It's Cherry Poppin' Time: A War Story

I have never written a war story before, and I thought the results of this match were tight enough to warrant one. I thought it was a pretty good match, personally, despite some mistakes and some luck. My attempt at a readable war story is far from the most creative, but it tries to be enjoyable. It is divided into sections that aren’t overly long, but aren’t overly short, either. Each section obviously has a different theme. I copied the sections idea from Bologo’s recent war story, just because it provides flavor to a battle. The separation of sections is in no way my own original idea, and is in no way an attempt to try and copy the success of another person’s war story. It just fits better this way.

Some guidelines:

-All of the chat log chunks are bold.
-All in-match comments were removed.
-Commentary from myself are default font.
-Leftovers recovery has been removed; all pokemon holding Leftovers will be specified on the team display by an asterisk by its sprite.
-Abilities that appear in text, such as Intimidate and Pressure, have been removed.
-A lot of the log has been condensed.
-The score follows this format: Me – Opponent
-This war story is more commentary than log; if you do not read, you will be lost.

Now then, onto the teams. In no particular order:

Let the games begin!

FIRST ENCOUNTER

Choice Specs Salamence is truly a wonderful thing. It may not be a supportive lead, but Intimidate hurts any Gyarados and Breloom leads, and a quick Draco Meteor always sets the tone early.

Legava sent in Crobat.

That did not fit my description. Immediately upon seeing Crobat, I suspected a fast Hypnosis, so I switched in my Crocune to absorb the sleep.

Crobat used Hypnosis.
Suicune fell asleep!

This would play a somewhat significant role later on. Since Crobat isn’t exactly Deoxys-F, I figured I should stay in and try to gain a Calm Mind boost. Most Crobat nowadays are of the classic sleep ‘n run variety, so I expected a U-turn.

Crobat used U-turn.
Suicune lost 6% of its health.
Legava switched in Deoxys-e.
Suicune is fast asleep!
Suicune used Sleep Talk.
Suicune used Rest.

Damn you, Rest.

The only move Deoxys-E would use against Suicune, from my experiences, would be Thunderbolt. Not wanting to risk a big dent on an unpredictable length of sleep, I attempted to out-predict the incoming Thunderbolt.

Shiven switched in Blissey.
Deoxys-e used Thunderbolt.
A critical hit!
Blissey lost 18% of its health.

She is such a whore, but she did her job wonderfully. I noticed the lack of recoil damage, and, at the time, suspected a Choice item, so I once again shuffle to somebody who can take a hit or three. He didn’t plan on sticking around, either...

Luck of the Draw

My Celebi switch-in was met by his Machamp switch-in. From a lot of experience in this situation, Celebi has always won in the end, so I figured this time would be no different.

Celebi used Leech Seed.
Machamp was seeded!
Machamp used Ice Punch.
It's super effective!
Celebi lost 50% of its health.
Machamp's health was sapped by leech seed!

Due to a combination of Leftovers and Leech Seed, I figured it was safe to attack once before using Recover.

Celebi used Grass Knot.
A critical hit!
Machamp lost 80% of its health.

I immediately thought to myself the game was practically mine, until...

Machamp used Ice Punch.
It's super effective!
A critical hit!
Shiven's Celebi fainted.

Ouch.

5-6

Takin’ Chances

With Machamp’s low health, I figured my ScarfTran could easily deal with him. A quick switch to Dugtrio led to a large chunk of damage.

Heatran used Earth Power.
Dugtrio lost 70% of its health.

I wasn’t sure if ScarfTran was faster than Dugtrio, so I took a gamble and decided to stick with Earth Power.

Heatran used Earth Power.
Legava's Dugtrio fainted.

Hey, it worked!

