(Little) Things that annoy you in Pokémon

Counter-proposal: All Pokemon games should have voice acting but only in the language(s) spoken in the region depicting. No matter whether you're playing L:ZA in Japan, the US, or Nairobi, the characters speak French and that's it.
I agree that the old Pokemon games were simpler in terms of voice work, but with the way technology has developed, I'd love to see more options for dubbing and localization.

The point is, animating like they're fully speaking yet they're dead silent is awkward as shit. People have made other suggestions for bypassing language barrier (Sims-ing it), like it's not black white besides "GF, stop getting Creatures Inc to animate sequences that beg for vocals"
This. The debate isn't "1998 text only" vs "fully voiced movie-length cutscenes, dubbed for every region". It's "Silent movies from 1920 with people bobbing their heads while music plays and you read title cards" vs "LITERALLY ANY OTHER OPTION". Simlish would be my pick, but dialogue for major cutscenes only, only VAing a couple languages, or anything else that's been brought up would be fine.

The nightmare, of course, is that the first time we get voice acting in a Pokemon game it's AI-generated.

I will say, while normally I'm not a fan of the cutscenes that seem designed for voice acting but aren't, I do actually think the shot of Briar shouting "THIS is the hidden treasure of Area Zero!" works pretty well. Her exaggerated movements sell the exact tone and cadence of the dialogue to the point where when I watch that scene I can hear her speaking in my head even though there's no actual voice acting.

Maybe Pokemon just needs to make their animations even hammier. And also not make any more silent concerts.

i was watching this jimothy video where a fan made a meme gen 3 ou team for him. video was fine, amusing enough, then Jimothy uses Gyarados and sees it has "Waterfall" instead of "Surf." The person making the meme team didn't understand the pre Physical/Special split. and that made me see red.

as an ex teacher, im used to seeing a ton of dumb nonsense and patiently correcting it. but when you see someone have an interest that they can't even bother understanding before engaging with, it sets me off!! it's not even fair, but any sort of "younger pokemon fan doesn't understand how the mechanics worked before their time" really pisses me off even tho i'm a new fan myself, and it's often reasonable that they should be. it's like thinking charli xcx's career started with BRAT

I get where you're coming from but people playing the games now do not seem to remember things likeyour own weaknesses so I think that no matter how much of a fan you are most people just do not pay full attention.

Only one person can help these people.

People have different levels of wanting to learn more about the history of their interests. I expect most people here are on the "obsessive" side of that, but not everyone needs--or wants--to have encyclopedic knowledge of their favorite pastime. Sometimes I curse my thirst for knowledge and my memory because it can genuinely make it hard for me to enjoy playing a game if I know I'm making a suboptimal decision (unless that suboptimal decision is part of the gameplay, such as in a challenge run).

As far as that video goes, maybe giving Gyarados Waterfall instead of Surf one generation before it was good was the intended meme.

Honestly I probably also would've suggested waterfall for the memeset despite remembering the phys/special split because you know what I, an obesssive who is like top 5 poster on the forum somehow dont know how to feel about that, frequently forget about?
It didn't get the flinch chance until gen 4.

I was actually wondering when it got the flinch chance because I didn't think it was Gen 2. That's even funnier. Game Freak really just made another Water HM that's objectively worse than the established one (and I assume everything that could learn Surf could learn Waterfall, at least in Gens 2-3).

Waterfall is a gen 1 move, it was originally the signature move of the Goldeen line before gen 2 made it an HM.

Seems like GF loved doing that.
Is there any Pokemon in Gen II that can learn Cut that does not get an objectvely better option like e.g. Stomp, Slash, Strength, Return, Body Slam, Headbutt?

You're reading too much in a game where HMs were never intended to be good moves and were mainly meant to be utility moves you'd be forced to give up a moveslot for.

Probably, but at least in this case both moves are perfectly reasonable to run. Just... maybe not together.

