Pokémon GO

Yeah the infographic also says "shiny Gimmighoul" so I'm hoping it's both. Would be nice if it were the regular and I could transfer it to Home, it's one of the few shiny-locks left
The other reason I assume it's both is because it would be odd to make exclusively the costume shiny

If nothing else I assume TPC would be like "no no, you must release the base as shiny before you can give shiny costumes"

Possibly. There was a sort of semi-precedent of this with Blitzle, where the costume version came out about a week before the regular shiny (though I think that was just because it wasn't technically possible to encounter a non-costumed Blitzle because of the event that was happening) so something similar could happen here. But I'm inclined to agree, I think it would be against some sort of internal TPC guidance to do that

I assume Gimmighoul normal can be shiny since it's a distinct form from the Chest in MSG, so there is a "unique" collector nature to it without infringing on existing ones there. Plus Gamefreak probably makes more money from the cross pollination sales for the Coin Bag and/or transfer than they realistically lose (if any) from people not farming the next event where Gimmighoul's in raids or something.

Eternatus already, damn. God knows how many players that'll take to beat.

Also lmao I love how Zacian and Zamazenta are just walking on the spot at the start of this video

The irony to this is unless they bend some rules, Zacian and Zama are better as tanks than attackers into Eternatus (best DPS being Metagross or Excadrill pending any additional releases before it) since it's not weak to Steel and Behemoth Blade/Bash are otherwise just standard DMax power.

Well, maybe they'll adhere to SwSh and we won't be able to use anything other than Zacian and Zamazenta, since Eternatus blocks dynamax :P

As for Global Go fest, I enjoyed it this year. Got a pretty good shiny haul and was able to do enough Zamazenta raids to crown at least one, and I got the shiny finally for my HOME collection. I picked the Zacian research the next day to crown my hundo Zacian. Didn't get any shiny Zacian, but I have the GameStop shiny already. Hopefully we can get some more crown energy during the final event.

I think Niantic/Scopely (not sure who is running the show right now) were probably pretty successful at tempting people into buying the ridiculous $20 pass to get the gold bottle cap, especially after the regular GO pass made it unclear how easy it was going to be to finish the pass. Without the daily cap it was super easy. While the gold bottle cap was tempting to max out my Marshadow, the news that you can't transfer hyper-trained Pokemon fully dissuaded me from considering it. Hopefully they'll remove the restriction, but until they do hyper training isn't worth it. The only reason I am ok spending money on this game is because once end of service is on the horizon I can start rapturing my good mons up to HOME.

In other news, Hisuian Zorua will be the first ultra unlock this year. Looking forward to that.

For my Home Dex purposes what I'm curious about is if they'll be dumb and find a way to mess up how Eternatus works that prevents it from going to Home even when it can't turn into Eternamax.
The Simplest solution would be Eternatus turning into Eternamax during the "Dynamax Attack" phase and no other time under player control.

Which is also how you know it won't be what the Dev team goes with.

the simplest solution is just "doesn't turn into eternamax while under player control" and "eternatus is just treated as a normal Pokemon that has a move that lets it be used in dynamax" but I cannot ignore the possibility that doing the latter flags it as untransferrable

Confirmed: roaming Gimmighoul is no longer shiny-locked! Hurrah.

Looks like they may have been late in enabling it according to TSR, no reports of it until just now.

Either way, yay. Doubt I'll get to hunt this that extensively but welcome news regardless.

Doesn't say anything about how the form change will work, but given that it's partly gbl locked, seems like it will work like Morepeko.
So the tricky part is that unlike Morpeko, Aegislash's form change affects its stats and thus its CP (Shield form needs to be high 40's to hit 1500-ish, Sword is in the 20's), which might make for some funky code if it's an in-battle change.

Aegislash will be interesting, because its current move spread leaves it without a bait move and it gets hard walled by Darks or Bulky Steel resists like Blastoise and Forretress. Assuming it works anything like the MSG (becomes Sword when using a Charge move, Shield if using a Shield or on entry), it REALLY would want the ability to double up on moves like Close Combat/Wild Charge Users tend to do, which makes me think its current moveset is a conscious decision

Interesting tidbit about Eternatus according to the game miners today: it can't be traded. That could change before it's presumably released next month, but it suggests that we'll only get the one. I'd imagined it being in Max Battles but if that's the case then possibly it'll be through some sort of special research...? This has got me hella curious about how the finale event will work, I was all prepared to actually spend coins for once raiding Eternatus but I can't imagine there being raids for something you don't get to catch afterwars. The most low-effort version would probably just be the dogs back in raids with a requirement to complete [x] amount of raids/max battles to reach the Eternatus encounter.

My mundane answer is this is simply something they put on the mon because they can't figure out Spaghetti Code to send it to Home, much like Spinda, the Origin Formes of Palkia/Dialga, and Gigantamax Pokemon. It could be that Eternamax in MSG isn't keyed to any trait actually on the player-obtainable Eternatus, so maybe adding something to it here makes it funky.

As for the research prospect, fighting Max Battles in general (which Zacian and Zamazenta obviously help with) leading up to the encounter would make some thematic sense, given the Darkest Day event involved out-of-control Dynamax Mons popping up

If it was just "we can eternamax this, so it's treated like a g-max" that wouldn't need to trading, however.

