Smogon Simple Questions Thread

I had a few:

1. Is there any place on here dedicated to making friends with the intent of doing a soul link?

2. Is there anywhere on Orange Islands where we can simply shitpost about the games? I was gonna play through one I haven’t before and wanted to make lil posts talking about it.

3. On showdown, I’m interested in playing some battle types that aren’t commonly available: Gen 3 UU, Gen 3 Doubles, and Gen 5 doubles. I was wondering what the best way to find people to play would be.

Gen 5 OU has been regarded pretty highly from what I have known and is a prestigious tier that feels differently treated than other gens... I know this might sound a bit objective but why is it so special to the players compared to the other gens?

also, is there a code for the tera symbol? just finished a suspect and I wanna slap it on.

Can't answer the first question, but there isn't a code for the tera symbols. However, the gems work well for that. : normal gem : ofc gets :normal gem: and so forth (even fairy gem :fairy gem:, which was never released)

Most of the relatively unpopular metagames have some sort of discord server listed somewhere in their respective threads/forums. Those are generally the best way to matchmake rather than just hanging around in queue waiting for someone else to play (which can easily take more than 10 minutes if you're playing a metagame that isn't OU.)

Hello, Im new to this site and im looking to play with a friend and have fun. Im familiar with Gen 1 and 2.
But I have issue with format, if im looking for Gen 2 without restrictions what format should I select?

So there isn't a regular format for a Anything Goes in Gen 2, but you can use this challenge code with your friend:

/challenge [user],gen2ubers@@@!Species Clause,!OHKO Clause,!Evasion Items Clause,!Evasion Moves Clause,!Sleep Clause Mod,!Freeze Clause Mod

This code has everything legal without any of the clauses or mods in regular OU or Ubers.

Depends on whom exactly you are referring to that holds BW OU in such high regard. In general, most top players and veteran Smogon members consider the BW tiering era as a resolute failure. Even today, BW is far from being a "solved" metagame, even compared to the generations that followed and especially in direct contrast to the preceding gens 1-3. This largely has to do with the fact that the tiering of BW has continued into the past decade following the introduction of gen 6+.

Now, this isn't to say that BW is unfun by any measure. In fact, many of the top players of the day still main BW OU in major tournaments like SPL because they enjoy it so much. Some of this may have to do with nostalgia. Some probably has to do the the immense disparity between team archetypes (most call the "weather war") and the pace of play is much faster than other gens, save for DPP.

A lot of players probably place a lot of personal importance on BW because that was what I consider the "Gilded Age" of Smogon. The BW era saw the emergence of many of the best players ever to play the game, the tournaments like SPL were well-established and many of the earlier implementation kinks had been worked out by then, the community felt expressive and vibrant, and BW as a gen was just fun to play (the BW lower tiers are also highly regarded among many).

Overall I wouldn't say that BW is held as particularly more prestigious than any other gen, but there's lots of reasons why people may place special attention to it.

Hi, thanks for your advice. I also noticed there is a Gen 2 Custom game, just available in challenge... wouldnt be the same?

Update: I was watching a Gen 2 Custom Game battle and a pokemon had an ability, may be a bug?

Custom Game doesn't have any legality checks in any way, so it's up to the users to make sure that everything is legal or even possible in the games themselves. The above challenge code is probably easier for validation purposes.

Wow, that makes sense...hope devs give some love to the best gen of all

Im pretty sure there is a good reason complex bans don't exist in modern gens, but what exactly is the reason? When did we stop doing them, and why do past gens still have them, even though modern tiering actions on old gens no longer complex bans?

Rip :terapagos-terastal: In OU

They're just messy. It's way easier to parse "these things are banned: this, this, and this" than it is to parse "these things are banned: this, this, that, this when paired with that, that but only when the moon is full..."

That said, in cases like Terapagos and Tatsugiri, I do think Smogon has gone too far in the other direction. Still preferable to the shitshows of Gen 5 and Baton Pass, though.

It also helps that there are very few situations in which complex bans are necessary. Most of the times, if a mon uses 1 or 2 moves to make the metagame nigh-unplayable, the issue is with the pokemon itself and not the move, and thus the pokemon is banned. In the case of something like shed tail, it was later shown that the move was the issue and not the pokemon (seeing as the relatively bad mon that orthworm was saw considerable use and was pissing everyone off) the move was banned and the pokemon was not. Neither banning pokemon or moves are complex bans (depends who you ask about that move thing ngl but i don't find it very complex)

Sure, some situations like Archaludon were very much the fault of the move. But since tools pertaining to archaludon specifically assisted in making Electro Shot broken, such as its absurd survivability when paired with assault vest and ability to blast away its checks after 1 or 2 boosts, Archaludon itself was deemed the issue and was thus banned.

The general ban order for how things are suspected are ban the pokemon first, if the move or ability is a consistent problem ban that second and consider unbanning the banned mons that previously had access to the move.

Assume I've been living under a rock and I have not been in the loop of what went down with the replay wipe.

They've revived a bunch of replays - but are there any updates on the other ones? Has anything been said publicly on if they intend to try and revive the others or if they are permanently done?

What would you consider low, medium, top ladder in terms of ELO?
For me, it depends on the ladder.

For example, OU Low ladder is probably from 1000-1350, mid ladder is like 1350-1600, and high ladder is anything past that.

But on a ladder like, say, ADV ZU, low ladder is 1000-1200, mid ladder is 1200-1300, and anything above that is high ladder.

Depends on the population of the ladder, more people generally means higher peaks and more ELO diversity. Also depends on how easy it is to win in the format, because in something like AG, it is really easy to get to 1600+ without dropping a single game.