5-5

Class Reunion

Replacing Dugtrio was Crobat. I completely forgot Suicune had already been hypnotized, so I switched the blue liger in. A quick U-turn on Crobat’s part led to the reuniting of Suicune and Deoxys. I was quick pressed to switch Blissey in again, but I feared a Superpower. The way I saw it, if I switched in Salamence instead, the best case scenario was taking a predicted Superpower with stride. Worst case scenario was a Thunderbolt aimed at Suicune.

Deoxys-e used Superpower.
It's not very effective...
Salamence lost 12% of its health.
Deoxys-e's attack was lowered.
Deoxys-e's defence was lowered.

Even though Superpower should have been a dead giveaway, I still thought Deoxys had some sort of Choice item. That was one of, if not the, biggest mistakes I made this match, as it cost me my SpecsMence.

Deoxys-e used Ice Beam.
It's super effective!
Shiven's Salamence fainted.

4-5

Revelations

Realizing Deoxys was carrying an Expert Belt now, I decide to send something in that didn’t get completely raped by the three moves (and assumed Psychic) I’ve seen used. The pokemon that fit the bill was Jirachi. I slapped a Choice Band on my Jirachi and made it purely physical, and it does wonders. I decided to play it safe by using U-turn, scouting a switch. He smartly tucked away his Deoxys and sent in Donphan, sponging my U-turn. I switched in my ScarfTran, assuming Hidden Power [Ice] was capable of crippling the non-special defensive Donphan.

Heatran used Hidden Power.
It's super effective!
Donphan lost 73% of its health.
Donphan used Earthquake.
It's super effective!
Shiven's Heatran fainted.

That didn’t work.

3-5

Shuffle the Deck

I sent Jirachi back out to scout again. Since Donphan is ass slow, U-turn would either hit him before he could hit me, or I would hit a switch-in. Legava did the smart thing and kept Donphan in, since Jirachi can barely dent the thing. Suicune took the Earthquake decently, losing less than a quarter of its health without Leftovers factored in. Deoxys made a return, triumphantly towering over Suicune and the next turn of events.

Suicune is fast asleep!
Suicune used Sleep Talk.
Suicune used Rest.

Damn you, Rest.

Whoa... déjà vu.

Speaking of déjà vu, let’s try this again.

Shiven switched in Jirachi (lvl 100 Jirachi).
Deoxys-e used Thunderbolt.
Jirachi lost 24% of its health.

I felt proud, knowing that’s the best Deoxys could do against my Jirachi, and that I was correct in believing Jirachi could deal with Deoxys earlier in the battle. I continued with the switching around by using U-turn, just in time to see what his last pokemon was.

Legava switched in Kingdra.
Jirachi used U-turn.
Kingdra lost 38% of its health.

That wasn’t too terrible.

I’ve never seen a Kingdra without Rain Dance, so I assumed he would use it first turn, possibly suspecting a switch. I took advantage of that, firing off a blast of poison.

Kingdra used Rain Dance.
Rain began to fall!
Blissey used Toxic.
Kingdra was badly poisoned!
The rain continues to fall.
Kingdra is hurt by poison!

Shuffling immediately came to mind, assuming Kingdra was brave enough to stay in. Suicune was my best bet against the incoming Waterfall, so its elegant appearance came first. Kingdra met its end a few turns later in this hellish shuffle. There’s also a wonderful surprise during the shuffling.

Shiven switched in Suicune.
Kingdra used Waterfall.
It's not very effective...
Suicune lost 17% of its health.
The rain continues to fall.
Kingdra is hurt by poison!

Kingdra used Draco Meteor.
Kingdra's attack missed!
Suicune is fast asleep!
Suicune used Sleep Talk.
Suicune used Rest.
But it failed!

For the love of...

The rain continues to fall.
Kingdra is hurt by poison!

Shiven switched in Blissey.
Kingdra used Draco Meteor.
Blissey lost 17% of its health.
Kingdra's special attack was harshly lowered.
The rain continues to fall.
Kingdra is hurt by poison!

