteor. So, I ditched the bulky part and just went full offense with this team.

So, right off the bat, I put Ferrothorn because of 2 reasons. The first one is I like using Ferrothorn, and 2, M-Lati kinda gets revenge killed by Scarf Lele, Darkrai, and Weavile, so, that kinda acts as a stopping point for them. Ferrothorn is just the perfect utility pokemon, as it can chip with leech seed, set rocks up, and can just be unkillable for some Pokémon. I went Gyro Ball over Power Whip just because even after adding Ferrothorn, I was still kinda weak to Scarf Lele, and this can deal with it relatively good enough. I went with Thunder Wave mostly to help with faster threats that might KO M-Lati before it can Nuke the heck out of stuff, and to help with other threats on this team for sweeping,

Next, I added Scarf Urshifu-Rapid, because I thought I needed some Immediate Power, and some Speed Control just in case I can’t get the T-Wave off. This forms as just a wall breaker that can deal with stuff like Landorus-T(with no rocky helmet), Ferrothorn, Heatran, and Darkrai and Weavile, which helps M-Lati get to breaking. It can also pivot into M-Lati safely for it to start absolutely decimating the opponent, into Ferrothorn to wall something or get rocks off, or into Volcarona to start sweeping.

Oh yeah, Volcarona. I just wanted to use a special sweeper, since most special walls like Heatran, Clod and the like, just kinda die to Urshifu or M-Lati, which gives Volcarona the perfect position to sweep. I went with the classic offensive set with Giga Drain because who loves just healing to full before you can revenge kill it, and I went with HP Ice because I hate all Gliscor, and Landorus-T kinda seems like a problem with Rocky Helmet.

I added Zapdos because Knock Off is getting kinda free on my team, and now Knocking Off can now insue some Static paralyzed shenanigans. I forwent Hear Wave for HP Ice because again, I hate all Gliscor, and my team dealt well with the other steels well enough. Also, I went Defog because of Knock Off removing Heavy-Duty-Boots on my team can spell danger for a lot of Pokémon, mainly Volcarona, and I can set up Weavile in case I wanted to get a sweep on the physical side.

I‘ve always been a Weavile Believer, and I thought, hey, I need Knock Off, and Priority Ice shard ain’t too bad. I still needed a Z move tho, because I think any Competitive non-stall team needs a Z-Move User, so I used Darkinium Z because who dosen’t wanna see a unexpecting Gouging Fire die horribly in a black hole. Anyway, this is kinda like Volcarona, in which it capitalizes on the holes that M-Lati and Urshifu kinda make in the opposing team to just finish up the job, and the Z move is kinda just the scrape to get the big pieces of gum off the table.

Forest Mega Latios Offense

I built this quite long ago after Dahness (I believe?) told me to use the SOAD song Forest for a RMT. I never got around to RMT'ing this team, but it performed pretty decently in a few tests. It was build around Flip Turn Mega Latios, which both threatens large swathes of the metagame with its phenomenal Special Attack and STAB combo while being able to bait in its only answers in Mega Tyranitar and Ting-Lu with Flip Turn for Iron Valiant to go to town.

:latios-mega:
Mega Latios serves as both a powerful wallbreaker and pivot. It has absolutely nuclear STAB options in Luster Purge and Draco Meteor backed by a monstrous base 160 Special Attack to shred everything that isn't Ting-Lu, Mega Tyranitar, AV Glowking, or a Steel-type to shreds. Enter Flip Turn. Flip Turn allows it to take advantage of all its checks listed above and turns Mega Latios from a one-dimensional piece to a choice whose sheer threat level forces momentum on a team that greatly appreciates it.

:iron valiant:
SD + LO Iron Valiant isn't a new concept, and this team utilizes it well. Ice Punch smacks Landorus-T and Gliscor, while the rest of the set is standard. It pairs up well with Mega Latios since it takes advantage of the aforementioned checks to set up a Swords Dance and break defensive cores.

:ferrothorn:
Most of Mega Latios's checks are also pressured by Spikes, meaning Ferrothorn slots well onto this team as a Fairy resistance, Spiker, and overall blanket switch-in to a lot of things. Pretty standard set as well, with Knock Off letting Ferrothorn remove HDB and actually be an important asset in the Stall matchup.

:great tusk:
Defensive Tusk is a defensive answer to the aforementioned threats if Iron Valiant can't switch in for whatever reason, and it also removes hazards while being a mon that you can throw out in front of a lot of physical attackers and function as a stopgap.

:rotom-wash:
Rotom-W functions here as another Fire resistance, while also providing pivoting support as well as Will-o-Wisp for the team.

:darkrai:
Choice Scarf Darkrai is a very interesting pick here, being a good speed control option that can take out things like Iron Boulder and the like if things go south. It also helps immensely vs. hyper offense, as those teams usually don't carry a Dark Pulse switch-in and get ripped to shreds late-game with Darkrai + Spikes chip and pivoting support. It functions well vs. offensive teams but struggles into fatter ones, which is what the other members of the team are equipped to handle.

Rotom-W functions here as another Fire resistance, while also providing pivoting support as well as Will-o-Wisp for the team.

Choice Scarf Darkrai is a very interesting pick here, being a good speed control option that can take out things like Iron Boulder and the like if things go south. It also helps immensely vs. hyper offense, as those teams usually don't carry a Dark Pulse switch-in and get ripped to shreds late-game with Darkrai + Spikes chip and pivoting support. It functions well vs. offensive teams but struggles into fatter ones, which is what the other members of the team are equipped to handle.
