Pokémon Presents - Pokémon Day 2025 - Pokemon ZA Info & Pokemon Champions Announced

Plot twist it's Malamar but upside down
honestly malamar upside down does look pretty sick lol

It comes to Champions with Simple instead of Contrary and the mindgames are the most annoying they've been since OG Aegislash.
I think I would rather it had contrary or simple than the ever present fear a lot of people have that mega malamar would be the pokemon to finally make the infamous fan idea for an ability real (trick room setter)

Do we have an updated list of confirmed Pokemon for this game yet, as well as megas? Wondering if this game will have a mixed Pokedex with some returning from newer gens, or if it will just be Pokemon that were present in Gen 1-6.

If there is a datamine/leaked thread, point me to it as well.

And this doesn't sound like walking on snow, you can hear clacks of shoes on hard floor. The "crackling" is a combination of lack of noise cancellation and the winds. Sounds like they were walking around and then broke into a run. Probably continuing the tease for Malamar.
okay apparently it was supposed to be depicting them being hit by topsy turvy because now their icon and every post since then is upside down

I wonder if Mega Malamar will have a signature move (upgraded version of Topsy-Turvy) or Ability that will reverse all of the target's stat changes and/or swaps the target's Base offenses with their Base defenses, making walls squishier or glass cannons hit like wet noodles.. There has to be something big coming with the way they're marketing this Mega.

I don't feel like Mega Malamar is going to be anything overly special, I think they're just utilising more creative ways of marketing for arguably the most exciting phenomena that a lot of people have been waiting to see return. Plus for the Legends series there's not too much that they can showcase compared to the Generational games where there's a brand new region with like 70+ new Pokémon, characters and so on.

It contributes to the slice of life aspect that Pokémon want to showcase in their media. Or the fact that.. yknow.. big tentacle squid creatures want admiration/friends, but too scary, so they hypnotise people into doing it. I think it's a lot of fanfare for something that's probably not going to massively live up to the hype but I respect and admire their marketing tactics.

Yeah, like, they're clearly having fun but objectively all they've done is they put together a video and had some silly social media posts to go with it. The western branch also sent a little merch package, which isn't even unique to this reveal.

They probably could have done the same thing with Hawlucha (which had a 4 minute original CG short made for it!) but probably didn't because they figured My Friend Malamar was funnier.

Serebii keeps track of the officially revealed mons. So far no post-6 mons have been officially revealed to be in the game.

There's no leak thread yet, but if you are so inclined, elsewhere you can find the list of megas which supposedly comes from the tera leak build of the game.

Between Malamar's questionable typing (basically non-existent defensively), low stats, and Game Freak's recent propensity for handing out signature moves/abilities, I would not be surprised if Mega Malamar was min-maxed to hell for Trick Room and got an ability that sets it.
A Trick Room auto setter would spell the end times, mega stone or no. there are many very powerful pokemon whose main drawback is speed alone, letting rhyperior or ursalunas or torkoals run wild with no set up or counterplay would doom VGC

I think I see what the Pokemon Company was trying to do, and if I'm right I can't help bul feel the whole thing a bit manipulative (yes, I know how ironic that sounds being we're talking about Malamar). I think what they were hoping for with "My Friend Malamar" was it to become viral marketing and that the Pokemon Community itself would latch onto it and start memeing it; for those who remember think back to "Creepy Marshtomp". And while it was funny for a day and some people and fansites did a thing, honestly it started to feel like its dragging on now. We all know this is leading to Mega Malamar, why are you prolonging it? Like the time between Mega Hawlucha's & Mega Victreebel's teaser and debut was 2 days each, but the difference with them was is their teaser was "advertising" the announcement.

I think the boring answer is it just keeps Contrary as its ability. It fits its entire shtick and is the only pokemon that learns the thing "regularly" to begin with

I kind of feel this is the answer if it doesn't get an Ability which could relate to its hypnotic power. Not sure why people are suddenly jumping onto a Trick Room gimmick. Going by what we've soon so far with "My Friend Malamar", I'd suggest a Cute Charm expy (one that disregards gender) and/or an Ability version of Follow Me: Mesmerize (upon Mega Evolving or being sent out, all opposing Pokemon become infatuated with this Pokemon and it becomes the center of attention for that turn).

tbf I wasn't even committing to a prediction so much as going "if this happens yeah that seems valid."

I know enough about VGC to say they very blatantly don't care since Urshifu and Calyrex-S exist.

Honestly if it should be any of the Rooms I'd think it would be Wonder which it...doesn't learn, for some reason...

I also agree with it probably keeping Contrary. I'm sure once LZ-A is datamined, Contrary will be Mega Malamar's ability within the data despite abilities not being displayed ingame. Technically that could still just be a placeholder in the same way that Hisuian Samurott originally had Shell Armor as its hidden ability within the code of LA, and Mega Malamar's ability could still be something other than Contrary in Champions despite having it in the data for LZ-A.

However, if within LZ-A's code Mega Malamar has an ability other than its own Contrary, Suction Cups, or Infiltrator, that would make it highly unlikely that it will have Contrary in Champions. I think it having something other than those three would strongly suggest it's the final ability they chose for Champions.

Malamar happens to be my favorite Gen 6 Pokémon, and while I'm really looking forward to seeing the likely Mega reveal tomorrow, I'm far more interested in learning its base stats and (potentially placeholder) ability next month. As a matter of fact, finding out these parameters for each new Mega is one of the things I'm looking forward to the most about LZ-A.

I mean yes it is marketing and was an attempt to see if something would foster, probably since it fit the theme. It is by definition manipulative.
And it kind of worked! People liked the doing silly memes and such over the weekend and the team for the official english website clearly had some fun writing up goofy articles (the Japanese site lacked most of that, usually opting for social media goofs).

Could they have probably revealed it yesterday? Yeah, but, like, it isn't that prolonged.

Is this where I say "welcome to marketing"?

I know it sound sarcastic but you shouldn't exactly be surprised by manipulative promotional campaign from big franchises in this time and age.
