(Little) Things that annoy you in Pokémon

Is this the worst human character design in mainline Pokemon? He's at least bottom 5, surely? Even the female version has something more cohesive going on with the dress and no rancid bowl cut

0.35 of a meter is only a little over a foot of difference in height (and to be clear real world quadrupeds besides giraffes are measured to the shoulder not the top of the head, if you measured an actual hippo like how Pokémon are measured it would also be around 2 meters). Also Hippowdon, at 2 meters tall is like maybe 3 to 4 long? It's a very square creature. Actual hippos get to a little over 5. Hippowdon also has far more empty space inside given the much larger mouth and the sand pouch.

It's also presumably being measured with the sand pouch empty, given that's a thing you could do and the sand isn't actually part of its body.

Further, a big part of why hippos are so heavy is to allow them to be able to walk along the bottoms of bodies of water which Hippowdon, swimmer of sand and mud, doesn't need to do. The black rhinoceros for instance only weighs 800 to 14,000 kg. Hippowdon's still pretty light, but not as absurdly so when you consider it's not trying to sink like a rock in water.
Guys, the way Mons are specifically measured was in the Tera Leak prior to this book
Actually this is something that bugs me, Sugi's art has the jaw very long. Looks cool. DP sprite is close to it

But the sprites' second frame in Plat specifically shrinks this a lot, and the anime model sheet oddly lacks a side view

The game models are largely faithful to this, which again gets me. Why was his jaw immediately nerfed?

This fan user recreated Sugi's art of it in 3D and it doesn't look half bad, just needs a cam with tweaked FOV

The trainer design in general for DP is horrifically hit miss. Even the sprites have mid as fuck poses for some, which BDSP was accurate to sadly

These outfits for rangers are ass. Better colors than Team Galactic's, but ass

Screenshot_20250601_135201.png

Fairly generic for winter rangers. Feels very boring

Plat's Frontier brains don't really help. I hate Thornton's design
1748811303523.png

And Dahlia suffers from Tangrowth syndrome of having weirdly undetailed hair compared to past and later trainer designs

I can feel the fatigue here, no wonder Ohmura was promoted as trainer designer after HGSS. Even if Lyra and especially Nate are terrible

Those are Ace Trainers, not Rangers.
DP Rangers look like this:

Spr_DP_Pok%C3%A9mon_Ranger_F.png

Which are basically just the Gen 3 Rangers in a different pose with purple hair and short sleeves. (And the female Ranger wearing a skirt rather than shorts.)
Spr_RS_Pok%C3%A9mon_Ranger_M.png
Spr_RS_Pok%C3%A9mon_Ranger_F.png

Said short sleeves then even being added to the Hoenn Rangers in ORAS.

The clothes design isn't good, especially with the drab tawny colors. Snowboarders look way more cool effortlessly, and that's not getting into poses

Also the fact that I mistook them for rangers cuz of the earthy colors isn't good. Every Gen after 2 they wear slick jumpsuits (or suits in XY, which fits the posh French theme), yet DP it's just gross colored shit for regular, then drab scruff for winter

In ilex forest In jhoto that kimono girl acting lost lol, couldn't really be easier to get out of there. AAnd then if you say you can show her out she's all "oh you're lost too," like isn't that up to me? So odd dialogue. HM Slave need early gens is annoying, any monotype playthrough for ex. isn't possible at all. I doubt I'd take it that far, but I would want flexibility in the games I replay more(mostly hgss really only, there sucks for hms ofc.)

I think they actually went overboard putting items in the ground in SV. I didn't get through it fast would just go off getting those. I know I can ignore, and these days I do mostly, but early was too tempting for the undisciplined imo.

I am absolutely terrible about this and cannot suppress the urge to comb every hill for trinkets.

Paldea is such hostile design to me lmao.

In RSE Norman mentions that the journey between his house and his gym takes 30 minutes (and he's shown to be very physically fit) so I think we're supposed to conclude that the areas in the games are far bigger and more complex than the consoles of the day can allow, much as the anime depicts them to be - iirc Ilex Forest in the anime takes Ash and co. several episodes to traverse.

As for the dialogue, if you say "yes" she asks "aren't you lost as well?", implying disbelief or doubt, not "you are lost as well" as a definitive statement (emphasis mine in both cases). HGSS has a lot of poorly-translated dialogue but that's not one of them.

So Area Zero. The final fight is a single imposing Pokemon as opposed to the Professor's team of 6, you're at the Epicenter of a Tera Crystal concentration, and brought your 3 friends for Battle support in various tag scenarios.

How was there no section structured as a Tera Raid Battle with Nemona/Arven/Penny as AI companions against a Titan Glimmora or something (assuming the Raidon stays saved for the last sequence)?

Hey, at least they didn't have a Raid Battle as the final boss encounter and then just not bother to do this despite setting up the opportunity. That would be a whole new level of baffling and inscrutable

Is the complaint here being that the raid battle wasn't Hop/Bede/Marnie/Player against Eternatus because I think the situation on half of that is very different from the friend situation in SV and would be awkward to have the Wolf team up if they had to replace the two weak links of Bede & Marnie or specifically replace your Pokemon.

SWSH has problems but like structurally & narratively it makes perfect sense for that climax to have you & hop stand in for the former kings teaming up with the wolves to defeat the darkest day, and to not involve Marnie (who is barely relevant to anything and is just your sports rival) and Bede (who does at least have the Rose connection, but is otherwise going through his Own Thing) at all. In fact I've never even questioned it or thought they should have been there at all.

My compromise if the premise is involving all 4 would be to give you and Hop Zacian and Zamazenta as your Pokemon rather than CPU allies, maybe as a "Victory lap" after winning a regular battle raid with Eternatus. This also contingent on Marnie being a character and not just there for rival quota.

Having plot Legendaries under trainer control is something I wish the series dabbled in more, only really doing it with Gen 5's Dragons, then Gen 9 with the Raidons and Kieran briefly capturning Terapagos. I think selecting you two as the trainers is a suitable enough stand-in for the role of the two kings, much like the mentioned battle with N between Zekrom and Reshiram added to the party in Gen 5 Part 1.

Yeah this was exactly my idea. They could've done both! Why not!
