Metagame SV OU Metagame Discussion v4

So, anyway, how are you guys doing with or vs Palafin? Personally I'm 7-1 with him today (very mid ladder), with a team of my own creation, and it's looking very strong, with the Bulk Up-Taunt set with cloak. I'm running all the ops on my team and it definitely feels like the tier is saturated with too many strong pokemon.

For me it is very 50/50 but that is because I am bad :D

Idk kyurem is now easier to manage. It's hilarious when it uses Tera Fire or ground now

Not sure why some of you insist in this idea of dropping box legendaries in the same tier where people stay complaining that it’s filled with broken shit? I may understand giving a chance to things that were banned early on when there are more counters or checks for them but things like the Great Wall (Lugia), Solgaleo or Giratina that have big coverage moves and tera to escape their weaknesses.
Yeah I think Lugia is something that probably doesn't stay unless by some miracle tera gets banned

At least then it would have some clear shortcomings in an ou context

The Great Sitting Duck (doesn't even have toxic anymore) and Dies-to-Knock-off-EQ-and-Shadow-Ball would hardly be more oppressive than Palafin. As for Giratina, that would be broken and we aren't asking for it.
Ghost/Dragon is still a monstrous offensive typing, yeah if that thing calm minds you just just lose, Giratina would be more broken than the other ones for sure.

Lugia would be the biggest tera hog there is with competition only from Solgaleo if both were allowed in OU, and it can't do much with it besides calming up. If you toxic it it dies and it can't even take bodies in the meantime with its 90 base offenses.

For the set you listed, it's a suicide machine (chip damage switching in, hazard damage, Life Orb recoil) that doesn't look to hit hard enough to wallbreak and lacks a boosting move to sweep. Probably a fine cleaner, but there's so many other options to clean that don't require you to lose a turn somewhere that why bother?

Without seeing a few replays where it's putting in work, it just doesn't look like it'd be effective.
I agree, frankly I saw bulky life orb and stopped reading

Perhaps they don't agree with the viewpoint held by some users that the tier is "filled with broken shit." Users that express this viewpoint do not represent every player and just because someone is complaining that does not mean we need to agree with them. "People are saying" is a great way to obfuscate how many people are saying something as well as who these people are - the playerbase is not a monolith.

Personally, I think there is a cohort of similarly powered S tier pokemon in OU (we all know which), and another cohort of similarly underpowered bottom of the barrel Ubers RU. If Palafin, who is one of these UbRU, is not stronger or more problematic than the S tier OU mons, and the community has decided that these pokemon must remain in OU, then I think several Ubers suspect tests must cascade aftet that.

I agree with the stance that Lugia and Solgaleo would be balanced in OU (at least more than Palafin is), but Solgaleo certainly wouldn,t be a Tera hog despite being weak to Knock Off. Steel Psychic is not a bad typing, it allows to soft check check Valiant, Enamorus, Glowking, Clefable, etc. Its not 100% reliable but at least forces all those to not SPAM their STABs, since Solgaleo is bulky enough to take one STAB attack and then the effective coverage. The 4 weaknesses it does have, also are good to use Weakness Policy sets, with either Agility or Trick Room. I am more forward to see an OU Meta with Solgaleo than I am towards one with Palafin, but lets not make it look worse than it actually is, Solgaleo, while not broken would certainly be one of the best OU Pokemon should it fall (can,t say the same about Lugia for example).

Yeah I suppose you're right

i agree, actually. i'm firmly against dropping ubers, but if, through some supernatural event, palafin turns out to be balanced, my faith in that stance will be thoroughly shaken. in that very very unlikely case, i'd suggest tests on lugia, solgaleo, volcarona, and zama-c, in that order
y’know I really don’t think we should be listening to anyone who thinks or fearmongers that the tests should or will happen

Besides all the debates over the legitimacy to confer at a restricted group of people the possibility to choose a suspect, what I find hilarious is thinking that 1 week of ladder with a new mon (so an entirely new meta) is enough to let people get a proper opinion

We're talking about a community who first didn't ban Gouging Fire (30%, iirc ), and had to wait another couple of months to figure out that it was just stupidly broken

Same approach led us to unban such mon as Darkrai, and has directly contributed to make this meta shitty, sry but the council since the start of 2nd dlc has just been an immense joke, and has to improve at a certain point, or just stop being

Tier needs plenty of bans / major changes, and we're stuck here, losing time with a fucking suspect of Palafin

Let's be serious, please.

Hey all! Unrelated to the ongoing Palafin suspect in OU, but I'd like to announce that we're bringing back many of our forum projects over the winter break! We'd love to see these be an active part of the forums, and I'll give you all a summary of what's currently on the table for some of our new and returning projects, along with reaching out in case anyone would be interested in being a part of these behind the scenes!