Surf and Waterfall are, interestingly enough, both solid moves in battle. Even before Gen 4 Waterfall was in a vacuum acceptable, just overly redundant with Surf. The physical/special split made them more distinct as Waterfall turned into a physical move and became the best physical Water STAB so many physical Water-types had for a while (before Liquidation became widespread), so there's that.

If I had to throw in a few guesses, I suspect two things are the case. One, a possible intention is that a player is gonna catch and use a lot of Pokemon and probably use multiple Water-types, maybe in doing so split the beans between Waterfall and Surf. The fact that Feraligatr in Gen 2 didn't learn Waterfall raises the possibility to me that they do want players to use a second Grass/Fire/Water Pokemon besides their starter anyway even though that rarely ends up being the case.

The other is that the average little Timmy (aka, kids, the target audience of this franchise) isn't going to pay attention to the fact that Waterfall and Surf have little difference between them in combat, even in Gen 2 and 3 in those early days. They probably will just be fine with having two Water moves on their Water-type if they're doing that and just alternate them based on which animation they feel like seeing. Waterfall in Gen 3 at least has a pretty cool looking animation and it still hits pretty hard, so a kid playing this will be fine with that if only because in their eyes it gives Water moves a bit more variety instead of "click Surf every single time".

Just a few speculations there.

That reminds me of my old Feraligatr moveset: Slash, Surf, Hydro Pump, Water Gun.
Looks pretty solid, does it not? Surf is a reliable move, Hydro Pump for when you need extra power, Slash for coverage, and Water Gun was great in the beginning of the game so it has to be good.
Water Gun is for finishing weakened opps :totodiLUL:

I guess all of us did that as kids, didn't we?

Seems like GF loved doing that.

Nope. Everything that learned Cut probably got Swift at the very least and Return is a universal TM.

Which is why Whirlpool is probably the worst HM EVER.

Giving Gatr or some other Water-type an extra Water HM definitely isn't a big deal, but two? That's crippling.

Then you look at the move itself. Field effect? Cut, but on Water. Gen 2 battle effect: 15BP, 70% Accuracy, trap, and 1/16 chip per turn.

This is positively abysmal in-game. Literally a deal breaker. The worst part is how late it is, so it overlaps heavily with Waterfall.

And of course, you only need it once. Matter of fact, here's what the Whirlpool HM unlocks.

So basically, Horsea, the Solarbeam TM, and a trainer. The Dragon Fang is bugged in GSC outside of Stadium 2, so it's literally useless. Lugia as well, but that's only relevant if you got Silver. Post-game is whatever.

This is ALL the useless Whirlpool HM gets you. And btw, the Whirl Islands also require Flash and Strength, because of course it does. Don't forget to bring Dig or an Escape Rope if you want Lugia too, or else you'll need Waterfall as well!

Somehow, they managed to use Waterfall as an obstacle even less in GSC, but it is what it is, I suppose. At least the move itself is decent enough.

Ho-oh and Lugia aren't actually version exclusive, you can catch Lugia in Gold and Ho-oh in Silver. Getting Ho-oh in Silver requires the beasts though.

He isn't saying Lugia is version exclusive, just that it is only relevant in Silver because Gold only accesses it in the post-game, where its basically irrelevant.
Also Ho-oh in Crystal requires the beasts. Ho-oh in silver just needs the wing item you get in, again, the post-game.

The fact that the people in the localization team of pokemon stadium 2 decided to name the rocket execs wobbufett this name
Fap isn't actually that old of a word, it hadn't actually come into common usage yet in the late 90s.

Isn't the other legendary unlocked in the post-game by getting their wing item from an old man in Pewter?

Well, this. Thanks!

Post-game is post-game :mehowth:

You know what annoys me? People who only join in a topic to "um ACKSHUALLY" other statements rather than having anything to contribute to the topic at hand.

In the anime itself this always felt like a major reason I didn't care for Misty or Max in earlier seasons. The snarking/know-it-all routine got old after a while and they did not have a reasonable balance of them actually adding to scene or solution to match. Even in Misty's case that was addressed not by doing more with her positively, but doing less with the negative aspects and just kind of reducing her presence.