Also it is still baffling to me that Origin Palkia/Dialga can't be transferred. I can believe there's an Issue with the transfer process preventing G-Maxes on Home's end or whatever, but Palkia/Dialga seem firmly on "this is your own damn fault" for Go.

I don't get how Go is incapable of changing them back to their base forms on transfer. It's not even like the Fusion mons where they have to finagle separation or something.

Exactly, this hasn't been a problem with any other transformation, so how on earth did they set these up internally to cause this issue.

Hmm that's possible, I hadn't thought of that. Someone on Reddit speculated it's to stop it being transferred in Eternamax form and they've just applied the ban to the species as a whole (doesn't mean we'll get to use the Eternamax form in Go, but they have been known to release things unintentionally - hello Black/White Kyurem)

Would be incredibly cool if the event had basically every Gigantamax Pokemon in Max Battles at once, but they've not really released enough of them yet to make that as interesting as it could be (not that I'd complain though, I've missed so many of them). It still feels incredibly early to be releasing Eternatus, but if it's a one-and-done this time around I suppose it'll be brought back in an eventual Galar tour a couple of years from now (same goes for Kubfu/Urshifu). Basically a similar model to what they're probably going to do with Zygarde.

edit: Actually this works better than I thought, because I was thinking Calyrex+steeds would be a good bet for next year's Go Fest until I remembered it's the ten-year anniversary so Mega Mewtwo seems far more likely. It'd be really weird to debut Calyrex and not involve Eternatus somehow (not that following the lore accurately has ever been something they've prioritised)

An idea I had was to make the Raids ALSO include DMax eligible Pokemon (5*'s can be Zacian and Zamazenta if Eternatus is a one-off and thus won't be in them), show the Max stuff is running rampant and not even restricted to the usual spots for a bit. So like 1* raids could have Beldum, Drilbur, etc. Max eligible, 3-4*'s could be GMax Pokemon (Kanto Starters, Gengar, etc for the 4*'s), and the catchable Pokemon are Max Battle eligible.

Probably too wish listy but it's a fun idea

Calyrex's connection to Eternatus is in the margins, shrouded in implications anyway, so "following the lore" wouldn't really be a thing. Eternatus would always be tied significantly more to the wolves, so even if Eternatus was saved for a Go Fest it would probably be similar to whatever is about to happen.

With all the info on Eternatus out there, easy to see why it's so locked off. It's a one-off available to everyone for finishing the new event's go pass and the incentive to do the Eternamax raid is till give a ton of candy

Which it needs because it takes a metric boatload of the stuff compared to a normal Pokemon

If I had to guess Eternatus probably won't be to be traded/transferred until they run Eternamax again at minimum. Could be waiting until Galar tour at the worst end.

The Astronomical candy cost is clearly to force people to play the event instead of using any Stockpiled Rare Candy. I'd like to note that for this to match standard raid rates, it would have to be literally 200 Candy/100 XL per Max Battle, and that's assuming you fit the ~30-40 battles inside of a weekend instead of farmed over a week or two.

This just continues a trend I've been feeling in one corner of my mind that Dynamax is trying to essentially course correct things the Bean Counters don't like about the current distribution systems:
  • Rare Candy leading people not to raid a new mon for resources led to fusion energies and now sums so astronomical they can't work outside "designated" mons like Mythicals
  • Max Particles requiring you to visit multiple stops and actively walk around (more activity and "look what those people are playing" publicity) vs Raids being able to simply pick up the pass on the spot
  • Max Battles having "tiers" with different costs while you have to use them up every day so people will bother with the weaker ones (vs Raids where the Cost-Benefit of a flat Pass usage always favors the strongest ones)
  • Dmax in the first place being a "you need Pokemon caught from Max Battles or Research to participate" to devalue existing power ups and double dip on power progression for several types (Dynamax being universal in MSG highlights this was a Mobile decision)
  • Max Spot candy rewards vs Gyms, both in what they give (Free Candy vs Free Coins) being separate from Premium and completely changing the community dynamic (Gym control encourages low activity spots so they can wait out the 50 Coin threshold, Max Spots want more battlers to get the 3+ needed for max candy reward)
  • The Battle system in general, while maybe not deliberate in doing this, is much more trying to push High Level players to NEED groups compared to duo-soloable Raids, with things like Max Meter charging being massive hindrances without bodies in the party and the restricted options preventing a faceroll with their pre-existing Tier 1 attackers like using Groudon instead of Excadrill.
  • Additionally, the 4 member limit and emphasis on tanking means casual players can't just be carried on a raid to a capture as simply as something like me and the Community Ambassador helping 6-7 Kid players with Level 20 random NFE captures to win against a Lunala raid.
  • Simultaneously, Max Battles are somehow harder to coordinate than Raids without private lobbies or things like Party Grouping, meaning EVERYONE has to be ready to do everything depending on who they get paired up with (can't designate 1-2 tanks, everyone has to be ready to be the tank in case the other people they get assigned don't have one). This will mostly come up at GMax events or high traffic stuff like the Legendary.
The whole system feels designed to correct monetization shortcomings they've found with the raid system over the years without the PR backlash of changing raids themselves too much. Then poke people to try it with things like easy Starters or Zacian and Zamazenta, before shoving into the Deep-end with GMax and Eternatus
  • Makes casuals have to play or ask around more to be capable of contributing and again pushes the community together into more events since there's only so much power creep that can make high level fights possible on Low man.