SV OU Teambuilding Lab
Hosted by Tysonslayer

The Teambuilding Lab is back open for the holidays! This is a fun and unique project that takes user requests and passes them to a team of experienced teambuilders that not only build to those requests but provide full teams with written-up explanations of details such as the building process, how each set works, and how the team functions. As the project grows larger and more and more submissions come in however, it would always be great to have more builders on the team - if you'd be interested in giving this a try then please drop an application at https://forms.gle/wSQkarmnPM7UawxE8, it's a great way to not only contribute to the community but also work with experienced teambuilders and develop a better understanding of both the project and the tier. We'd be happy to have you on!

SV OU Teambuilding Competition
Hosted by leng loi and Mimikyu Stardust

I'm happy to announce that the Teambuilding Competition is also back! This week will be focusing on the rising star Pecharunt - a full description of the Pokemon and its common uses is provided in the thread, along with some examples of team structures that make use of it. I'd encourage anyone interested to give this project a try, submissions are open until this Wednesday. Think outside the box, come up with something interesting and try your best to claim a spot in the Hall of Fame!

Teams of the Week
Hosted by SetsuSetsuna

Teams of the Week is also back! Keep an eye on this for some of the hottest teams right now in the metagame, and as always, if you have any submissions for teams then shoot a message to Setsu through Smogon DMs, SetsuStsna on PS!, or SetsuStsna on Discord. Open to any suggestions regarding strong teams emblematic of the current meta for the Palafin test, feel free to share!

OU Puzzle Club
Hosted by TheDuckChris and batMAN

The OU Puzzle Club will be returning soon! This is another unique project that will be coming back soon to the tier, and we'd love to see it get some love when it does! Just stay tuned for it to return, it's a great for-fun thread featuring interesting puzzle games that challenge participants to find a clear path to victory, and it can be a chance to flex your competitive muscles and see whether you've got what it takes to win!

Lure That Threat
Hosted by veti and matte

Lure That Threat is another of our beloved long-running projects that will be looking to make a return in the near future! Keep your eye out for this to come back soon, I've been a long-time fan and previous participant in this project and it's a great way to not only cook up some cool lures to deal with common OU threats but also see what other ideas exist out there and come up with ways to patch up weaknesses in your own OU teams!

Tera Type Index
Hosted by SetsuSetsuna

With the advent of Tera Types now being shown in the OU usage stats, the Tera Type Index is now open for submissions! Each week a new Pokemon will be chosen, with users challenged to choose one of the types listed or come up with an all-new and viable Tera type to be submitted for adding to the index! Just write up an explanation and post a replay to highlight it in use, I'd love to see where submissions to this new resource take us!

I'm using this post to highlight our new and returning projects, but I'd also like to shout out our ongoing projects such as Victim of the Week hosted by batMAN and SV OU Good Cores hosted by alkazoth, give them a try if you haven't already! And if anyone here would be interested in project development, project hosting, or has any ideas that they'd like to share, then feel free to reach out to me or the rest of the team - we're always open to ideas and suggestions to make the forums an even better place!

Thank you all for being a part of this community and a massive thanks to everyone who has contributed over the past year, I'm glad that we have such an active and engaged playerbase and I'd love for that to continue into the new year and beyond. Happy holidays!

Y bingo, you just had the point

Metagame isn't something fix, solved in 2 weeks, it slowly evolves, and yet you don't see the issue in letting people the possibility to radically change the tier based on a 1-week ladder experience

Gouging was here for months and yet people don't realized its full potential (and saying he wasn't broken the 1st suspect when everyone was spamming lando/tusk rh to narrow it lmao), but ye in 1week they'll be able to judge a whole new meta and know if Palafin has to be unban or no lmao

"Darkrai not top 5 dark mon" you said, before banning sleep in sv lmaoooo

I'm not saying it's the 1st threat rn, but he's one of those mon, which took together, are just overwhelming the meta, and instead of banning them 1 by 1, you keep unbanning things cause that's funny

Keep enjoying your shitty meta

yet you don't see the issue in letting people the possibility to radically change the tier based on a 1-week ladder experience
First, retest is two weeks

Second, why is this specific to me or this tier? This applies to any suspect or retest. Week or two to determine if the tier is better with a new Pokemon or without an existing one. Maybe you have a gripe with the whole process? Maybe you have a gripe with the concept of retests? Not sure, but oversimplifying this to SV OU right now when this is how you articulate your issue is for sure not the optimal play.

I mean Gouging wasn’t broken during the first suspect test. It got less support than virtually any other suspect did this generation. People spamming checks or counters proves my point, not yours.
"Darkrai not top 5 dark mon" you said, before banning sleep in sv lmaoooo
It wasn’t. It was not a top 5 Pokemon with sleep — it was just a variance hive. It’s not even close to a top 5 Pokemon now either.
Keep enjoying your shitty meta
Gladly will, and I hope you find a way to as well.