Shiven switched in Suicune.
Suicune is exerting its pressure!
Kingdra used Waterfall.
It's not very effective...
Suicune lost 19% of its health.
The rain stopped.
Kingdra is hurt by poison!
Legava's Kingdra fainted.

Glad that sick game is over.

3-4

Psychotic Rampages

Deoxys, once again, made an appearance. And once again, I relied on Jirachi to take a hit. Deoxys was probably aiming for Blissey, but he still got a decent chunk of Jirachi.

Deoxys-e used Superpower.
Jirachi lost 30% of its health.
Deoxys-e's attack was lowered.
Deoxys-e's defence was lowered.

Noticing a trend, other than Deoxys, the rest of Legava’s pokemon don’t like Ice-type attacks, or they just didn’t have enough health to bother trying. I decided to take advantage of that; a Choice Banded Ice Punch from a physical Jirachi is nothing to scoff at. The beauty behind the elemental punches on Jirachi is the increased likelihood of a secondary effect. Whether a switch occurred or not, I was reliant on a freeze at the time.

Legava switched in Crobat.
Jirachi used Ice Punch.
It's super effective!
Crobat lost 78% of its health.

Crap.

Crobat used U-turn.
Jirachi lost 14% of its health.
Legava switched in Donphan.
Jirachi used Ice Punch.
It's super effective!
Legava's Donphan fainted.

3-3

At least Jirachi has enough health to take a Deoxys attack, which is exactly who was switched in after Donphan’s sacrificial end. I did not want to be stuck on Ice Punch, so I made the switch to Suicune, suspecting a Superpower.

Deoxys-e used Thunderbolt.
It's super effective!
Suicune lost 51% of its health.

Wait, you’re not Superpower...

Deoxys-e used Thunderbolt.
It's super effective!
Suicune lost 26% of its health.
Shiven's Suicune fainted.

2-3

Well, there went one of my best shots against Crobat AND Machamp. Jirachi had enough health to survive Deoxys, so I decided to stick with a U-turn. If Deoxys stayed, he would have died. If Machamp came in, he would have died, too.

Deoxys-e used Thunderbolt.
Jirachi lost 25% of its health.
Jirachi used U-turn.
It's super effective!
Legava's Deoxys-e fainted.

2-2

Suicune would have been great right after that. However, Blissey was my only other pokemon. Blissey became bait for Machamp, and that was not a pretty sight...

THE FINAL COUNTDOWN

Two things could have been done. Blissey could have taken a hit to the face, die, and Jirachi can try to save the day, or Jirachi could have taken said hit, die, and then Blissey would take the next hit. The choice was clear.

Machamp used Close Combat.
It's super effective!
Shiven's Blissey fainted.
Machamp's defence was lowered.
Machamp's special defence was lowered.

1-2

Switching in Jirachi made me realize something: I only have 7% health left. At this stage, without a doubt, it was game over. The best I could do at this point was take out Machamp.

Jirachi used Zen Headbutt.
It's super effective!
Legava's Machamp fainted.

1-1

Well, there goes the game. At least it was close; Crobat had 22% left.

Crobat used Air Slash.

This last bit confused me. Air Slash has a slight chance of missing, and that could have easily led to my victory. However...

Jirachi lost 7% of its health.
Shiven's Jirachi fainted.
Legava wins!

Conclusion

While this wasn’t exactly the most flawless battle around, the mistakes were somewhat minimal, and the luck-based factors occurred once for each participant. The critical hit on Celebi may very well have forced the game, but another variable could have occurred as well, so that really doesn’t account for anything.

Let’s continue on to the meanings of the sections, shall we?

FIRST ENCOUNTER – Obviously, this was the first encounter of the match. We were both unaware of each other’s lead, and we have never faced each other before, so this title seems fitting in more than one way.

Luck of the Draw – The biggest relevant action in this section is Celebi’s critical hit, followed by Machamp’s critical hit. Critical hits are luck based, thus the luck of the draw.

