Pokémon Champions - releasing April 8, 2026

The new Megas would be very underwhelming even in Gen 7. Like Tough Claws would have been a modest ability for Emboar and Skarmory, then they end up with do nothing abilities. And then compare them to Mega Lopunny, Mega Charizard, and Mega Venusaur that all got really great abilities and good stats too.
Stalwart and Propeller Tail are copium abilities they really want to make work. Like redirection immunity is cool but you give up your item slot or pass-up on much better abilities in the case of Skewda and Arch. They buffed Storm Drain/Lightning Rod to do something in Singles, but Stalwart somehow not just being Mold Breaker is ???

I think the examples of ITS SO OVER were Drampa/Crab/Chandy (Levitate is actually good on Mega Chime in a Singles context so I'll ignore it here) primarily. The only Megas prior to them and Dragonite that kept old abilities were Scizor, Ttar, Aboma, and Blaziken. In the case of all the latter though, the abilities they kept are insanely powerful on their own, Scizor doesn't care if technically Bullet Punch with a Band or Life Orb is stronger than Mega Scizor, the stat upgrade is just that worth it. Of all things, Crab is the only one that could say the same to any extent, you actually can take a hit now and you're slower which is better for Trick Room.

Drampa largely is just More Of The Same, but it's a mon that peaked in viability in Gen 8. It being slightly more able to take a hit is nice, but Goltres made Berserk work the way base Drampa couldn't for a reason, and Mega Drampa doesn't change much.

Chandy well, I have no idea other than it wanted to be a special snowflake from the other Fire Megas.

I wonder if not for balancing reasons, why these in particular didn't change at all. Some of them are at least very flavorful and useful, so why Infiltrator Mega Chandy?

Mega lopunny is nerfed with return gone. And do not act like tough claws skarmory would be modest that thing would be metagame defining. Stalwart is probably a great ability for vgc (not that I play it)

Stalwart on skarmory is possibly a bigger meme than innards out victreebel...

Nothing skarmory does has to worry about storm drain or lighting rod, and skarmory would kill amoongus / volcarona / clefairy regardless of follow me / rage powder if it had any VGC viability.

I feel like these abilities are very much related to them being conservative about what they give each mon lol. Vibes are telling me they will be changed in future balance patches.

So far from what I've played the game feels pretty good. I mostly just transferred my mons from other games, but building them wasn't too bad. It also helps that the ladder is not too competitive either in the lower ranks so you can get VP pretty fast. That said, buying mega stones + other items eats into that pretty fast. I also just got the day one box space thingy which is pretty nice for all the mons one would want to transfer in.

Initial impressions tell me that corv is pretty good in the BSS format esp vs the rental teams lol.

From what I've been seeing most of the shit you'd be running anyways like Corv, Garchomp, Dragapult, etc. seem PRETTY good in this format. Mega Clefable has been pretty great in the lower ranks.

Mega Lopunny had it in Gen 7 at least, which is where I was saying these megas would still be horseshit in.
Plus Mega Lopunny did get Sword Dance and Mach Punch in ZA, which are great tools for it. It can definitely work off alternate Normal moves with those buffs.
And it'd be better than these Megas too.

I think Tough Claws/Sheer Force would still be conservative on these Megas and would make them 100x better.

is it possible to get Floette without legends za or trading from za?
if you mean mega floette / floette eternal, no

maybe you can like randomly find these pokemon, this news blurb is kind of vague?

Mega Emboar heard all the laughing and decided to drag other ZA megas down with him. I really hope changing abilities are in the cards for this game. At least megas from XY/ORAS had thought with their Abilities, and no, listening to the casuals who play pokemon once and put it down should not be the feedback they listen to with "omg megas so broken" so they made new ones mostly trash.

it would be nice but I doubt it's happening. I think most of these move mechanics changes and ability choices were made in mind with whatever new stuff coming in Gen 10. Maybe there will be some sort of reason to care about redirection outside of follow me, maybe ignoring target abilities will matter, maybe infiltrator gets buffed indirectly by there being more things to pass thru?

granted even if all this happens its still a bummer to have a subpar ability for like a year. kind of a rerun of some gen 5 pokemon not getting their hiddens until gen 6.

GameFreak must be Invincible fans, since that’s the only reason I can think of to why Mega Victreebel has Innards Out of all abilities.
only upside I can think of from this is that like, at least game freak isn't afraid to give multiple generation exclusive abilities away, lol

anger shell golisopod stocks going up I guess

Innards Out doesn't seem terrible but it's also just such a weird ability. I'm not sure how it even works honestly because I've never seen Pyukumuku used outside of a random ingame encounter.

Pyukumuku used to run around very early into SM's life, being a bulky water type that could pivot with empty Baton Pass....up until smogon banned BP outright and it plummeted to lower tiers. The goal with bell is probably simillar, excet it actually has offenses and can abuse Strength Sap. Might make for a challenge to overcome in 3 vs 3 singles.

It's kind of crazy how unfathomably bad Innards Out is for a Mega.

You are giving up a functional ability and your Mega slot for a gimmick that only activates when you Mega is KO'd, and it will trade at best. There is no guarantee of a revenge OHKO because the damage dealt is based on what HP value you were at right before fainting.

It's like Game Freak's designers were actively trying to see if they could outdo Mega Audino and make the worst Mega possible.