Takin’ Chances – At this point, I was not sure what would work and what would not, so I took notable risks.

Class Reunion – The first four pokemon to appear make a reappearance here.

Revelations – More of each player’s team began to reveal itself. Also, ScarfTran not killing Donphan with Hidden Power [Ice] was a big revelation.

Shuffle the Deck – Once Kingdra was poisoned, I practically shuffled the visible members of my team back into my “deck” until things finally went my way, leading to Kingdra’s end.

Psychotic Rampages- All throughout this section, the Psychic-type pokemon on each team took over the battle, shifting momentum both ways.

THE FINAL COUNTDOWN - The last three turns.

Finally, let’s look at the biggest pros and cons of the match.

Slops
-Salamence’s death, due to my poor assumptions.
-The Celebi/Machamp encounter, for a super luck-based turn.
-Suicune, for being the most useless thing in this battle.
-Me rushing the Heatran and Donphan matchup. YES, I ALREADY KNOW FIRE BLAST WOULD HAVE DONE MORE THAN A X2 HIDDEN POWER, DROP IT ALREADY

Props
-Blissey, for stopping an early Deoxys rampage, and for screwing over Kingdra.
-Jirachi, for finding ways to shut down Deoxys’ killing spree.
-Deoxys, for being damn difficult to take down.
-Legava, for a wonderful match.
-You, the reader, for taking the time to read this.

slops: using HP ice on donphan with heatran when your fire move would have done more

umm i liked it in that it was very easy to read and well formatted. lacking was perhaps any 'innovation' or that higher skill level that makes a war story great. cb jirachi was pretty cool i guess.

that being said, you evidently put some time into it, so good job

Nice warstory, I didn't get bored while reading it.

Oh, and... in b4 'No one expects the Spanish CB Jirachi inquisition'.

I enjoyed that...too bad Suicune was useless. I stopped using the rest/sleep talk combo because of what my milotic does when I really need her.

nevertheless pretty entertaining.

Your title kinda describes my highschool prom. (1 more year left Dx)

Great warstory, and I liked the themes. Good playing, except for donphan.

I wasn’t sure if ScarfTran was faster than Dugtrio, so I took a gamble and decided to stick with Earth Power.

Stick with Earth Power? You had a Scarf and thus couldn't choose a different move, so that was not a gamble, but rather your only option.

In reading over it, I definitely do need to do some work on prediction. Still, that's what further matches are for.

Later on in the same night, we were matched up again on the ladder and he completely trounced me, so I suppose we're even.

Stick with Earth Power? You had a Scarf and thus couldn't choose a different move, so that was not a gamble, but rather your only option.
By that, I was not referring to switching moves. What I meant was, if Dugtrio was faster, which I have never bothered figuring out, then he could have easily used Earthquake on me and my Heatran would have been killed. That's what I meant when I said I stuck with Earth Power, making reference to using an attack rather than switching out.

Please note that any STAB move with base 95 power or more will do more than a 2x super effective hidden power, thus HP should generally only be used when 4x super effective.

right, but as umsarc said, maybe he preferred not to risk missing when he thought hp ice would kill.

out of curiosity, why the title "it's cherry poppin time"

Not bad. It's not 100% log, it's not "omg (repeating what happened!) I'm going to (what happens next) now!", and it's entertaining. Good job!

I find it impossible to find Standard team(op's) warstories entertaining. It's just the same old stuff everyone sees every day.

...Which is, once again, why I said I stuck with Earth Power.

LOL you didn't mean it that way, as you said in your story you 'took a gamble and stuck with Earth Power'. How exactly does one gamble when you cannot switch out AND cannot switch moves? I just find it funny. The warstory, other than that lol comment was good.

Yeah. Just that thing bothered me a bit, but the rest of the story was good. (Taking a gamble implied you had a choice in the matter, but because of Choice and Arena Trap, you really didn't.)
